Because if a white kid gets crappy grades and can’t seem to ever do anything right in school, they are still gifted! How you ask? They are just TOO smart for school. They are too creative, too advanced to care about the trivial minutiae of the day to day operations of school.

Don’t forget to mention doctor shopping until you find the one that’ll diagnose junior with ADD, thus earning him double-time on all exams. Remember, if a White Child isn’t excelling, it’s because he’s sick, not because he just isn’t excellent.

I am a teacher and white people use this one to segregate their children from the less desirable children of color. It is really how amazing how many gifted white children there are when it means that your child can go into a special class set up for gifted children.

I was considered “gifted” until I was later found to be “emotionally handicapped”. That pretty much evened things out, though I did become “artistically inclined” in the process.

Back in the Seventies when they put me in one, they gave us an IQ test you had to get 130 or better on. I guess they’ve changed the rules. Hippies are awesome.

I know a couple of people like that but honestly they usually only have one kid like that and then another with “problems” that they don’t always pass off as gifted.

the only “gifted” I want my kids to be is to be smart enough to qualify for some free college tuition. that’s a “gift” a parent can appreciate.

Aside from the fact that I have no desire to have children of my own, what is worse than being around a bunch of screamers, is also having their parents tell me how special and bright they are while their rugrats are picking their noses and demanding a piece of candy or they’ll defiantly poop their pants……what a genius!

I feel like such a sucker for struggling to pass the “enriched” and “excelled” classes now with all my fellow suburban pseudo-intellectuals . I should have stayed in the regular classes. I would have had a higher GPA and not have felt so inadequate.

I wish there was a time machine I could get into, so I could go have a talk with the 1988 version of myself.

To Mike: You still need a 130 IQ to technically be considered gifted, but there’s a little thing called ‘private testing’ where parents can pay for a few extra IQ points to be added onto their children’s scores.
I don’t know how much the ‘awesome hippies’ take part in that. They send their kids to alternative schools with no grades. Duh.

I’ve gone to an all gifted school since I was in second grade, and it’s true, atleast 85% of us are white and many of us have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. But I’d say it’s more of a rich parent trend, not a general white person trend. Most of the ‘ethnic’ kids at my school are fucking loaded, just like most of the white kids. It just happens that are a lot more snobby white people out there incessantly bragging about their kids.

I was in the gifted education program during most of my elementary school years in the mid-to-late 1970s, with a professionally tested IQ of 140, yet I later dropped out of Middle School (back when it was still called “Junior High School”) at age 13, and became a convicted felon, habitual drug user, and right-wing anarchist. It just goes to show that its not always a choice between smart kids who do well in school, and dumb kids who don’t. Some smart kids really just don’t do well in the intellectually stultifying environment of the American system of public education, where one is rewarded more for completing a seemingly endless series of mindless busy work assignments and otherwise obeying the rules without question, than for learning the material, innovation, just plain reacting intelligently to the supposedly educational experience, etc.

Never-the-less, despite how boring, repetitive, and essentially non-educational going to school was for me, I probably would have kept going, were it possible for smart, nerdy, shy kids to have friends back then. These days, it seems like schools are filled with all sorts of little cliques made up primarily of people who are outside the mainstream. Back in the 80s, the mainstream was all there was. If you weren’t a part of it, everyone hated you. There were other people who weren’t part of the mainstream either, but we were all such alienated, atomized individuals floating helplessly in a sea of constant, brutal hostility and contempt, that it simply never occured to any of us to hang out with each other and be our own group of friends.

But on the plus side, at least we weren’t whiney, faggoty-assed little “emo” twerps. Even if I die in prison one day, they’ll never be able to take that away from me.

I grew up in a white trash family. Every one of us kids ended up in a classroom for the mentally retarded when we started in school. None of us ever stayed in the classroom we started in because the teachers knew we didn’t belong there.

How do I know this is true? My oldest sister got access to our school records. Funny thing was, none of the IQ tests used to track us into that class were in our records.

I was in the G&T (gifted and talented) program until I got to high school, because then I stopped giving a shit. I never understood WHY I was there, until my mother told me that some second grade teacher found me reading some OMFG ADVANCED book (like Charles Dickens), threw me into tests that proved that I did indeed have a higher reading level than your average bear, and tossed me into classes where the other G&T kids looked down on the normal kids.

Fuck that. G&T classes involved way more homework, snooty little twats that suffered from localised elitism, and being forced to read the same ol’ drivel that the normal kids read, except at a much faster rate.

They were not special. I was not special.High school came around and I decided not to sign back up. Because of this, I’m sure, I walked away with a relatively decent GPA, got to skip tons of school and had way more free time as a result.

I taught G&T kids for several years and they all seemed like refugees from Orwell or Dickens, nice kids but fleeing from God-knows-what sorts of domestic and parental horrors. They particularly liked re-enacting the Punic Wars, re-inventing the telescope, and listening to a Buddhist priest, but they never seemed to want to go home. Must be a lesson there somewhere. I thought they were all lost and wonderful; no idea how they came to be called either G or T. Every one of them was white except my kids, who were rather stylishly mocha.

ME TOO! lolol. I was a clever enough, I suppose, but was a terrible student who was ditching school as much as possible from 6th grade on. my dad skipped two grades as a kid, so they skipped ME two grades and I ended up being sent back to do it again. hahahaa. oh well.

But also, to those in this thread that want to get all anti-intellectual: G/T classes were not a waste of time, at least at my former high school. Elitist? Absolutely. Challenging and good college/post-college prep? Yes, that too. I took one “regular” class during high school because I thought it was worth a reduced work load — now that was an embarrassing, frustrating waste of time. (Though I did have fun talking to classmates I’d literally never met before.)

Most of us realize our kids aren’t gifted, we’re just looking for a way to get our kids out of the general ed classroom where they might be influenced by all the loser kids. That should explain to you why ANY reason is a good enough one to call our ids gifted and get them into the program. The reason we ask each other about whether our kids are in the gifted program is to accertain whether or not they are our peers who are with the program and know the routine.

Nope, now all the gifted programs are filled with asian kids. There’s barely any room for white kids.

To be qualified for the gifted program, you must take an IQ test and score 130 or higher. In my gifted program, there were Black, Asian, Latino, and White children. Gifted programs aren’t necessarily discriminatory. Also, not all white children are gifted. This one is pretty much bullshit.

I will say, though, that being able to get out of class for a couple hours a day and not doing much was a plus.

My school/gifted program was mostly jews!

It doesn’t matter about the asian/black/latino aspect, that there are tons of gifted kids from those cultural backgrounds, what’s funny is the principals stated: that all the kids are gifted. This is super true, everyone today is such a special snowflake.

As a former teacher:
in the school district I worked in in Albuquerque, there were 2 ways for kids to get tested for the gifted program:
1. Teacher identifies the kids, gets them tested. (racial balance of kids matches ration of school)
2. Parents request kids be tested, then argue at IEP meetings if they were borderline (or if the test came back twice exceptional – like dyslexic with high IQ, they would ALWAYS choose the gifted program instead of getting them help so they could actually read). Ratio skews very white/”northern New Mexican” (ie “Spanish”, not Mexican… yeah right).

So I always wanted to barf when parents insisted I get their really average kid tested. The schools frown on teachers barfing on parents.

As someone who has actually tested in the .1 percentile (that’s the top one tenth of one percent) I just want to say that we aren’t gifted. We are normal. The rest of you are just amazingly stupid. How else could George W Bush get elected? Twice???

I’m white, and I’m not gifted. I “failed” the test. So what if people are in the gifted class, most of them are stupid anyway. Besides, being “gifted” adds too much stress to life. i.e. my sister, she’s “gifted” and was thrust into a “gifted” program at the end of her 8th grade year, had to learn a years worth of stuff in like 2 weeks. Sucked majorly. Now shes the valedictorian of her high school junior class, but she doesnt sleep at night because she stays up studying for her AP classes… So yea, I’d rather not be gifted and lead a normal life. =3

Yeah, I was in a ‘gifted’ program. I agree that they are total bull****. The biggest thing it taught me was elitism. I truly believed that everyone else was an idiot, until I actually dropped out of school and met non-gifted people. Some of the most insightful and creative people I know are NOT from the gifted program.

It is totally true that I never wanted to go home! Through the gifted program, school became a place were I was validated regardless of how immature, irritating or anti-social I was. Now that I live in a non-segregated world, there is so much I have to learn from ‘non-gifted’ people. (As IF a few IQ points ever made a real difference…)

I thought at first that this might be amusing, but to me it just seems bitter. I did want to say that it seems a number of posters here haven’t really looked into the phenomenon of gifted kids very deeply. They truly are different, and they come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. I know that identifying students from minority populations can be challenging, but please don’t assume that all white children in gifted programs don’t belong there.
Some of the “emotionally handicapped” kids and the insightful/creative ones do, though. Giftedness and creativity are not necessarily mutually-exclusive. Giftedness and learning disabilities are not, either. Who am I? I teach gifted kids. I also teach speakers of languages besides English, many of whom are also in the gifted program. Am I white? Yup. And I live in Maine, one of the “whitest” states in the nation, so I don’t have much to say about percentages.

Once again you have never left the rich elitist pretentious white American areas of California. You would find that everything you write here is actually a very small minority of white Americans

If you’re worried about white oppression, reclaim your culture and master it. Engage with both it and Western culture. If you have none, do more than just indulging in multicultural tokenism that makes you feel cosmopolitan and urbane: really learn about another culture. Try the world of Biblical Israel, since by now that should be foreign enough to a “post-Western” West.

I’m a CPA and my husband is a lawyer. We have three kids and we’re white, so of course, all of our kids arel *gifted.* We pretend with the first two, but the third one is so god-damned special we’ve had to change schools 7 times (8th grade) until we finally found a school for stupid white kids who can be called gifted. It’s costing us a fortune.

Haha…they think they are gifted until they meet an asian or pakistani or indian person, who all seem to beat them, and they make fun of the white kid because they are putting so much effort, and doing worse…. heh

By definition, gifted kids are geniuses. A genius is the top 2-3% of population, or usually an IQ over 140, the same criteria used for identifying gifted kids.

And not all of them are white. (ahem).

Are there any white kids that really are gifted? Or are they all only fake gifted? I remember when I was in first grade they gave an IQ test to all the kids and put 5 or so kids into the “gifted” program? Does this mean those kids really weren’t gifted it was just cause they were white?

I attended an all gifted school in the 90’s. 130 IQ was the cut-off when I was first accepted. A few years later the school became so over-populated, they raised it to 150. Most of my peers were more rich than smart. We always knew which kids were selected, and which were privately tested. At least half the school was asian. Out of 2,000 students, 3 were black, and very wealthy. Poor kids got pushed out. They had too many emotional problems, family problems. The schoold didn’t know how to handle them.

Both of my parents are gifted teachers and I was myself a gifted student. Fact: Whites were required to score 130 or better on IQ tests. Minorities were allowed to bend the rules and join the program if they scored >120.

One thing you forgot is that the “gifted” child has to have a black (Caribbean) nanny, or if going on the cheap, an illegal Mexican one. . . It used to be Irish nannies but with “the troubles” being over the Irish are all actors now. . . .

If you tell a white male child he’s gifted, he ends up living with his mother until he’s 60, or until she dies (whatever comes first).

I love this! I live in a posh county, and I’ve never met so many “gifted” kids in my life. I have had several parents “casually” ask me what I know about the EL (exceptional learners) program at our kids’ school. I don’t know if the purpose of this question is to determine if I think my kids are gifted or to let me know they think their kids are gifted (probably both). Those sneaky white people! LOL. Since when did it become a stigma to have a NORMAL kid in a NORMAL class? This is definitely the case in my white corner of the world.

I was a child from a poor, small-town family in the midwest with parents who were completely disinterested in anything going on in my life especially at school. Yet, somehow despite these circumstances, I ended up in a gift program at school called Project Challenge.

Although we knew ourselves how lame this actually was and resigned to calling ourselves Reject Challenge.

I wonder if they still even have that program these days or if it’s considered too un-PC to single out a handful of kids as being more gifted than ALL of the gifted kids in school.

oh yeah i know all about this. i am a total idiot, but to my white parents i am GIFTED. so much that they sent me to a fucking gifted school, with lots of other gifted white kids, who are also total fucking retards, but they’re GIFTED! and when my grades started slipping (relatively, like a bad to worse thing) they got me diagnosed by a nice white psychologist with gifted white kids as ADD (and to get a “gifted” white kid diagnosed with ADD all he/she has to do is get bored during a 30-minute session where you do nothing but press a button every time a computer screen blinks, and absolutely nothing else). so I’m still gifted, my abilities are just hampered by my ADD! yaaaaay ritalin!

You’re completely right to a point, but I’m going to call bull**** on some of it.
My parents thought I was pretty average kid, but they didn’t want me hanging out with some of the twits in regular classes.
I was accepted into a GT class, where in all probability, there was one really genuinely smart kid out of a class of 25. Most of them were all clueless like me. It’s the same reason my parents paid for math tutors and flute lessons. The same reason why snotty soccer moms talk about their kids like they’re the next beckham or do their kid’s science projects themselves.
These people know their brats aren’t any more intelligent or talented than anyone else’s. In fact, they may be the most genetically challenged little pigs ever. But can you really blame these people for not wanting their kids to wind up smoking crack or passed out on the floor of a gas station restroom? I mean, having kids is a massive lottery, it seems. Imagine spending your retirement savings on Junior’s extra curriculars and he still ends up a lonely, malajusted loser that wont leave home after 30.

When a gifted program or school only accepts 200 students per year, there are over 500 applications and when they the child does not get accepted, counselors are hounded to the max as to why not? I’m white and gifted, and I barely got through high school. The gifted classes were about 1/3 white, 1/3 black, and 1/3 hispanic/asian/other, racially. about 1/10 of the class was like me, failing class and being lazy.

The other kids were straight A kids, and all went off to college. I became a drug dealer. Go figure.

Most gifted kids are learning disabled kids who are smart rather than stupid. That’s why so many of them screw up in school. Being “Smart” just means that their programs get less funding.

this site is frickin’ fun readin’!! my husband and i have two grown children, they BOTH were in the G/T program in elementary. our oldest was in 2nd grade when in 1983 when our rural school district began a G/T program. my husband was on the G/T Board for a short while, he became bored with the drivel at their meetings which included a few token parents, a couple of teachers and administrators!!! funny things: 1) kids weren’t “tested” until the 2nd grade, and on teacher recommendation, 2) BOTH of our kids had IQ scores lower than the 130 mentioned, 3) we knew they were bright kids, and paid attention in school because they were taught that education was important and so was respecting their teachers. but did we think they were gifted? nah. i was enrolled in college and became a teacher. and i’ve heard my share of G/T teachers, gurus talk about identifying “gifted” kids in our classrooms. but that is old talk, haven’t heard it used in the past half-dozen years, at least. G/T has gone by the wayside, but now each
child can have their own educational plan! how darn specia is that?!!

my observation on this topic is that 90% of the so called gifted kids have older siblings…and that’s where the more “mature” thinking comes from, including talk about boobs and vagina when they are only 6 years old…curious if anyone ever did a study/statistic on it

I have to say being “gifted” pretty much saved my sanity. But maybe that’s because I was white trash rather than a WASP, like most of the white people spoken of here. My parents weren’t pushing all of us into gifted–neither of my sisters were.

But where I went to school the homecomming queen was the mother of two, most of the kids dropped out and hunting was an official excused absence (I have no problem with hunters, I just think that school should be a priority.)

Having one teacher to go to when I was getting mercilessly picked on was what kept me sane. My gifted councilor knew how to apply for scholarships that my parents had no clue about (being white trash and all), and the school councilor was too lazy to show me. When I wasn’t learning anything in history, she helped me petition the school board for a more advanced class. She helped me test out of the lower levels of English.

And yes, there were those parents who INSISTED that their precious bay-bee was gifted, even in the white trash schools. Our school simply allowed only testing with the school and the IQ had to be above a certain number. I had a 160 so there was no problem.

I can promise you that if it weren’t for our gifted program I would have flunked many of the lower level classes. I wouldn’t have done the work. I would not have gone to college, and I wouldn’t be a contributing member of society.

Gifted programs are abused. Having a high IQ is as much a disability as a low one. It’s not a honor to splash on your “precious one”, and excuse them from work. Gifted programs should be designed to kick their little gifted butts in gear!!!!! It should be like saying “I have cancer!”

When they are good, they make less pot smokers, not more.

People can call this blog this or that, but I call it funny. I am positive that some publisher will pick this up and want to make a book out of it, perhaps the author will even become a temporary celebrity a la Jeff Foxworthy.

As a person of mixed race, though white appearing, I love this blog for its accurate depiction of the experience of white, urban, professionals. It is astounding to hear what white people will confide to me not knowing my mixed race status, and thus the veneer is cracked on occasion, despite a thick, left-of-center coat of polish. Usually as a quick save, the white person will explain that they are used to speaking candidly with their Mexican friends . . . though I highly doubt that the “friends” they mention would consider THEM a friend.

The gifted child thing is just symptomatic of the way how kids now are so ridiculously catered to. Music lessons, sport practice (all which they are driven to, even if it is just blocks away) its become where children themselves are the ones actually in charge of families instead of the parents themsleves, breeding an entire generation arrogant narcissists who, more than ever have naively come to believe that the world DOES in fact revolve them. The Real World will come as an especially rude shock when they find out that unlike what Mommy and Daddy told they are in fact NOT that special.

I went to racially mixed schools. I took honrs classes and never once saw a black or hispanic. It was all whites and asians. So people claiming that their gifted programs were 1/3 blacks and 1/3 hispanics are full of crap. My graduate classes are still full of whites and asians. I’ve seen only two hispanics. When I was a teacher in a suburb outside of Boulder (90-something%white) a parent told me that when she’d been talking to other parents at a youth soccer game, she’d learned that everyone had a child who was either “gifted” or in special education. Either white children are “gifted” or there’s a clinical reason why they’re not.

i do think this blog is funny minus the racist crap, because it’s pretty spot on with the stereotypical upper middle class. the gifted thing is so overrated, but in our gifted program in elementary school, we went once a week to a class that actually challenged us and it was much more individualized since there were only 6 of us. i think a better program would be to have something similar to this, but instead of so called “gifted” people, offer it to the kids that genuinely want to learn more.

Carlos I was just wondering from what you said earlier. Are you half Mexican? If you are Half Mexican half White (anglo w/e) doesn’t that make you just plain old white? Mexicans are mostly indigenous and Spaniard some have a splash of african or northern european but mostly Spanish and Indigenous. So if you blend that with white american you get almost completely or easily more than half “white” ancestry.

Stop me if I’m wrong, but I didn’t know there was a 1 drop rule for Mexicans too. Identify with whatever you feel like, but there’s another perspective on it.

Curse the gifted programs. I was labled as one of these poor kids in the third grade. I was always good at taking tests and I know most of the answers when I watch Jeopardy, but unless you go on game shows it is a pretty useless skill. I also wanted to take an auto mechanic vo-tech class with my electives in high school because I like working on cars and the counselor and my parents shot it down. I was a lousy student, but the valedictorian cheated off me during tests in our AP classes.

I was in pretty much every honors or AP course growing up, and in the classes which weren’t, there was a very noticeable difference. It was so much better being in class with other students who were interested in learning, and I got along much better with them.

Now, the elementary school gifted programs, which were additional work on extra subjects, were useless. I did not like extra work while remaining in classes with non-challenging work taught at a slow pace. I would much rather have the extra time to do the non-challenging homework and thus have more time to play once home.

The gifted classes were mostly white and Asian, but that was true of the places where I lived as well.

The mainstream is where it’s at. I grew up not rich, but white, in the butt-end of a VERY white county in northern NJ, and there were no G&T programs, but there >>were<< AP classes in HS. We did have an adjunct program–privately run & funded–that gave classes like rocketry, computers, chemistry, etc. on Saturdays in the best school district in the county to those that qualified, but we were not segregated in the public schools. It was bad enough that most of the other kids knew me and a few others–tested together, a 2nd time, to confirm our 130+ IQs–were “special.” To have segregated us would have been like homocide in those tough white Jersey schools!

I attend a High School which is probably about 95% white Caucasian. Next year there will be over 120 kids enrolled in AP English out of a class of about 300, the majority of these kids are waived in or their classes are made easier until they qualify because if they don’t then something is wrong. As someone who is actually gifted (I have an IQ of over 140 Stanford-Binet) this is incredibly frustrating. All ready most of the kids in my higher-end classes don’t belong there, which means the teacher assigns more homework or busywork, boosting their grades and lowering mine because I have trouble making myself do useless homework.

You couldn’t be more right! Parents who can’t acknowledge how awful their children are create some of the laziest, most self-absorbed wastes of space on the planet. Not to mention crazy psycho serial killers…. And white parents are the absolute worst about it!

When I was in elementary I was in the TAG (Talented And Gifted… apparently the acronym was prettier than GAT, or something) program with four other girls. We were the Smart, Special People.

I’ve also got ADD, asperger’s, mood disorders, and anxiety. Some days I can’t make eye contact with people, or talk above a whisper, or go anywhere without at least one other person. A year ago my parents almost put me in an alternate campus because I was struggling so much, but they didn’t.

I’m the “smart, misunderstood” girl. It kind of sucks.

Ugh, This is so TRUE. I’m in public high school right now, and it pisses me off how students who don’t belong in a certain class get in anyway.

For 10th grade, you have an option of going to regular global studies, or take a placement test for AP Euro. Those kind of classes should be small, right? Not if half of those kids were just “signed” into the course instead of accepted through the test. It’s absolute BS. Alot of classes are like that in my school. The Symphony Orchestra has at least 30 more people than the Regular Orchestra. There’s 5 levels of math for 11th grade (the “slow” math, regular math, pre-calc, Honors pre-calc, 11th grade honors), which makes it easier for white people to brag (they have 3 “accelerated” choices to brag about)…

But hey, that’s what you get for going to a school known for producing at least 4 Intel Semi-Finalists every year. Thank God I’ve got easy-going asian parents who accept my average-ness.

I agree. This one is disgusting. I knew one family where their youngest daughter was traumatized the day she failed the test to be diagnosed as TAG when all three of her older siblings had. I also knew a dad who complained at length at a staff meeting about his daughter not getting an ‘A’ in soccor because the coach felt she was dogging it and this screwed up her 4.0 GPA. I wanted to tell him he should thank the coach for saving his daughter from more years of sucking up to the whims of every single teacher to preserve her perfect GPA. But I didn’t say it because at the time I liked my job.

hahaha gifted!! i was trnsfered to gifted and honors classes because i did nothing in class and mnaged to get As in test, the only difference i notices in those “special” classes was that they triple your homework (yea thats very special) i got out after teh first year. also all the stuff in honors, advanced gifted program (or howver you callit) is the base curriculum of almost all other countrie’s public or private system (even third and developing ones)

My (white) 5th grader is in the gifted program but she is totally in the minority there– it’s mostly Asian kids in the program at her school. So “gifted” children is something asian people like as well, apparently.

Gifted programs are giant sponges soaking-up district resources that at one time were meant for all students. But these days, unless you are labeled as “gifted” you will NOT be offered a dynamic classroom environment, individualized instruction etc. etc. …

The reason minority kids aren’t labelled gifted as often is because then they’re told they’re “acting white” and decide they should hide it. I think some groups do a pretty good job of keeping their own bright kids down. It’s pretty sad.

It seems that over half the people who read this don’t understand it’s a joke. Seems we are experiencing a lack of gifted children from all races. I’m going to go to work and spend the next few hours pondering how I could possibly take this seriously.

I’ve been in many of the G&T classes, although in my school, they’re called “EPP” in the younger grades. I was selected in for them when I was in 2nd grade. Everything was fine, except that we had to do both the HW for the regular classroom AND the EPP course (mostly English EPP). By the time I got to 4th grade, I’d gotten lazy and couldn’t manage my time. I then dropped out of English EPP so I wouldn’t have to do as much work. The next year, they had me tested for special-ed because I was simply lazy (and probably ADD, never got tested) and never turned projects (which I didn’t learn much from, anyways) on time because I was adding random effects and not focusing on the content. By the time they got me into a “modified” program, I’d already developed a work ethic and I basically wasted my special instructor’s time because I should never have been there. Now I’m is HS and doing just fine.

And I don’t get good grades. But I do think that what they are teaching at this point is pretty pointless. But no I and my parents do not think I am a genius.

It’s really sad for the children, who are repeatedly put under enormous pressure, and taught to feel like it isn’t ok to just be who they are.

Have you ever noticed that the sort of education people will describe as adequate or commendable for other people’s children is *not* the sort that rich people give their own children? Elite private academies don’t cram forty children into each classroom, have an impoverished library, tailor their curriculum to reflect standardized tests, offer a few perfunctory foreign language classes, and leave music, art, dance, drama, and laboratory sciences out of the curriculum entirely.

This explains the mystery of why so many middle-class white children are “gifted.” It’s because their parents:

(1.) don’t want to be taxed to pay for a school system that could give every child a chance at a good education (you know, the kind of public school systems that affluent states had in the 1970s),

and

(2.) can’t afford top-notch private schools,

but

(3.) want *their* children to have a first-rate education.

Therefore, their children must be Gifted and Talented. What they mean by this is that their children deserve to have more resources devoted to their education; have better teachers, smaller class sizes, and a richer curriculum; and be protected from having to share their classrooms with disadvantaged children whose needs might slow lessons down, thereby causing the “gifted” children to become bored.

The real point isn’t that their own children are gifted. It’s that all those other children *aren’t* gifted, and thus deserve to be given a pauper’s education.

Here’s the Low Down:

White people are the reason for many, if not all of our current and past nations problems.

Beginning with the slave trade. Yes, some Africans did sell slaves to the european whites. But, whites brought up the idea of using Africans. Mostly, because of how cheap they were. If it weren’t for the Africans, the whites would chosen some other group of people to do the their dirty work, because their lazy (white) asses couldn’t get out there and pick their own got damn cotton!

Blacks, Latinos and other minority groups are practically forced to live in areas that are purposely contaminated with nuclear waste (which causes cancers and various other deadly diseases, that kill mostly minorities). The public school system is designed for all minorities to fail.

Also, white people will not get the fact that black people invented 99% of the things that made this country what it is today. White people strive to make themselves feel superior, because in reality they are the most unoriginal people ever existed.

This is one of the big reasons why I quit being a teacher. I couldn’t deal with the overbearing parents demanding better grades for their idiot kids because they were “gifted.”

I was labeled as “gifted” starting in third grade. I don’t know why-I never worked particularly hard in school and I was only a slightly-better-than-average student in the end. Maybe I got lucky on the test or something. I didn’t reap a single reward from the gifted classes except being able to use Cure lyrics as examples of poetry because I was too lazy to go to the library.

At one point when I was in elementary school, they had this sort of group therapy for kids project. My teachers signed me up for it every single round because I did things like putting the head of my Barbie doll on the end of my pencil. Gifted, schmifted.

Funny post, amusing if a lil misguided. Our school district uses something similar to an iq test to determine who gets into the gifted program. That’s 2% of the population, unless you’re in the Seattle area where I heard the plank has been raised higher so it’s 1% or so for them. Or, if you score in the top 2 to 5% on an achievement test, you can get in as well. Not a hundred percent by a long shot. At any rate, in high school the gifted classes are replaced by the honor and AP system and everyone can get into those on teachers’ recommendations, so the point is kinda moot. The post had me worked up because I believe the gifted education is one of the best benefits American public schools have to offer – giving the smarter students a challenge they need even if their parents cannot afford to send them to prep schools. We have kids from middle-class families of all ethnicities and races in our district’s gifted classes.
Also, good news for the author, the gifted ed is now on its way out – No Child Left Behind has been effectively killing it. The schools have to spend so much effort training kids for standardized tests that most districts have no money left for gifted education anymore. Hooray? or something…

We didn’t have to take handwriting and because of that, all six of us suck at writing in cursive to this day. I live in Canada and it seems we have a bit of a different definition of gifted here. It has to do with intelligence as well as thought patterns. In order to be educated in a gifted program, a child (or teen) must go through a psychological evaluation to determine if their IQ is high enough and if they fit the psychological profile. There are also schools and programs for kids that are brilliant in science, math, art, etc… I’ve always thought that “gifted” also denotes a different way of thinking as well.

HAHAHA! Damn, I was in the gifted program for 10 years and I came out with a nice bong collection and a healthy disrespect for authority and structure. It’s entirely true that there are two distinct types of gifted thinkers:

Really sharp kids who try hard.
AND
Even sharper kids who don’t try at all, become demotivated and have existential crises at age 10 because they start to grapple with truths they are not prepared for.

The first kind don’t need any help, as their path is clear to them and they get all the scholarships and acclaim anyways. The second kind need a lot of help, usually in the form of relaxing/mind expanding drugs and books written by weird alchoholic old men. (Thompson, Vonnegut, etc) If you’re in the second group you know exactly what I’m talking about.

i am white child in accelerated program at high school. while most people in program are not white, half of the white children not in the program claim they should be in it, then offer excuse. it kinda pisses me off because half of the people claiming they should be in the program are really damn stupid and obnoxious.

I was in a “gifted” program in 2nd and 3rd grades and then a magnet school for 4th-6th grades, a gifted program in 7th and 8th grade and then honors and AP courses in high school…and I still found this section hilarious. The author is not discrediting gifted education programs, but rather poking fun at the white people who refuse to admit that their children should be medicated or are not so bright. All parents would like to believe their children are “gifted.”

Now, compared to each OTHER, we’re most certainly NOT all gifted. But by group, yeah, of course, all of us are, because as a group we are up there mentally. I am gifted

I teach “gifted” children. my school district sets the guidelines for determining which children are gifted and it is complete BS. The goal is to have 20% of the kids identified as gifted, which is a joke in itself. There are plenty of white and black parents who are determined that their kids are gifted. Of the 90 “gifted” kids at my school, I’d say that maybe 15 are genuinely gifted. The rest are what we used to call “above average.” It’s usually the rich white parents who are fixated on giftedness, but it’s increasingly common among black families too.

People put to much into the fact that their child is “gifted” when in all reality, that is how most kids are, it is the “norm”. People need to stop thinking their kids or themselves are better than other people and start teaching their children that it is okay to be equal to someone else. I have a one year old and I am going to teach him the value of not trying to be better than others or always thinking he needs to compete with other to have or do things better. Humans already have a natural competitive nature, we, as parents, do not need to add to it.

I got this email from Jonas’ mother:

Hello Family,

We hope that you are all doing well. The kids are really looking forward to seeing all of the Toronto gang soon (just 10 days to go!). Mark and I are looking forward to our break as well.

Just wanted to give you an update concerning Jonas.

A couple of weeks ago, the principal of the kids’ school brought to our attention what we had already suspected: Jonas is precocious. We were encouraged to have him tested to help to inform the school’s thinking about how to best help him.

We followed the school’s advice and Jonas had a series of 3 meetings with a pediatric neuropsychologist over the last couple weeks. His intellectual intelligence was tested using the KABC-II (Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children), one of 3 standard international tests for children of between 3 and 12. He really enjoyed the experience (its mostly a bunch of games) and had a good rapport with Laetitia, the psych. We found out that he is ambidextrous! He did the test in French.

We are still waiting for the detailed report on the test (which we will receive tomorrow), but we were already able to get the IQ score. Jonas’ IQ has been evaluated as 144. This places him in the top 99.7th percentile (the average IQ is 100 and Einstein’s was 160). According to most researchers, Jonas’ IQ would be considered “very superior” or “genius/near genius”.

Based on their observations over the past 3 years and the results of the test, the school has decided to advance Jonas 1 year (from JK to SK). His teacher informed us that he is intellectually capable of advancing to 1st grade right now, but she thought that emotionally/socially it would be a mistake. She did recommend that we enrol him in another language (Chinese or Japanese) and music. He already plays soccer one per week and is actually being advanced a year in that as well come January.

So, as of January, Jonas will be in SK. He will be able to move back and forth between his new and old classes and he will actually have one of his former teachers from last year who is wonderful. He knows all the kids in the class and actually does some work with them already.

We wanted to let you all know about this for a few reasons:

First, you are all a part of the team that is raising him and we think it is important for you to know as much about him as we do. We are told that, based on his IQ, he does not think the way that most children do (surprise, surprise) and this will take some adjusting to.

Second, this is a family of very bright children, and at some point you may decide to have your kid(s) tested so we wanted to share our experience (which has been quite positive).

Third, we will not be with Jonas throughout the holidays and so it will largely fall to you to help get him excited about the idea of moving to SK.

Malachai is taking the news quite well, though he seems to feel a bit competitive and has vowed to improve his own performance. He will probably be tested in the winter as well. We are trying to explain to him that this news is nothing to feel inadequate about and that his has an incredible amount of talent.

It’s hilarious. They did a study that proved it has nothing to do with the kids, the gifted programs are just how classes should be taught.

That’s so obnoxious. I hate it when parents send crap like that to me or tell me about it. When are you going to realize i don’t care about your kids? And that letter is ridiculously long. She couldn’t have just said “oh, the school said my son is gifted.”
Also, the poor little brother is going to develop an inferiority complex.

If a child is truly gifted it is obvious to everyone around her whereas if a parent has to tell everyone how smart the child is, guess what? Let’s face it cream rises to the top.

I was dying when I read this post. I hear stuff like this all the time about white people and their kids. Also, I agree it has nothing to do with the kids. I have never been in a gifted program (I’m black), but I do have a lot of honors and AP classes. My mother doesn’t care if I am in a gifted program–she cares more about if I am doing well in school.

I’m white, I was put in a “gifted” program in my stereotypical suburban high school. It seems to me, “gifted” programs existed so that rich white doctor/lawyer parents could brag about their kids. A “gifted” program is also a good way to justify bragging about how freaking naturally intelligent you are. Because your “innate” intelligence has nothing to do with all of those head start programs, English as a first language, well staffed schools with small classes, or access to better educations resources (ex: textbooks and new computers).

Oh, gawd… reminds me of a story my mom told me about when I started school (yup, I was one of those capital-G gifted kids): a teacher friend of hers pulled her aide and said: “Look, don’t go in the first day and tell them Kelly’s gifted–they hear that from ALL the parents about ALL the kids. Just wait a couple weeks, let them find out for themselves, THEN call.”

Apparently mom took their advice, and when she did call, the teacher was all like, “Thank God! She’s already read through her textbooks! Help!”

Ha ha this blog is funny. I was in the gifted program when I was a kid and I’m black. Incidentally I’ll be going to law school soon. I know my parents loved and was proud that I was in this program as was my younger sister. I have to agree with one of the posters who said the gifted programs do promote competition and some of the high schools that are really only for gifted children promote sometimes “unhealthy competition”.

i got a 2380 SAT, which is the 99.94th percentile, and i’m white. but here’s what i’m willing to admit: I did a lot of SAT practice, I’ve always read a lot, and I’m a sick test taker, BUT I’m not gifted! I go to Dartmouth now, and there are SO MANY douchebags here who have been told that they special for their entire lives. i wanna see them show up to job interviews and just expect to get hired because they’re so special.

We refused to arrange a “gifted” program for our son, thinking he’ll do just fine in a regular class;we did not want to be stuck up. Also, we were told by the head of the fancy Private school in NYC that “all our students are gifted”. The result? Our son started to read at 3, at 4 he was improvising on a piano and knew periodic table of elements by heart, including the atomic weight, etc. He built majestic cities out of legos, drew and painted like someone twice his age. He was found to have perfect pitch, memorized “Lacrimosa” part from Mozart’s requiem. When he entered kindergarten of a private Manhattan school, which assured us that “all students here are gifted”, our child had been playing piano and cello with sheer musicality, could multiply and divide, solve word problems with 3 steps, read 2 parts of Harry Potter, enjoyed talking about differences between Ravel and Debussy musical languages.. And what? He was miserable in that kindergarten. He asked me why the books that were read by the teachers had so little text on each page, why children take so long to answer the easiest ever questions, why the teachers like to control everything, etc.

It was worst experience ever, my child got depressed and started to act out in the school– I was sent to the psychologist…

Accelerated education is really necessary sometimes, you know…

I taught high school in a “white suburban” community as late as 2007. Everyday I saw the effects of parents who thought their children were gifted.

The children who were pushed beyond their abilities or willingness usually collapsed under the pressure of honors/AP classes and sometimes looked for the easy way out like cheating/plagiarism (notice I wrote “sometimes,” not always). There was even a young man who committed suicide from the school at which I taught because of the disappointment he felt he was to his parents.

Or, they were told from an early age that they were gifted and had an air of entitlement about them and could do no wrong.

Having just had my first child in May, of course I think she is special. However, with my multiple years of teaching experience under my belt, I hope I can find the happy medium of prodding my child to explore her interests and excel in school and not pressure her to make straight As in high school in weighted classes so that she’ll get a full ride to college so mommy and daddy don’t have to go into debt to get her through college.

Every child is gifted in some way. However, very few are truly exceptionally “gifted” in the classic sense of the word as it refers to abilities.

Hmmm. I have two teenaged children who actually test in the gifted range–they aren’t “gifted” just on my say-so. While I want them to achieve to meet their potential, I also want them to be able to interact well with people of all ability levels.

Their giftedness is not a reason or excuse for their being unable to relate to the range of people we contact every day. How many people actually live their lives in a little bubble, surrounded only by people like them? To that end, I don’t shelter them, require them to pursue only “smart” interests, or pretend everything they do is great and perfect when it is not.

perhaps it’s more important to teach, encourage, and model kindness- if you want your child to really excel in this world…

I love giving children as gifts! They really are the gift that keeps on giving……. and so functional too….. they can do the dishes, mow the lawn, paint the house, do the laundry and other chores…. and they are tax deductions….. I grown my children in the basement- keeps them real white.

I was “gifted” before it became cool to be gifted (I’m in my mid-forties now). I have an IQ of 145, and worked my ass off, so I managed to graduate summa cum laude from college and made Phi Beta Kappa. (I worked my way through college, by the way, just in case anybody wants to assume I got a free ride of any kind. No scholarships for me, because I was kinda lazy in high school).

My kids are gifted. Yeah, gifted. All three have IQ’s right around 140. I had them all tested before entering public school so there would never be a problem getting them placed in the gifted programs. Because an earlier poster was right, gifted programs are taught the way all children should be taught.

The oldest was her high school valedictorian as well as captain of two sports teams. And she’s not a pain in the ass, she’s wildly popular, she’s a wild party girl and she’s paying her own way through college (third year now). At the tender age of 20 she’s earned grants to live and work in other countries. She’s bilingual, she’s getting ready to do something with her life, and I’m really enjoying watching her blossom.

The twins are both in magnet programs at different high schools. One is in the IB program, the other is in an engineering program. They are both on sports teams, and active in Girl Scouts. They are two of the nicest people I have ever known, and they have some of the nicest friends anyone could ever ask for.

How did this happen? Am I really gifted? Am I really a great parent?

Well, yes. Yes I am. Suck on that for a while!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!

Truthfully, I’ve got my shortcomings and I know what they are. My kids have their own albatrosses and as young adults they are starting to really understand what will hold them back if they don’t act now. Life has never been easy and I assume that it never will be.

Here’s what I hope I’ve taught my kids: Life’s short. Have fun. Work hard, play hard. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. Love your family.

If they get that from me, I’ve accomplished what I set out to do in life. That’s the real gift I hope my kids get.

You didn’t even mention white peoples’ obsession with their childrens’ looks. White people always have beautiful children who should model from the moment they are birthed. We do have a nasty habit of gossiping about other white peoples’ children however. We can’t wait to insult a newborn just seconds after the proud parent leaves with pictures in tow. “I think it had a tail!” or “Ugh, did you see how misshapen it’s head was?” Comments like these are immediatly followed by “I’m so lucky that MY child doesn’t look like that.” and “MY son is going to be such a heart breaker when he gets older!” Not only are our children always gifted in brains but in form as well. As a cardinal rule though, children from other ethnicities are always adorable and therefore are completely off limits for making snide comments- We’re critical of other white peoples’ children only.

I am an African American woman and I was placed in a gifted program at an early age. I was high school valedictorian. I love this book and, even more, I love the fact that opening comments on the list serves only to profoundly confirm the point that christian lander is trying to make. But I digress. I was labled as “gifted”, but had the emotional maturity of an infant. As an adult, I am very poorly adjusted and actually dropped out of college. Now i don’t need to hear a dialogue on overcoming adversity, I am fully aware that others have mounted far greater obstacles. But my reality is my own and it has led to my incapacitation. I have a 4 year old daughter who is a NORMAL child. She has unique talents and interests but does not show any signs of being gifted. And what a relief that is because she is happy and healthy without a hint of anxiety. Let it go, people. If your child is exceptionally bright, great. If your child is average, great. Love them and be grateful.

Man is this dead-on. My son actually tested into the school district’s G&T magnet school, which he attends. However, I have yet to meet a parent who’s kid DIDN”T test in – or so every putz I meet who has to bring it up, cause I don’t care, tells me so – the vast majority of which don’t go to the school. There’s always some nonsensical excuse made up about how in the end the parent didn’t feel it “wasn’t the right fit” or they don’t “buy into” the magnet school for G&T, or they feel the school their kid is attending actually provides a better education, or some other bullshit. Lies. Sour grapes. All of it. Are you kidding me?!? These people would MURDER somebody to get their kid into that school. Why? Because this post is dead on. White people always think their kid is “gifted.”
My oldest son is bright, but my other two I don’t think well end up being in that school. Which is fine. And if somebody asks me, I’ll tell, cuz they didn’t test in. Why make up a line of bullshit?

The first time I heard the term “playdate” I was like, “What the hell is that?!” When I was kid, I used to find other kids in the neighborhood to play with. Not so anymore. Hovering, neurotic, smothering white people now arrange for “playdates” with eachother’s kids, kind of like sports agents finding a new team for their client to play for.

What you need to understand about the playdate is that it has nothing to do with kids playing, but rather, is a chance for white people to interview one another and find out if the other kid’s parents are of sufficient affluence, standing in the community, and educational or professional achievement, to be worthy of having their kid play with the other kid. A “bad” address can kill a playdate.

See, its really more about white people validating themselves by having their child play with the child of another parent/couple that is at least of equal or higher social standing. The kid may be a miserable brat, but if his parents drive BMWs, have a fabulous home, and are well-known, rest assured there will be more playdates. Conversely, if the kid is real polite and nice, but his parents drop him off in an old, rusty car, live in an apartment, or nobody that matters knows his family, then rest assured, that will be the final playdate.

White people LOVE playdates. That should’ve been on the list, but oh well.

And don’t forget, the ‘gifted’ kid, if he doesn’t have straight A’s, MUST be diagnosed with ADHD and be put on amphetamine medications for the rest of their childhood, or even the rest of their life. And when the amphetamine pills cause the kid to turn into a train wreck, off to the psychiatrist and double the dose.

Typical white middle class mother:

“I never taught Johnny how to talk when he was younger so now he just rocks back and forth and counts ceiling tiles all day. He still doesn’t talk but he can stack cups faster than lightning, its almost like the part of his brain that he was going to use for talking got used for stacking cups instead. He’s so gifted, I just know that someday he’ll be on ESPN’s cup stacking championships. When the doctors told me he’s got assburger syndrome I felt awful, but then Jenny McCarthy said that it was the vaccines that did it and I am really a great mom because I put up with a special needs child, I mean gifted, I mean…”

Oh…my…god! Little Johnny knows that 1 + 1 = 2!!! and he’s only 2 years old! He can spell “dog”! It’s obvious to me that he will cure cancer someday.

I’m Black and grew up poor, but demonstrated the ability to thrive in an academically advanced curriculum therefore a really great teacher in my neighborhood school took notice and talked my mother into taking me to test for the gifted program offered at a school in an all Polish neighborhood. Needeless to say I passed, went on to a magnet highschool (where Michelle Obama was alumni) graduated then went on to a top tier university (Northwestern) and life is good.
I do not feel that I was any wiser than the kids in my neighborhood, or in my family, but I had better access to learning tools and enthusiastic educators. We even had a computer lab which was unheard of at the time. Unfortunately none of the kids in my Englewood neighborhood (where Jennifer Hudson’s family was murdered) were as lucky, but all it takes is a handful of teachers that give a damn and are dedicated to education to make a difference. If these children lack the foundation, independence and success as adults becomes an uphill battle.

Labelling a kid gifted is a guaranteed way to f**k that kid up for life. Most of them rebel and become coke heads or bulimics.

I was tested in late grade school or early junior high and put into gifted program. “Gifted program” at my school consisted of being pulled out of class once a week for 30 minutes and doing brain-teaser puzzles.

The gifted students in our public schools are an overlooked group. They really do need extra challenges or more advanced materials, but instead they are kept at the level of everyone else in the class.

I was so bored in school that I became a bit of a problem child. I’d try to find “unique” ways to tell the teacher I was bored, but it just landed me in the principals office. (Yelling out the answers before anyone else in class could answer, answering my math homework in roman numerals or binary, writing essay answers to test questions in spirals, etc.)

College wasn’t so bad because most of my classes had very little homework, it was mainly lecture and test. Or problem-solving project, since I majored in computer science (identify problem, work out a solution for it, figure out implementation of said solution).

In the “real world” though, I struggled my first few years in the work force. I never had to learn to motivate myself since A’s and B’s came so easily to me in school. And I was used to getting by with minimal effort but above-average results; which doesn’t translate well from school to career.

I really feel like it was almost more of a curse than a blessing to be a “gifted child”.

I was a gifted kid. I am now in medical school. I am white beyond belief.

I am impossibly amused. I am considered gifted, though I must admit it drives my parents crazy because I do get bored. And refuse to do my homework. And I get some of the highest test scores in my school. So it drives my teachers crazy, too. Thankfully I make up for it with my creativity, so they always have proof that I’m “gifted”. It’s hysterical how accurate this actually is. And then it scares me because now I know exactly what to expect from myself as I get older.

I guess I should have specified why it infuriates my teachers: I don’t listen in class. I don’t read the book. I don’t do the homework. So how do I know the stuff? I already knew it. Years ago. So they can’t even claim they’re responsible for what I know. That really screws with them, which, I confess, is EXACTLY what I want.

From one “gifted” kid to another my least favorite word is “potential”. I agree with the boredom issue and may I add that creativity quickly leads to creative ways of making trouble.

I was put into the gifted program as a 2nd grader, and it was great until high school when the gifted were put into this class called global which is an AP level English/social studies class as a freshman, and then put into world as sophomores which is the same thing basically, but harder, and now my GPA is horrible because I wasn’t properly prepared to succeed in those classes and I’m suffering and wondering if any college worth going to will accept me. yayyy gifted program.

That is SO true yet SO annoying. Literally I never met anyone -especially women- in my life that did not have a “gifted” kid. Based on this fact, I can tell I will have gifted kids some day and brag about their ability to speak multiple languages and talent at Arts etc for ever… It will be my payback time for years of listening to their “cute” stories.

So true. When I was a kid, there was none of this ‘everyone’s a winner!’ crap. At Field Day, there was first, second, and third place. If you came in fourth, you got nothing. And it was good for kids! That kid that came in fourth would be determined to do better next time, instead of encouraging him to remain lazy.

What does it do to kids when you say they’re all gifted? It says they’ll get the same amount of praise if they don’t put any effort into anything.

i had always been told how gifted i was by my doting parents but didn’t make the ‘gifted’ cut when i tested in junior high. nothing was ever said and it was almost like it was unspeakable. i was then very insecure about my intelligence for many years. now that i have some perspective it makes me angry that my parents’ insecurities were so easily transferred to me. i’ve lived in japan (haha! i’m so white…) for a while and it’s interesting to note how unimportant being ’smart’ is in this culture of self-deprecation and modesty. japanese parents just say how ’stupid’ their child is and keep any pride they may have hidden away.

I grew up in the ’80s, when being “gifted” meant you would grow up to afford more cocaine than any other white kid.

I remember when the yuppy shit was moving in my neighborhood – these assholes would only send their kids to ding dong school in Harlem (of all places) or the Upper West Side bc they had “gifted” programs. These kids also ate the sand from the sandbox (yeah, no shit bc I saw them doing it).

Yuppy dickheads love bragging how their kids are gifted – every one of these kids is a fucking genius being raised by 2 assholes for parents.

Growing up smart will make kids lazy. My BF and I were one of those smart kids. Both our parents were poor working class people and used to be poor farmers. They didn’t care about “gifted” or accelerated programs.

In grade school, I remember not working on my homework because I knew I will get the 100% on tests. I only worked enough to pass – because I was lazy. I would get the highest score even without a calculator.

If I finished the quizes first, my teacher would make me grade my classmates quizes. I also used that opportunity to get extra candy from kids that failed the test. A snickers bar would get a C.

I was a slick little girl.

I hated school because some teachers did not appreciate young mouthy slackers. So when I was 11, I decided to study to skip a grade – and I went through 7th and 8th grade in one year.

My BF started reading at 2 and also became a lazy kid. He met President Clinton as an award for getting the highest scores in all standardized exams from 1st-8th grade. He graduated high school with 2.5 GPA but perfect SAT scores.

My BF slept all the time in class. In our Physics 4 class, the professor asked a difficult question and nobody raised their hands. The professor called on my sleeping BF, and he gave the correct answer.

Everyone in our class were stunned that this guy knew the answer in his sleep. Our college buddies and professor still talk about that incident. Lucky b*stard slept through most of his classes and still graduated with honors.

My sister was the hard working average student. I remember she would study until 2AM. She even worked hard on those stupid Kaplan PSAT and SAT review classes. The poor girl was angry that the my score was still 200 points higher.

My sister became decent hardworking adult, working up to 70 hours a week. She will probably become an executive in her mid-30s. I am always proud of her accomplishments. She did it all by just by working hard and sacrifice.

If I had a choice between having a smart/gifted kid or hardworking average kid, I would rather have hardworking kid. All kids should be taught to study hard, work hard and be decent people.

The obsession with “gifted” kids is a waste of money.

yeah, the other parents were crying in the hallways back in Kindergarten when their kids did’t make it into G/T. Unfortunately, 3 out of 4 of the G/T teachers have STUNK. We homeschooled our gifted kid, who mostly read all the time & still got the highest SAT score in the state. With the Internet, bright kids can self-educate once they learn to read (which happens pretty early with truly G/T kids, with IQs over140.

Oh, and I agree with Accipiter, when I was in school they gave awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. I am sick and tired of people sugar coating lazy, slow, or stupid. Are you fat, stupid, or lazy? Don’t feel bad, its not your fault. Yes, it is your fault and please feel bad about it. Maybe you could work on bettering yourself. if you don’t want to better yourself you don’t have to, just don’t bitch because you are mediocre.

As much as white people don’t want to admit it, white people do have stupid kids, very very stupid, fat, and lazy kids. But white people we are not alone so don’t feel too bad.

Maybe that is why there is so little support for the arts in high school because white people every were would have to face the fact that their child is actually not all that talented. I was never in the gifted program in high school and had never thought I was all that “gifted” until I got to college and then I found out I have a natural talent for art and design. So I don’t have much respect for high schools or their “gifted” programs, seeing as they only focus on one side of the brain.

I think this started when all the REAL gifted kids who couldn’t get anywhere because they were treated like normal kids, and then people took it way too far and now we’re at the opposite end of the spectrum. I’d say the other end is where we need to be. People like me who are actually ‘gifted’ and get stuck with the ‘normals’ will just have to tough it out, like I did until middle school. Unless they’re really fucked, in which case they’ll need to be one of the ’special’ kids or some shit.

My overall IQ is 135 and I am an active member of MENSA, I am 17, yet in school my GPA is 1.35 and have a total of 11.5 credits (I’m supposed to be a Junior), for me it all comes down to one thing, the fact that public schools are formatted to the way that normal kids learn and pass off the gifted kids to the special ed. department.

wow…….r u all gifted? bcause only like a few percent of the world iz supposed 2 b…..don’t know if i’m gifted but i’m azien which should totalllly count anyway like there’s a no child left behind program which is soooooo unfair for those “gifted” cause now theyre are grouped with “special ppl” since there is no funding i mean like no one has donated and all those special test to determine your iq and stuff only holds back those who don’t do so well and doesn’t advance those who get a 99 (perfect score) say if you are in elemtry on the Standerized tests cause that means you scored above 99 percent of all other peeps anyway
