#26 Manhattan (now Brooklyn too!)

Often times if you ask a white person about where to travel, you will get a lot of responses. But if you ask them about New York, white people will go nuts. They love the city universally and all either live there, have lived there, will live there or want to live there.
White people like New York because it has artists, restaurants, a subway, history, diversity, plays, and other white people. It literally has everything white people need to thrive! The only thing it’s missing is nature, but Central Park is right there, and since you are walking all the time, you are outside!
If you are from New York, tell this to a white person. They will instantly be interested in you “what part of New York? and you are really from there?” When they inevitably tell you about your home town (“I know this great italian place…”) you should respond by saying “man, I thought place was only known to New Yorkers.”
Another secret fact about white people, if you are in group setting and the topic of New York City comes up, find the highest ranking white person and say “oh, are you from New York?”
To them, this means you are calling them cultured, cool, and urban. They will respond with something like “oh, well, I’ve spent a lot of time there,” or “I lived there for three years.” You will have instantly become more popular than all other people in the group.

I was born in Queens and lived in Brooklyn years ago and have lived in the DC area for over 20 years. Now I even start to get a touch of southern drawl if I don’t talk to family enough(if I actually hear a southern accent from myself I call my mother for a 4 hour call immediately!)…
But holy crap, as Denis Leary once said – “the fact that you’re from NY is like a badge of honor, it impresses the shit out of everybody!”. Personally I don’t know what the big deal is, but yes, the food is better there. Not sure if everything else is worth triple the price though.
I was born and raised in Manhattan. I really dislike the “blanding” and white washing of the city by all these bland whites from kansas city or seattle or some other place that suites them better. when they move in with their tatoos and bald heads and fedoras , all of a sudden everything gets white , the food is bland and whole foods follows quickly. Give me the REAL New York, the New York that they are scared to go to … give me Queens and the Bronx… they have already contaminated Brookyln
I’ve been to New York and Seattle (Not Kansas City… WHY?) and Seattle is def not whiter. It does have a lot more homeless though, it seems.
I am disgusted that hipster scum with their blue ribbon beer and their constant calls to their rich parents demanding instant funds deposited are claiming the city.
They are the new hippies with less to get involved with.
Forget brooklyn (at least wburg…well no they are freakin everywhere now) I’ll take Miami any day of the week.
Miami, hah! Now THAT”S culture
Another brilliant post. I live in Manhattan, so I have nothing to add to this…

This is off point, but what about Tokyo? I only ask because I feel America has no modern cities, in the sense of evolving. Essentially I mean the public transportation systems that seem decrepit. Why are we proud of shit trains? I wish we could have vision again and have the desire the best rail system the world has ever seen. Unfortunately, I think we’re a century behind Europe and parts of Asia, and won’t ever be able to catch up.
most of the subways in europe (that ive used at least) arent much better than in new york. granted, i only briefly visited new york when looking at colleges and lived in europe for 6 years when i was growing up so i dont have equal experience with the two..but from what ive seen there isnt a whole lot of difference. i do agree that some of asias public transportation is better though, i went to highschool in thailand and the bts skytrain there (like a subway but above the street) is freakishly clean. but to be honest i prefered the subway in new york to the ones in tokyo. they’re actually less crowded in new york
a century behind europe? hardly. you think the subways are shitty in new york city? try navigating the public transportation in budapest or prague. london may have nyc beat (and i’m sure residents of tokyo are already utilizing hovercraft technology by now they’re so advanced), but from my experience few metros are as “progressive” as the one in the big apple. it may be small, but the ratio of city size to rail size seems pretty damn accurate to me.
London’s subway system is the worst I’ve ever used (I lived there). Yes, it’s clean, but that’s where the advantages end. It is overpriced, slow, runs infrequently, stops around midnight, and those morons “require” a foot of personal space during rush hour, meaning that two or three trains may pass before you can actually get on one. Give me NYC’s system any day!
Did you study abroad there? Because according to #72, hooray! now you can say you lived there!
I agree with hoolsa, London’s is better with the exception of the fact you pointed out that it stops too early at night. Also, when it breaks down they take a lot more time fixing it.
But London still trumps New York in all the other areas people are supposed to like NYC…
“artists, restaurants, a subway, history, diversity, plays, and other white people.”
And if you really want to get technical, the REAL NY is the state anyway.
First off, I’m NY born and raised. I only go to Manhattan when I absolutely have to. I think the people who live in the city are the worst because it’s like going to Disney World. There are so many people who are insecure and they try to act tough. People in the other four boroughs are so much cooler. I’d rather live in the Bronx any day than Manhattan!
[...] 10. Live in Brooklyn, if only for a bit. Just to see what all the fuss is about, and so I can say things like, “man, last night I ate dinner at this kick-ass restaurant in Park Slope…” God, I am such a white person parody. [...]
I’m from Washington, D.C. and well a lot of white people have never really lived here. But they’re trying to move back in and our Mayor Andrian Fenty is making tit possible for them. Shutting down schools, moving black people out into Maryland. It’s just insane and asinine. I’m a young black lady who lives in Washington, D.C. and I really dislike New York.
I’m a young white lady who lives in DC and I hate it too! I am so white.
Does the kind of Stuff White People Like include things like
Truth, Equality, and Justice?
