#20 Being an expert on YOUR culture
January 23, 2008 by clander
White people are pretty conflicted about their culture. On one hand, they are proud of the art, literature, and film produced by white culture. But at the same time, they are very ashamed of all the bad things in white culture: the KKK, colonialism, slavery, Jim Crow laws, feudalism, and the treatment of native americans.
One way they can make up for it is becoming marginally acquainted with foreign cultures. It is generally acceptable for a white person to learn a few terms in a language spoken primary by non-whites (such as Chinese, Tagalog or Portuguese). They can then use these phrases to order certain ‘more authentic’ dishes in restaurants.
White people can also take passing interest in film, politics, music or art from these countries. When they actually meet someone from that country, or at least who has parents from that country they cannot wait to engage you in all the details that they have learned.
“Have you heard the new Andy Lau CD? It’s awesome!”
It is imperative that you recognize how special and unique this white person is for knowing about your culture. Acceptable responses include “Wow, I’ve never seen a white person order chicken feet,” or “How did you find about that film? I didn’t think they had dubbed it yet.”
These responses will fill white people with that self satisfaction they need. Also, they consider a reminder that they are not racist, which also makes them feel terrific.

“It is generally acceptable for a white person to learn a few terms in a language spoken primary by non-whites (such as Chinese, Tagalog or Portuguese)”
Americans always make mistakes when talking about europe. Portuguese is a white language.
Yes, Portuguese is a European language but spoken in several African countries as well as Brazil. Portugal aside, quite a few non-whites speak it. Spanish is also a European language btw…I speak it and I sure as hell am not white.
O___O
It’s true. I never realized it before, but I guess I do have an extreme interest in other cultures.
Of course, I do like to travel…….
I lost count of the number of people who, when finding out my ancestry, say they truly feel or they have been told by a psychic/medium that they a) were a native american in a previous life or b) say they would like to ‘come back as’ a native american, because they believe that is their destiny. To shut them up I tell them native americans dont believe in reincarnation.
Also you should add that life on many Indian reservations is soooo great, esp. these are wealthy white folk who love to imitate a pre-modern life before the arrival of Europeans. Most likely, a Native American is a member of a Christian church and nearly half of them vote Republican. I do know in Cal. the Cherokees (informally known as “Okies”) are stereotyped as hating black people, immigrants and Jews. But if a white person approaches you and claim to know all this stuff about Indians, such as “they drink alot and smoke peyote, then runs around with a coyote” is definitely racist.
Portuguese is the language of Portugal, which is an european country that in the 16th century discovered the american continent ( the south american, Brazil ), and it is a country existing since the 12th century. The south american countries took the portuguese language or spanish when they were colonized. So I don´t think it is very accurate to refer to it as a non-white language – it is not knowing what you are talking about, and thinking white folks are all americans who descend from british folks or so. Obrigada
Word usage is very important when making a point…
“The south american countries took the portuguese language or spanish when they were colonized.”
“took” is incorrect “forced upon” sound about right… along with Catholicism…
Portugese and other Europeans DID NOT “discover” the Americas, the indigenous Americans have ALWAYS been here and have a long history beginning around 40,000 b.c.
Unless you are speaking of the Solutreans from Europe, who did inhabit America that long ago, this is a false statement. The Amerindians originated in Siberia and made their way eventually to America, but that didn’t happen 42kya. That being said, Amerindians are genetically and phenotypically distinct from modern East Asians even though they share ancestors.
And the Europeans did “discover” it in the sense that they made its presence known to the wider world by way of exploration, as there was no global knowledge of geography until their arrival.
im glad they dont do that for my culture. lol thats probably because they would have to do cheap labor.
haha this is hilarious. You forgot to mention that white people DON’T like it when they realize their lack of knowledge thereof. I had more than dozen personal experiences when conversation would start between me and a white person and they wouldn’t have any idea how to connect with me because they know nothing about my culture. Therefore awkward silence.
Repeat Mongolia is not East Asia, it is Cental Asia and no, we do not eat Mongolian beef there. So, stop trying to act smart by making references to ethnic cuisines.
Haha, I am from Kazakhstan, so also central Asia, and they all thought it is part of Russia. But I guess Kazakhs are lucky that our country is not turned into an American restaurant name (I remember seeing Mongolian Barbecue a lot there).
Do you get the question if your country is still part of the Soviet Union? They asked that a lot to me…
I got awkward silence a lot too, except the people who heard about Kazakhstan from the movie Borat and had lots of false assumptions… do not know which one is worse. Why not just ask some question, if they do not know??
hahaha, yeah, i don’t think white people would want to pick tomatoes for 16 hours for $4 an hour to show their acceptance of Mexicans in the U.S.A.
HAHA I saw this site on http://www.DanielDickey.com and think it’s DEF just a funny!!

I daresay that in one fell swoop I have fixed racism.
I daresay…..NOT!
Yes I did!!!!!!!!
You’re just saying that cause you’re white.
I did say NOT because I am white.
You people. jeez.

Sorry, that’s how I get through life. At work, in school and with other people. More of a Californian thing, if I wasn’t in the state of Cal. I wouldn’t be required to, then I’m one of those autistic nerds or something tries to get by in life. I’m a product of my own environment, middle-class people get down on their luck and have to face reality. I share this guy’s sarcastic sense of humor on how he perceives the world through a “white man’s” comical point of view. +
See autism boy, I can dig up alot more on your dumb ass if you continue with this race shit that you started.
Test me bitch.
YOINK!
this is hilarious and so true.
Its so funny to see white people come in to the restaurant i waitress at and pretend they know whats good to their white friends and order things they think is authentic, while briefing them on the culture of asians. They talk about how they’ve been ti thailand, or china, or japan, or watever and dont know shit. its so sad.
