I didn’t own slaves, my family never owned slaves. My ancestors were never part of colonialism or the crusades. Even if they were, I wouldn’t feel guilty about it.

Guilt over that which is done with and not by our own hands is about as useful as sticking your hand in a paper shredder– nothing really comes of it, but some people like to try it anyway. We’re white– I’m white. And I know my ancestors helped pervert the notion of slavery, but you can’t change the past. Moreover, even if I could, I wouldn’t. Slavery made us what we are today, and we’ve all gotta get over such racist notions of guilt for it. And how many white people really feel guilt about the Crusades these days?

Look, I don’t agree with what “Sleeveless” said (though I think he was probably parodying anyway) but I’m tired of comments like this! I’m from the South and I am not inbred, uneducated or racist. There’s a whole mythology that has been built up in the North that they were completely blameless in the slave trade (which WAS a complete travesty). The North was one of the greatest producers of slave ships and, last time I checked, there is still racial tension and racial inequality in the North. The reason slavery was bigger in the South was because states like North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia have climates that supported big cash crops that were fueled by slave labor (ex. rice, tobacco, cotton, etc.). I’m not saying that that was a good thing AT ALL. Slavery is a blight on our history, the history of our ENTIRE COUNTRY. There were Northerners who owned slave too by the way. If the North had had a semi-tropical climate that supported these cash crops, it would have seen just as much slavery and, because of a resulted greatly increased African American population, more persistent racial tensions and inequality. Blaming the South and characterizing them in the way you have done does nothing to solve the problem of racism still in our country! Okay, I’m done rambling!

Why should I feel guilty about something I didn’t do? I personally haven’t enslaved, colonized, or crusaded, and I refuse to allow whiny bastards to make me feel even remotely guilty for it.

Do not criticize someone who is fighting for our country, no matter how much you disagree with his racial remarks- which by the way, are comments on a piece insulting white people to begin with.
