#26 Manhattan (now Brooklyn too!)

Often times if you ask a white person about where to travel, you will get a lot of responses. But if you ask them about New York, white people will go nuts. They love the city universally and all either live there, have lived there, will live there or want to live there.
White people like New York because it has artists, restaurants, a subway, history, diversity, plays, and other white people. It literally has everything white people need to thrive! The only thing it’s missing is nature, but Central Park is right there, and since you are walking all the time, you are outside!
If you are from New York, tell this to a white person. They will instantly be interested in you “what part of New York? and you are really from there?” When they inevitably tell you about your home town (“I know this great italian place…”) you should respond by saying “man, I thought place was only known to New Yorkers.”
Another secret fact about white people, if you are in group setting and the topic of New York City comes up, find the highest ranking white person and say “oh, are you from New York?”
To them, this means you are calling them cultured, cool, and urban. They will respond with something like “oh, well, I’ve spent a lot of time there,” or “I lived there for three years.” You will have instantly become more popular than all other people in the group.

As a Puerto Rican, I find myself in an odd middle ground in the race debate. I really have no side to pick, but I do believe this site is a total ride on the lol-ler coaster. Keep up the good work!

But most NY’s (myself not included) are really snobish about where they live. Get over it. I live here because i can walk down the street, holding my peurto rican boyfriends hand (i’m white and gay) and nobody cares…that’s why i love this city
New York is the center of the universe right now. Of course folks like it, want to go there, etc. This guy thinks he’s creative when stating the obvious. But I have to agree with you: Yet another falsehood perpetuated by the media and non-whites is that all whites are descended from slave owners. My family didn’t even get here until 30+ years after the American civil war ended! White people didn’t enslave blacks. The leadership in Africa sold their own people into slavery. Whites were just their best customers. Hey look! Supply and Demand! Where have we seen that before? Besides, the Jews were slaves, too. Why do people insist on acting as if blacks are the ONLY RACE IN RECORDED HISTORY to have been enslaved? Its just mind boggling…
Please just have some common sense here. Most people in this country did not own slaves. That is only a small part of it. For over a century after slavery ended black people lived in an openly racist society, complete with laws that segregated them and treated them differently than the rest of us. White people continue to do better economically because of this legacy. Its nothing you should feel guilty about – this is just the march of history. Like you said, people have been conquered and enslaved all throughout history.
Its funny – you say New York is the center of the universe, but I’m from the Midwest and I know basic US History and you don’t.
This is so true. I hate to admit it, but for some reason people ask me all the time if I’m from New York (I’m not) and for some sick twisted reason I feel super flattered and superior.

As a White Person in “flyover country,” I can tell you that most educated white people in the Midwest consider New Yorkers to be completely obnoxious, self-important, and f-ing ridiculous to pay so much just to live in walking distance of lots of ethnic food. In reality, most of these people have no real experience with diversity. Working in an auto factory with people from many different backgrounds is diversity. Going to an Asian Fusion restaurant with your white friends is not.

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve been to NY several times and it is a great city. I love it. Its just annoying when the people who live their automatically think they are somehow more culturally advanced and sneer at all the Midwestern people, as if we are all gun-toting hicks.

It’s laughable how ignorant many New Yorkers are. They firmly believe there is nothing between New York and LA. Sorry friends, there is civilization out there. Crazy idea, I know. Worse than people actually from Manhattan are the people from the suburbs. They get the most idiotically defensive about “the city.”
It’s not that white people love Manhattan. It’s that White New Yorkers love Manhattan. So, so much.
Who’s sneering?
The “New Yorkers” who you perceive to be obnoxious and self-important are not New Yorkers at all. Most of the time, they are folks from the Midwest who migrate to New York to become fabulous and fantastic.
They use our glorified art deco business district as their playground for obtaining life/professional and social/cultural experience so that when they head home for the holidays, they can discuss their accolades with hometown friends, one up their siblings, and make Ma and Pa proud.
I agree with you-these folks are indeed obnoxious. They absolutely think they understand diversity (because they have the token black friend of course… followed by the token gay friend). I TOO think it’s absurd that these people pay copious amounts of money to live in proximity to the latest organic food joint.
So, what you can do for all of us real New Yorkers is tell your buddies from the Midwest to stay there: tell them to stop driving up the rent and giving us locals a bad rep.
Don’t judge. Not all of us are designer hand bag-toting socialites like you see on E News, and reruns of Sex and the City . Most of us grew up everyday neighborhood kids who enjoy Italian ices, sitting on the porch, Shea Stadium, fireworks on the Fourth O July, and throwing stale bagel remnants at the pigeons.
As for the “gun-toting” thing, guess what…I have a gun too. The only difference is that I keep it for protection, not to hunt game and make venison chili.

the city is in fact better than anything thats out there. No one can tell me london is better. No one can tell me shanghai is better. And certainly no one can tell me the mid west is better.
I see people from the mid west (at least i think they are because they’re just fat and ugly)all the time wearing their blue jeans and sneakers with a baseball hat on. They look awful walking down 5th ave with their fat kids and grand parents. Its hard not to laugh at them when I walk out of my office and all they do is look up to the empire state building and walk into a pole.
I beg to differ that most people don’t have any experience in diversity. There is no way you can tell me that you have more “diversity” in the midwest. Thats just laughable.

… I went to NYC to see the Statue of Liberty and Central Park with my uncle, and they were pretty sweet, but the hot dog carts around there didn’t have any good bratwurst like I am used to, haha. I didn’t walk into any light poles when I was there, and I didn’t even where any jeans. Only jean shorts! and now I have a Rolex to where with them that was only fifteen dollars!! You guys do have some good shoping deals in NYC! Gotta stay fresh to represent the MIDWEST – halla!! I had so much fun in NYC and want to move there someday (there must be good bratwurst somewhere, haha). It really is a great place!
Wow Hot City you are just really incorrect. I hope you are being tounge-in-cheek. Its funny how someone who probably considers himself cosmopolitan can know so little about their own back yard. It just really highlights the holier-than-thou attitudes of people who live in the Northeast.
The Midwest, especially the Rust Belt, has the most diverse middle class in the country. Even the very white flyover, Iowa, took the initiative to nominate Obama.
Gary, IN: 84% Black
Flint, MI: 53% Black
Cleveland: 50% Black
Detroit: 81% Black (Deaborn, a suburb of Detroit, has the largest population of Arabs in the country)
St. Louis: 51% Black
Minneapolis / St. Paul: Huge immigrant population of Hmong, Somalis, and Latinos.
That’s just Black / White diversity. Think about places you probably fly over to get to Japan – like Alaska. Alaska has the highest percentage of Native Americans of any state in the country. Hawaii has more minorities than White people.

Have you ever been to any Midwestern cities like Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis, or St. Louis? I live in Detroit here and I have also been to NY many times. You sound like the kind of white person that loves to talk about diversity, but you would never take the city bus down Holbrook to get to your job at American Axel.
Here’s the thing about New Yorkers. THey love talking about how they are the shit but they have no street smarts whatsoever! Has it occured to you that some people carry guns for personal protection? Not everyone has the privlege of living somewhere where you can feel safe all the time.
What do we do here besides carry guns? Man, you are ignorant, aren’t you. First of all, I bet anything you can do in New York, I can do in Detroit, but for cheaper. We have a very vibrant music scene here, lots of museums, great universities, and lots of lakes if you are into nature. Detroit has a very proud history and a very important place in American history. Perhaps you should see the world Hot City. Not everyone can be like you.

My friend Phil lives in Brooklyn and he said its been overrun by rich hipster kids. He said that the Bronx is going the same way. Its like yeah … NY had a cool arts scene way back when it was cheap for artists to live there. Now its just full of yuppies. I swear I’ve seen some of the worst pretentious horrible art in Chelsea galleries. It doesn’t even compare to the stuff I see around Minneapolis and Saint Paul. There you have real serious artists, not some finger painting trustafarian.
Its funny, you ask a Southern white person and they’ll tell you something like “I’ve been there once, and that was enough for me!!”
