#28 Not Having a TV

The number one reason why white people like not having a TV is so that they can tell you that they don’t have a TV.

On those lonely nights when white people wish they could be watching American Idol, Lost, or Grey’s Anatomy, they comfort themselves by thinking of how when people talk about the show tomorrow they can say “I didn’t see it, I don’t have a TV.  That stuff rots your brain.”

It is effective in making other white people feel bad, and making themselves feel good about their life and life choices.

Though these people often fill their time by talking with other friends who don’t watch TV about how they don’t watch TV, looking at leaves, cooking, reading books about left wing politics, and going to concerts/protests/poetry slams.

Generally this makes them very boring and gives you very little to talk to them about.  It’s important that you NEVER suggest they are making a mistake or that there is a value to owning a TV.  You should just try to steer the conversation to allow them to talk about how they are better than you.

That doesnt mean they cant download something and watch it on their computer. Every show on TV can be watched on the network’s website or various other pirate sites. So this just goes to show how pretentious some people can be.

My wife and I are guilty of a variation on this: We don’t have cable. We can often be found discussing how the savings we accrue, by not paying for cable, directly translates into exotic, third world travel (another item on this list).

Now I’m conflicted! Despite our best efforts to be authentic, it’s difficult to not become a competitive and pretentious snob. On the other hand, if I buy a 60″ TV and a cable package, am I not falling into another trap–consumerism?

Perhaps the key to authenticity is to not talk about how authentic you are.

This list is really funny, but it gives me the same sinking feeling I had when I discovered how well I fit into a myers-briggs personality profile.

As a white person who does not own a television, I find that watching the serials on my computer, either rented from netflix or downloaded, to be satisfying enough. And then I can still look at people cluelessly when they talk about tv and say oh, I don’t have a tv. I suspect a lot of white people without a tv have a similar coping mechanism.

lessee…

pay 25-75/month for…
commercials… 20 mins per hour avreage…
shout shows… 3 or more people talking at once… none heard…
reruns… 70 percent programming… seen it…

read… what is cdo, mbs, credit default swaps… who cares? anyone who owns a house or has any retirement savings…

why… 40 percent of your net worh just went to the top 1%… wait ‘tll they open the “bad bank” next week… bank toxic assets… now become YOURS… to pay off the next 30-50 years… while you work 20 years longer than you thought you would…

oh… but the view is so much more… you know… real…

50% of the commercials are informercials for insomniacs at the dead of night. Another 50% are PBS station pledge drives to keep themselves on the air. And the remaining 1% are shows you care to watch…on TiVo if you cared for it. +

Other punctuation exists besides ellipses. Look into it if you want anyone to comprehend whatever it is you’re trying to say.

please….make….some…..sense

I…can’t,…must…get…in-hal-er,…looks…like…i’m…dying…(dead).

I am happy to say that I have a 60″ HD plasma TV with 400 cable channels. People that brag they don’t have a TV are so lame.

The programming is crap. The ads are annoying. I threw mine out 10 years ago, and never looked back. And my life is busy, full of friends, rich and fulfilling, thank you.

Getting rid of my TV was one of the best things I ever did. My ex-wife was the catalyst, and I’m still grateful to her.

…and you are exactly the person that the blog is talking about.

It’s the “I don’t have CABLE TV” statement this white girl likes to make.

Agree. I just can’t bring myself to PAY for TV. Then you still have commercials. If I want to pay for advertising, I’ll buy a T-shirt.

I do get a warm, fuzzy feeling of superiority when I say I lack cable.

I don’t think most people in my yoga class have cable either.

yeah me too. i rock the rabbit ears. i’m hoping the digital tv switchover turns out like the millennium…a load of crap.

Maybe it’s the not white half of me talking, but a prerequisite to my well-being is a TV. Aside from the huge amounts of video games I play and DVDs I watch, I just love channel surfing, seeing different programs, etc. Unfortunately, I no longer live in the US, and the programming here in Jordan doesn’t quite stand up to what I can see back home. When I go back, though, probably one of the first things I do is flip on the television, and it rarely goes off.

I am looking forward to saying this after February 19th!
