#39 Netflix

We all know white people love film festivals, but what about movies that don’t make it to a film festival, or weren’t in the local film festival? How do you get accesss? Thankfully white people have Netflix.
If you don’t know, Netflix sends you DVDs in the mail and you get new ones when you send the old ones back.
White people are absolutely crazy for Netflix for a number of reasons. Firstly, because all of them are convinced that there is a global conspiracy to keep good, independent, groundbreaking film from mainstream distribution (multiplexes, blockbuster, etc).
To them, Netflix (in spite of being a for profit company) is a brand new way for independent filmmakers to find an audience. By subscribing, white people believe that they are changing the film industry, supporting innovation, and contributing to a cultural revolution in film.
If you see a group of white people and you need to break into the conversation, a good thing to say “hey, is anyone else thinking that Netflix shipping is getting slower? I’m doing this PT Anderson thing, and I’m only up to Magnolia! What’s that all about?” They will relate, and talk about their own Netflix queues and how they are trying to get caught up on French New Wave.

They does not have ‘Malcolm X’, ‘Boyz ‘n the Hood’, ‘Friday’, ‘Roots’, ‘Glory’, or ‘Blackula’ in their inventory. I really do like Netflix
I have Blockbuster. Does this mean I’m not white enough? I’m off to buy some scarves and bumper stickers before I get my card-carrying whiteness revoked. Praise His name!
Netflix was a godsend when i got tired of trying to rent movies at blockbuster and having to wait in line 20 minutes each time behind some deadbeat loser who was arguing about their late fees, or trying to rent a $3.00 with a bogus check.
they also have a lot of the art-faggy movies that blockbuster dosent have. Now if they would only get a good porn selection.
Netflix? ppfffft…. Blockbuster Total Access is better than Netflix for the price. Where else can you get 3 movies at a time in the mail and the store, and a coupon for another per month for only $19.99? Right now I am clocking in around 25 movies a month. Beat that Netflix!
Guilty. But to be fair they do have the best selection of French Films, and what they don’t have I oder from the internet via Korea. Oops – is that a new catagory?
I think you’re kind of off on this one. I love my netflix because its better than television. I have a television but neither cable no even an antenna, which like people who don’t have a tv, I rub in other people’s faces as I feel it makes me superior. I just watch netflix, but I use it to watch the best shows on television like Arrested Development and the Wire or any other low-rated, cancelled, magnificent show like Freaks and Geeks and Sports Night and Veronica Mars. I get to watch them 10 episodes at a time, for weeks straight. The only bad part is when friends who *snort* actually watch regular tv start talking about episodes of a show I watch which is still running and not yet out on DVD, or when commercials for such a show come on NPR or ‘The Twenty’ at a movie theater. Then I have to plug my ears and go ‘la la la la.’
That’s why netflix owns, indie movies suck.
I think it’s hilarious that white people get offended that a fellow white person would say such a thing. Every post always has a few, “That’s where you are wrong, I am white and I know for a fact I didn’t get NETFLIX for indie films. I got it to watch the Carmen Electra Strip Tease WorkOut Video on my instant que” – Jack
Wow, you are shockingly stupid, attempting to force your way onto the anti-offended people bandwagon and failing horribly. I am in no way offended by any of the blog entries on this site, and I didn’t even come close to claiming to be offended by anything in my post. You are just far too dumb to understand the comic genius of my post which represents what this blog entry should have been about if the author didn’t completely miss the ball.
I am Mexican and I love Netflix. It’s far easier (and cheaper) than driving to Blockbuster and then having to return the movies before there are late fees, plus there is a bigger selection. I don’t even care about Blockbuster’s mail in thing. Netflix just seems better in my opinion.
Really? I like Netflix, not because I like supporting indie films, but because I’m incredibly lazy and can’t be bothered to go to a rental store. I can, however, at least I can make it to my mail box.
That I happened to see Palindromes on Netflix was pure coincidence.
Oh yeah, and don’t see Palindromes. It’s really stupid and has entirely too many scenes of fat people having sex. (blargh!)
Ahhhhh, it is cheap and fast . . . that is why I’m using it.
