#39 Netflix

We all know white people love film festivals, but what about movies that don’t make it to a film festival, or weren’t in the local film festival? How do you get accesss? Thankfully white people have Netflix.

If you don’t know, Netflix sends you DVDs in the mail and you get new ones when you send the old ones back.

White people are absolutely crazy for Netflix for a number of reasons. Firstly, because all of them are convinced that there is a global conspiracy to keep good, independent, groundbreaking film from mainstream distribution (multiplexes, blockbuster, etc).

To them, Netflix (in spite of being a for profit company) is a brand new way for independent filmmakers to find an audience. By subscribing, white people believe that they are changing the film industry, supporting innovation, and contributing to a cultural revolution in film.

If you see a group of white people and you need to break into the conversation, a good thing to say “hey, is anyone else thinking that Netflix shipping is getting slower? I’m doing this PT Anderson thing, and I’m only up to Magnolia! What’s that all about?” They will relate, and talk about their own Netflix queues and how they are trying to get caught up on French New Wave.

Netflix??? OMG…sanity saver as a sahm of 3! How else can I re-cap seasons 1 and 2 of Heroes, while dealing w/ the kids! Its also AFFORDABLE!!!

Dude, NetFlix fucking rules. It kicks any movie stores ass. I can say in all honesty, NetFlix saved, yes, SAVED, my life.

Not really, but I like to think so.

And Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” feature is pretty sweet if you have broadband.

Brandon,

For christ sake, do own stock in Netflex?

Plus, the great thing about Netflix is user reviews and ratings. I get to actually see if the movie is good BEFORE I watch it, so I don’t get duped into seeing crappy films.

Netflix also lets you build lists of your top 10 films in certain genres, like anime. It’s got a wide array of anime episodes and films, too. Video stores just can’t beat that.

I’m a Netflix member, but I could care less about some “cultural revolution.” I like it because it’s a lot easier to see movies than driving down to the fucking Theater or going to a video store. Blockbuster and Hollywood Video are just too overpriced nowadays. $5 a dvd? I pay just $25 a month on a 4-at-a-time plan, and I get about 24-30 DVDs per month!!! Or more

Plus, Netflix has a much wider selection. I got into documentaries that way. Blockbuster’s selection of documentaries and special interest films is bogus. They don’t even have pro wrestling dvds. They used to have a few.

I LOVE Netflix! Mainly because of all of the foreing and indie movies, but also because it’s just awesome.

I actually love Netflix for a different reason…I am a member of a movie store (in Portland…ahem) so stuffed with independent, experimental and foreign movies that there is a search engine located in the front of the store to help you navigate the veritable cinematic labyrinth within (is that great Italian movie in the Foreign-Italian section? or did it win an Academy Award in which case it would be…there? or is it by an “auteur” in which case…). Forget PT Anderson. In this store I could find that movie that PT Anderson’s retarded second cousin put out a few years back produced by George Clooney that got accepted at Sundance because it was by PT Anderson’s retarded cousin and went on to receive a half hour standing ovation. No, I get Netflix so that I can rent “Never Been Kissed” if I’m in the mood and not receive the evil eye from the 90-lb. 6’3″ hipsters that work behind the counter. Michael Vartan is the sexiest high school English teacher ever.

i only get netflix because i am too lazy to drive to the movie rental place i hate film festivals and independent movies so i am white and love netflix but not for the reasons you say haha

I’m white and I LOVE Netflix. Our house has 3 separate accounts, so we have 6-8 movies in rotation at any given time.

Rent from my local store. This is getting dire. I’m just not qualified for cool anymore.
