#28 Not Having a TV

The number one reason why white people like not having a TV is so that they can tell you that they don’t have a TV.
On those lonely nights when white people wish they could be watching American Idol, Lost, or Grey’s Anatomy, they comfort themselves by thinking of how when people talk about the show tomorrow they can say “I didn’t see it, I don’t have a TV. That stuff rots your brain.”
It is effective in making other white people feel bad, and making themselves feel good about their life and life choices.
Though these people often fill their time by talking with other friends who don’t watch TV about how they don’t watch TV, looking at leaves, cooking, reading books about left wing politics, and going to concerts/protests/poetry slams.
Generally this makes them very boring and gives you very little to talk to them about. It’s important that you NEVER suggest they are making a mistake or that there is a value to owning a TV. You should just try to steer the conversation to allow them to talk about how they are better than you.

PERSONAL TESTIMONY:
I was at a casual gathering of white (I’m not), middle-aged folks at the invite of a friend, and when I got there I told myself not to judge them. I was doing well until in the FIRST FEW MINUTES of being there, one of them drops the “Well, I don’t have a television in my home” in response to a comment about television.
I was literally stunned, yet prepared, thanks to this website.
I have a t.v. with rabbit ears. I refuse to pay Cable. Mainly THE TAXES. I get PBS, Local News Channel with old reruns and an old movies channel. Plus, I know if i had more channels i wouldn’t get as much done as i do. So, that’s all I need after the web.
Mary, you’re aware of the digital transition has arrived? The rural white folk use to never get TV at all. The Palm Springs area never got a full-power TV station until the late 1960′s. The mountains west of the famous desert resort city known for Hollywood celebrities thought it would be good to get at least 2 TV stations. John Conte, Walter Annenberg, Frank Sinatra & Bob Hope jump-started a NBC station on channel 6/36, and then came a competitor ABC station channel 3/42. Today. we have all the major network affiliates and half of the 20 stations are in Spanish, but based in Indio, Coachella or Imperial valley where most people are Latino. +
Television is for losers. If you watch american idol or other reality, then you are a loser. I have no TV, but I get a lot of grief for it from my friends. They think I am weird…
I don’t have a TV, but that’s just because I don’t want to pay for cable … I don’t think it makes me cool, I swear … plus I can watch South Park online now …
I brag about having a TV, but not watching it…

you don’t need a t.v. these days. i am a college student and don’t own a t.v. because i can watch the shows/movies/ news on my laptop =)….but if i could have a t.v., i would have a big one cause i love t.v. lol
See? no tv…lol.
I don’t own a television because of the fact that I am a poor college student. Besides, I can watch the exact same shows on the computer.

Yeah We have about 6 sets in our house. Have you ever heard of the “Redneck snowman” some fellow poor white people might know what I’m talking about.
Hilarious!!! I embraced my white girl deep and abiding love for television a few years ago during grad school when I got tired of feeling down listening to my professors and fellow students talk about how they don’t have tv’s or don’t watch the tv’s they have. Asserting one’s lack of television to me is a clear signal of someone’s desperate attempt to look smarter than they are. I’m a very smart person, but I wouldn’t miss Project Runway for much of anything.
