Does anyone remember B.O. saying that we needed the stimulus immediately to prevent unemployment from going up to 8%?
Think about this: there were 1.6 million more jobs in America the day the stimulus bill was passed than there are today!
The average recession lasts 10 months, this ones been going on for about 20 months. It will end, of course, but the end will have little to do with B.O’s. obsession with spending our money.
The reason that government spending doesn’t work is that the money has to come from somewhere. There are only a few places the government can get money to pass around. They can tax, but that takes money out of the economy. They can barrow but that creates a debt that hurts the economy over the long run or they can just print money but that creates inflation. Inflation is the devaluing of money. So spening puts money into the economy but money is also taken out of the economy so the net effect is minimul. Many economists believe that government spending actually hurts the economy.
Also, B.O. is pushing money to places where it will not be used to really jump-start the economy. When the government spends money there is no, “Multiplier effect.” Money to ACORN, how many jobs were created? On the other hand ….when the government cuts taxes there is a huge multiplier effect, why? Because business owners know exactly how to spend money so that their businesses will grow. When you cut taxes business owners use the relief to grow.
So why won’t B.O. just cut taxes? Because when you cut taxes “we the people” decide how best to spend where as when you have government spending the government gets to decide how the money is spent. In other words, this is about power and government
you cannot cut taxes if there’s no workers to tax!

Good question: First, not everyone is unemployed. If 9.5% of the workforce is unemployed then 90.5% of the workforce is employed. Cutting these peoples taxes results in more money in their pockets which THEY can spend in the way that THEY believe will most benefit their lives.
Second, and most importantly, is cutting taxes on business. When you cut taxes on business you unleash a huge power because instantly you have millions of business people intent on growth and profit with money to do just that. Right now the corporate tax in America is the second highest in the world. This high tax means that every American business is at a disadvantage in relation to a business located outside the U.S. In my mind, this is a crime. It creates unemployment and it hurts America’s economic future. A few bureaucrats in Washington trying to micro manage the economy can not hold a candle to millions of American business people intent on growing their businesses. If the government would get out of the way the American economy would take off.
Obama has an ideology which prevents him from cutting taxes. B.O. believes that cutting taxes would be, “Helping the wealthy.” To ensure that the wealthy are not helped he’ll punish everyone. B.O. believes the government has the best ideas and that government action is the best way to help the people. Republican’s know differently, people know best what they need and the best ideas come from the people.
The 9.7% number is severely underestimated, and underreported. The reason for this is b/c the govt. recently changed the way the unemployment stats are reported including those only collecting UI. The ones who are off the insurance b/c of length, given up, or underemployed (part-timers) are not included. Hence, the unemployment numbers are much higher 17-21%. it is 12-31% in CA alone. this is a crisis situation. we have 1,300,000-1,500,000 losing their UI benefits by the end of 2009. we are headed into a depression; we are probably in one now, but the govt. want to keep people in the dark, use health “care” distractions, prevent hysteria, suicides, etc…by using a new methodology of calculating unemployment to keep numbers falsely low/lagging way behind accuracy.
You are absolutely correct, the real number of unemployed is much greater than 9.7% and for all the reasons you give. I used 9.5 – 9.7% because it’s a government number that has a good chance of being agreed upon in these posts.
CA is unique and shouldn’t be taken for the average situation all over the country. I believe that unemployment in CA is about 20%.
Spending money into the economy, as B.O. is attempting to do (Keynesian economics) looks great on paper and it’s something that the public, who largely know zip about economics, can get their heads around, but it doesn’t work. If it was possible to spend into the economy and create growth than countries all over the world would have stupendous growth …but they haven’t had good growth even in a good year.
This spending allows the government to look like it’s doing something, to look like they are being sociality conscious and most importantly to push their socialist agenda. The crisis can be used to advice the idea of more government if the people believe that government holds the answers to their problems. I don’t believe that this is any sort of grand conspiracy, just a world view. The view of B.O. and gang is that government’s job is to “Help” the people and that the government has the best tools to do the job. As we’re finding out, he’s wrong.
Depression? I doubt it …look for a 1970;s style economy, slow if any growth, persistently higher then normal unemployment and creeping inflation. It’s easy to underestimate the American business person, they will find a way to make a profit, it’s just a question of how big a profit ….how much growth.
While B.O. touts the idea of spending into the economy he hurts the real engine of growth in the U.S., American business.
