#25 David Sedaris
January 26, 2008 by clander
For many of you, this post will be a confusing as you wonder who exactly this David Sedaris is. He is a humorist who writes for the New Yorker and has seveal books including Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice.
His stuff is kind of funny, but white people go crazy and will pay hundreds of dollars to hear him read from his own book. Let me say that again, they will pay money to see someone read from a book they have already read. They know the jokes are coming, they know the punch lines, but they feel the need to hear the author actually say it.
White people universally love David Sedaris. So if they ever ask you “who are you favorite authors?” you should always reply “David Sedaris.” They will instantly launch into a story about how much they love his work, and the conversation will go from there, and you don’t have to talk about books any more.
It is also safer than saying Jonathan Franzen, Dave Eggers, or Shakespeare. White people are very divided on these authors and might actually ask you questions about why you like them. Stick with David Sedaris, you can’t lose! If they do you press you, just say “I read a lot, and I never laugh out loud from a writer, but Sedaris is just brilliant.”
This advice will make white people respect you, trust you and more willing to invite to you parties.

[...] for its riffs on clichéd white people favorites like expensive sandwiches, unpaid internships and David Sedaris. Lander will be signing books and drinking micro-brewed beers at the appropriately ironic Euclid [...]
Guilty! I do love me some Davis Sedaris. _Barrel Fever_ had a few non-fiction essays which were fine, good first works, but the fiction (most of that book) was downright bad in comparison to his essays. I wouldn’t even read through it. Likewise the fiction in _Holidays on Ice_. But _Naked_ was fantastic, as were his 3 other collections exclusively of essays.
White after all. Is “White Shame” one of the things white people like?
Further to last remark: OK, turns out I HAVE heard of him, as I see he’s author of “When You are Engulfed in Flames” which was discussed on radio sometime in last six months. That much I do recall.
Speaking as a human (white, as if that matters), must say not a fan of Chris Farley at all. Strong dislike of that sort of “humour” — I mean, how many people could there be that are fans of him, really?
Don’t know Sedaris’ work, never heard of him before now, but as I love to laugh aloud while reading, shall certainly be investigating his pieces soon. Thanks for tip.
I think the wry exaggeration used to poke fun at Sedaris fans may be lost on some of you. Yes, it is true that many of his fans are enthusiastic almost to the point of gushing. However, the kind of talent Sedaris brings to the page is something so rarely seen that it sparks a sense of awe. Anyone who has spent even a modicum of time in a bookstore and failed to notice his works would be deemed quite obtuse in my opinion. I find it difficult to believe that some have never heard of David Sedaris considering his work and critiques of his work are ubiquitous. Bookstores, popular magazines, radio interviews, television, the internet and newspapers are just some of the places where his writing has been highlighted or discussed. I am white, I am well-read and I am a proud, giddy Sedaris fan! Who else can take a mundane story such as a family trip to the beach and turn it into a treasured nugget of comic gold!
David who??
I just finished reading his most recent book, “When you are engulfed in flames”. No one I’ve read can make me burst into laughter. While it’s very very embarrassing to be caught laughing out loud in the subway, It is one of the best experiences ever!
Those of you who are bitching about not knowing Sedaris, if you live in New York and have never heard of him, YOU’RE PROBABLY LIVING UNDER A ROCK…i wouldn’t trust your judgment on what white people like.
true, white folks love him. but anyone who enjoys brilliant writing should love him, he is hysterical!
who the fuck is this!?
I had the same question, and I’m as white as you get.
Besides, the New Yorker is for liberal pusswads.
can you recommend a magazine for conservative pusswads? thanks.
who’s sedaris? whoever wrote this must not even actually know any white people. how about chris farley? what white person doesn’t like him? i think someone should do some more research on this subject before writing a huge blog on it.
I don’t like Chris Farley and I’m white… but I do love Sedaris:P
you white people who don’t get this site are obviously the “wrong kind” of white people.
