#20 Being an expert on YOUR culture

White people are pretty conflicted about their culture. On one hand, they are proud of the art, literature, and film produced by white culture. But at the same time, they are very ashamed of all the bad things in white culture: the KKK, colonialism, slavery, Jim Crow laws, feudalism, and the treatment of native americans.
One way they can make up for it is becoming marginally acquainted with foreign cultures. It is generally acceptable for a white person to learn a few terms in a language spoken primary by non-whites (such as Chinese, Tagalog or Portuguese). They can then use these phrases to order certain ‘more authentic’ dishes in restaurants.
White people can also take passing interest in film, politics, music or art from these countries. When they actually meet someone from that country, or at least who has parents from that country they cannot wait to engage you in all the details that they have learned.
“Have you heard the new Andy Lau CD? It’s awesome!”
It is imperative that you recognize how special and unique this white person is for knowing about your culture. Acceptable responses include “Wow, I’ve never seen a white person order chicken feet,” or “How did you find about that film? I didn’t think they had dubbed it yet.”
These responses will fill white people with that self satisfaction they need. Also, they consider a reminder that they are not racist, which also makes them feel terrific.

I’m always wanting to tell people to stay away from my genetics and thinking they know about the who and what I am. Especially for those of us who are multiracial, it’s way too easy for others to assume we culturally a fit into one box, when we have many.

Ah the refreshing smell of open racial dialogue. People make generalities across the board about their own races and others (last time I checked, this blog was run by White people). It gets really offensive though, because it seems like White people want to own everything, or at least co-op it. Remember when Jennifer Lopez first blew up, and people (the White ones, anyway) were acting like she was the first person with a healthy butt and hips that was ever born? They were AMAZED. She was the ‘safest’ choice, I guess. Of color, but not THAT color, you know?
Actually, I was even wrong, it’s 53.7% white people in Brazil!

I did giggle a little at the one black guy at the judas priest concert i attended. i also applauded that he wasn’t afraid to admit he liked them. it’s hard for anyone to admit that they like or ever liked Judas Priest.

1) Oh that’s such a beautiful name. I’m a guy pls don’t call my name beautiful.

4) Do you ever see any lions and zebras. This is the dumbest thing ever. Only time I’ve ever seen such animals is at the zoo – In SAN FRANCISCO.
5) Some white ppl are so dumb they’ll argue with me. “But I saw on the discovery channel this show with lions in Africa.” Do you ever seen ppl living next to lions bitch.

I completely agree! American culture only knows how to think in stereotypes. America is so segregated the only way americans know anything about other cultures is through stupid sources like tv or something, instead of actually getting to know people and their culture. It’s very offensive for someone who to be pretentious enough to say they know more about your culture than you and to correct you on it. No one should try to tell you who you are or put your in a stupid box.
Ok, how is asking where you are from and asking if you have seen those animals telling you about your culture. Those are QUESTIONS hence, not informing you.
When you lived in Nigeria, did you know about the native species in each part of the United States?
I doubt it. I have been out of the county many times and when I have been abroad people have asked me questions that are just as absurd, but I understand that there is no reason they would know that because they have never lived where I live.

people are really going off on tangents in this post. This entry is about how some white people like to be apart of other people’s cultures [which is fine to a certain extent], but not only do they study it but they think they fully understand and try to school people who are actually from the culture about their very own culture.
Now obviously as we know not every white person is guilty of doing this, but I have encountered it on numerous occasions, especially when my family and I decide to go to an Indian restaurant for some Indian food instead of cooking it at home, give ourselves a break from the kitchen. I always over hear some white people schooling their friends at the on all the foods and how it’s cooked and blah blah blah. Majority of the time they are wrong, not only that they end up eating w/ a fork and knife. Seriously? Eating Indian food w/ a fork and knife is ridiculous, there is a sink in the bathroom, wash your hands and eat w/ your hands people…no one will look at you funny at an indian restaurant if you eat w/ your hands I can assure you that. This also reminds me when I was invited to dinner by my friends family to an indian restaurant and the mom was acting like she was telling me things I didn’t know already. “hey this is how they make na’an and this is how they make roti…do you know about blah blah blah”..ugh I just wanted to throw up listening to her ramble on and on about shit I knew about before the age of 5.
I don’t mind when people educate themselves about other cultures through actually talking to people of the culture…but…nothing i hate more than hearing someone say:
“I read in a book” or “in class my prof. said…” or trying to explain things to people of that culture who obviously already know everything about their own culture.
Or how about white people that automatically assume this is what you are. I can’t tell you how many times I go to a club or whatever that is majority white and some white girls alway feel the need to push up on me and my girls and get us to teach them how to dance lol! Bitch back off! Or, “Is that your hair? Can I touch it?” Or “Whats up girlfriend! What it be like!” Why the hell are you speaking to me like I have no intelligence?? And no I don’t wear weave. Never have! LOL! And I remember when I was a kid when baby got back came out, white girls would always ask me if they got a butt for a white girl. I don’t know!! White beauty is much different then black beauty and everything else! But no honey your a typical white girl. Suffering from the assatall desease. No ass at all! lol! No offense to other people but this is true.
by the way before this gets misunderstood..which tends to happen quickly here…i am not referring to ALL white people…just some I have personally encountered.
