#28 Not Having a TV

The number one reason why white people like not having a TV is so that they can tell you that they don’t have a TV.

On those lonely nights when white people wish they could be watching American Idol, Lost, or Grey’s Anatomy, they comfort themselves by thinking of how when people talk about the show tomorrow they can say “I didn’t see it, I don’t have a TV.  That stuff rots your brain.”

It is effective in making other white people feel bad, and making themselves feel good about their life and life choices.

Though these people often fill their time by talking with other friends who don’t watch TV about how they don’t watch TV, looking at leaves, cooking, reading books about left wing politics, and going to concerts/protests/poetry slams.

Generally this makes them very boring and gives you very little to talk to them about.  It’s important that you NEVER suggest they are making a mistake or that there is a value to owning a TV.  You should just try to steer the conversation to allow them to talk about how they are better than you.

And I thought that not having a TV was a POOR, AND BROKE person’s activity, and not just a white thing??….hmmmmmmm

Hispanics are said to be socioeconomically worse and have 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 12 TV channels in their language (Spanish), including SiTV is a bilingual one & in L.A. we have the “urban bicultural Chicano” channel known as KJ-LA-TV. I recalled the huge news media stories on KMEX-TV channel 34 in Los Angeles, because it was owned by Hispanics and Mexican television companies, aired Spanish language shows like “telenovelas” of white blonde Castillian actors, and TV commercials with “brown faces” like McDonald’s, Budweiser, Wal-mart and Ford motors co. felt they actually had money to burn: FIESTA! (get out the tropical music sound effects). “Todos Los Consumadors Por Disconto”. +

I never watch tv… I just do not like it when a way of life is put in our minds being the right way. I know there is a button and I know there are also good things on tv, but I find it time consuming and movies I can watch on my computer…Well, the thing is, I do not care for random amusement and I really hate “formats” hahaha, just the word in itself makes me feel caged ;-)

I agree. life is too short to sit watching stuff that someone else has spent time designing around their ideas. How much time do we spend listening to real people’s ideas – the people that matter in our lives, not some random people who happen to make TV.

The best incentive to stop you watching TV is just to look at people watching TV – they look immobile and hypnotised. They are PAUSED. Their lives are PAUSED. They are growing older and unfitter by the second.

Can you imagine anyone who has really gone far in life spending hours every day sitting staring at the refined products of uninspiring people’s minds?

And it’s so great to force people to talk about real things that happened to them instead of what they watched on TV. I don’t care what some journo thinks about life – journos are the scum of the earth! Elton John said that, and I agree.

I do have a t.v. but i don’t watch it, two and a half men and american idol just don’t interest me.

I love to sit in front of the t.v for hours . . . I hate american idol, greys anatomy, and the rest of those bullcrap reality shows.I watch what I like .

Brad, you either aren’t white (rednecked whites may count), don’t work (or work part-time in a minimum wage joint) and have no social life (or you’re agoraphobic).

Note I was joking around with you, because the shows you watch are for “trendsetters/coolfinders” in major cities/ urban areas, and the kind with million-dollar condos or kids can actually walk outside without fear of getting shot, molested and introduced to drugs or gang membership.

Most funny is the white people don’t own a TV, because it hurts a child’s innocence and intelligence. For example, 3 year olds can’t watch any TV at all (not Sesame street?)+

You white people need to settle down! This website probably isn’t geared towards you; it’s geared towards the annoying hipster sect of white people. I’m a white person whose view on the world and this list would be much different (my list would include racism, El Caminos, and inappropriate southern accents).

John, you’re white & live where blacks or whites in “racial gang attire” roam, El Caminos driving all broken but still kicking on the roads in front of slow crowded busses, and foul-mouthed deep-southed twang or “ethnic sounding” accents can be overheard. That’s the urban life before the yuppies/waspies came about to “clean it all up”, plus the scene you’re describing includes billboards for tonight’s shows on BET, ION, TBN, Telemundo or Asia-TV channels. +

inappropriate southern accents? lol what?

La TV es el diablo!

A multicultural moment: what language was that Cinti & Aaron hart? Spanish? Italian? Provencal French? Catalan? Portuguese? Romanian? Franglae? or Spanglish? You see, I’M NOT CULTURED. ONLY WHITE ANGLO SAXON AMERICANS whose native language isn’t even Latin, claim to be. +

I have a TV and don’t watch American Idol, Lost, or Grey’s Anatomy. (And I’m white)!

TV offers companionship and the feeling of presence one doesn’t get from reading. It is the culmination of convenient(operative word) entertainment and that’s why people love it.

As a permanently broke student, however, I simply cannot afford to pay for such a thing and I am happier this way. Watching TV has always induced a state of zombie-like inertia and drooling, which has now been replaced by more productive activities such as reading more, playing with my pet more, riding my bike more, talking to my family and friends more, dancing more (just for fun), breathing more.

Last post on this topic: “TV is the drug of choice of the 21st century”. Addictive…mind-altering…and damaging to one’s soul, character, personality or intelligence. Kinda like booze, cigarettes, coffee, antipsychiatric meds, public education & organized religion. “TV is the opiate of the masses” said by the GREAT philosopher Karl Marx who hadn’t lived in the 1950′s when his ideology Communism began to die off. +

again HIPPIES!! i couldnt live without a tv. TV AND WEED the most perfect things. although now i can just watch tv on my computer so i guess i could just get rid of my tv and watch shows on computer and then be like “wtf negro u can steal my tv i dont even need it anymore!”

[...] For example, on a quick glance, I do like: Girls with bangsCoffeeNot having a TV [...]
