#39 Netflix

We all know white people love film festivals, but what about movies that don’t make it to a film festival, or weren’t in the local film festival? How do you get accesss? Thankfully white people have Netflix.
If you don’t know, Netflix sends you DVDs in the mail and you get new ones when you send the old ones back.
White people are absolutely crazy for Netflix for a number of reasons. Firstly, because all of them are convinced that there is a global conspiracy to keep good, independent, groundbreaking film from mainstream distribution (multiplexes, blockbuster, etc).
To them, Netflix (in spite of being a for profit company) is a brand new way for independent filmmakers to find an audience. By subscribing, white people believe that they are changing the film industry, supporting innovation, and contributing to a cultural revolution in film.
If you see a group of white people and you need to break into the conversation, a good thing to say “hey, is anyone else thinking that Netflix shipping is getting slower? I’m doing this PT Anderson thing, and I’m only up to Magnolia! What’s that all about?” They will relate, and talk about their own Netflix queues and how they are trying to get caught up on French New Wave.

The funny part is, Blockbuster Online is better than Netflix. Same movies, same time frame, but I can get twice as many movies because I can go down the street and use my returns as free movie coupons. Then my queued movies are automatically sent to me, so actually it’s faster than Netflix. White people like to use buzzwords so that’s why they choose Netflix. Just like iPods. So many better options, but they like to say they have the one everyone else has.
No, Blockbuster SUCKS…it is only good if you want the same narrow, mainstream CRAP.
However, if you want a documentary or older films, you are basically screwed…unless you have Netflix.
I think the actual Netflix website is better with more features and the streaming library. Plus, I know I would never actually take my movie to the brick and mortar store to return. Of course, if you use that option with Blockbuster, it makes sense to prefer it.

[...] finally this year, I gave in and ordered the film on Netflix (another white thing) and forced myself to watch it. The story is awful (in the archaic sense), awful things happen, [...]
I thought white people like Netflix because they’re lazy and didn’t want to drive to the local chain or independantly-owned video rental store and instead just wanted to ride their Segways to the mailbox and pick up their video rentals.
I don’t have a netflix account, but really, what’s wrong with it? Why would having netflix make you lazy? For a person who watches a lot of movies, it can be a good deal. Simple as that.
Even if you’re NOT white!!
FALSE, real white people support local, independent movie rental places because they like to support local business and brag about it. These rental places are usually owned by extreme film geeks who organize the movies into categories that no one else would ever think of, like “movies about the apartheid,” or “satire from the cold war era.” Sometimes they also provide lists of underrated films that their customers should watch. This gives white people great satisfaction because they get to feel less mainstream than all the other white people.
Not sure if this is why I gravitated toward Netflix. But it’s true that the people I know all love it.

Netflix is way better than getting in your car and driving to the local video store – saves time and money. What’s not to like about Netflix no matter what your ethnicity?
why do all the white people you use on your blog have orange hair?
I tried Netflix before and it worked great. It is delivered to your mailbox within 3 days when you order. I dont use it anymore since i am too busy to watch movie these days.
