We all know white people love film festivals, but what about movies that don’t make it to a film festival, or weren’t in the local film festival? How do you get accesss? Thankfully white people have Netflix.
If you don’t know, Netflix sends you DVDs in the mail and you get new ones when you send the old ones back.
White people are absolutely crazy for Netflix for a number of reasons. Firstly, because all of them are convinced that there is a global conspiracy to keep good, independent, groundbreaking film from mainstream distribution (multiplexes, blockbuster, etc).
To them, Netflix (in spite of being a for profit company) is a brand new way for independent filmmakers to find an audience. By subscribing, white people believe that they are changing the film industry, supporting innovation, and contributing to a cultural revolution in film.
If you see a group of white people and you need to break into the conversation, a good thing to say “hey, is anyone else thinking that Netflix shipping is getting slower? I’m doing this PT Anderson thing, and I’m only up to Magnolia! What’s that all about?” They will relate, and talk about their own Netflix queues and how they are trying to get caught up on French New Wave.

I personally know the son of the creator of Netflix and it is a genius idea period. We at an age where everybody in the world wants results and items in general at the snap of their fingers and Netflix allows this. Its a great idea s dont hate.
1) you still have to wait. blockbuster is faster.
2) he wasnt criticizing netflix. he was criticizing hipsters who use it to gain ‘indie cred’.
Netflix is the very opposite of instant gratification. If anything, I would say Blockbuster Online is better. It’s around the same price and you are actually able to trade in-store whenever you are in the mood for a specific movie.
You have to wait until you return a movie and a new one arrives to watch a movie!!! No thanks.

Netflix is great… but I don’t think I’ve ever rented anything “Indie” or “Obscure”.

How did netflix made the list…it is pretty universal. Black people watch movies too.
Netflix is great not because I love indie films (I don’t and, being from Wisconsin, I’m pretty darn white, but not in the Whole Foods chardonnay set sense of the word chronicled so eloquently on this blog) but because I can get access to all sorts of classic TV shows and old movies (’40s film noir was already mentioned) without buying expensive DVD boxed sets.
IMO Netflix is like having a really kickass DVD library that costs $20/month to store somewhere other than my abode.
Blockbuster is 1 mile away.

so yeah i use netflix simply because its awesome…yeah sure it may seem lazy but i am getting ready to sit on my couch with a bowl of popcorn…who cares how the movie gets here i will gain at least a pound. seriously…why must you call it lazy? plus mail is AWESOME! oh and netflix has the office…another white fav!

You failed to mention another benefit white people love from the Netflix: the chance to catch up on shows white people love that you haven’t been watching. I got started a season late on white people favorites Arrested Development, The Wire and Lost, but was able to jump on the bandwagon thanks to Netflix.
