Duh, is anyone supposed to be proud of both good and bad parts of their culture?

This is most obnoxious part about being white. But its important to understand that this “expertise” is based on white peoples own self-hatred.

White people are so ignorant of history they actually believe that they’re the only people in history ever to have “oppressed” other people. They are also totally convinced that no people have ever “oppressed” white people.

The invasions and untold slaughters into Europe by the Mongols, Moors, Arabs, Turks, Huns, and other assorted Asian or North African peoples is one big blank of history. Even more comical is the idea that places like “the New World” were like great big Grateful Dead concerts before Europeans arrived. Never mind the Aztecs wiping out the Incas or sacrificing over 20,000 babies so the sun would rise in the morning, white people don’t want to hear it.

Don’t tell a white person that the Arab slave trade consumed 10 times more black Africans compared to their own slave trade as the white will explain that the Arabs treated their slaves much better. And NEVER bring up the fact to a white person that the Muslims also enslaved an untold number of white slaves out of Europe during the “Dark Ages.”

This is a form of White supremacism that is very misunderstood. Its basically telling the world “well, we expect you to slaughter, invade, colonize people but we’re white, so its very bad if we do it and not so much if you do.” Its basically telling the world that their a bunch of animals, who of course act like animals but only whites should be held accountable because they’re white (Read: Human).

The reason whites become “experts” in other cultures is to suppress the hate they feel towards their own feelings of superiority. It sounds confusing but its kind of like letting your little niece win in checkers to make her feel good and afterwords feeling bad about it. A white person must never show any positive feelings towards anything accomplished by a white person but must always point out that when a non-white accomplishes something that they were the “first” fill-in-the-blank to do so. At the same time, if a white person accomplishes something its for “humanity” or for “mankind.” To you non-whites reading this, I know this must sound confusing as hell but we’re a very strange people.

Don’t forget “being an expert on your religion”. I especially love it when someone who takes a ten-week history course on something other than European history brings it up in almost every applicable conversation.

My favorite meal is fried chicken and watermelon. I would much rather have this than the best tenderloin.

Yellow people are about as racist as whites, and unlike in the white countries, there aren’t many minority groups in their countries to tell them they shouldn’t be that way.

Look at China, Korea, and Japan. Koreans allow natives of English-speaking countries to come to Korea and teach English. You should note, however, that they don’t allow South Africans, Jamaicans, Zimbabweans, etc. Hmmm….

After making the above mistake, it bothered me so much I went and talked to a MesoAmerican anthropologist at my school about the Aztecs. It turns out that children were only about 20% of sacrifices made by the Aztecs.

For the reconsecration of the great pyramid of Tenochtitlan, there was an estimated 84,000 sacrifices over four days.

Also, the sacrifices were not for the sun to shine, they were for rain. It was also pointed out that Mixtecs weren’t totally wiped out by the Aztecs.

But here’s the best part!!!!!

After the MesoAmerican anthropologist told me this, she then went on to say “but this was nothing compared to the death the Spanish inflicted on them.”

I couldn’t contain my laughter at that point, as she confirmed my point. To white people, the only bad killing is done by white people. If non-white people kill in large numbers, this is to be expected because their non-humans. However, white people can never be forgiven for killing since we’re human.

This is why we should never fear making mistakes. As mistakes can lead to a greater understanding later. Had I never made the mistake in the first place, I would have never visited the anthropologist. And if I never visited her, I wouldn’t have been able to confirm the above idea.

Why do we have call blacks African American but no one would ever consider calling whites europen americans? Most blacks have been in this contenent longer then most whites. And if a white even stands up for himself after being discriminated against he or she is deemed the racist. And really what have you had to ‘fight for’, was it the general trend for most of the world’s society to automatically place you at a higher level in the social caste system worldwide? Perhaps it’s how most of the wealth in the world is in the hands of a only a few-predominantly white- men? Could it also be how subconsciously in most ’1rst world societies’ whiteness is deemed with goodness whereas blackness or ‘non-whiteness’ is deemed to be inferior (see the numerous tests done on this.)

You must not have studied much history. When human groups interact or share a peice of territory or compete for resources, the result is always more or less predictably the same. It has nothing to do with the specifics of white people. The specificity with which you call attention to these examples illustrates that you have this blind spot, whereas ever since we have records human groups have been doing this to one another.

I love this. I am pretty white, culturally (marathon running while listening to David Sedaris…), but my mom is Central American and I have been bullied by WHITE people for not really being Hispanic because I don’t do the things they learned about on their mission trips to save the people I am claiming to be “my people.” I got some scholarships from Latin-American groups and my white friends got so pissed at me because in their minds being Latino means you have to have smudges of dirt on your face, a worn plastic rosery in your hand, and no ability to pronounce a J sound. Its so fucked up, but …really bold of them.

Thank you for this blog! It is equal parts funny, sarcastic and TRUE! I have alot of white friends who are cool primarily for the fact that they recognize and embrace the things that make them white instead of hating themselves for it. I haven’t read the whole blog but you must include the way white people really make a point of calling any Black person, no matter where they were born, “African-American” instead of Black. All the white people I know who have lightened up (no pun intended) used to do this around me, until I made it a point to call them Irish- American, Armenian- American, etc.

I can honestly say that I fail to suffer from white guilt. I think it’s mostly because both sides of my family (the gypsy/black side and the polish/irish side) got to the USA party a good thirty years after slavery was abolished. That being said, I know I didn’t do anything. The only African-American History class I ever took was because I dropped some speech class and needed to replace it with something else.

And sure, I was the only white person there, but we were all there to bullshit everything. I didn’t feel guilty, even when we were talking about the parts when my ancestors would have been chilling. Human nature is kind of all about stabbing, enslaving, blowing up or otherwise harming people different from them. Whites are far from the only people who do this.

People from Brazil are Brazilian. The majority of them are from mixed Portuguese and native American descent. People from Portugal are pretty white. Maybe a shade darker then most other Europeans.

It must be said, i think this post applies almost exclusively to white Americans.

Being British – this has been something i have noted of Americans. In Britain i think it’s less self loathing, more of a melancholy feeling – given our past, the nature of nation now and our language.

Dont mistake me for being a patriot (thats something very American aswell), but i would argue that the UK has a very interesting cultural landscape – and not a whole lot to be ashamed of to be honest. (Though we are sometimes infuriated by our own past).

Clearly, i don’t speak for the nation as a whole – but thats always been one of the differences i saw between the two nations. Heart the US btw

haha..yes, this is true. when I was in 7th grade, I went on a school field trip to an african museum. It was ran by White people and one of the guides there asked me what was my African ancestry. The conversation was getting really interesting and meaty when this hipster white chick totally interrupts to tell him “how much she loves India!” and then spent the next 20 minutes describing her love of all things Indian, totally random, inane stuff. Of course they have. It is such condescension that I’ve come to expect on such debates…casually dusting the issue under the rug seems to always be the case-especially when confronted with the woefully ugly reality of colonialism. You cannot sidestep the fact that through colonialism people of color were undoubtedly treated as minorities in their own countries; minorities in the terms as second class citizens when they clearly outnumbered their white masters.

I am not denying that human nature causes many to display supercilious attitudes towards a minority group, but this point is totally irrelevant to the issue. It overlooks the pangs of colonialism…but let me ask you, why are the poorer nations that were subject to colonialism amongst the poorest in the world today? Why are people on non-white color amongst the poorest in the world today? Why is it that subconciously white is always denoted as ‘good’ whereas black or non-whiteness is deemed as bad? About as White as it gets…what kind of bizarre alternate universe are you living in? You pose to be so elevated in your thinking that you “give” people of color agency in brutality against one another, yet you sound no different than other ignorant whites who minimize white oppression by saying “we’re all racist.” Only whites talk about “giving” people of color agency in their oppression which simultaneously reduces white involvement in it and gives them the warm feeling that comes with patronizing another race by trumping them up. And with that they say things like “there are two sides to apartheid” “Africans sold Africans into slavery too” “even some Native Americans killed other Native Americans,” etc. This excuses whites of their involvement in the oppression of people of color. It’s pretty transparent however and easily refutable with FACTS:

Fact 1: The exact number of blacks who were killed in the Atlantic Slave Trade is not precise and ranges from 3-10 million lives…so when you say “10 times as many blacks were killed in the Arab slave trade” which figure are you referring to? 30 million or 100 million?…because I completely doubt either. You would have either bested every slave scholar in the world by knowing more than them tor you just pulled some stat out of your ass thinking we would blindly accept your slightly elevated “we’re all racist” theorizing.

Fact 2: Europeans introduced chattel slavery, the system of slavery used in the Atlantic Slave Trade, to the world. First the Greeks, later the Europeans involved in the Atlantic Slave Trade. Meaning, despite whatever slavery in which other ethnic groups were involved, it was European slavery that categorized other human beings as sub-human property without any contractual rights.

Fact 3: I would like to know which whites feel that asserting facts about European colonialism is somehow an expression of White supremacy? I wonder if it’s only you and a small percentage of whites who take this asinine perception of European history.

Fact 4: Again this blog refers to do-good liberal whites, not whites in general (meaning most). What most whites gave us about blackness and other ethnicities has come in the form of scientific racism and media stereotyping. It’s generally people of color who talk about the accomplishments of people of color, not whites.

Fact 5: Did you not attend public school? The vast majority of what is in high school textbooks focuses on the accomplishments of whites, and they not only show their pride in their white history by engulfing themselves in their history, but they stuff it down the throats of black, yellow, and brown children!

Fact 5: Your reverse psychology BS has failed miserably. Study up a little more and then you might convince a few people to agree with your backwards logic. Scurry along with your postmodernist, humanist, “we’re all really African” color-blind friends.

Firstly, whites don’t have it easy everywhere. That’s a big myth. Just look at the Southern United States (and rural America in general), and former Eastern Bloc countries. Anglo English and Jewish (I consider many to be white, especially European ones) seem to be the richest white groups, across the world and especially in the States.

Are whites bigger? Well, yes, except for some Africans, they tend to be the tallest, and only Japanese Sumos and Polynesians tend to outweigh us. I don’t know what it has to do with prosperity, but hey — you asked.

Smarter? Average, not really (northeast Asians, south Asians and Middle-Easterners have similar IQ averages), but whites do have a high “genius” factor. Newton, Franklin, Edison, Einstein, and all the inventors can’t be overlooked. These don’t make the whole white race smarter, but having them around tends to make for more technologically advanced societies. All a group really needs is a larger top end of the bell curve. Since the numbers of geniuses needed are so small, any slight difference in genetics makes a huge difference in tech. advancement.

Actually harsher environments are better for advancement, as they give a group more motivation to make their living environment confortable.

Another key factor is difference in languages. Indo-European languages are pretty similar across the board, and heaviliy using old Latin and Greek in scientific language helps the group optimize its numbers and thrive.

And since you mentioned it, yes I do believe in some form of providence (I’m religious), but I think the European race is quickly losing favor in this age. The West is on it’s way down if something isn’t done to reverse the trend. East Asia, South Asia and the Middle East is on the rise in world. They may take western countries’ place in a few decades.

BTW, I do study other cultures besides white, but most of all I love the culture of my ancestors. American about 300 years back, and then back to Europe in Sweden, Scotland, Germany, and other countries. There really isn’t a “European culture”, just there like there isn’t a “African”, “Native American”, “Asian” or “Polynesian” culture. Heck, America itself has at least 10 distinguisable cultural regions.

They are related cultures, yes, but they have plenty of individual characteristics that make them unique.

Also, I don’t buy into white guilt. Anyone that says we have a “heartless”, or “cruel” culture would do well to look at the imperfections and downright flaws in their own cultures. Stuff like human sacrifice, slavery (whites didn’t invent it, sorry), wars, violent dictators, and other great stuff. Yeah whites have had the same stuff pop up from time to time. No one group is perfect. I’ll take white culture because it is what produced me. I’m not proud of everything, but it’s not like I’m going to bail and pretend to “join” an equally flawded cultural system.

I agree with this post. Of course there is a part of the white population that takes undeserved pride in their scant knowledge of other cultures/people/religions/whatever. This is totally obnoxious, but I’m not going to say I haven’t done it. But isn’t that better than just associating with people who think and act exactly like you?

On a strictly person-to-person level, if I meet a random foreigner who brings up Justin Timberlake or Celine Dion or whatever to show that (s)he is familiar with my culture, I can react with scorn and say “Oh, you’re just trying to prove how cool you are, loser,” or I can take it as a sincere attempt to be friendly and find common ground. I am white & proud and I am not ashamed of historical activities such as Jim Crow laws, the KKK, colonialism or slavery. In fact I believe African Americans owe use white people a debt overall because while impoverished compared to white people, they are far better off than their left behind African cousins by and large.

But black people repay white people with disproportionate crime rates, STD infection rates, and overall consumption of public resources (instead of contribution).

White people don’t have it easy, but they do have it pretentious =)

Heres one, white people like…Creating and developing a productive civilisation and society that tries to better the standard of living amongst its participants. Bag it out all you like, but white people have been pretty farking good at developing their culture (and yes this goes beyond america!)….rome wasnt built in a day, but it sure is a lot fucking better then downtown lagos, Nigeria.

Maybe the authors of some of these blogs might want to go and work in some areas of India, the Middle East, China, Africa and Sth America to get a good appreciation of how productive non-white people can be. They could discover the wonders of the ‘cast’ systems in India, or the use of ‘labour’ in Saudi (not to mention gender equality) by the arabs, or perhaps they might want to view how wonderfully the native inhabitants of Nigeria deal with corruption and disease…Perhaps you could even visit central Australia and see how tribal law is initiated. im sure we all agree that as white culture is soooo fucked up that it would be crazy to stay inside of the very walls of this society and reap its benefits – why would you not want to move back to Africa, China, India or wherever the fuck white culture doesnt exist….

Non-whites are just as racist as whites. This blog is a prime example of that.

From stories stemming from “the bible” (white man’s stolen religion) to the Crusades, the Inquisitions, Slavery, the British occupation in Africa, Hitler (let’s not forget, if Hitler was an immigrant, he’d be seen as a white person), whites have been trying to basically own the world, or sculpt the world into something that they can control.

CONTROL! That’s what white people can say is their culture! Trying to control everything that the eye can see! White people LOVE control! Feeling Superior to everything and everyone!

The insidious thing about films like Dances With Wolves and Farewell to the King, is that the seem to be about white people who turn their backs on their culture…but they are actually about white people marginallizing others and telling “their” story through the eyes of a white person…something I call the Tarzan Factor…In the process oversimplifying, over romanticizing and ultimately misunderstanding others.

This might be true for some white people. It might also be true that some white people care about the pain of animals and don’t want to eat them. They ultimately just don’t want to hurt animals and don’t give a damn about anyone else’s superiority complexes.

Not all white people haven’t bought into the “everything I do is to feel superior to others” motivation that seems to be popular here.

Three suggestions for “Captain Cook”

1. Learn the rules of your own language (i.e. capitalization, punctuation, etc.) before you rant on the internet about how fantastic your race is. You’re an embarrassment for many reasons, one of which is your poor grammar.

2. Follow your own advice and live in some of the areas you recommend to others. Perhaps that will cure you of your cultural ignorance.

3. Relax and learn how to understand comedy.

A book that everyone on the planet should read is _Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fates of Human Society_ by Jared Diamond. It answers your question and explains how it was due to accidents of geography, and not racial superiority, that resulted in western europe developing technology first. It’s extremely good but it didn’t address the phenomenon of how a single idea can transform a society. For example, the spread of Christianity & the Protestant Reformation with it’s emphasis on mass-literacy and the novel idea (at the time) that we’re all equal (before God and by extension the law).

If you like that one you’d also like _The Wealth and Poverty of Nations_ by David S. Landes.

I’m white and I don’t think that I feel any “white guilt” or self-loathing. As other people here have pointed out every group has screwed over some other group at some time or another in it’s history. My group has screwed over some other groups but we also invented damn near everything worth having (and liberated half the planet and apologized to the various groups that we screwed over).

I mean, I’m grateful to the chinese for inventing pasta, paper, porcelain and the compass but if you like air-conditioning, electricity, plumbing; democracy and the rule-of-law; the steam engine, the internal combustion engine, the industrial revolution; radio, television, movies and the internet…etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. (another 1,000 etceteras)…frozen pizza…then find a white male and give him a big hug.

I struggle with the question “Am I prejudiced?” Prior to going into the Army at the age of 17 in 1976 I had scarcely encountered any minorites. In the Army I encountered, and went to war with, the _finest_ men that our nation is capable of producing–black, white and brown. (I also encountered a great many sociopathic degenerates–black, white and brown).

I love this blog — especially “Bikes”– I too have a fantasy of living in a small French village, riding a bike, buying bread, cheese and wine and putting it in my bike-basket, and cooking dinner for my friends.

I think that this conversation is fascinating, because I sometimes feel awkward when discussing others’ cultures with them. Interestingly, no one has every discussed “my” culture with me — most of the immigrants with whom I interact in public assume certain things about me because I’m American and rarely discuss it. Most are delighted when I ask questions about their culture.

I also think this conversation is fascinating because the categories we use — “white,” “black,” “culture,”– are relatively recent categories in the history of human thought. (Thanks, Carolus Linneus) Is racism different from the more traditional xenophobia? Is it more destructive to hate and fear other people because of the color of their skin than to hate and fear them because they come from the country that has a traditional, age-old rivalry with your country? I’m not sure. I think it makes as much sense to hate and fear people because their skin is “black” as to feel proud of their accomplishments because their skin is “white.”

Would “geographically advantaged” be a better category to describe a group of people? Seems silly to me, but it might make more sense, cf. Jared Diamond. Am I “geographically advantaged” because I was born in America in the 20th century?

Portuguese are white.
That nation fits in the Southern European category of white people which encompasses Italians, French, Spanish, Belgians and Romanians.

The Portugese were not regarded as “white” in the US until they petitioned the US government in the 80s.

Historically-speaking, the term “mulatto” refers to the offspring from a Portugese and a Spaniard. It was believed that the Portugese were an inferior race and that the offspring would be sterile like a mule, hence the term mulatto (mule-ish).

The term was transplanted to the US and, as true as any other Americanism, was redefined and divorced from its original meaning.

We also speak portuguese.
As far as I know, the term mulatto means different things in different cultures. I am not familiar with the definition stated in the previous post.

This blog is screamingly funny. My Latino half (Venezuelan father) is laughing its a** off, and so is my white half (Scots-Irish mother), albeit more self-consciously. This reminds me that the comment I used to hear most often when mentioning my Venezuelan background was, “Oh, Venezuelan women must be some of the most beautiful around, because your country always does so well in beauty contests.” (Yes, it’s a positive stereotype, so I guess I shouldn’t gripe, but the truth is that Venezuela, like Texas and a couple other US states, is obsessed with beauty contests and knows how to game the system.)

I think the author should have taken into account that every single culture has participated in slavery, and most of them have had worse laws than the Jim Crow laws mentioned.

Interesting fact- black people in Africa took white people (slavs, hence the germanic word “slave”) as slaves far before the American thing happened. He also forgets to mention that a good deal of white people didn’t agree with slavery.

Sucks, but all cultures do it/have done it. In all reality, American slavery was less rough than slavery in other cultures.

White American culture is, in reality, just a mixture of all the different European groups that immigrated here and has evolved (or devolved, depending on what aspect we’re looking at) into a separate thing. Whoever says we don’t have a culture obviously doesn’t know the meaning of culture. Even a mixture of other cultures is a culture.

These experiences give so many a way to stock-up their cultural capital with arrogant and paternalistic stories and comments about life in the Third World or a former Soviet satellite that make their class privilege (derived, at least partially, through skin privilege) seem benign and even a positive thing. Major pet peeve with this entry. I’ve encountered many white people who swear that they know more about any given culture just based on the reasoning that they vacationed in a foreign country, watched a few foreign films or just live in a soon to be gentrified neighborhood. They’ll claim to be experts on food quality and authenticity. Also, why do white people think it’s so cool to be able to tolerate so much heat in food? They all want to eat Thai food, and when visiting Thai restaurants, they’ll order their food “Thai hot”. When they don’t like a particular restaurant, they’ll claim that they would have preferred the food to be spicier. This cracks me up all the time. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that they were deprived as kids by eating only meatloaf, pork chops and applesauce, Stove Stop Stuffing, Kraft grilled cheese sandwiches and the like.

White people also love to get Chinese or Japanese kanji as tattoos especially if they are unable to speak or read either language. But they are quick to point out that the symbol permanently etched into their skin means “love” or “strength” or “dragon” when it could just as easily say “stupid white person” and they would never know.

There is nothing more racist than white people talking about white culture in a favorable light among white people. White culture or “whiteness” is to be defined by angry Marxist diversity people who hate white people.

I’ve been reading this blog but have not been able to recover from Aztec domination of the Incas. Since when did the Mexicans take over South America? This is just a small minority of white americans. Europeans didnt have KKK and Jim Crow. For one thing it is believed we are all related. A second thing is that slavery is ubiquitous. White people have been slaves and still are. So basically you mean immediate ancestry and American whites.

I’m surprised that Stuff White People Like #20 – “knowing everyone else’s culture” has caused such anger by readers. Apparently, this is a sensitive point for white people.

Do they get mad when people tell them that they don’t know everything about everything?

For example, I wonder how “Bob” (quoted above) knows that being african-american in the US has been a blessing. Has he been to Africa? Does he know how life is affected when ancestors were slaves?

I’m not saying he’s wrong, I’m just saying that I’m black and I don’t know if Africa would have been worse for me. I lived thru Jim Crow, but I’m not sure if I’d thank anyone for giving me that opportunity. It wasn’t fun.

I’m half Portuguese, and I grew up in Southeastern New England where there are a lot of people of Portuguese descent. Portuguese identify as white Europeans.

Skin shades can vary, but I know some Italians that are darker skinned than some Portuguese. If someone has a Portuguese last name, but they’re on the darker side I tend to assume they’re Brazillian or Cape Verdean.

I’m a pale girl, so I pass as non-Portuguese to most people, yet if I tell a liberal or leftie white male that I’m half Portuguese, I somehow gain exotic cred and seem more like date material because there’s nothing a white, male leftie likes more as a fashion accessory than a “person of color” girlfriend.

Looks like the posts veered off into a discussion on history and politics. Well, getting back to the original blog posting, I do seem to find a trend in many white American trying desperately hard to assimilate themselves into other cultures. Where as you don’t see too many other cultures doing that. I’m not going to get into the reasons why, the statistics, etc. All I’m saying is that despite the overall attitude that “white” is not a culture or that America has not been around long enough to warrant a celebration of its culture, I, even as an Chinese immigrant, find many wonderful and uniquely American things that I enjoy.

I read things like I dont have white guilt, okay, and then bringing up slavery from other nations, okay, again if it aint true why are you all so worked up over it? It’s a damn joke! What exactly is white culture? Many americans feel that they have no culture because we are simply a melting pot. That is why many of us take an interest in other cultures. Has nothing to do with white guilt. I’m not saying white guilt doesn’t exist, it’s just not applicable to this scenario. Good effort though. Not really.

Don’t forget that white people also love to embrace a non-white culture, i.e. Native American, Latin American, African, etc., and the white people who want to sound especially educated will embrace a specific country or tribe. Not only does this make them look worldly and educated, but also makes them believe that they are not racist.

Sometimes I don’t think people understand what “racism” means. Racism literally means “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race (M-W.com).” Think about that for a little while.

Also: Did you know that Persians are considered to be aryans? Persians and Germans are the only true aryans, according to my Persian friend’s German friend.

Finally: Are Semites considered to be white or non-white? All I’m saying is that I’m of Arab/Mizrahi (Palestinian Jewish – I bet you didn’t know they made them in that flavor) descent, and here in the States I’m just another white girl. On the other hand, my Egyptian-American friend, also of Arab descent, is considered to be non-white here in the United States. So I’m functionally white, my Egyptian friend is non-white, and we’re both Semites, so what does that make my Jewish friend of Eastern European descent? One more thing: I want to know what Black people think when “antiracist” white people infiltrate Black student union meetings on campus. Does it piss them off? As a white person, I often feel void of any culture. This is not to say that white culture doesn’t exist because certainly there are cultural traits, practices and beliefs that are specific to whites. Nonetheless, I feel I have few cultural practices and distinct cultural traits in comparison to my nonwhite friends. In response to the initial article, I think that there are advantages and disadvantages with “becoming marginally acquainted with foreign cultures.” I am a strong advocate for learning about other cultures so to broaden one’s own worldview. However, I think that an attempt to do so can be abused. A common example is white people who listen to rap / hip-hop music who then claim that they are not racist because they are comfortable with music that is commonly associated with blacks, or they may use their taste in music to justify their belief that they understand the black struggle. In all likelihood, these people are unaware of the history and the progression of rap / hip-hop music, nor of its importance and relevance in black history. This is comparable to the “Well I know a black person, so I can’t be racist” argument. I think it is overwhelmingly easy to use others’ cultures to self-reason or justify one’s innate beliefs.
Again, I am not arguing that it is wrong to acquaint oneself with other cultures. On the contrary, I think it important especially in countries as diverse as America. At the same time, I do think that this process can prove to be patronizing at times. There are many times when I have walked into a Mexican restaurant only to overhear a white person slaughter the Spanish language in an attempt to sound “more authentic.” Certainly, this up to personal interpretation, but I do not perceive this to be valid attempt at understanding and accepting other cultures. If I were the waiter or waitress at the Mexican restaurant, assuming I am of Mexican descent, I would likely perceive a customer’s botched attempt toward authentic conversation as an insult. It is no surprise that we are all different, and perhaps this difference should merely be embraced. I think it’s important to find the delicate balance between embracing these differences, understanding other cultures and accepting them without doing so in a demeaning manor.

Although it is true that whites have tended to be more INTERESTED in other cultures (and made them the subject of study, which is perhaps the origin of this particular attribute), I have found WAY MORE non-white people think they are experts on so-called “white culture”, as if all whites were exactly alike and all arrived here from England on the Mayflower.

I’ve known blacks, asians, latinos, and others, who seem to think they have a great understanding of whites simply because they went to school with us, or saw some “Friends” episode. They think all whites are English (even though most of us are NOT “Anglo” as Latinos always call us) and they think all whites have no culture or come from the same, rich upbringing.

Being from the South, I’ve cracked up at blacks who assure me that grits, chicken, black-eyed peas and ice tea are “soul food” (instead of them being the food my ancestors ate and thus is the reason so many blacks, particularly from the South, eat).

We can’t dance (some of the best ballroom dancers, including Salsa(!) are white), or sing, or aren’t musical (Beatles to Stones) or athletic (MMA/UFC) or whatever…based on some concept of some stereotype of some bohemian white kid from the Hamptons or San Francisco.

And the funniest thing about minorities generalizing and being ‘experts’ on whites, is how they are so certain, and I really don’t know, because they’ve lived in this “white” country and they know better ! LOL

Most people we call whitepeople, whitegirl, or white boy are mostly midclass subarban to upperclass white people who think they are supreme because of their heritage. The fact is, 200, 300, 1000 years ago, the ancestors of most Americans – Irish, Jewish, Black, German, Italian, Mexican, even English – were desparately poor, probably oppressed, and their life wasn’t very dear to anyone who held power in a meaningful way. This is true whether they were scraped up a living as peasants in Europe, artisans in the Middle East, or fishermen in Africa. This is also true of 99.9999% of all the people who have ever lived. Even non-landowning White Protestant English Males had to fight their way up from indentured servitude; it’s not salient to the current discussion.

Most of us aren’t too bad off if we can take the time to read this stuff and think of a response. If that applies to you, just be grateful your ancestors dealt with the worst of it, whatever it was.

One thing I would like to add on about the original post is that only whites can be praised for being an expert in someone else’s culture.

I am a first generation non-white migrant who has successfully managed to integrate into North American Society. At least I think so. Well, anyway at least some people would think so too in that many assume I was born here. Ok, so maybe I wasn’t that old when I moved – far easier for me to assimilate than my parents.

Still, the point stands – it took some effort to fully integrate and embrace being a Canadian whilst still maintaining my Asian roots. Also, by comparison – and I’m tooting my horn here – the diction, speech, and speaking habits of other migrants who are of the same age as I am, and moved here at the same time I did, are different. Their accents, far thicker. Their grasp of the common vernacular, incomplete. Or maybe on the flipside, they’re completely whitewashed and have no recollection of their childhood – or at least they claim not to even though they may have moved here later in their childhood than I did.

In short: It takes me a great deal of effort maintaining two cultures. Being true to my roots, yet loyal to my adopted country takes real work, and sometimes even a bit of contradiction.

Still, sometimes I think it’s all pointless.

That I can shift from straight, classical Tagalog (with a regional lilt) to Canadian English without much effort is not as big a deal as some white guy who quotes Japanese phrases he picked up from jerking off to anime porn.

being white is so watered down in the sense of cultural and historical referential dynamics, both on a socio-economic, and historionics interpretative level that it still amazes me that americans are so caught up in the aspects of racism. Especially when they are the only nation yet left that legally condones and legislates hatred as a human right.

It is best to look at the history of nations and their inceptions before making generic commentaries about hispanics, blacks, asians or any other visibly non-white racial stereotype. Since in fact, most of those stereotypes have been forced and created by the “white” aspect of colonization and the inevitable fear driven management of minorities – in the continental United States – as to be almost negligible as stereotypical indicators.

Lets take a look at the simplistic realities.
Most of the original settlers were tossed out of europe. As in they weren’t even wanted within their originating countries, with the options of the noose or the “new world” which of course, was not an option. I mean really… if you’re offered death or a slow boat out of here cuz you are crowding our prisons, what would you pick?

North American history – especially american history – has been so convoluted and falsely represented – that it amazes me that america can be patriotic in any dynamic.

The creation of the nation wasn’t because a few farmers beat a trained and battle hardened England, but because England was just finishing up 18 years of war and debt, and were currently in conflict with France, under the republic created by Napoleon and quite simply said, ‘screw it, we aren’t that interested in the criminals we tossed over to the new world anyway, so since they are in arrears of what they owe us and it costs us too much to maintain em, fine, cut them loose.”

Which is what really happened. That was proven in 1812 when the egotistical little farmers south of the border tried to “invade” the british colonies, now known as Canada. This woman was not Tibetan, nor did she speak Tibetan. She didn’t even look Tibetan- Tibetans, though relatively dark, are clearly East Asian, and this woman was obviously South Asian. And of course they were grossly mispronouncing it. I was tempted to do a few extra prostrations just so I could slam my forehead into the ground.

Yeah, Portuguese is originally spoken in Portugal, whose population are mostly white; in Brazil people are mostly white (more than 50% are so), though it’s true there’s also African countries where the language is spoken. With so many languages to choose from why pick one to which the post doesn’t apply.

All of a sudden after playing GTA: Vice City, watching Scarface, and going to a beach in Miami…mr. “gringo” is an expert on cuba, cigars, and the women.

You know what gets me…when I tell white folks I’m Filipino, but once they find out I was born in the US it looses authenticity to them. It’s no longer exciting.

Get over it. Just because you lost your sense of culture by being born white American doesn’t mean I lost mine. I’m still brown, still Filipino.

Culture, what culture? White Americans don’t really have any culture that I can find. That’s why other cultures are so interesting. I trace my roots back to Germany, Sweden, and Holland to have some sort of cultural identity.

While Stuff White People Like contributes on a massive scale to our invisibilization (really, it’s like the hipster flipside of Sarah Palin), I’m introducing a new blog called Bitter White Folks for Obama to explode this zero-sum game. My family were part of the 41 million who migrated from the Appalachian/Southern region to the Midwestern states in the postwar period: precisely the demographic from which support for Obama (and progressive politics as such) is supposed to be non-existent. But it was the economic policies of Reagan and the Clinton and Bush dynasties that produced such atrocities as the 2,200 square miles of strip-mining in Appalachia that have put thousands out of work, reduced the average income to the level of Mexico and forced migration to the North in search of jobs. So I actually completely agree with Obama’s sentiment: of course Appalachian and Midwestern communities are “bitter” – and it cannot be denied that more than a few have been mislead into believing that these elites somehow hear their voices. With the increasingly patronizing tone of the Republicans however (which Stuff White People Like only solidifies), many are rapidly becoming unconvinced – at least Obama speaks about the situation as it really is: as he put it in that same speech, “you can go into the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you’ll find Obama enthusiasts. I’m a white girl that grew up in the Philippines. so when i talk to Filipinos about their culture it’s more for a sense of nostalgia. but I have met a lot of white people who act this way. and its freaking hilarious!

Well I’m white girl born in America and I don’t obsess over everyone else’s culture. Wanna know why? No other culture tries to learn about my heritage. So why should I learn about yours? But at the same time, they are very ashamed of all the bad things in white culture: the KKK, colonialism, slavery, Jim Crow laws, feudalism, and the treatment of native americans.

While the articles are funny, some of the comments are brutal. But I noticed people countering each other thusly:

“I hate it when white people can’t say my name right.”

“When white people try to say my name, they just look stupid and I tell them to use an easier nickname.”

So which is it? Try to say a name, or don’t? Learn about a culture or not? Once you get outside of the US, it helps to know about the culture you’re diving into. Also, what’s wrong with learning for learning’s sake?

It just seems like knowing nothing about your culture will get me ridiculed, and taking an interest in your culture will get me ridiculed. What’s the right answer?

I am a white Buddhist American who is often conflicted as to what my culture is. It is pretty clear what my religion is, but here in America it is hard to “talk” about your culture, because I really don’t have a set of customs that are different from the customs in my religion. Therefore it is quite common to see me dress in salwar’s, sarees and traditional robes for religious events and events of my Hindu peers. I look awkward if I don’t. I’m the only white person in my temple and I dress according to what I deem is appropriate for the setting. A lot of my friends are Hindu so if they invite me to a religions function, I believe it is completely inappropriate to wear a pant suit or a revealing dress especially when I am in India. Plus Salwars are so much prettier and more comfortable than American dresses. Heck, maybe I was born into the wrong race? But so be it, it’s fun and i’m proud of who I am! I wouldn’t say I’m an expert on any one culture but my own , although I am going to school for Asian studies, history and early childhood education, hah weird mix much? I guess that is another thing white people love, majoring in strange things.

I believe many people are not in full understanding of the differences between CULTURE and SUB-CULTURE.
We are all born into a CULTURE that in most cases (should be) nurtured, grown, and explained to us by our family… Like I was born into an Irish – Roman Catholic, Democratic family with a set of rules, regulations, and believe…
As I grew up and made friends I (like us all) picked up on their differences (their Cultural ways) but being strong and loyal to my Cultural ways I continued to be ME, but of course I did pick up the best ways of my friends (their cultural ways) to make it my way… thus creating my Subculture.
Today I am a proud “Whiteman” with my white cultural ways and rely on my Subcultural ways to understand and mix with many nationalities world wide. My subcultural way in which I live has me being a Irish, Bretheran religion, Republican who is married to a Thai-American (over 19 years) Godfather to a “Chamarro-Korean-American” that attends an International College of every race and Culture you could imagine (that are actively practicing their cultural ways).
I still voice my American Pride, I still stand behind my country (right or wrong, good times and bad)… Just as I did in Saipan. I was a proud Supporter and Voter to former Governor Babauta! Which gives me rights to voice my oppinion as see fit (never needed to however).
Here in Thailand I know, see, and interact with the people as well… been related (through marriage) to this country 19 years. I never felt the need to become Buddhist (the temples are cool looking no doubt).
We are all pretty much the same Saipan at a much smaller scale and of course you cannot hide on an island and of course you will get caught eventually… Thailand and America is so much bigger therefore it takes a bit longer to see the problems and what nots…
Buddhist people are just as bad a Christian people… they are live her like me – learn the language – listen and watch! They hide it better than most…
I traveled and lived throughout the world – moreso as an American soldier…

I did this way too much, pretending to be Native American, even though i never met my Indian ancestor. i constantly found ways to market myself as a non-white, non-american, but after a while it seemed pointless. sure i might have ancestors that are Cherokee, Scottish, Slovenian, and what not, but that doesn’t make me one of them. you need culture, not genes.

I made the mistake of attempting to explain to a White Person how my culture views women… who then proceeded to tell me that I WAS WRONG, and went on to tell me that I was not an expert. Oh really? Because what would I possibly know about my own childhood? Or my own culture?
But the greater question is this… was this a moment of failure for the White Person, or a moment of triumph?

I don’t really care about the Negroes too much. I do feel some sort of sadness for the Native Americans though. That was some seriously sick shit they pulled on em. Regardless who you are you can’t deny that fact.

This is so fucking true. I’m Asian and I live with a white person who’s always telling me how my culture and religion actually is like, and who MY ancestors and heritage are. HELLO, I don’t need YOU to tell me about my culture and religion, and I know my own heritage and ancestors thank you very much.

“White” people just love knowing stuff. The more they know the smarter they feel. They also want to know what others don’t which has led too many items on this list. Indie, vintage, and obscure appear again and again in these posts. So this leads them to learn about foreign cultures and spew all the facts they know to their friends and anyone who even has a slight resemblance to the a person from said culture.
