White people need organic food to survive, and where they purchase this food is as important as what they purchase. In modern white person culture, Whole Foods has replaces churches and cathedrals as the most important and relevant buildings in the community.

There are some regions that do not have Whole Foods, but do have an abundance of white people (college towns), in these situations Whole Foods can be substituted with a local co-op grocery store where you have to pay a membership to shop there.

All of these stores are pretty much the same – lots of vegetables, grain fed free range meat and eggs, and soy everything. They are also characterized by an outrageously large section of vitamins, supplements, and natural oils. There are natural, handmade soaps which give these stores a unique and uniform smell.

Many white people consider shopping at Whole Foods to be a religious experience, allowing them feel good about their consumption. The use of paper bags, biodegradable packaging, and the numerous pamphlets outlining the company’s police on hormones, genetically modified food and energy savings. This is in spite of the fact that Whole Foods is a profit driven-publicly traded corporation that has wisely discovered that making white people feel good about buying stuff is outrageously profitable.

As you walk through Whole Foods/Co-op you will see white people pushing carts buying things like Flaxseed Oil, wine, Tofu versions of meat, and organic kohlrabi. They also provide prepared foods, that single white people often purchase to avoid cooking.

This is important information, as this section of the store is loaded with single white people.

These stores are excellent for bringing children, as there is nothing that they actually want.

“Oh, mommy, look chocolate!”

“No Joshua, that’s carob.”

“I want it.”

“Ok.”

The child will then take a bite and realize that nothing in the store can be trusted.

Why do white people like 9 dollar macaroni and cheese from whole foods?

Terence O'Sullivan on March 27, 2008 at 5:24 am

Because at $9.00 it must be better then the $2.50 stuff from ordinary food stores because you can tell your friends it’s from whole foods. Same ingredients but more natural because you are paying three times as much.

Well …. If you must know, from the white guys perspective: First realize that food does not scale. Realizing that, ask yourself how much money enough cheese to make a mac and cheese would cost, then figure the materials cost on $2.50 is about $0.50.

A quick product list will tell you that the only food products that you could package for that price incluce processed things like high fructose corn syrup and the like.

Now as a guy who works in Medicine, Here are some facts, that are basically common sense: Eating processed food is roughly as likely to kill you via heart disease then smoing is via lung cancer.

It doesnt make any difference what so ever if you buy it at whole foods or safeway, but a $2 box of Mac and cheese is awful for your health. Meanwhile, enough real cheese to serve 2 in a mac n cheese costs about $4, and noodles another $1.

or just don’t eat mac and cheese, if you care about being healthy.

Actually, it’s more like 4 boxes for $5 which is not much more than Kraft. If you want to know what the difference is, read the lists of ingredience and compare, then you will know why some of us are willing to pay a few cents more.

dude, i always thought that veggie is organic. how foolish i am. I grew up in a culture where families have gardens and grew lots of veggie. Mom and dad still up at 6 on weekends to tend garden. ma and pa’s veggie consisted of 50% of each meal. And because (asian immigrants) eat mostly “organic” food we are shorter than other ethnic groups, yes that’s include white folks too. And since 2nd generation immigrants starting eating “non-organic” american food, we got bigger and taller- the average american-born asian man is 6 ft vs their parents generation 5’4″. intake of organic or non orgainc food is relative. the key is eating healthy in preparation and balance quanity.

Umm… the average American-born Asian man is NOT 6 ft. I can promise you this.

You mean Asians who have abandoned traditional meals filled with rice and vegetables and embraced the American diet have waists that are 6ft right? Also getting up at 6am for some fruitful labor (hah, a pun) is also totally un-American, crazy immigrants.

I can assure you, there are very few people in America with 6ft waists too.

Like I said previously, anyone who shops at WF for organic food obviously isn’t a farmer.

here’s a farmer who shops at whole foods, and the best part is we eat organic and farm conventionally, yay spray!

It has nothing to do with organic food, and everything to do with protein. and it’s not just Asians, it’s southern Europeans, native south american, etc.

But, this is a timing thing. Immigrants have grown larger than their parents, and until recently supermarket food has been relatively very good for you. But in the last 10+ years it has steadily gotten worse, and food that in excess can be bad, like red meat, has gotten cheaper. so you are now seeing these same family lines have spawned large children with excessive heart disease and diabetes that the previous generations didn’t have.

everyone, not just white people, have to be active and demand better food quality. Not sure why this is a white peoples’ thing in this article, most of the groovy people that run the coop in Atlanta happen not to be white. but yes, there is a much greater percentage of wealthy white people than others in the US so Whole Foods probably does target them hardest.

Because though Wal*Mart does many of the same things as Whole Foods, Wal*Mart’s low prices attract poor people (of any ethnicity, especially the Wrong Kind Of White People). Whole Foods’ high prices keep the Right Kind of People walking through the door. It makes shopping more enjoyable for them.

I shop at WF and mac n cheese costs less than $3.00. Oh, I am not white, nor obese and have no health issues and that is why I , along with many other HUMANS shop at WF. You should try it!

Do you understand what’s going on with the food it has nothing to do with white people look up GMO’s and the dangerous effects that it can cause to your body. Search the connection of the GMO’s where do they come from be aware. Look up neurotoxins (MSG) which these stores and your local grocery stores carry also. Think to yourself why would someone pay more for certain foods. Were all one we need to work together instead of apart. Be an informed consumer. UNDERSTAND WHATS GOING ON LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE.

i hate some wf customers!!! i have to know cause i work there. so fucking spoiled and demanding! chill out a little. just b/c we are out of stock on freaking liver cod oil doesnt mean you have the right to yell at me. and just b/c we dont have the right clementines in stock doesnt mean i am worthless to you! get laid before you come in the store. maybe then you start smiling back! just saying. i love wf. love what we stand for and love looking out for our community…but man…

people who eat organic food don’t realize that eating organic takes jobs away from immigrants

How? Organic farms need workers, too — in some cases, more workers than non-organic farms. More jobs, not fewer!

Please clarify Josh.
Many organic are fair trade companies pay FAIR wages to thise less fortunate in other companies. Besides why shouldn’t we support American family owned organic farms that have been in businesses for decades? Also, the majority of farming and agricultural communities employ immigrants

that is ridiculous!!!! Organic Farms have workers on them to genious. Where the hell do you think they grow that stuff. Try all over the world. You should know what you’re talking about before you leave comments that make you sound dumb and uneducated.

More importantly, people eating “organic” food have obviously never worked on the average farm and realize that it is near impossible to fund an organic farm without HUGE market entry costs.

once again real live farmer from a real live average farm here who eats organic food and buys piles of chemicals and fertilizers, it is nearly impossible to fund any type of farm, look at your subsidy programs down there.

the frozen organic veggies are made in china! just saying…how about growing in US and lower cost b/c of transportation and wasted energy?

OMG CAROB!!!
Been there, been tricked, spit that shit out!

I was going to suggest Whole Foods, and low and behold, you already had it! This blog rocks.

Buy organic tomatoes and normal and try them together. Then decide if the organic is worth it…

you can totally taste the difference and know its w/o GMO. isnt that worth it?

None of your business... on May 20, 2008 at 8:20 pm

No. If a tomato costs $1.17 and is pumped full of chemicals, and an ‘organic’ one costs $2.50 and is chemical-free, I’ll buy the chemical loaded one and feel good about being on top of the food chain.

You know, where we can modify food with gene manipulation to grow the way -we- want. I’ll take that over leaving it to nature…

natural selection, eat up my friend, more organics for us in the end!

Whole Foods is way yesterday,
Nowadays white people like Trader’s Joes. Much cheaper, just as good food. White people especially like 2 Buck Chuck red wine.

I know because I speak for all white people everywhere.

By the way, pull up your pants, they’re way too low.

Terence O'Sullivan on March 27, 2008 at 5:33 am

I like 2 buck red wine…If I pull my pants up any higher the blood circulation to my penis will be cut completely. A nil erection effect..Is that a white person thing and can I trust those Viagra emails I receive to deliver the goods?

I support your theory on 2 buck chuck. My friend got married last month somewhere in bumblefuckit Georgia and I was forced to travel 3 hours to the nearest Whole Foods to procure 3 cases of it for the reception. White people are devoted to the chuck…

oh is that why they are opening stores all over the world? Because they are so yesterday? Just because you don’t shop there doesn’t mean it’s yesterday. Besides that – have you seen all of the other chain stores start bringing in natural and organic products…..gee, I wonder where they got that idea! They only copied whole foods because they saw the trend. Wal Mart and Central Market jumped on the band wagon so fast. Have you noticed that a lot of new stores ( especially Central Market) are practically identical to WF’s? You don’t usually copy people when they are over. The only difference is WM and CM don’t know shit about organics. They just copy.

Soooo funny. Is “re-useable shopping bags” on here yet? Whole Foods is a perfect segue to this great white phenomenon.

I’m glad you find trying to save the planet funny. Do you know anything about how those plastic bags will stay in landfills FOREVER or do you just comment on stuff you don’t know shit about? All they’re trying to do is save the planet for our kids, their kids, etc. Guess you don’t think about that. You think you are the only important person here and this earth is going to be around forever…..think again. Do you read the paper or watch the news at all? At this moment there is a plastic floating island in the middle of the ocean twice the size of Texas!!! Look it up online, it’s not hard to find. Imagine this going on for another 20 years. There will be no ocean left….only plastic bags.

yeah, it’s the white people that will save this planet for your kids. Meanwhile you sit around and talk a bunch of crap you clearly don’t know anything about. You can thank us later for saving your sorry lazy way of thinking.

Oh go hug a tree for crying out loud. You’re the main culprits who helped f it up so quiturbitcchin.
Anybody got any styrofoam for sale–brb I’m going to get more hairspray.
bwwahhhahahahahahhaaaa

5thKolumnisto on May 15, 2008 at 1:32 pm

I have an “organic garden” (we used to call this a “garden”) and supplement that with purchases walked home in my re-usable backpack from the (employee-owned) corporate grocery whore eight blocks down the street.

My carbon footprint is smaller than yours. Also, my cock is bigger. Choke on that, whitey.

that’s right cut down on the waste buy a pile of re-useable made in china grocery bags, i’m not against less plastic, i’m just for less everything!

Or as we call it in the office….”Whole Paycheck”. White people love paying $8.99 for a $4.99 6 pack of microbrew.

Don’t confuse the word white with the word rich. Some of us are simply trying to improve the quality of our lives, at any cost!

Please tell me where you are buying microbrew for such reasonable prices.

While I try to buy from local, independent grocery stores and generally avoid Whole Paycheck (dude, everybody calls it that) like the plague, when I’ve gone there, I’ve found their microbrew prices were pretty good.

And, seriously, if you can find a 4.99 6-pack of any good microbrew, share.

(For the record, I am not white. LIVING PROOF OF THIS SITE’S TRUTH!)

You don’t have to have a membership to shop at co-ops. You just get perks if you do buy one.

Also, I have to say how much I sometimes hate die hard Whole Foods shoppers. I’m probably even more white for saying this, but WF is still industrial agriculture people! Local and sustainable (not necessarily organic which is often over rated and just a label from corporate American government anyway) trumps all else! Go for the co-op!

>.> I think that’s enough from me for one night.

Indeed! And, ironically, White People’s beloved Whole Foods actively crushes local, sustainable farmer’s markets and co-ops!

Then again, White People also love irony–see entry #50.

Most people wouldn’t even know what farmers’ markets were if it weren’t for whole foods. Therefore, it actually supports them.

what a bunch of crap! Where is it exactly that you get your information again? It just so happens Whole Foods actively supports local farmers. Have you been in the stores at all? You will find “Buy Local” signs all over their stores!!!! They buy from local farmers and promote these items. It helps keep food cost down instead of paying a million dollars in gas to transport it. You people could at least do your research before you start spouting off a bunch of crap you don’t know crap about!

Who cares about organic anything? The human race needs to evolve to eat inorganic…how else are we to endure?

LeatherTuscadero on April 1, 2008 at 10:12 am

What? Are we supposed to eat rocks now? That’s it, I am totally done with “health foods!” You know, there is a Jack n the Crack right near the local Whole Foods; I am now officially naming the Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger my Food of Protest. My colon and heart will hate me–but my spirit will live on in the dank breeze that exits my cornholio!
Down with health foods and rocks. Let the health nuts beware: The Foul Stench of Freedom is upon them! We will not eat rocks (or crappy rice cakes, damn it)!

once again…another idiot! The stores sell cookies, crackers, chips, milk, anything you can buy in a crappy grocery store you can buy in Whole Foods…..diffenence…the ingredients. You will find actual food ingredients instead of a bunch of chemical compounds created in a lab to be shelf stable. You should be able to pronounce ingredients ( example: wheat, sugar, cocoa, butter, etc) instead of modified food starch, sulfites, hydrogenated oil. This is not food. YOu can eat non food crap, but I’d rather eat food thank you.
Your colon and heart aren’t just going to hate you…they will just quit working. So eat away..hope it’s worth your life.

um, people who don’t want to eat pesticides and other poisons care about eating organic. Do you even know what it means to be organic? Don’t answer that…i honestly don’t care.

I don’t know, I’ve paid 9 dollars for a single beer in a bar before. 9 bucks for a six pack, so a buck fifty per bottle. Seems reasonable considering how delish the beer in question would be. Of course out here you can get 6 spaten optimators or something really good for like 7 bucks, mexican beer is a little less.

“In modern white person culture, Whole Foods has replaces churches and cathedrals as the most important and relevant buildings in the community.”

LOL. very observant.

Some white people I know lived with a white person aunt for a summer. This white person aunt was all about shopping at natural healthy white people stores such as you describe.

My white-people friends were apparently trashy, non-cultured, almost non-white-people kids because they liked eating non-organic and non-close-to-the-earth sugared cereals.

The white-person aunt told them that that she had Honeycomb for them to eat. Imagine their joy at finally getting a sugar-packed, crunchy-in-milk treat made by a major cereal manufacturer.

But white-person aunt had a trick to make sure the kids’ natural health and well-being were preserved. When she said “Honeycomb,” she didn’t mean the cereal, she meant all-natural-bee-flower puke preserved in hexagonal wax.

Those bad kids soon lost their appetite for honeycomb when they realized that they didn’t enjoy the good-for-them wax nearly as much as their aunt hoped.

LeatherTuscadero on April 1, 2008 at 10:26 am

What kind of whacko tries to feed kids wax?! Why not sweep up some dirt and claim it’s powdered sugar? No, maybe the old coot should scrape some mold up and slather it onto mega whole grain bread and call it jelly.
I had a great aunt like this. I have no memory of her. Why? Because she was a vegan and died young and thin, because she wouldn’t eat some damned food. Moron!
Just eat the Fruit Loops and the Pizza Hut and live life. No matter what slop or “health food” you eat you’re day has already been marked. So, down the hatch!

you know there is actually powdered sugar, jelly, bread, and any other food you can think of in Whole Foods. Difference is there is not fake made up in a lab shit added. Fruit and sugar to make jelly…hmmm there’s a concept. Now turn over your jar and read the ingredients. Do any of those sound natural to you? That’s what I thought!

5thKolumnisto on May 15, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Really? I wouldn’t know what’s available at WF unless I care to make a 500 mi. r/t without a car. I’m looking at the label on my preserves (“jelly” is already processed fruit beyond any recognition), but there is no label. Brb, gotta ask the lady next door what she put in here besides the berries I picked myself.

OMG! REFINED sugar (aka WHITE sugar)? In my preserves?

Does buying “jelly” with refined sugar from a store hundreds of miles away sound natural to you? That’s what I thought.

i don’t buy from “whole paycheck”, i only buy slow food.

The Carob I think is the give away that the writer is actually white. Nobody else could know. Unless he’s actually asking white people of course. But still, no white person would give up such painful information as having parents who gave them carob.
It tastes like crap

What person of color would even think, much less care to put the effort into making such a pointless and ridiculous site about us (white folk)? OF COURSE S/HE IS WHITE!

How about if I call you not very funny?

of course a biggot jerk off like yourself keeps your name annonymous. Why would you call out people that have nothing to do with this discussion..nevermind, don’t answer that. You only have to answer to one, and it’s not me. YOu will answer for it though.

well then don’t be a racists……RACISTS!!!!

anyone who would take the time to make up a stupid list like you did….is clearly a racists. Which you know this because you wouldn’t of said don’t call me a racists if you didn’t think those were racist remarks.
You are neither funny or clever…which is the problem with having people like you in this world.

I think it’s hilarious :)

I wanted to laugh at the post above…but it wasn’t funny :-( I wouldn’t call your comment racist, just stupid. Next time, try to be a little more insightful and/or unique (beans, welfare, rice, um…yeah)

I am actually a black woman who shops at Whole Foods and this is so on point. When I go in, people look at me like I’m in the wrong place and my son HATES everything there. lol lol lol

you just have to buy the right stuff. Try the choc milk, cereal, toaster pastries ( like pop tarts), fruit, the 2 bite brownies and cookies are awesome!! The chips are good too. You can still have junk food, it will just not be full of lab created ingredients.

[...] People Like, which is a blog about, uhm, stuff that white people like. Examples include recycling, Whole Foods, Arts Degrees and – bring on the flame wars – Asian girls. I’m assuming the blog is [...]

the blogs were actually supposed to be about whole foods but as usual people have to give their stupid oppinions about anything and everthing. Doesn’t matter whether they know what the hell they are talking about or not…they just like to talk.
Besides that…it’s not really an insult to say white people like to reycle and shop at WF. Oh there go those damn white people agian trying to save the planet. For shame.

5thKolumnisto on May 15, 2008 at 2:23 pm

White North Americans trying to save the planet with overpriced vanity products and “recycling” (recycling crap that needn’t have been “cycled” in the first place)?

If you “save” the planet by “working” (expending energy) more to earn more to pay more at every turn, you’re not saving anything but your own conscience.

I’ll get back to you when I’m done laughing.

la legione di resistenza on February 19, 2008 at 6:40 am

Whole Foods should be called White Foods! I love this site.

just because you do not have the money to shop there doesn’t mean you need to spread racist hate remarks. You are all racists jerks. It’s okay though…there’s plenty of room in hell for all of you.

5thKolumnisto on May 15, 2008 at 2:54 pm

I’d like to turn M’s box over and see what the ingredients are. He or she ought to come with a warning label: “Caution: contains paid shill for Whole Foods, Inc.” Talk about your artificial (with emphasis on “artifice”) ingredients.

M, learn to be less obvious, plz.

That doesn’t even make sense. There’s nothing artificial about eating natural found from earth foods instead of lab created foods. because I happen to like natural foods – and the only place to get them around here is whole foods doesn’t mean anything artificial or has anything to do with ethnicity or being a shill.

5thKolumnisto, learn to be less stupid, plz.

I’m white and we call Whole Foods “the empire” because they support industrial organics instead of small farmers like me and farmers I know (80% white). But I am so white for saying that so you can categorize me as lame for not aligning with your fashion taste.

ChrisFS- I couldn’t agree more!! I have never been to a Whole Foods (too far away) but Trader Joe’s rocks!!! The 2 Buck Chuck ($3 on the east coast) Cabernet is awesome and I will drive an hour to get it!! I even walk in there with my reusable grocery bags… pretty white, huh?

how can you agree with a statement when you just said you’ve never been to whole foods before. Why the hell are you on this blog again? It must be boring being you.

Part of why white people think Whole Foods is better is because it is more expensive.

uh, no. The reason PEOPLE like WF’s is because it’s real food!! Not some bs made up in a lab then called food. Ever try reading those ingredients on the crap you buy? it’s not food..it’s junk with more junk added to it. Junk not found in nature. Who in their right mind would want to buy something because it’s more expensive. That’s so stupid! Real food costs more because they didn’t take a bunch of cheap filler crap, cheap shelf stabilizers, and cheap made ingredients. It’s actually food. Which we would rather pay more for real food.

Unfortunately the food is real, the marketing is made in a lab and you just fell for it.

your comment doesn’t even make sense. Again…try turning those boxes over and reading those ingredients. There is so little of actual food ingredients listed. The rest are just some chemical b.s they came up with to get you to buy it, and have it last forever.

rural to urban on February 20, 2008 at 3:47 am

so much of this is true of the urban dwelling white person… but what of the rural? and i have to agree with an earlier comment that some of this does sound suspiciously like “hipster” behavior. lol.

Let me correct you and state that their beef is grass fed and grain finished. Yep, and we own stock in them as well as shopping there. Edeath’s Mom:/

I agree with ChrisFS. Whole Foods is so last year. All I talk about with my white friends is how WF overcharges and how Trader Joe’s is so much better. In line with the more recent post about the absence of white people brining credibility to ethnic settings, Trader Joes has a different “Trader” for each ethnic food group:

Trader Jose’s (Mexican food), Trader Ming’s (Chinese food), Baker Josef’s (bagels), Trader Giotto’s (Italian food), Trader Joe-San (Japanese food), Trader Johann’s (lip balm), and Trader Darwin’s (vitamins).

This is delightfully satisfying to white people.

i got to say that nothing is more depressing when you go shopping. its so freaking expensive even when buying the store brand. i couldnt imagine what the price tags are there.

also in pittsburgh, all these places are moving into the depressing parts of town. have a ghetto, put in a whole foods and a target and mission complete.

okay..so you have never been to a Whole Foods. Then why the hell are you here leaving comments!!!!

This blog needs to be changed to “What White People in California Like”….this d@mn sure isn’t representative of white people where I’m from.

Can we say “Piggly Wiggly?” Piggly Wiggly, this is where soy sauce is in the “foreign” section, and there are only 2 bottles and they’ve been there since 1995. Yep, Piggly Wiggly, hush puppies and football. YEE HAW!

That’s hilarious and so true. Where I live there’s Walmart and- um- Walmart and people think you’re nuts if you don’t shop there or if you confess you prefer food that’s real and not processed chemicals of death in a box.

The great carob scam! My ex-wife insisted not only on eating carob, but on having me do so as well. I think it was at that point the arrows started to point down. But then again, I did geek (i.e. non-white) studies and she studied philosophy, so what do you expect?

Do black people ever shop @ WF?!

Whole Foods is a scam. They’re selling this idea of all-natural, sustainable foods. But the only way to get that is through the concept of Slow Food (www.slowfoodnation.com) which they absolutely do NOT adhere to. They’re selling a lie, and EVERYONE’S BUYING IT! Spread the word, and stop a WF from moving into your home town.

That’s hilarious. I agree with most of it (the stuff it said about Whole Foods itself), but my wife and I (both white) shop at a natural food market that is small and independent. We believe in the Slow Food movement (www.slowfoodnation.com) and it’s principles. Whole Foods is full of it. They’re selling a lie, and everyone is buying it. We need to educate people on this. Communities do need at least one natural/organic grocery store, but it needs to be an independent/local business. A national chain, by definition, can’t deliver on what they’re promising. I’ve researched it quite a bit. Definitely check out the Slow Food website, and send anyone to it (if you agree with it) who you think needs to hear it.

It’s a complex issue, but I believe in this organic stuff because industrial agriculture is not only screwing up the people who eat it, it’s destroying the environment, and causing all kinds of very serious problems in other parts of the world that don’t even have these “Super Markets”.

I know this blog isn’t really about all that I’ve said, but it needed to be said.

Whole Foods is not selling a lie. What exactly is it that they lie about? Besides that….less than 300 stores does not constitute as a national chain supermarket. When you see one on every corner ( Wal Mart) then it’s a chain. You guys have no idea about what Whole Foods does. Where, who, they buy from etc. Not to mention ….they started the organic revolution you big dummies! They began in 1980 as a very small natural foods store. The only thing they did was grow bigger as the demand for natural and organic food made it’s presence. They support local farmers, give loans to small farmers in other countries ( mostly women) they support the green movement…hell they invented the organic and green industry. All of the other stores just copied them because they thought they could make money.

Ever been to Vancouver? Organic and health food is like water there, and has been since the 60′s and we have been buying fish off the fishing boats since I was a kid.

I’d rather shop at Whole Foods than Safeway or Loblaws etc. but they are not into local at all – at least in the community business way. They bought out all the Capers’ (local and organic health and hi-end grocery stores here) and shut the ones down that competed with their stores. Total Starbucks move – another thing we avoid here btw.

white people LOVE trader joe’s. i worked there for a bit, until i was fired for choosing my education than cult Joe’s. wp would come into the store & yell “OMG I AM SO EXCITED YOU GUYS ARE IN ATLANTA NOW!!! I LOVE YOU GUY’S!!! I’M FROM L.A. & I HATE KROGER, I AM SOOOOO HAPPY YOU ARE HERE!!! HWERE IS THE CHUCK???” OMG!

man Whole Foods is the new Mall for white hipsters, hippies, and yuppies.

Soon as a rapper mentions WF in a song,,,all the brothas will soon invade it and drive all the white people back to Safeway, Krogers, Bloom, and Publix….

Why? did it in the song By Torpedo Or Crohn’s

But that’s a white dude rapping. So i’m not sure if it counts.

One thing I notice is that white people like to have food allergies. They’re always allergic to either something really basic – like wheat gluten or really random things like isocarbonates, tannins and green m&m’s. I think they make up some of these allergies as a more controllable explanation for mood swings or whatever.

White people food habits on February 24, 2008 at 1:44 pm

And, white people are the only people that email back for rsvps with lists of foods they won’t eat when you invite them over for dinner.

I think you should do a post on white people dinner parties or how white people eat single plates and don’t share at asian and indian restaurants. i hate going out for ethnic food with white people.

LeatherTuscadero on April 1, 2008 at 1:34 pm

If someone RSVP’s me for a dinner invitation and is trying to set his or her own menu when they’ve been invited to my home, I’ll RSVP them right back saying the whole thing is off and they can go suck up a stump. If it’s a friend of mine I’ll already no if he or she has serious issues with one food or another and will have planned for it; if it’s an acquaintance he or she better have some deadly allergies to inform me of if they’re going to try and dictate what I’ll be serving in my own home.
Although, I haven’t a single occasion in my entire life where I’ve invited someone I really want in my home over for dinner and done it via email. Anyway, that’s just me. Wholefoods isn’t my spot and sharing food is just a part of being sociable; I don’t want someone stuffing their hands in my plate, but I have no problems sharing food across a table–in fact many places I’ve eaten, if you don’t get busy snagging food from the abundance in the middle you’ll end up with scraps, The only thing I hate is that if I am not hungry and am just along for the ride, I may just sit there and have a snack and drink some beer which some folks find insulting (What, you’re too good to eat with us?). Hey, I’ll eat on my own schedule, thank you very much; pay attention to your own stomach why don’t you?

well most white people hate ethnic food so we’re even! Like I really want to share a plate some slob has been eating off of. Disgusting!

“They also provide prepared foods, that single white people often purchase to avoid cooking.”

After working in the prepared food dept, I wholeheartedly agree on bashing people who shell out. The markup is incredible, just buy the damn Whole Foods cookbook already. But then…I’m not white…

LeatherTuscadero on April 1, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Yep it’s true idiocy to work all week for money to pay for the things one wants. Yep, it’s better I should come tired and go to work in the kitchen making food, washing pots, pans, dishes and utensils when I could be sitting on the couch relaxing after either taking 10 minutes to put a prepared meal together or eating some takeout. Yep, convenience be damned, my money should go to save the sacred blue turtle or feed a kid with no head in Tanzania, not to a store which has food ready to go, that’s just wrong.
Also, only white folk like convenience. No brown folk ever patronize the frozen food or prepared food sections (in whatever market they shop). Damn us white people to hell: We like Stouffer’s Frozen Crud! God, I’m crying inside–but the new Bistro style panini is very tasty and in only 5 minutes.
Tee Hee ;)

I’m skeptical of hating on whole foods. . . after all, asian grocery stores and latino grocery stores are full of “whole” foods—i.e. dried seasonings and fresh veggies. I get that it’s dumb for rich people to feel better about themselves because they shop at a certain store, especially when that store is almost as madly capitalist and industrially-farmed as the grocery stores they’re avoiding. . . but I worry that loads of poor people of color stick to their crappy sugar-filled and hydrogenated diets because of tradition or because they feel alienated by “white” eating habits. And then they wind up with diabetes and heart conditions at age 40 and pass these awful habits onto their kids. And that’s really fucked up.

LeatherTuscadero on April 1, 2008 at 2:25 pm

I, too, find it messed up to see so many grotesquely obese people–people who love their local Vallarta (market in CA) for all the traditional “ethnic” fair it has. I find it messed up that people will feel so put off by just going to a regular supermarket because it has white people stuff there that by avoiding it they think they’ll be better off. If you’re stuffing crap into you’re body, I don’t care if you bought it at Ralphs or Vallarta or the traditional slop trough of your people, it’s still crap. If your child is 200lbs at age 8, the traditional slop isn’t doing any good–maybe you need to re-think the whole “white folks is crazy” thing.
I myself love crap. I try to throw in a little decent food from time to time, in an effort to offset the evil, but I still likes me some Jack in the Box–and large combo, no f*ing small, damn it! Now that’s white folk slop. Although I am only 130lbs (I’ll probably die of a heart attack in a few years–but hey, more people are living through them now, so one more Sirloin Melt won’t hurt).

[...] Figuring out what white people like can be difficult, but luckily the Internet has provided a handy reference guide for decoding the mysterious tastes and distastes of white people. For example, white people like gentrification (as evidenced by the existence of a store that exclusively sell outrageously overpriced chocolate), knowing what’s best for poor people, and Whole Foods. [...]

gentrification is the only way to get rid of the damn ghettos! We can’t leave it up to you….you don’t give a shit! You like living in filth and having gangs walk the streets. Yea, thats a really nice life! Ps…the choc is hand made from all around the world…not like Hershey’s who makes theirs in a sweatshop! That’s why it’s cheap idiot!

Note for single white males with arts degrees: Working at whole foods can be an excellent way to meet single white females with arts degrees, proclivities for recycling, and awareness. This single white females also usually like yoga (hence they are physically fit) and will accept dates with a grocery store worker because that grocery store happens to be the center of their universe.

Note to single white females with arts degress and affiinities for yoga: Because white males working at whole foods often pass the time by hitting on you, take advantage by flirtatiously inquiring about a certain expensive food item. More often than not you will get it for free (whole foods allows employees to give away up to $25 of merchandise a day).

I am black and I grew up on carob and in health food stores…I have not had it in years….

white people like whole foods cause their aren’t stupid people like the ones that run this site shopping there.

In addition to the many grammatical errors in that post, it’s “there” not “their.” Who’s stupid?

Exactly!!!!! It’s the only place in any town that isn’t filled with uneducated biggot idiots!!!

OK, I love the satire in this entire stuffwhitepeoplelike blog, very well done!! But perhaps it is useful to re-name it and think of it this way -
for many of the items on this blog…

This is a FLAKE list!!!

i.e many of these are more culture than race dependant (though obviously white dominated). I’m a liberal white guy from the midwest who moved out west (so my threshhold for “flakiness” is probably pretty low compared to the liberal white guy from California or Oregon). So for (square, midwestern) me, I label many of these behaviors (organic foods, Yoga, NPR, etc…) as…. FLAKE!!!! I developed such a “flake” list a long time ago. Perhaps best described in this form –

YOU MIGHT BE A FLAKE IF…

-You do not own a TV (this was always at the TOP of my flake list, I view this as pretty extreme behavior)

-You won’t eat a cheeseburger

-You don’t watch NFL football. (baseball, basketball, or hockey may be freely substituted here, but NOT soccer. If you watch or participate in soccer – at least in the U.S. – you are a flake)

-You worship Macintosh computers

-You listen to NPR

-You look on in horror when someone throws a pepsi can into the regular trash

-You ride a bicycle to work

Anyway, this is most of my original list I made years ago, I did not necessarily attach race to it, but I understand the association. This now 76 item blog is brilliant!! Great work and great satire!! I can now add at least 20 more items to my “flake” list! (but your list is so much better). Of course the irony (I know, irony is on the list) is that this square from the midwest (me) has by now taken on more than a few of these behaviors…. and I heard about this blog on NPR.

And people – lighten up!! This whole blog is brilliantly done (by a liberal white guy making fun of himself and his culture btw) and hilarious!!

I always used “flake” to describe someone who didn’t follow through on commitments.

… im a flake… omg… i literally have a sad face now :(

grain-fed beef is horribly unnatural, inhumane, and unhealthy. get it right, blogger! we eat grass-fed beef to feel good about ourselves.

LeatherTuscadero on April 1, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Grass? Grain? My cow better be eating other cows, maybe even some people. I want a mean and nasty cow going to slaughter; that means tastier meat on the barby. There’s nothing like bloody murder to perk up a boring dinner plate. There should also be growth hormone and chemicals. The best thing would be to have a cow 20 feet tall with 5 eyes and 7 legs snarling, crapping, stomping ranchers being taken down by Apache helicopters; man, you could watch the video while eating the giant steaks that would come from such a monster. That would sell big time: “Monster Cow: Death Steak, Grade M–with kill video included.” Wow! It’s white folk food, yep. :0

no, your cow is eating hormones, antibiotics, and other sick cows. Your cow also gets to eat bad meat, cheap grains and gets to spend it’s whole life in a space so small it can’t walk, lay down, and it gets to stand in it’s on fecies….>Go for it!! It that diseased hormone filled antibiotic shit meat.

Dreddy Krueger on April 26, 2008 at 11:54 am

Holy Cow. I think I just had an orgasm.

I would SO eat steak from that cow.

And stab handicapped people in the eye when I was done.

And I’m a vegetarian.

Don’t forget to go to hell when you’re done!

People here are missing a Major point in buying organic, besides the fuits/veg themselves: SOIL.

Soil that has had chemicals seep into it over and over again becomes unusable, and there is NOT an unlimited supply.

Rent the totally white documentary “The Truth about Farmer John”!

There, that’s my two white cents.

Good lord, I love Whole Foods- this article is spot on.

I also take vitamins and flax seed supplements.

I am also single and often buy prepared foods to avoid cooking.

And I love all the free samples.

I am a black person, I love Wholefoods! So what does shopping there have to do with race???? How about a blog devoted to things healthy people like?

I don’t know if there is such a thing. Most of the people who are on these types of sites are all idiots. They just like to complain and talk crap about other people…it takes the pressure off of their sad little lives. That’s okay…we’ll out live them!

Ummmm. . .OK. But, I mean, you’re like, here too. You’re here reading all this crap. So, ummmm. . .like, what kind of idiot are you, Mr. M? You too just talked crap about us idiots. What does this mean?
My life isn’t sad, it’s pathetic, thank you very much. Whole Foods bites, Papa Johns rocks and smoking cigarettes is the best thing you can do for yourself. Yellowstone national park is going to blow any day now, so why try so hard to be healthy? Get wasted, have pizza and smoke a butt for God’s sake.

Come one people, wake up and see prepare for the end of the world. White people love armageddon–damn right!

Note that I said MOST of the people on this site are idiots. yes, I am here…Some people ( like myself) actually come thinking we might actually have a discussion about what the website talks about.

All your comment did was totally prove my point …. so Thanks!

And that’s Ms. M to you!

A person who looks white but really isn't on February 29, 2008 at 10:24 am

I agree with you rukidding and I’m a minority too

Please don’t read that StuffAsiansLike website. Stupidist shite i’ve ever read and i’m an Asian American. Silliest representation, silly website. Not even funny.

ahh yes…Trader Joes is surpassing Whole Foods as the nourishment haven for white people. after all, who could outdo their highly trendy staff (i.e. young hippy adults with ecentric tattoos and gauged ears) and clever comics in the biodegradeble coupon books? and the 2 Buck Chuck is just an added bonus. in states, such as Maryland, where liquor can not be sold in grocery stores, flocks of white people can often be spotted migrating over the Virginia border, just so they can say that they bought decent $2 wine. however, never mention the abominable amount of money they must have spent on gas. such a verbal observation could potentially be detrimental to their health.

I wonder if white people are aware that Trader Joe’s is created and owned by Aldi???? I’ve shattered MANY a wp’s life’s dreams by breaking this news to them. They always look confused and bewildered. 2/3 of them refuse to believe me. I’m a wp btw.

There is a new Whole Foods in Oakland, California… It is heavily diverse. The staff and the customers. I would venture to guess that it is less than half white…

Organic is about clean soil, you can’t taste pesticides.

I spend just as much at WF as I did at Safeway and I am now getting better food. Fresher produce, better meat, Strauss milk (the best).

Join the revolution people. Just say no to Safeway and Albertsons and Winn Dixie…

I’m half Mexican half white, and I go to the Whole Foods in Palo Alto and I always feel weird because the customers are white and the people working are Mexican (except for the managers of course.)

I took my boyfriend to the Trader Joe’s in his town which is heavily black and latino, and the first thing he said when he entered was “Where did all these white people come from?”

They hide here to take refuge from the minorities. LOL.

Whole Foods combines many of the things us white people like. I love microbrews, and Whole Foods offers many organic microbrews. More importantly, a lot of these microbrews come from within 150 miles of the store’s location — which is better for the environment because it uses less energy to ship.

Where, please, are “Volunteer Work” and “Historic Preservation”?

beautifulshadeofbrown on March 4, 2008 at 9:55 am

I like to refer to WF as the Organic Panic! No shopper in the store is smiling I guess it is the pressure of having the need to feel like you must pay 5 bucks for an apple!!

I shop at WF in the UK and with the conversion rate I laugh hysterically everytime I reach the register.CRIMINAL…but I will not stop!

Screw YOU, Whole Foods! I only visit your highly polished stained concrete aisles when I happen to go with my SIL who has a gluten-intolerant husband, and while there I help myself to way more samples than is polite, hahahahaha! My kids buzz around the organic peaches like wasps (OMG I made an unintentional funny…we are Methodist honkies!) at a picnic and move on to the melons, the apples, the pears, the strawberries…

we hate it when people like you come and shop there. We’d prefer if you’d keep your kids dirtly little hands off of our fruit!!! Not to mention…control your damn kids. You should be teaching them how to act in public, not teaching that it is okay to steal and touch things that don’t belong to them. People like you should not have kids…and can stay away from Whole Foods for all we care!

which is exactly the reason I hate chain stores ( walmart, etc). They are filled with people like you and crazy kids running around touching everthing. Go WF’s!!!!

i love some of these comments…

“white people like whole foods cause their aren’t stupid people like the ones that run this site shopping there.”
but are they as stupid as the people who don’t know the difference between there and their?

“This blog needs to be changed to “What White People in California Like”….this d@mn sure isn’t representative of white people where I’m from.

Joe
Montgomery, AL”

Joe, I don’t know if you noticed, but you live in the deep south. it shouldn’t be a surprise that the white people there are the same brand of white people this blog talks about…

Hilarious,

This site makes the internet a better place… You’re right up there with wikipedia… what White insight…scary.

this is stupid… only a small set of white people buy organic food on a regular basis

“has replaces” should be “has replaced”. ;)

Some towns (such as Carrboro, NC) consider Whole Foods to be far too corporate; co-ops are the only acceptable stores for advanced whiteness. Ironically, they jack up the prices at “co-ops” like you would not believe.

whole foods is not corporate at all. Just because you say it is, doesn’t make it true.

5thKolumnisto on May 16, 2008 at 5:09 am

Uh, WFMI is a publicly traded corporation on NASDAQ. The “I” in the symbol stands for “Incorporated”. You’re clearly a stockholder/exec of said corporation, so you must know that.

You have to have money to shop at these places. The majority of white people don’t even have a clue what Whole Foods is. Must I say you are talking about a small minority of liberal white americans?

Holy s..t! I think that’s me in the background ,smoking a cig while waiting for my sister to come out.

Where I live, Whole Foods is actually cheaper than the mainstream grocery stores. And the people who work there are a WHOLE lot friendlier and eager to help you. Personally, I care what goes into my body and I prefer to buy it cheaper…

So true…

There are tons of specialty and organic markets around Dallas (Whole Foods, Central Market, World Market…) where one can get their fix of organic grains or some obscure tea. And no trip to these stores would be complete without some Colbie Caillat or Faust tunes playing overhead.

I think the Whole Foods post highlights the difference between West Coast Whites and Whites who live in the South-Southwest. I think people in the south proper just grew their own food because the land is cheap and that is what you do.
My granny was to poor to shop at a grocery store so she grew her own garden. I never ate franchise food growing up. So it is only natural that I eat organic now. Organic Soil = Organic Soul.

The WF in Pittsburgh is a joke. EVERYONE in this part of the country (SW Pa.) is no more than 2 generations removed (at best) from poor white trash. Period. The smart ones left a long time ago.

Lil Filipino Man on March 8, 2008 at 11:32 am

Hm, I am now enlightened. So that’s why white people go to Whole Foods. I want to learn more!

I am SO white! on March 8, 2008 at 2:11 pm

I always thought I didn’t have a religion, wasn’t a “type” or part of any group. This group shows we I have totally wrong! I am SOOO white!
My daily routine includes a bowl of organiz quinoa (purchased from the bulk bins at Whole Food or Noah’s) before going to my Contemporary African Studies class. I do my readings at my local organic fair-trade caffe, but I work at Starbucks as a Barista and educate my customers about the empty-calorie jammed lattes that I serve.
Did I mention I love sushi? I also think soy and vegan food tastes great and is better for the environment. I enjoy adding bee pollen to stuff whenever possible. My passion is traveling but only if I can camp, hike and spend lots of time outdoors getting to know the locals and interact with the culture. People really should spend more time outside instead of sitting and eating in front of the TV. Arrested Development and foreign/indie films are okay though.
My life style is very expensive and demanding and I sometime I just want to stay in bed and munch on chocolate bars while watching Friends re-runs, but the way I live is “rewarding”, “I’ve never felt better” and “I have a very low environmental impact” plus “carob just tastes better, you have to get used to it”!

whole foods is the shit. im not white either, and the one in west hollywood LA is full of other non white people.

but yes its kind of a “white” people place. nothing wrong with that. they have in my opinion really excellent grocery. money isnt an issue, if you like what your getting. do you like what your getting? i do .

im single. i hate cooking yes! the hot food bar.

i love that place. the one in San Francisco has some amazing prepared food !!!

While I think this is very funny (along with everything else on this excellently-written site) there are some interesting statistics to consider.

From Bill McKibben’s book Deep Economy, page 90:

“The idea that better-tasting food is a yuppie indulgence, however, is simply wrong. A recent survey of organic food buyers found Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics, and African Americans to be more likely than Caucasians to seek out organic food.”

latina in the house on March 11, 2008 at 8:59 pm

i am soooo down with what comment #2 said… lmao!! good stuff!

This post is a little outdated. Ever since Michael Pollin’s Book “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” (white people also love this book) it has been fashionable for white people to talk negatively about Whole Foods. This is mostly due to the fact that Whole foods gets most of it’s products from large businesses that produce their products in non-sustainable ways. This started approximately a year and a half ago. I believe Pollin’s new book, “In Defense of Food”, will provide white people with new insights on how they can consume healthy foods and save the world.

that’s so not true! Just because the dude wrote a book doesn’t mean he’s right! I know so many people that work for whole foods and you could not be more wrong.

I don’t even know what you guys are talking about….unless you just like making fun of white people. It’s interesting that every single legit study done recently shows that the racism in the U.S. is perpetuated by hispanics and blacks, not whites. And, more predjudice exists among hispanics than any other race ever before……just food for thought………..and on the subject of whole foods, most of you guys are completely wrong. Most people shop at whole foods because it’s the only place to buy certain foods. Educated people know that eating conventional USDA dairy products, meat and produce cause all kinds of health problems, the most noticable and immediate being hormonal disturbances. Its really simple and straightforward. So everyone can complain until the day is done about “white people shoppin at whole foods” and how stupid it is and how the only reason why white people shop at whole foods is because it’s so expensive………but those of us who avoid products with parabens, hormone filled dairy products, and meat that is loaded up with growth hormones and antibiotics, are infinitely healthier than those who dont.

Perfectly said! The rest of you…racists idiots!

Hey guys,

I just discovered this site and I am just dying with laughter. Oh, did I mention that I am not white?

I have never been inside of a WF…however I work with several African-Americans that do shop in WF. I found this site to be racist…I am apalled at the comments…Most of you need to get a life…there are far more minorities shopping at your WHITE market than you think…as one person wrote as soon as the rappers start singing about WF…there goes the store…then where will the WHITE people go???

chlorophyll on May 17, 2008 at 2:28 pm

WholeFoods is full of diverse minorities! However, they are usually either yuppies or trendy gentrified types. A more accurate statement would be to say that WF is about class, not race.

One of the things white people enjoy the most about shopping at Whole Foods is complaining about how expensive it is. They love to say: “they should call it WHOLE PAYCHECK foods, hahaha!” It’s not that funny.

no, they love shopping there because it’s not filled with racist jerks or gang bangers. You can all continue to shop at the other stores and leave WF alone.

ChknSoup4TheBloggersSoul on March 14, 2008 at 10:48 am

I like whole foods because of the flavored olives. They also have a greater selection of spices and cooking oils etc. Doesn’t have a lot to do with eating healthy for me. I really don’t see eating healthy as bad so go ahead and associate this trend as white.

Someone above made a bunch of observations about other races and a respondant (#20) said that their comments were just dumb. That’s the point. This blog is not that creative. Like others have mentioned, this blog has a lot more to do with yuppie behavior than white behavior. The only thing that makes this even slightly funnier than saying black people like watermellons is that this hasn’t been said as much. The author makes an observation and them follows it with a bunch of assumptions about that observation. Its just not that funny.

Hey, you wanna see some real white folk doing the Whole Foods thing, come to Seattle. You’d think Whole Foods started here what with their hemp shopping bags, the Birkenstocks, and all the f****ing Volvo wagons in the parking lot.

Hey, do you have a blog for that one yet. White people really love Volvo Wagons. For some reason they think if they are driving a Volvo they are helping the earth.

ChknSoup4TheBloggersSoul on March 15, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Hey lcrguy, what are you talking about? “Volvo’s helping the earth”?? Volvo’s are supposedly the safe car. If you’re gonna talk smack, at least know what you’re talking about. Volvo’s are one of the least common cars on the road. This doesn’t even make sense. I’m gonna take a better guess behind the motivation for getting a volvo wagon: It’s better than getting a minivan.

What’s funny (ironic) is white Liberals shopping at Whole Foods are evidently unaware that the company is fiercely anti-union and has fired employees who dared organizing and in general treats it’s employees as chumps; you know calling them “team members” while denying them real power, letting them dress funny and have wierd haircuts as long as they don’t so anything really wierd (to the CEO) like DEMANDING higher wages and better conditions.

Liberalism sure ain’t what it used to be; a set of political values and personal ethics based on the premise that the common man is owed consideration. Today it seems to be a fashion choice; a “lifestyle” combining personal tolerance with economic reaction and repression. And the right status symbols of course.

oh right…that’s why they’ve been on the Forbes best places to work for like 12 years in a row!! Again, another idiot who doesn’t know shit about it. By the way, they are very aware of it. WF does not try to hide the fact that they are anti union. THe wages are high and the conditions are great. I should know…I work there! Who else hires you at 10 dollars per hour just to be a cashier! In case you haven’t noticed min wage is only like 5 dollars…..idiot!

to chicken soup:

can you spell sarcasm?

Hah. I used to work at Whole Foods. It’s disgusting, but Whole Food’s manipulation of idiots is AMAZING.

they are far from disgusting. Gee, they want you to come in and do your damn job…what manipulation!

yea…uhh..
i work at whole foods…
and im not white..
and ive never seen so many white people in one store before…
and most of them dress funny too…
and they get so flustered when you tell em, “oh im sorry maam/sir, but were all out of that”…
“what do you mean youre all out of that?!”

I’m white and i live in a mostly black part of town. I drive across town to shop at whole foods because…

a. The selection at the “City Market” sucks, unless you like rotten produce and junk food.
b. The mostly black employees rarely even look me in the eye much less make me feel welcome.
c. The prices are not really much better than wholefoods anyway, yet the store smells and is in general disrepair.

If i were you, i’d be less interested in what white people are wearing and more interested in why companies are getting away with charging high prices for sub par products in prodominately black parts of town. No one is trying to keep black people out of whole foods. Ask yourself why the black community does not encourage black people to seek out more natural lifestyles? Is it because you don’t want to shop along side us, or because we look funny, or are you afraid you might be too much like us? Then you wouldn’t have anyone to make steriotypical judgements about.
When will we all just get to be individuals?

that’s anywhere you go that people get pissed when your out. The only difference is at least in WF they actually talk to you and let you know what’s goin on. Other stores don’t even acknowledge that your there. once again….it’s not their fault other races do not shop their stores. They don’t know any better and they simply don’t go.

So there’s this food co-op in east Cleveland (read: sidarm required).

I’ve NEVER seen a black person in there. They wander around on the adjacent sidewalks and then there is the abundance of semifluent latinos working the cash registers. Yeah… co-ops are whitey/college central.

This articale is so true.

Mighty Whitey on March 20, 2008 at 12:49 pm

This post is generally correct, but really, if one wants to be accurate, there are 5 classes of white grocery shopper: the single and poor-ish, single and hipster, trailer trash (single or married), married w/o kids, and married with kids.

Single and poorish – shops at Trader Joes or a local ethnic food place in their bad (read: ethnic) neighborhood that they live in.

Single and Hipster – alternate between Trader Joes and WF (because of the fresh veggies and yummy sandwiches)

Trailer trash – Wal-Mart and Stater Bros (for their fine meat selection)

Married with or without kids – Whole Foods (Trader Joes portions are just too small for families).

OldWhiteGrouch do you even have a clue what you are talking about? The union thing had nothing to do with higher wages, in fact Whole Foods on average starts team member at $3 an hour over the industry standard. I’m sure you knew that didn’t you? I’m sure you also knew that the team members and not some board dictates the benefits package didn’t you? Nice job of talking out of your ass.

Glorious what did you get terminated for?

What white people really like to do is spout off about shit without doing homework. The sarcasm on here was definitely worth a chuckle but some of you boludos that got on your soap-boxes are fucking clueless. Those of you that think WFM is all about the money and nothing else needs to look at how much money WFM has given around the world to support small producer/farmers….Look into the Whole Planet Foundation and you might realize what idiots you sound like on the soap box.

Those large corporate farms many of you are pouting about are actually made of actual co-ops, the farms not the stores and not RoboFarm. Also a comparison shop was done in the Wall Street Journal not long ago and it was found the prices were in line with the entire industry. So much for Whole Paycheck. Really folks educate yourselves before sounding like some uberliberal. It’s really an embarrassment to white folks.

Nice!!! Couldn’t of said it better myself!!!

Couldn’t HAVE. Jesus, woman, fix your grammar or STFU. It’s painful to read. You’re. They’re. Figure it out or stop posting.

For the record, Pittsburgh’s east-end food co-op, which straddles the boundary between 100% black and poor Homewood, and 100% white liberal-bourgie WASP and Jew Point Breeze, does get a reasonable level of black shoppers, albeit not the 50% representation of the neighborhood.

And you should know, that while Trader Joes may be just an ordinary grocery chain in California, when a lone Trader Joe’s opened in East Liberty – as part of a white gentrification-invasion, it became wildly popular among the richest yuppie-whites (even though PA prohibits wine sales in grocery stores, so no $2 chuck.)

Which leaves one more thing White poeple around here really like – anything having to do with California.

Higher than industry standard doesn’t mean higher than union wages, union wages are higher.

So called “team members” (how can you say that without choking on the bullshit?) get to choose from a variety of benefits the company chooses to offer, that’s not the same as employees dictating benefits.

Nice attempt there at being a ballwashing apologist for powerful corporate interests, I see a great future for you. Now go home and clean your nose.

Oldwhitegrouch – Union wages are NOT always higher. I AM union, at a co-op none the less, and we don’t even get paid holidays or time and a half for anything other than overtime (my wages are also pretty crummy.) There are other, nonunionized grocery stores in this area that actually pay better and have better benefit packages….

“Higher than industry standard doesn’t mean higher than union wages, union wages are higher.”

What are those high union wages you speak of? Is it the part of the union members check that goes towards the union in the form of fee’s and just what do those fee’s guarantee? Unions have a well known track record for corruption and not taking care of their own.

As for team members, it’s only semantics so don’t get too worked up. You can call it bullshit but so long as a they refer to their departments as teams, it stands to reason that they are in fact team members. Now that wasn’t too hard was it? You mock the freedom to choose from a variety of benefits which is still a far cry from the choices you get from union representation.

Let’s also look at the turnover rate which not only for the grocery industry but retail in general is amongst the lowest in the country. Fortune 500 has ranked it amongst the top 100 companies to work for with rankings consistently surpassing the previous year. This past year saw it’s highest ranking at 5. Must be all the bullshit and low pay huh?

Nice ballwashing soap-boxing for the union on your behalf. What’s with this union fascination anyways? Read a little too much in college or was it some lame Warren Beatty film?

Unions, that’s some funny stuff right there. Only a numpty would put that much faith in an institution with it’s track record.

oldwhitegrouch on March 21, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Better to pay 3% in dues and make 33% more money. As for corruption, well at least in a union you get to vote for the corrupt guy rather than having no choice as with no union. Or do you think that businessmen aren’t corrupt? Surely you’re not so naive is to believe that?

Unions, like other economic entities exist to benefit their own members and they do. They cost businessmen money ans strike at their power; that’s why one union member is more dangerous to the establishment than a thousand Greenies, Gay activists and vegetarians are. We make demands and negotiate for ourselves rather than take the crumbs offered and that drives many businessmen nuts. Note too that many places that pay well do so only to keep the union out; the union workers set the bar.

Trusting Fortune Magazine to say what the best places to work are is like trusting the fox to watch the hens, they wouldn’t have a clue how to find out even if they were honestly interested, which they aren’t.

I was a union member for 35 years and retired at 55 with a pension that pays better than working 40 hours a week. Now how are you gonna tell me that didn’t work well for
me?

People like me who won’t tip my cap to my “betters” drive people like you who do nuts; rather than see yourself as a dupe you’d rather that everybody came down to your level or servility.

All of which ignores the hypocrisy of people who consider themselves liberal shopping at a notoriously anti-union establishment. You can’t be a real liberal and be anti-union anymore than you can be racist or homophobe and be a real liberal; less so actually.

Just because a union worked for you doesn’t mean it works for everyone. If you are retired now, then you are not in the work place RIGHT NOW to see what’s really going on out there. It’s a different place these days and Whole Foods ROCKS!!!!!! You suck!

Old White Grouch is my hero

Trader Joe’s is where its at.

trader joes is 1\3rd the size of wf. They are just trying to be another copy cat. Whole Foods has been around for over 25 years!!! and they started as a very small company just like trader joes. Where do you think trader’s came up with that idea. Whole Foods does cirlces around trader joes.

trader joes has been around for WELL over 25 years and so what if the store is smaller? they limit their selection because nobody needs a selection of 900 different organic canned beans. larger stores are also cost more money to operate..therefore, smaller stores allow trader joes employees to br paid more without blowing off the local farmers and people who supply them with their groceries. additionally, pretty much every company in existance started off small…how else would they start? that’s not an idea that can be stolen.

“The use of paper bags, biodegradable packaging, and the numerous pamphlets outlining the company’s police on hormones, genetically modified food and energy savings.”

This is not a sentence. I love this blog (for the critics out there, lighten up! The humor is evident for anyone, like me, who can recognize their own behavior patterns in this list and laugh at themselves.) However, the grammar, spelling, and punctuation is horrible!

As we all know, white people love correcting others, and I am no exception. At least fix your sentences so they are readable. If you look at the above you’ll realize there is no verb, no point to the sentence. What are you trying to say about the use of paper bags etc.? Also, you probably meant ‘policy’. I’ve also noticed that like most Word users (get a Mac! :) ) you fail to use ‘it’s’ correctly. ONLY PUT THE APOSTROPHE WHEN YOU MEAN TO SHORTEN “it is”, ok?? If you reread the sentence and an ‘it is’ wouldn’t make sense there, then the apostrophe shouldn’t be there! This is elementary school stuff!!

Sorry, but these things really do annoy me (and probably annoy plenty of other white people as well.)

Another quick note, from another blog post: palette is referring to the art object paint is put on, or the range of color used by a painter. Palate is the part of the mouth used to help describe the way a food tastes or feels.

Out of concern for the environment our Whole Foods now charges 5¢ for bags. They wanted to encourage the SUV driving, free range chicken buying customers to bring their own tote bags.

What I’ve mainly witnessed is that these folks just pay for the bags, it’s a kind of status symbol to be seen walking down the street with a Whole Foods shopping bag. The best part is that Whole Foods is now charging money for something they used to give away. Genius!

I love this site!

“In modern white person culture, Whole Foods has replaces churches and cathedrals as the most important and relevant buildings in the community.”

LeatherTuscadero on April 1, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Maybe she was considering buying out Whole Foods–could food be more lucrative than scripture?

We call Whole Foods “Whole Paycheck”. We don’t shop there. My mother, who is in her 60s and yet nevertheless matches the demographic of this blog in that she has fits of apoplexy when our President speaks on the radio, which she has tuned mostly to NPR, plus she does yoga and shops at Farmers’ Markets and has dinner parties, gave us $20 per week specifically to buy organic milk for our daughter, which we didn’t follow through on.

Gary Hitler on April 6, 2008 at 4:27 am

Yes I drive a Saab, listen to NPR, and have bidet, I do Yoga, and have a thing for hamsters, but lets face facts, I also love foodstamps! Who cares if food prices rise, when you can get it for free! The list of things white people like is true, one thing that is missing, is stabbing people in the back, we do it for fun, advancement, and it would be in poor taste to do it face to face. So stab them in the back, white women love it, as well as white boys.

PazPraSempre on April 6, 2008 at 8:55 pm

I’m 1/2 Mexican and 1/2 White, and I always feel odd going to WHole Foods because the MExicans are the ones working there and the white people are the ones shopping.
I see Asians shopping there too. I think WF is more of a class thing than a race thing. IN low income neighborhoods there usually arent many places for healthy foods, and the unhealthiest is the cheapest; hence the heaviest people in the country tend to be poorer.

I’m white and I think grocery co-ops are retarted.

And Whole Foods is rediculously overpriced.

All the negative comments are ridiculous. Whole Foods is a great company and offers great products. Some of the products are more expensive but they are also much higher quality. Many of the products are very reasonably priced and still much higher quality than other store. Trader Joes is awful — limited selection and much lower quality than Whole Foods, especially the fresh produce. Conventionals served cheap, processed food.

Not a white girl on July 28, 2008 at 7:19 pm

You’re right, they have a great variety of delicious food & other stuff; who cares about the snobby-rich-white-trendy-whatever people who shop there? Enjoy yourself & the good food & try to be nice to whoever you meet.

You should do a separate post on Trader Joe’s. White people are extremely passionate about Trader Joe’s. (There’s almost something cult-ish about it…)

Naturally, Whole Foods is the largest corral of self-important, self-serving dolts in the world.

If I ever went on a violence spree, I’d gladly begin there.

You have got to be kidding with your comment! What if a person has food allergies and lives near Whole Foods and they happen to be a light skinned Latino, are going to judge them too? I shop there and there are plenty of uptight gringos, but then again where are there not?

once again people love to bitch about things they no nothing about! It cracks me up how judgemental people can be on subjects they are totally ignorant on. Whole Foods sells ‘real” food….that’s the difference here people. You can either choose to eat things like artificial flavors, artifical colors, hydrogenated oils, that will literally kill you, or you can eat actual food. Check your ingredients on the food you buy. You are not eating food. You are eating genetically modifed food like subtances. Look at the ingredients on your loaf of bread you just bought. Last time I checked there should be about 5 ingredients in bread. Yours will list about 100 and you can’t pronounce most of them. Our bodies were never meant to ingest and digest these chemicals. Which is why you are overweight, and are likely to suffer from heart disease, kindey failure, and a million other food related illnesses. To address your carob concerns…they have a full shelf of items that have real milk and dark chocolate. The difference again is the ingredients. READ THEM. Last time I checked choc had cocao, milk, butter, etc. now go read your candy bar. Bet you can’t pronounce half of the ingredients in them. Maybe becasue it’s NOT FOOD. WF also helps out local farmers, fair trade farmers, and farmers all around the globe. they are giving farmers from all around the world small business loans so that they can live. They actually pay them well instead of screwing them the way Wal Mart does. You Wal Mart shoppers are the ones supporting sweat shops, and poorly paid employees. Wal Mart drives all of the “little” people out of town. Not to mention they sell shit and do not care about what it does to you. For those trader Joe shoppers….buying real food is all that matters. Doesn’t matter where you get it.
And for the people addressing the bags – they give you a 5 cent discount for bringing your own bag. They do not charge you. They’ve also done away with plastic bags which never go away. Yes I can see how wanting to feed people actual food and trying to save the environment would piss you off. It has nothing to with white people either. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Any other race is more than welcome to shop there. They don’t though…they all shop at F’n Wal Mart. Cheap is not better people. Cheap is cheap shit. You get what you pay for.

you make a comment of a violence spree and you can critisize someone else? You have bigger issues than to worry about whole foods.

You are SO dead on here. POSERS!

Your site is the most awesome and fantastic site online. I just wish I had the idea first.

You go!

okay, for all you ignorant racists…..you can claim all day that you are not racists, but anyone who makes remarks with “White People” in the title…..clearly you are racist. Like eating good healthy unpoisoned food has anything to do with white people. Um, try educated people then you can make your point. You uneducated people who fill your kids with Mc Donalds and every other fast food chain – and not to mention all of the non food items you buy at your local grocery store – are simply uneducated about what real food is. An organic food at that. All it means is there are no chemicals in the food. Everytime you buy produce you are filling your families stomachs with pesticides. Pesticides!!! And you are crazy if you think you can wash that stuff off. It’s in the soil. It’s in your foods. As far as grain fed beef….I would rather eat that then eat a cow who has been fed hormones and antibotics ( for they’re illnessess). You are eating these everytime you eat meat…Yum!!! Everything that cow eats..guess what.. you just ate it to. When there is bad meat guess what again….they grind it up with the “good” meat. You’re eating diseased infested animals!! I don’t care how you cook it – it’s still diseased hormone filled antibiotic meat. Which also lets your immune system get used to it and now you have to work 10 times harder to free your body of sickness. Yes, that’s a much better plan than simply shopping for better food and spending more money on it. I guess it’s appealing to buy cheap groceries which they’ve modified so much it’s not even food anymore. They take it and extract any nutritional value the food has and have added stabilizers and artifical shit just so the “food” can be shelf stable. And don’t even get me started on milk and dairy items…..do you have any idea how they get that milK? It’s disgusting. You should always go organic people. You can pay more now or die later…your choice! You should all read the book Skinny Bitch. It’s an easy read and it’s not all boring facts. It will really open your eyes as to what you are putting in your bodies. You either care or you don’t.

Try running this organic nonsense passed the brothers in the rollin 60′s. We’ll see how far you get. You say it’s not a white thing, well maybe it’s a cash thing. Only people with cash get to live in areas where it’s peaceful enough to worry about the chemicals in their food, and not the bullets coming into their house. Pahlease, fool. It’s not about ORGANIC it’s about AUTOMATIC. Tell me Popeye’s chicken ain’t da bawmb. You can take your sookey yakee and your hormone free cows and cram them up your butt. Give me some red beans, rice, fried chicken, biscuits and I am good to go. Follow dat up wit a phat blunt and a 40 of st ides and the night is complete.

But it’s not a white thing. Yeah, OK, whatever. Sucka.

Nothing you said makes sense at all. Thanks for showing your intelligence. First of all, I don’t think I can go back in time to the 60′s. Second of all, I totally agree, fried chicken, biscuits, rice, etc..yes.. ALL AWESOME. Some of my fav foods are listed here. However, I make them from scratch with good natural ( or organic) ingredients. Nothing rocks more than home made natural food. I’m not talking about health food here…Natural and organic does not mean you can’t eat what you like. You don’t have to eat health food..hell, I sure don’t! It’s just better for you. Are you getting that at all? I’m sure you’re not. As far as popeye’s go….no, hate their chicken. Hate their biscuits, hate their entire menu. It’s all modified food cooked in hydrogenated oils that will kill you. Plus it taste like crap. Put poison in your body all day long, I do not care what you eat if you don’t.
You know, it’s fine if you don’t want to eat natural food. you don’t have to. Why the hell do you care if I do though?
Lastly, you know nothing about me to make that cash comment or if I live in a peaceful area. It just so happens I live in EAST AUSTIN right in the middle of the f’n hood. So do not talk to me about bullets flying or homes being robbed. hell, I can’t even put a f’n plant on my front porch with out it getting stolen. The local grocery stores right down the street offer organic and natural choices. Hello Wal Mart and H-E-B. So that’s total bullshit to say it’s only available to rich white people. Last time I checked rich white people do not shop at Wal Mart. So yeah, not a white thing. It’s a hate thing! People love to hate on things they don’t even know about…..just like you!

Skinny Bitch? Yeah, like *models* are the arbiters of healthy eating – typical lunch for them is a carrot stick and a “healthy, organic” American Spirit cigarette.

Let’s face it – you can be healthy or sick on any type of food. The “heart attacks” aren’t necessarily caused by chemicals, but a combination of heredity, exercise or lack of it, cholesterol and blood pressure control, and smoking (in which American Spirits are as bad for you as generic cigarettes).

I am a white person and I hate Whole Foods.

I have been having a good laugh at this site, and enjoying the “it’s funny because it’s true” moments, but I must say now that I hate Whole Foods. I love recycling, love organic food, but the people who run that company are BASTARDS. HEARTLESS BASTARDS.

This site is ignorant. As a person of non-caucasian decent I LOVE Whole Foods. In fact, I shop there almost every day

[...] Bill J. forwarded me one of the links from that site: Stuff White People Like: Whole Foods and Grocery Co-ops. [...]

At the risk of sounding like a white person here, I want to point out that my college town had neither a co-op nor a Whole Foods. That’s why we drove 15 miles for our groceries! What, you wanted us to eat what the people who lived there ate? We don’t pay $30,000 a year for that shit.

Whole Foods is wreaking local farmers markets!!!!! I live in Virginia and am a producer that sells in three farmers markets in the Washington DC area. I have made a great living in the three markets until this year. Recently Whole Foods has started competing markets in their parking lots thus taking market share from me, they also hired a woman named Jean Janson to run the markets and she actually charges a commission for the farmers there! Last week I was told that she was starting a new market the day before my best market, so that will take market share from me and I need to make a choice to either go into more markets and neglect my farm or try to hope that my regular customers will support. In a time of gas prices at almost $4 I cannot afford to drive to more then three markets a week but in order to survive I must find a way. From what I understand the farmers at the Whole Foods markets pay no taxes (it is only 2.5% in VA); this is totally unfair and I cannot see how a supermarket can decide to wreak my business.

First off, this blog is ABSOLUTELY amazing! White people shopping at WF ringing up bills of $500 per visit, genuinely feel good about themselves for saving the planet by consuming organically grown $5/lb tomatoes, fair trade coffee, bok choy and good-for-your-health goji berrys. And its certainly not just white people shopping there – people of all ethnic decents from black to indian shop there, but whites are much more prevalent (and much more wealthier, fair to say). It’s definetely a certain socio-economic class, but let’s face it, whites (along with california??) invented Whole Foods cult. Don’t forget about petfood at WF too…

I do not think that most (white) people shopping at Whole Foods realize that a good chunk of their $$ go NOT to farmers in Guatemala, local organic farms or even in forms of better-than-average-wages to WF employees, instead, straight to company CEO, top level managements and shareholders.

They are so comfortable in their wealth, that they can hardly think out of it…

P.S. G.T.’s Kombucha is greaat :) )

Bullshit. You may want to do your homework. The c.e.o. currently makes $1.00 per year. That’s right…..look it up.

I shop at Whole Foods and I do not spend $500 per visit. Not even in a month. Shows how much you know.

5thKolumnisto on May 16, 2008 at 5:52 am

WF CEO John Mackey made 14 times the average employee pay in *cash compensation* last year (compared to 431 times the average at Fortune 500. Clearly the average employee did not make 1/14 of $1.00 last year.

Mackey will begin “earning” $1.00 and donating future stock options to charity this year. He’s done very well (with the 14x cap) over the years with a good business model and can afford to do so. Just providing some context. (Note: Like any white person, I respect Mackey’s decision.)

$1 in salary….but look at the insider transactions.

Mackey and the other board members don’t get paid in salary as much as they get stock options….

I love how in popular culture it’s so chic to be non-white and it’s so unchic to be white – that’s gotta be something that white people like too, right? This is another example of the cycle that always returns – originally the nobles were unquestionably those who ‘rightfully’ belonged at the top of society, whereas the peons were those who ‘rightfully’ belonged at the bottom. Then came revolution and democracy. Who is praised and who is condemned now? – the ‘common man’ and those born into ‘elite’ families, respectively. It all has to do with those who are in power. In this case, that which is dictated by popular culture is determined by those who have the power within the realm of popular culture (and though these same people generally do not have power outside of this sphere, to the degree that popular culture affects things like politics, for example, in a democracy, these same people are beginning to have power in other realms like politics as well, to that same degree).

Further, this stuff is like palm reading: “White people like vegetables; ha-ha-ha.” “That’s so true. I only eat vegetables once in a while, but those white people – I see them doing it all the time.”
And then the essential, non-white (in terms of content only – not in terms of form), follow-up commentary: “What dumbasses. It’s all about 50-cent burgers, as any non-white fool knows. Who’s lame enough to actually be concerned with his health, not to mention with high quality as a criterion of monetary-value evaluation? Naturally, only a white person.”

The essence of a lot of humor is the in-group out-group dynamic, wherein the ‘underdog’ group consolidates its own identity at the expense of ‘snobby elitists’. And this dynamic works. It can often be pretty funny stuff (particularly to that underdog group), when done properly and skillfully.

while everyone is arguing about trader joe’s v. whole foods, all the in-the-know white people are busy buying made-today tofu at the markets in chinatown and little vietnam. it’s way easier to be the only white person there. :>

I am a person and I think “white” people are fucked up. Whole foods is just another greedy, corporate , pollution causing conglomerate. I love organic food et al but Whole foods needs to bring it down a notch. They are not the goddam holy grail.

Off the Hizzle on May 23, 2008 at 4:23 am

This is incredible! Touched a nerve with this post! I didn’t realize so many people had this kind of loyalty to Whole Foods. Way fiercer response than to, e.g., performance wear or New Balance shoes or bilingual kids. Why is that? I didn’t bother to read all the posts. I hope someone noted that the pesticide scare is way overblown and that if we all started farming organically productivity would bottom out and food prices would rise and the world’s mac and cheese would ALL cost $9 a box and the poor would starve. Maybe even the white people.
I’m feeding a family of four on a $49,000 salary in an east coast city. That’s not poverty, but we were overjoyed to find a cheap grocery store when we moved here: the kind of place that features plantains prominently and is overwhelmed with customers on the day welfare checks are paid. The kind of place where you can get massive chunks of cheddar for $2.49 a pound. Meanwhile I drink my bag-in-a-box wine, my wife makes bread at home because it’s cheaper, and (God forbid) she also clips coupons and looks at the Money Saving Mom blog – because we then get all of our toiletries and half our breakfast cereal for 90% off. We rent movies using RedBox coupon codes – so they’re always free. Our car is a 14 year old Accord.
That’s living in a recession, people. And that’s prioritizing. If you’re a trust fund kid, or you work for a momentarily successful dotcom, fine. If mom wants to stay at home and teach and care for the kids, give up on Whole Foods, the Anthropologie linens, the Mutsy strollers, the new Prius, the tapas bars, the French immersion gradeschool, and the uberhip Zip code. It’s worth it.

Why DO we pay WF prices @ $9 per box o’ mac n cheese when they don’t really add much to the food because it’s sans high fructose and deadly chemicals, most likely an organic product….and the box it comes in was probably made from recycled paper so it’s made of a “weaker” material;

and pay $3 or less for a box o’ mac n cheese that has all types of chemicals, additives, sugars and many other unpronouncable poisons?!
America is full o’ sh*t, that’s why! Who really is in charge of the foods that are on the market? Hmmmm…..Maybe the FDA or the USDA? I don’t know…….

Malcore le Magnifique on May 27, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Go stuff your own fist up your butt. That’s who is really in charge of the food. Idiot. If you’re buying boxed mac and cheese you’re a schmuck to begin with. If you’ve ever payed $9 for a box of mac and cheese you need take yourself out of the gene pool. If you’ve already bread and have small versions of yourself running around, please, move to the mountains, isolate the critters; prevent them from further contaminating human kind. If it’s too late for that, then Damn You, Sir/Madam, for you’ve reduced our collective IQ.

Just a thought.

Funny because it’s true….

I can’t even shop in “regular” grocery stores now. It just doesn’t seem like they sell actual food there.

I just moved to Asheville where we don’t have a Whole Foods. But we have EarthFare and Greenlife Grocery, which are pretty much the same. I may actually like them better.

Whatever, feather brain. I’ve lived a long time eating food from regular stores. My health is great. I get big fat steaks and plenty of beer and I’m not dead yet. So, go shop at your crackpot stores, where everyone walks around with an attitude, like just shopping there makes them special. Blow me. Every time I walk into a whole foods market, or one just like it, trying to get in and get some small thing quickly, it’s like a leap into the Twilight Zone; each of the shoppers trying to prove just how different they are from each other, how much greener they are. Meanwhile, I walked in from a parking lot filled with luxury cars and SUV’s; green my butt, let’s see them haul that single, canvas grocery bag filled with crud home on a bicycle or the bus. No, I think they much prefer their Lexus or Range Rover. Pft. They’re all lunatics playing make believe, and shopping at a place some have referred to as the Walmart of grocery stores. Hey, wannabe, slide on over to a local farmer’s market why don’t you? Nah, there might be a dirt parking lot and you don’t want dust on yer Range Rover.

Okay here is what I find absolutely hilarious about people who shop at WF. They go in and buy all organic, hormone free, pesticide free fruits, vegetables and meats and then fill the back of their gas guzzling huge-mongo SUV’s with their expensive healthy guilt free groceries and drive off all by themselves. The parking lot at WF is full of gas guzzling SUV’s. Next time you drive by one check it out. Give me a freaking break!

And for the record, organic fruits and vegetables DO taste BETTER than the un-organic. That’s why I planted my own garden this year.

Great blog by the way, even if I am white.

Peace out.

Whenever I go to Whole Foods, I encounter lots of Asians, Indians and Africans. They all seem to love the place. It’s just okay to poke fun at “stupid white folks”, right? Are white folks buying all that organic okra and daikon? Methinks not. Whole Foods sucks. Trader Joes rules.

These posts are so funny! Some defend whole foods to death while others totally ripping on them, its awesome! i worked at whole foods for 14 years, and yes they are complete capitalists & hypocrites saying they save the world from chemicals and plastic while killing off small farmers in favor of farmers willing to bend over and be enslaved by wfm(whole foods market) and being a “profile farmer”. they don’t give a damn about anything or anyone except maximizing profits. i know, it was my job to make sure that happened. we stopped accepting products from small farmers in favor of larger farmers who could follow our guidelines and keep us in supply. the look on local small farmers when i had to tell them we were stopping buying their products because the huge wealthy farmer they are in competition with won the exclusive selling rights, was heart breaking. and the guy that mentioned john mackey taking a $1 a year salary….guess what? he’s a multimillionaire that leaves for months at a time for sabbaticals and the reason he’s so wealthy is because he and the rest of the “E-team” (the executive leaders) regularly gave themselves tens of thousands of stock option shares, making themselves millionaires meanwhile throwing us middle managers a few hundred shares. its like getting kicked in the face. it was my job to make sure we make the right amount of excessive and insane amount of money off everything, no matter how crappy it tastes. and really, the truth is eventually the earth will go into another ice age, get hit by another meteor, or have an atmospheric breakdown and it won’t matter about organic vs nonorganic or plastic vs paper anymore anyway.
and fyi…i shop at trader joes (its cheaper than wfm and btw, 2 buck chuck sucks!) and our local farmers markets because i really actually believe in supporting my local farmers, not the huge corporate conglomerate farms that wfm pays off.

so… is this meant to be offensive? because it is…

WhiteyWhiteWhite on July 9, 2009 at 5:36 pm

Seriously? You are offended by this? Hahaha… then what are you doing reading “Stuff white people like”? Get a sense of humor

What the hell is this supposed to be? It could be done in a funny, clever, tongue-in-cheek way but it’s not. I don’t shop at Whole Foods to feel better about my wasteful white-person ways, I shop at Whole Foods because, at the risk of sounding crunchy granola and losing all credibility, it encompasses a lifestyle that includes recycling, donating to green energy, and teaching my son to take care of the only Earth he has to live on. I shop at Whole Foods because I don’t like the taste of pesticides on my strawberries and spinach. I don’t like radioactive-looking Kraft macaroni and cheese. I don’t want my son to grow up on overprocessed crap and not be able to resist the call of trans fat like my entire family.

The people you should be directing this drivel at are the people that pull their Hummers and Suburbans into the parking lot of Whole Foods, or the corporate lawyers who stop there on their lunch break, not at us silly white people as a whole.

Shopping at Whole Foods has more to do with STATUS than anything else.

Not a white girl on July 28, 2008 at 6:56 pm

It may be a status thing to people who go in for that kind of thing but to others like me it’s a good place to get vegetarian food & yes it’s expensive but better than eating over processed crap from the regular grocery store. Eating good vegetarian food is worth the extra cost.

I love this..but to gain better knowledge check out the following sites http://www.pbs.org/itvs/homecoming/history.html

I am quite sure the title was not made to offend, but people are senstive. Besides no white man or woman wants to know that their ancestors would not have made it in the US without the breast feeding of a black woman.

So in essence because the white ancetor took milk from a black womans breast, they did say one percent right? They makes us all black/white whatever, its just the pigmentation of the skin.

Besides, they show that whites where an experiment of the blacks with all that put one child in a dark cave in the winter thing. So much information on the web.

Anyway, I think it is cute – we all as individuals want something of our own to be acknowledge. Well done! Considering my mother has a veggie garden, and a farm (with all the works) outside the city limits (40 acres) and we had a home in the city. We had no choice but to eat healthy.

Today, I am 40 and still get id for liquor. But hey, we all should eat healthy – maybe our way of eating healthy will change they way US waste. You children are all the future. Stop letting them take advantage just because you want to party and worry about it when you get older. I love Whole Foods, no other place I would rather shop, but Walmart, Krogers, Randalls, Piggly Wiggly, Foodarama – all of them need to be accountable and have the same standard as Whole Foods, then they prices will go down because it is no longer a luxury to be healthy – IT IS A WAY OF LIFE. IT IS YOUR RIGHT AS INDIVIDUALS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THE HEALTHY QUALITY OF LIFE NO MATTER WHAT YOU MAKE OR COLOR OF SKIN.

WORK ON CHANGING THINGS FOR THE BETTER. I LOVE MY WHITE MEN JUST AS MUCH AS I LOVE MY BLACK MEN.

[...] I found myself at Whole Foods, hankerin’ for a sandwich. And luckily, I found a jumbo sized panini staring back at me [...]

I love people that are on the completely organic kick, yet need tons of supplements to offset the losses over modern foods….I do buy organic milk though as the extremely long shelf life comes in very happy for single folk. :P

The nickname for Whole Foods where I live is Whole Paycheck. I’ll take Trader Joe’s. Well, that’s a relief. Maybe I am really white.

Once again, these “white people” are specifically of the US kind. A Dane, I lived in Boston for a year and met far too many of these sorts of pretentious (off-)white people. I have to say though, that I also bought organic food even though it was bought overpriced from co-ops polluted by incense, smelly soaps, and holier-than-thous. This was because “normal” supermarket ingredients were making me feel pretty bad. I mean, milk is milk, cheese is cheese, and bread is bread, not weird rubbery (or at least rubber-filled) products. It all tasted like crap too. I still feel really sorry for all those Americans who only know not-quite-food, and all the other out-of-touch stuff. I’m guessing, though, that things (food, or reality in general) are probably better in other parts of the US, like the midwest, say. In those parts, this SWPL blog might not be all that precise either (hopefully).

i just wrote a post on whole foods, that place drives me crazy. i am glad it’s not just me that seems to only see single people (on the prowl) and yes it is a nightmare for my kids on so many levels.

great post.

CaliforniaGirl on July 25, 2008 at 8:55 pm

This is hilarious. I don’t set foot in Whole Paycheck, but grew up in San Francisco and every week our family shopped at the Farmers’ Market. I am glad to see so many local farm stands and buy local. Too bad it is mostly white folks…. at least in SF efforts are being made to bring fresh produce markets to non-white neighborhoods. What about Trader Joe’s and Costco and Peets? White folks here too.

supeirorsitsue on July 27, 2008 at 12:25 pm

As a white guy, I went to a Whole Foods once. Frankly, I don’t care much for the people that shop there. Especially the minority that tried to run me over when backing into the parking space (not African-American). That aside, the food was way over priced.

To the post, I have trouble with posts that have numerous mis-spellings and bad grammar. Pretty much like ordering off of a menu with too many commas and no need for semi-colons.

I shop at Whole Foods when I need no more than two items, say an onion and milk. It’s a total rip-off, and I really can’t stand the pretentiousness of it all though often ALL the customers are thin and attractive. But do you want to spend $40 or $50 making tabbouleh for dinner? I don’t; that’s why I shop at ethnic markets where the produce is fresh and cheap. You can’t beat 99 cents for an entire bunch of mint.

Verne Voelker on August 3, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Yes, it’s expensive. I have never purchased any of the meat but I can tell by looking at it that it is far better than the meat I buy at supermarkets because that’s what I can afford. If there are those who can afford to eat like that, why shouldn’t they do so? Sometimes I treat myself to the baked goods, the bread and the prepared soups. I don’t look down my nose at Whole Food’s customers. That’s reverse snobbery.

Kimbelievable on August 3, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Thanks Mr. white guy. For posting this very informative blog about white people. After reading this blog I’ve learned far more than I ever thought possible about white people. You have broadened my horizons. And the comments have given me greater insight as well. I’ve just arrived home from my once every other day visit to Whole Foods and I got to tell ya’– whoa! I had a more dandy time than normal. I felt very culturally aware. For instance who would have known there are people out there who are HOSTILE against Whole Foods? I mean yeah. It’s pricey; but, I buy what I can afford. And yeah. I do marvel a bit at the guy in front of me who clocks a $500. total at the register. I say to myself or maybe out loud… “Got to be wealthy ta’ eat healthy” but, I don’t curse him. I did notice that a majority of vehicles parked in the Whole Foods lot were of the whooping eight cylinders SUV, luxury type variety. Now that you have helped me better understand ((whispering)) “the whites.” I am not nearly as annoyed and bothered by their ways. THANKS! Conversely, my attitude was WAY BETTER this trip. You have helped make this world a better place by shedding light on what has been shrouded to many non-whites. (MANY black folk “just don’t get it” regarding the odd things white people do i.e. “Stuff White People Like”), but now I am truly beginning to “get it.”
Cheers to this fine blogger lad who has kindly taken time to explain WHY white people do the “odd” stuff they do.

90% of the people that wrote this blog or responded are NO DOUBT, OVERWEIGHT and so is their family. These people roll through the dirty aisles at Stop and Shop with 4 kids hanging off the cart grabbing pesticide ridden fruit and vegetables that sit on the shelves for long past their due date (if they even grab fruit!). Then make their way over to the deli for hormone fed turkey and ham (which has sat in the glass case for oh….2 weeks longer than it should collecting that slime that only lunch meat that’s fed hormones can attract). Gotta get some bread for this lunch meat so I’ll grab some WHITE Wonder Bread which is made with Trans Fats and High Fructose Corn Syrup…and get some Juicy Juice for the kids (little sugar won’t harm them). Then the screaming kids are yelling “Mommy, Mommy I want some fruit roll-ups and cookies.” So naturally Mom grabs some Fruit roll ups and Chewy Chips Ahoy without looking at the label containing High Fructose Corn Syrup and in the system of our kids it goes (hmm I wonder why 65% of all American children are overweight). Then a couple of frozen pizzas later Mom and kids are headed home. The frozen pizza goes in the oven, the kids head over to the computer eating a fruit roll up and cookie and play video games for 4 hours (because exercise is out of the question, why go OUTSIDE?!) before crashing on a sugar high and Mom is left with a half eaten frozen pizza and a glass of wine. This country is going to shit. Whole Foods is a fraction of what’s RIGHT in getting our country back to health.

I am not overweight nor is anyone in my family, and I think the Whole Foods phenomenon is mostly a bunch of crap. A person can join a food co-op, go to farmer’s or ethnic markets, Costco, Trader Joe’s, start a kitchen garden, on and on. And yes, even go to the supermarket. Whole Foods is overpriced because that is how they maintain the perceived value of their products and ensure that only a select group can afford to shop there.

And you are wrong; it is more expensive to eat badly than to eat well. If you can roast an $8 organic chicken from TJ’s, two people can eat for 2 nights for 2 dollars each. A lot of people are just too lazy to eat well and have been brainwashed by slick advertising.

Whoa there- no one at the Whole is “ensuring that a select group can shop there”. It IS more costly to eat processed shit all the time than to go to a Whole Foods (co-op, org. grocer, neighborhood store, Trader Joe’s, etc.) and shop the perimeter. The “over-priced” misconception probably comes from the prepared foods, and the fact that most of the stores also sell specialty items like wine, good cheese, and natural body care. If you’re looking to feed your family (even if you have food stamps!), and you’re willing to cook a few meals rather than microwave frozen foods and open a box of something, it’s WAY cheaper to go natural.

Whoa…if eating vegan and shopping at Whole Foods causes people to spew Workout101′s kind of bitter, vile, hateful ranting, get me to a McDonald’s, STAT!

1. Organic foods DO still have pesticides, even more toxic than the non-organic variety.

2. No hormones are approved for use in poultry.

3. Remember, an organic world only supports 4.3 billion people, our world has 6.5 billion people.

4. You are a neo-pagan Earth-mother-goddess worshiping hippie.

“3. Remember, an organic world only supports 4.3 billion people, our world has 6.5 billion people.”

No shit. The point is that there wouldn’t *BE* 6.5 billion people in the world if cheap mass-produced unhealthy food never came about.

Here’s another thing white people love: population control.

1. Organic foods DO still have pesticides, even more toxic than the non-organic variety.

No. They do not have chemical pesticides. Check USDA standards. the only pesticides Organics permit are natural pesticides like insects. Last time I checked, ladybugs and spiders where never more toxic than chemical pesticides manufactured from post WWII poison creators.

Really lady you need to chill the _ _ _ _ out, and god help you if you are a guy. I eat organic and use flaxseed oil, that is the point IT IS FREAKIN FUNNY. Go to a different website like liberal love or something!!!

Oh my! So rude, but so right!

a cashier at whole foods on December 13, 2008 at 9:47 pm

I think this was a great post. I agree

Wow, Workout, that was the whitest diatribe I’ve ever read, not to mention one of the most pretentious! I know it’s difficult for yuppie scumbags like yourself to understand, but some people, unfortunately and often due to circumstances beyond their control, can only afford to feed their families by shopping at Stop & Shop. Whole Foods has NOTHING to do with “getting our country back to health(?).” It’s a CORPORATION that has found a very profitable niche: selling overpriced food to snobs like yourself. It’s all marketing.

Whole Foods is over priced. Half the stuff that is organic, is not. Just a store that sucks people in so they think they are eating healthy and spend all their money on crap you can get from any grocery store. Just be smart about what you eat. Everything is going to have pesticides or hormones at least a little. Just think, if there were a nuclear bomb the only thing left to eat would be twinkies and there is no nutritional value in those! So much for organic whole food :)

i actually work at a whole foods and i’ll tell you that everything that is sold there is either certified USDA organic, or all natural (hasn’t been certified by a USDA worker, but for all intensive purposes is organic), which means there are absolutely no pestacides, hormones, artificial dyes or anything else that is engineered in any of their products. while i do agree that the prices are pretty high, the store actually does do everything possible to retain organic characteristics in groceries. the fact that there is basically little to no difference between organic and all natural besides price is understandably frustrating, but don’t attack whole foods on something you don’t comprehend or know.

it’s ‘for all intents and purposes’

grammar-white person-i know :)

This entire site is riddled with poor grammar and incorrect spelling. How is anyone supposed to take it seriously?

“Whole Foods has replaces churches and cathedrals as the most important and relevant buildings in the community.”

That is nuts.

I’m in college with a grocery budget of $15-$20 per week, and naively decided to try to be an environmentally conscious white person. I skipped into the local organic food co-op and came out with my food for the week: bread, broth, a gallon of milk, and some carrots.

After losing an unhealthy amount of weight, I threw the towel in and went to Big Y. One day I hope to run a writer’s workshop from a house on Cape Cod and go to Whole Foods every couple days for sushi.

Ok people look,

I work at Whole Foods too as a customer service supervisor. I’m white, I’m not rich by any stretch of the imagination, and I’m one of the biggest granola head, goji berry eating, kombucha drinking freaks out there. I do a lot of my shopping at the store, BUT I’ll have you know that a lot of us here go to the farmer’s markets, other local organic/ all natural stores etc… I recycle, I drive a small car, and I buy organic clothes. It’s all about budget, community, and priorities. Whole foods encourages buying local and in fact our particular store is working on putting together a farmer’s market right in our own parking lot. If you think we’re expensive it’s probably because you’re buying all the pretty, gimmicky stuff and wine and supplements and high end body care all at once and completely ignoring the huge line of 365 value products. We have coupons and specials that I don’t think people notice as well – come to the service desk and ask. I really don’t get why people think we’re more expenisive. We have a ton of products that I compare prices on when I’m shopping different places, and it’s very competitive. Our return policy is phenomenal.

One of the biggest points that people miss is why organic and fair trade items tend to be more expensive. Do you think people should be paid fairly for their products and work? Well a lot of big name companies don’t really think so. They rip off their vendors, suppliers, and employees creating holes in the economic sytem. They detroy the economies of small towns and local buisnesses, all for the sake of having the greatest profits and the lowest prices. If you’re paying more for something, be it a shirt from American Apparel, or fair trade tea from The Republic of Tea, think about why that item is more expensive. Who is suffering or succeeding based on our purchases?

And one last point, this is the most enjoyable job I’ve ever had. I love the people, the customers, the environment, the products etc… It’s the only job where I have been treated like a human and not some robot or rat in a cage. I mean, we’re not perfect cause nobody’s perfect. But just research us – did you know that we purchase wind power credits to offset the energy we use at all of our stores and distribution centers? What about our 5% days, where we donate that percentage of our sales to a local charity? I could go on and on about more programs we have but this post is already way too long. So, I hope this helps you understand that there are a lot of things that go on that you won’t necessarily see from the outside.

one last thing – it’s racist to assume that all white people have money, or that other races don’t, or that other races don’t strive to support environmentalism, organic farming or other related industries.

Josh,
Thank you for responding to this “Stuff about white people”
this is just nonsense. The writer of this book obviously has
never been to Whole Foods in Cambridge where ethnic
diversity abounds. I too get my produce at an organic
farm and it is great to know where your food comes from
and that it was harvested that day. You can meet the
chickens that lay your eggs! Ha Ha, actually I enjoy the farm and the farmers as well. When the season is over I
will be back at Whole Foods more often. Debi

That’s funny. I work at Trader Joe’s and I know for a fact that our private label is, 99% of the time, cheaper than whole foods’ label. Keep working hard to get that good food cheap in the hands of the people that deserve it.

I will say though, upper middle class white people love Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. They think they are shopping at a really upper-class store and that makes them special.
But guess what?
About 1/6 of our customers use some assistance (EBT, or better known as FOOD STAMPS) to buy their groceries. Anyone can shop there. You are not privaledged to shop at Trader Joe’s. Or whole foods for that matter.

a cashier at whole foods on December 13, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Does Trader Joes have the SAME list of ingredients that whole foods will not allow in their products?

why do people come here and leave serious comments?

i work at whole foods and thought this was hilarious. don’t think we can’t all laugh at ourselves a little. i mean don’t get me wrong, i can’t stand it when some douchebag comes up to me and says “hey do you know what we call this place? whole paycheck!” and then they laugh really hard like they’re the first asshole to ever come up with that. yes. you are SOOOOOO clever. i haven’t heard that at least a million times.

however, it is pretty astounding how many of our customers think they are “better” or something just because they shop with us. currently we have the FEED bags for sale. they’re $30 reusable shopping bags and all the proceeds go towards feeding hungry children. each bag feeds 100 CHILDREN. (feedprojects.org) i work in customer service so these bags are right next to the desk. i had one woman come up, briefly read the info sitting next to them and say, “100 meals? well that doesn’t seem like it would go very far” to which my boss snappily replied “well it’s more than they had”. she then laughed a nervous laugh and said “oh well i’ve already spent about $300 today. maybe next time” and i’m sure proceeded to go out to her giant excursion or some other horrible SUV.

i love my customers and most of them are nice, hardworking people like myself, but some of them are ridiculous. to them it is a status thing and they want to look like their fave celebs in US Weekly carrying their reusable totes. just know this pretentious fucks: you look stupid. you’re not better than me cause i work here and you’re not better than the person behind you using EBT. so get over yourself.

Do you work at the Whole Foods in Plano? :)

GLAD I READ THIS BLOG DID NOT REALIZE WHOLE FOODS WAS A WHITE THING ALTHOUGH IT WAS A WHITE PERSON WHO TOLD ME THE NEXT TIME I AM IN NASHVILLE, OR ST. LOUIS I HAVE TO GO TO WHOLE FOODS. I WILL NOY GO IT WOULD SCAR ME TO BE IN A TOWN WITH A LARGE MINORITY POPULATION AND SEE ONLY WEALTHY SUV MERCEDES BMW DRIVING WHITE FOLKS SHOPPING AT A STORE.

THIS BLOG WAS VERY INTERESTING I LEARNED SOMETHING I DID NOT KNOW BEFORE I CLICKED ON TO THIS WEB SITE.

This entire thing is rasict and silly. It must have been written by a white teenager.
My Whole Foods in Silver Spring, MD has LOTS of people of color shopping in it. Just because we’re colorful does not mean we have to eat nasty, greasy, pork laden foods with no nutritive value.
You should get the best value for your money. My money is green and spends very well in nice places. I’ve never been told that it is unacceptable due to the brownness of my skin. I shop Whole Foods, Moms, Harris Teeter and Trader Joes. They’re clean, bright, and they treat you like a paying customer.
You have to decide what you can afford and how many chemicals you want to ingest and shop accordingly.
Hey, it’s a free country and if you want to keep eating noodles from a styrofoam carton, nuked in a microwave, that’s your business; or frozen “what’s in that?” offerings, OK. But don’t knock the rest of us who prefer a more civilized approach to consumables!
I do not eat all organic. I don’t drinks sodas, eat “refined” products or white bread, meats with nitrites/nitrates, chicken from chicken factories, pork from anywhere nor products cooked with their fat, sugar laden cereals and regular, overprocessed milk and diary products. So when I shop I want a choice and at least these stores offer that.
Thank you very much!

It’s satire. Stop crying. Please.

It’s 1.) Overpriced. 2.) Most of the time you can get the same stuff at your regular grocery store, if they’re “trendy” enough to have an organic section. 3.) The people that shop there are fucking snobs and are always in your way and walk around like they’re oh so important because they shop at Whole Foods and finally, the meats department pisses me off because half of it is fake meat. Seriously. If you want a goddamn bratwurst, burger, steak or whatever…kill the fucking animal and get it. Don’t create it out of something that looks like shit dyed white.

hey i work there and i dont belive in there products. most of our products are priced 40 to 80% over what we buy it for. the benifits suck. they basically pay 80% u can generally get better insurance from a factory job. 401k they dont even match until u have been there for three years and then u have stock options. big deal. there stock which is still good is not what it used tobe. i know the economy is slowing but i sit in on alot of confrence calls and even some of regional support even admit that alot of our competition have the same product for a cheaper pricer. whwn our customers ask what the diffrence between our products and there is we tell them ours is certified organic or natural no additives or preservaitives. that is what we are armed with. this does not mean the other product is bad it just means u are paying for an added sticker. a couple of other things look at the people they hire. not the boss but the regular help the box boys cashiers u can tell these people do drugs thats why they do not drug test. we have people coming in high all the time here in tulsa. nothing is done about it. its a running joke. we have drug deals going on in the parking lot by some of the employees. i have not seen this personally but u walk up on conversations. save ur money goto trader joes, central market, sams, reasors. adam there is one thing u are wrong on. at least here in tulsa the meat is real. belive it or not. even in the sausages. the only reason i know this is because i used to work in the meat department.

Wow Thomas if you feel that Wholefoods is so unethical and “sucks ass”, why are you there working? It seems like you would want to get a factory job and have better benefits. I think that those who shop there do it not only for the product but the the feeling of supporting a company that shows involvement in the global aspect of food and it’s producers, I don’t think that the getting the best price is the main reason customers shop at Whole Foods. I think you should not try and decide what values others place on their food or where they get it. Maybe what sucks is you not moving on and not working at a place that you don’t believe in their CORE values. Must suck for you, maybe you could get a job at a factory.

i dont work there anymore! i do work at a factory now. it is more fullfilling. at least i dont have to listen to self rightious people such as yourself trying to justify highprices and terrible customer service. once more when i worked there it was one of the more wasteful places i had worked at.next time you go in there ask a regular employee what there core values are most of them will not know.

I very much want to have Whole Foods a presence in my forthcoming edition of the Guardian magazing here on Maui. I know you are coming to town in ’09 and we are working on the 09 edition of the Guardian. We’re doing a center spread feature on “The Greening of Our Island” and you are a perfect fit.

Can someone please contact me to discuss this?

Whole Foods is way over priced, just how white people like it. I’m asian, so I would never shop there. haha

People who shop at Whole Foods are pretentious pricks. I will never step foot in there again. Well maybe once just to run them all down with a shopping cart.

Anyone who would place all Whole Foods shoppers into a stereotype as “pretentious pricks” is undoubtedly a pretentious cunt herself. What does Ms. Bittermelon have against Whole Foods? Who knows? Who cares? BTW, Whole Foods has an assortment of fiber supplements if you’d like to loosen that stool blocking the energy flow out of your ass.

I like whole foods, yes it’s overpriced, but they are the only ones in the city (of New Orleans) that I am aware of, that have a meat counter where I can chose my meat. One of the reasons why white folks shop at whole foods is because these stores are in predominately white neighborhoods. We have two in the New Orleans metro area.

has anyone ever heard of WAL*MART!!! Hello people??!!!

Ok, I admit it…I LOVE Whole Foods! Hate their prices but love the smells, the products, etc… Apparently just like all white folk. And when I had the money, I would go to Whole Foods. Otherwise it was the organic section of Kroger!
Now I live in a college town that doesn’t have Whole Foods. Gasp! But they have a Co-op that’s even more expensive than Whole Foods. So I go there some but not as much as I’d like. This is the funniest site I’ve ever seen that lovingly makes fun of white people! And I’m so white! Love you!!!!!

I actually went to Whole Foods for the first time today. I don’t know why (perhaps because mine is in a college town or because it’s across the street from Trader Joe’s?) but the stuff there wasn’t really expensive compared to other places I’ve seen. Some of the other customers kind of grunted at me or ignored me when I said excuse me to get around them, but I found the staff polite and helpful.

“Whole Foods and Grocery Co-ops” In my white dreams! They don’t have those on the SW side of Chicago.

[...] became a little concerned when we realized Sheen is in league with Whole Paycheck, the white people-approved grocery store chain best known for crushing smaller competition, poisoning people with faux-organic [...]

Oh please (at least in the L.A area) lotsa ethnicities shop there. Yeah it is kinda expensive but depending on what you want to eat, price is not an issue.

If I go back to a regular supermarket I am kinda apalled at the produce section-you don’t know where it all came from or how far it was shipped-but that’s a typical corporation for you-don’t question anything, just buy our products and give us the money.

Jl, you are right about the quality of food. This summer, while at a music festival in upstate NY, we met an organic farm owner who told us his small 300 acre farm sells produce , locally to Whole Foods. It was cool to hear that, especially since we shop at the Ridgewood, NJ store. Furthermore, to respond to meeting people at WF, my husband undoughtedly swears that the women who shop at WH, are much HOTTER then those that shop at the other grocery chains. I think he’s probably right. They are fit, health conscious, and recyclers-bearing their recycable, re-usable bags. I like to shop there for the vegetarian, hard-to-find stuff, but I have to admit that I also eat Lucky Charms for breakfast sometimes, that I bought at the A&P.

What a stupid website. White people (like all the other colors) like a variety of things. I own a food company and spend hours upon hours at Whole Foods doing demos. While there are plenty of whites at WF, I run into many blacks, asians, and latinos. I meet peole from all over the world as well.

Don’t really understand satire, do you?

I’m going out on a limb here, does anyone remember learning to spell, punctuate or capitalize?

We don’t care…we don’t judge people on grammer. What are you, like 90 years old?

No but we do judge them on grammar. Baka!

i think its funny that people can really get offended by this (another thing white people love). i mean really you all know pretty much everything on this website is true. He’s not being offensive, he’s just telling the truth. i think its really funny because if you read the comments they almost all involve things that white people love. grammar, being offended, liking other ethnicity’s. i just find that all you’re all doing is proving him right and backing him up. HAHAHAHA!

*ethinicities dumbass

don’t forget about the reusable grocery bags! especially the ones made from natural/recycled fibers. they’re key to bring home all of your organic foods!

The only reason to use these places, yet a very compelling reason:

-it’s not WalMart
-You don’t have to wait in line behind some dumbass paying with a NSF check
-It’s like going to the nicer movie theater: Sure the movie is the same, but paying a little more not to be near some crack whore with TB is somehow worth it.
-There’s less old people.
-Usually the women are hotter.
-Usually the clerks speak english.
Other than that…I guess it’s all the same.

It’s called Snob Appeal, Kopachi, and you — being a snob –have obviously bought into it, which is pathetic. Whole Foods has done a masterful job of playing to white people’s pretensions.

Your life is pathetic lmaozzz

Ever see a garden behind a Whole Foods? No, but there are plenty of WF tractor trailers on the highways. What a farce…

sure….a white guy uses white people as a title, you get offended…explain the NAACP, BLack History Month, etc…

double standards suck

There is a total double standard. Imagine having a network called “White Entertainment Television” instead of “Black Entertainment Television”. Other then the acronym being ridiculous, people would totally be offended yet no one is offended by B.E.T.

Hey Jennifer! Did it ever occur to you that BET was started to help increase the entertainment opportunites for blacks. I mean, for years blacks had a VERY hard time trying to even get a foot in the door. Also, there are several WETs (white entertainment television) statations; they are CBS (colorless broadcasting system), NBC (nothing but caucaisuns) , and finally ABC (anything but colored). And there you have it, you guys have YOUR OWN! Also, in addition, I would just like to say that white people have a million man march every single day-its called Congress.

i just have to say that i am white and i think people who say that there is a double standard are ridiculous. first of all, whites are priveledged and its obvious. they get higher wages, don’t get racially profiled, and don’t have to deal with being treated as a minority. blacks are not only mistreated and looked down upon by plenty of racist people, but they have been mistreted in this country since the beginning. giving them a television channel, a black history month, etc. is well deserved considering everything they have had to go through and continue to go through.

So Nicole, tell me again why we can’t have WET then? Let go of the white guilt, Sweetie.

We do have a WET…its called CMT.

Listen up! Whole Foods has been surpassed! We have one in San Antonio, and I visit it on occcasion. (It reminds me of the 20 years in which I lived in Northern California. Sort of a little whiff of Palo Alto: folks in birkenstocks, 24-pocket hiking shorts, “acceptable” washed-out T-shrts . . . the works.)

But now there is an even Whiter place to shop. HEB, the ONLY supermarket in chain in South Texas has opened The Central Market. (I believe they have done this to assuage their conscience about being a total monopoly, which would naturally leave white people aghast.) The attractions of the Central Market are significant enough to force white people to set aside any socio-economic distaste.

Central Market appears on the outside like any other HEB supermarket—-except for the Hummers and Beamers in the parking lot.

Inside you’ll find a collection of natural, organic, imported, and socially correct foods—-all at incredibly high prices.

You’ll find at least 500 kinds of cheese (an estimate–my wife stopped counting at about 300), a wine collection to equal anything ini the Napa or Sonoma Valley area, artisan bread (you can watch the little artisans), a deli counter that measures about 200 linear feet arranged in a square, and meats that probably don’t offend even vegans, since it’s doubtful many can afford the price per pound.

One critical difference is this: the stuff carried at any normal HEB supermarket, such as soap, Captain Crunch, paper towels, ground round, bologna, and Campbell’s soups CANNOT BE FOUND anywhere here. This small but critical difference makes it a hsotile climate for non-white, who usually have larger families and require low prices.

You see, if you go to Whole Foods, you truly do find folks of every ethnicity. Yes, the flapping of birkenstocks predominates, but there are always a few Hispanic, Black American, Asian, and Texas redneck white folks. Not so at HEB Central Market. The marketing genius who engineered this was careful to exclude items that might attract any of these not-truly-white-people.

Want to buy a 25-pound bag of dog food for your 3 hunting dogs? Not here you won’t. How about the bargain package of 30 tortillas? Nope! Bulk dried pinto beans? No way.

So, even the whitest of white people are now making two stops every Saturday. One at the Central Market, for the exotic makings for a prino dinner party. And then off to the local garden-variety HEB to buy paper towels and dish detergent. An inconvenience, but being white is never easy.

For those of you in other parts of TX, I beleive they have at least one of these Central Markets in Dallas and one in Houston. check it out and see if you agree with me.

Personally, when I bought a few items, I felt screwed. The imported Swiss cheese that I thought I was treating myself to turned out to taste exactly like the stuff I buy for one-third the price at my local market. I guess I don’t have the fine taste required to be truly white.

I do drive through the occasional Whole Foods parking lot to count the Priuses and check out the latest screeds from the bumper sticker set, but I wouldn’t be caught dead inside one. Once in a while I have some fun with my handy dandy laundry marker.

I’ll stick with this great Korean market in West Houston that sells better veggies for what my wife claims are 1/4 the price.

As for Central Market, thank God I never travel inside Loop 610.

Fun fact: Whole Foods probably has less organic produce by FAR than your local Farmer’s Market. Let alone local produce from small farmers, which it tries to pretend it supports, but really can’t to any large extent, being a national chain.

Another fun fact: your local Flea Market probably has a Farmer’s Market too. And it will probably be cheaper. ;)

a cashier at whole foods on December 13, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Here in CO the whole foods I work at gets some outrageously large amount of produce from local farmers…where is your logic? It would be impossible to transport organic produce across the country. Might want to check on USDA organic standards.

Yeah I definitely have to agree with you. I was looking at the whole foods website when I found this blog and they don’t have any growers in Florida but have several stores here.
farmers market and flea markets are the way to go and sooooo much cheaper.

I think you used the word “police”, when you meant “policy.”

But that’s okay. As you know, us white folks enjoy fixing other people’s grammar. It makes us feel superior, and allows us to use our liberal arts degrees in the real world.

I didn’t actually have to give my kids the carab.

The word ‘carob’ alone turned them off.

I will say though that I ate many salads with lots’o weird stuff while I was pregnant from markets such as mentioned and I am white! Funny!

I will admit the one thing that I do like about Whole Foods and do not find particularly controversial, is probably also the real reason the prices are so high in there – they actually pay their employees really, really well. As in, even the lowest employees make over $13 an hour.

Yeah, I know. I would kill for a job like that in this economy!

a cashier at whole foods on December 13, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I work at whole foods in CO. Lowest entry position starts at $9

We don’t have a Whole Foods on the Big Island, but we do have lots of natural food stores, or health food stores if that’s what you want to call them.

Just wanted to say OPEN your mind. I was diagnosed with fibromyalsia, which really just means massive pain that never goes away. By avoiding processed and chemicalized foods, I live a GREAT life. No kidding! My daughter would be considered ADHD if I didn’t feel her whole food, instead of the pretend cheap food yall seem to be comfortable eating.

Pay now, or pay later. It is actually affordable medical care. Good luck with drugs and surgery!

How do artificial preservatives & additives have anything to do with such varied, hereditary medical conditions such as ADHD and fibromyalgia?

Most people are just ignorant of the basic chemistry of food and automatically think artificial = bad

“How do artificial preservatives & additives have anything to do with such varied, hereditary medical conditions such as ADHD and fibromyalgia?

Wrong. You need to read up a little more on the current state of food science and agriculture (a good source for this – most particularly because it cites particular studies in its footnotes on the page where each study is mentioned, making it a lot easier to verify – appears to be the book “In Defense of Food”, which I found at my local library so you should be able to find it at your local branch as well if you don’t want to shell out money for it).

Basically, modern industrial farming practices (read: those that became popular after the industrial revolution and more so after World War II) have royally screwed up the nutritional qualities of what produce we do eat whole, and refining processes generally rob the majority of what’s in our diet of the majority of its natural nutrients – not to mention the evidence that “fortifying” processed foods (like white rice or whatever, let alone snack cakes) isn’t nearly as nutritionally effective as eating say, carrots or apples which haven’t undergone much processing beyond cooking.

Why? Probably because the body was never meant to actually absorb nutrients that way, but rather, it evolved (or was created, whatever) to make use of everything out of a natural fruit or veggie or meat that it can – the processes it uses to digest and absorb food are remarkably versatile (diets that peoples have historically thrived on range from the sort-of-vegan to the fish-and-rice-based and even an all-meat-milk-and-blood diet)… but those processes simply aren’t meant for a diet that’s in fact primarily composed of heavily-processed (and nutritionally vapid) wheat, soy and corn syrup, which are all refined to and tinkered with to the point of losing most of their natural nutritional value, and yet happen to be the bases for most of today’s highly processed or refined foods. In fact, we’re constantly discovering new nutritional components (vitamins, essential oils, antioxidents, all of them relatively recent discoveries, and all of those discoveries still constantly being added to with more knowledge of their functions and almost worryingly complex interactions) … so there’s almost no telling what we’re nutritionally robbing ourselves of by basing our diet off of processed foods.

Refined foods such as white flour and white rice last longer and often are preferred for their color and taste – the problem being that refining it to the point of turning it bleached white actually takes the vast majority of the nutritional value out; sadly, the lack of nutritional value in fact makes it less vulnerable to microbes and other pests that like to eat our food, which is why it lasts longer in the first place.

On top of this, the focus on “high yield” plants has moved us away from “high nutrition” plants; increased use of chemical pesticides means plants produce smaller amounts of highly beneficial things like antioxidents and phytochemicals (both anti-cancer agents, with at least one also connected to reducing inflammation, meaning it aids against not just cancer but also things like arthritis), since they don’t have to struggle to thrive; and the commonly-used NPK fertilizers are the plant equivalent of fast food – they don’t provide a number of key nutrients that are usually gained from the soil, and they also decrease the average lengths of root systems (meaning plants don’t expose themselves to a number of beneficial things that include deeper stores of vitamins and minerals, like they normally would), while depleting the upper levels of soil.

Organic farming is often derided as being supposedly inefficient, since it takes longer and requires a lot more work to maintain and produces food product that often spoils quicker; yet the sad fact is that since the post-World War II era, many industrially-raised fruits and veggies have been shown time and again as having gradually decreased in key nutrient levels (such as those of vitamins A and D, for instance) across the board, in some cases as much as 28% in only a couple decades. An apple a day may have kept the doctor away during the Cold War, but now it takes at least three to get that same amount of nutrition!

Ask yourself: would I rather have food that lasts a long time but screws up my body through a bizarre combination of overfeeding and under-nutrition and too many sugars of the type that my body isn’t well-equipped to process efficiently… or a smaller amount of food that needs to be eaten sooner, but that will be more nutritious, better-processed by my body, and probably more satiating because I won’t need to eat as much to get what I need from my diet?

A lot of people make a fuss about how supposedly, organic is OMG BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT… the truth is that regardless of any effect on the environment, it’s demonstrably better for your physical health to eat “whole foods” (but not necessarily from the oft-overpriced Whole Foods, which is a whole different kettle ‘a fish), and even better when some of those – particularly plants – are what we label “organic”. Granted, I don’t think that antibiotics should be outlawed in meat production – it’s been demonstrated that simple food contagions like listeria are already more common in meat from animals that never had antibiotics – but we really don’t know what effect certain hormones may have on the end properties of the meat, and if absolutely nothing else, it’s sure as hell better to eat meat that’s been fed off fresh grass (“free range”) than dried-out hay or industrial byproducts (not free range), since the animal itself would have had better nutrition, thus passing better nutrition up the food chain to those of us who eat it.

I don’t know about you, but if it means avoiding or alleviating all that heart disease, arthritis, cancer and late-life diabetes that so much of my family seems to be getting in the last few years on the “Western diet” (as the predominantly processed/refined diet has been known since it became prominent), I’d rather just stop eating so many cupcakes and pop tarts, and stick to the fruits, veggies, dairy, eggs and meat and whole grains that my family might have eaten and thrived on a couple hundred years ago – hopefully organic or free range, when it’s affordable, but really… anything but making processed crap the center of my diet.

In fact, I’ve actually been trying it off and on for a couple weeks, and come to the startling conclusion that I feel better when I am not eating Hostess cupcakes and fast food and even cereal bars every single day, multiple times a day… even though it’s actually as cheap or cheaper to eat in-season fruit or veggies for breakfast or snack in their place. And this comes from an avowed chocoholic with natural sweet tooth.

So yeah… while I don’t think white rice or cupcakes or chocolate will completely vanish from my diet, I don’t think adding a lot more whole foods in place of the more processed and refined foods is a bad idea, considering I feel better after a matter of DAYS, let alone the science to back up their better nutritional value. ;)

White people also like living close to nature (i.e. Wyoming) and voting for politicians who claim to hunt for their own food.

In fact, many white people like pointing out the ‘ridiculousness’ of stores like Whole Foods while happily shopping at Wal Mart and Sam’s for food…and ammo.

The wrong kind of white on December 5, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Now this post I don’t quite get. Organic foods are better for you, taste better, and are better for the environment. The comedy I see is the fact that rich people are the only people that can afford the healthy food. They act like poor people are stupid for not buying healthy organic foods, but they just can’t afford it.

You’re right; you don’t get it.

I get the humor…but there’s also an underlying issue that makes Whole Foods a necessary stop on my circuit. I do belong to a local CSA, and shop the farmer’s market. Being located in Baltimore, we have great local farms offering everything from free-range poultry & meats…to fresh milk, eggs & cheese. When you actually research to large commercial counterparts to these items, you don’t want to consume them. My son has life threatening food allergies and we have to purchase alternative dairy items, that would bankrupt us if we had to buy them in the local grocery store. Soy milk is $1.00 more in Safeway than in WF. Soy butter 150% more. Cereal, more than $1.- more than in WF & Trader Joe’s. Responding to the person that said that people don’t understand the chemistry of foods, they must be ignorant of the industry. I am a nutritionist and have studied the effects of artificial ingredients on our bodies. There has been irrefutable evidence that artificial colors have a negative effect on children with ADHD and Autism. People need to start making a concerted effort to read & understand their food. While I did see a woman at WF, wearing a fur coat, and obnoxiously large pearl earrings, purchasing $100.- worth of prepared foods on a dinner for two people…I also see many mothers in there comparing prices and looking for less harmful alternatives for children for their food.

I am glad to have WF around, as they carry many products that I can’t find elsewhere. I would prefer to live on a farm & grow all my own food…but for now, I live in Baltimore, have a modest city garden in my backyard, and frequent the farmer’s ,market. I shop at WF half of the time…I guess that’s because I’m a white woman with a black husband (who, by the way, hates going into WF!)

Peace!

I live in Baltimore, where do you find your local organic vegetables and meats? WHole foods is killing my purse!!

I thought they renamed this Whole Paycheck.

Sorry – that’s obtuse. But when I can go to Sam’s Club and buy four gallons of skim milk for the price of two at WF, well, then I’m going to Sam’s. Hormones shmormones.

The thing that is kinda sad is this…
I don’t eat healthily because I’m white – or wealthy. I’ve had the benefit of a decent education, and was raised by somewhat health-conscious parents. I don’t want to get cancer from pesticides and herbicides; I don’t want to develop diabetes or heart disease. I choose foods that will help avoid these things. There is a HUGE health disparity in the U.S., largely deliniated by race (maybe more accurate to say by economic class). Much of it has to do with a lack of education about diet – though things like access to health care and toxic waste disposal in poor areas are significant factors, too.

I get it’s satire. But the inaccuracy really highlights more about our society and it’s economic disparities than racial traits or disparities.

If someone wrote a blog or kept a site called “Stuff Black people like” they’d be crucified. How do people get away with stuff like this? It only perpetuates the hard lines of racial tension drawn by years of ignorance and intolerance. I’m white and my sister is black. We have yet to understand what is so different, because for us there is no difference. It’s just skin people! She loves Whole Foods. I prefer Super Target. Go figure.

I just really loathe Whole Foods. I’m a fourth generation (white!) SF native and Whole Foods took stuff that was good and actually affordable and jacked the prices up way higher than they needed to be. And then they made it look all pretty and “green”. PUHleez. I may be white but I’m not falling for that white trick.

It’s all about the Berkeley Bowl…

The reaction this gets out of the Whole Foods crowd makes me think that even they know on some level how retarded it is to overpay for items simply because they toss around words like “organic” which have become simple marketing terms.

I just heard Whole Foods will soon be carrying Andy Capp Cheese Fries. Can anyone confirm this?

I think this site is bull crap. If you thought for a second about what crap you were ingesting into the only body God gave you mabe you would wouldn’t make ignorant comments like the ones above. God never intended for us to eat amimal flesh riddled with antibiotics and mad cow disease just to mention a couple of gross things in your MEAT. So dont make comments about putting whole foods before church and cathedrals. Just do a little research to find out why young women get periods so early in life, or why some kids get ADD, how bout why so many people are lactose intolerant {namely African Americans}, then tell me I pay too much for fresh, untampered with fruits and vegetables! Race my dear friend, has nothing to do with it!

Why are you so offended. Also, if race has nothing to do with it then why bring up African Americans?

Humanity is terrified of change. Organic is the latest demonic concept. Please read more science and open your eyes to a natural existence.

“grain-fed free range meat and eggs”…anyone who knows true organic, humanely raised meat knows that cows are not made to eat grain…they eat grass and chickens are meant to eat bugs with a few seeds…not CORN…organic or not, get real people. Organic beef may be given hormones…it is allowed, the antibiotics are not. Unless you raise it yourself or know the person/farm it was raised on, chances are you are getting exactly what you don’t want!!!

Whole Foods haters might like my list of things wrong with Whole Foods: http://michaelbluejay.com/misc/wholefoods.html

But I’m not sure how correct it is to list WF as “something that white people like,” given that most white people don’t shop at Whole Foods. WF has a tiny share of the market compared to traditional grocery stores. That’s where most white people shop.

Sure, WF’s clientele is mostly white, but that doesn’t mean that most white people shop there. You know, most cheerleaders are girls, but that doesn’t mean most girls are cheerleaders. So maybe we should list WF as “a place non-white people don’t go”?

It is nowhere near as funny as this hilarious blog… And dear God, what would make a person think this site is “promoted by Whole Foods” … I hope this person (Rene Mendez) is sterile…

I also have to wonder how many books Rene has sold, my guess is that she has sold none… She probably hasn’t read any books either…

Whole Foods drove out the Patisserie and Kimuraya Bakery from the local mall. I was greatly saddened.

On another note, I want to say just take it in stride people. It’s just a joke. But sometimes I can’t tell if you guys are trolling or stating your honest opinions. So I’ll just shut up now.

This is absolutely, totally too good to pass up forwarding onto everyone I know! Why? Because it’s all true!!

This is too good to resist … right up my Little Ms. Ornery alley!

Thanks!!

A Non-Groupie “White Person”

hahaha.. I just found this when I was googling whole foods to find a place to go for lunch. I must be white.

I only saw the book of this, I never knew you had a website.. I’m so excited! :D

Oh my gosh! me too! I just found this site cause I googled Whole Foods for my husband. We just found out he is allergic to gluten. Who knew, this site is freakin awesome. I’m gonna tell all of my friends.

ya and black people like watermelon and fried chicken while white men cant jump black men cant read

why are whites ridiculous when they get offended but every other species of man its justified.

The reason why this is all so funny is that most of the world cultures know what their culture is. Japanese people like sushi and historically wore kimonos; In India, people don’t eat cows; Africans have rich and diverse and unique cultures all over that continent, and Black Americans have all sorts of music and dancing traditionally associated with their culture. In North America, every white person is technically an immigrant, leaving some culture behind somewhere in our past, but somehow we have come together to create a new intellectual collective which means WE DON’T REALLY HAVE A CULTURE. We’re just the white people who go around talking loudly and trying to make ourselves look smart (and failing miserably) because we don’t really know who we are or why we’re here. We like to pretend we’re unique and individual, “I like organic food; I like yoga and meditation; I like Japanese comics…” because it gives us a sense of self, which is funny because it ends up being just the same as everyone else down your street. Those of you who have lost your ties to your cultural roots — This blog/book is for you.

actually everyone in north america is “technically” an imagrant aside from native americans not just “whites” that is why our melting pot called america is the most diverse and culturally rich nation to ever grace our beautiful blue planet our uniqueness sets the bar for the rest of the world all free poeples of earth united.
this stage has been set by our ingenious “white” forefathers the grand plan for a utopian society and world peace and for the advancement of humankind. unfortunatly this is a long and extremly bumpy road that takes decades or centuries with many achievements and mistakes as great or horrable as they may be. in our day with all these wonderful achievements in civil rights and such… with all the work we still have left to do we can start by eliminating this double standard wheras “whites”civil rights and feeling can be infringed apon and trampled on without reaction or concequence but “whites”must respect all other ethicities (and rightly so ) or be labeled and condemed and suffer concequences like we see in the news i.e. certain sportscasters, talkshow hosts, actors, many other famous faces, aswell as ordinary “white” people who have lost jobs been fined or even jailed for expressing judgemental views (right or wrong) about other ethic groups please lets stop the madness.lets replace the term “whites” for a moment with “european americans”( if we must paint with a broad brush) for a moment. now re-read please!

oh! and speak for your self lucyface the self loathig “white” i know where i come from i am northern european more specifically irish and welsh or celtic
my ancestors came here to find work and escape oppression for example my irish ancestors oppressed by the english, poverty stricken, and dying because of a certain potato famine escaped to america and were met with a hail storm of stones ,bricks and predjiduce forced to join the civil war to gain citizenship they found oppression at it’s best(i.e. irish need not apply, irish the N’word of europe ,cartoons depicting the irish imigrants as sub-human etc…) do a little research or as i tell some of my new imigrant friends when they complain that they are not treated fairly just watch the movie “gangs of new york”. my ancestors both irish and welsh came to this country as lower class laborors such as stone masons, blacksmiths, and shoe cobblers who were oppressed not the oppresser never owned slaves and made thier way in this great country and left some of thier traditions at home and adopted others from other cultures in america like italians, german, greek, russian, dutch, polish, french to name a few as well as other “whites” or europeans or in this case european- americans and also lets not forget african, american indian, latino and others. i know my roots and am extremly proud that is why your comments and this web site i find distasteful, discraceful, and i never thought i’d say it offensive

Norman Thrashwell Bryce on January 30, 2009 at 4:59 am

Q: Do you know why the wheelbarrow was invented?

A: So the Irish could have training wheels.

sir, that is an excellent irish joke i know that one and tell it quite frequently as well as
how do you stop a polish tank?
shoot the guy pushing it!
or how about
what do you call a black guy having sex?
rape!
or maybe
how do you blind fold a chinese guy?
with dental floss?
hmmm… i wonder wich of these will be found offensive by americans of european decent?

In Ronald Reagan’s farewell address he predicted that people would teach their children to question patriotism and what it means to be born an American, and in 10 or 20 years America would turn into a nation of self-loathing.

wow! intresting looks like we are proving him to be something of a prophet or it may have just been an obvious observation of the fact that the paraniod and delusional drug using “hippies” would soon be running our great nation and influencing everything from media, popculture, educational institutions etc.. hopfully things get better with a new generation of leadership.

aside from the broad overstatements in the beginning, i see what you mean..
we can learn tolerance and understanding when we realize together we are a culture and as a collective society make our place in history

[...] Stuff White People Like sardonically says: Many white people consider shopping at Whole Foods to be a religious experience, [...]

Todd: Check out Stuffwhitepeoplelike.com. Guess it’s been around a while and mighty funny.

Scott: But I thought everyone liked those things…

Todd: Apparently not.

Scott: Are you saying, categorically, that non-whites come down on the side against fresh produce?

Todd: I think everyone likes fresh produce, but I think it is the way white people like and treat their fresh produce that is most pertinent. A non-white man walks down the street eating a pear the same way he walks down the street eating a hogie. Not so, the white man. There are stark differences in stride and carriage. No, the white man walks with his chin a little higher and feels a little smarter with fresh fruit in hand. There is a strut. It says, emphatically, “This could be you! I am connected, happy, in proper alignment. I am one with the world.”

And he wants people to take notice of this one-ness, particularly the people who are presently walking with a hogie or a bag of Fiddle Faddle.

Scott: Sometimes Todd, I just have no idea what planet you live on.

hey todd how about “stuff the up tight upper class douches of society like” from all ethnicities

I hate The Food Hole. I have one right next to my office and go in there from time to time looking for good deals, clearances, day old shit… there isn’t any, ever. Everything is totally f-ing expensive. I throm no hard-earned dough down The Food Hole.

Don’t you mean, “policy”? :

“…numerous pamphlets outlining the company’s police on hormones…”

Please refer to “Things white people like: GRAMMAR”. Maybe you should add “CORRECT SPELLING” to the list!

LMAO, this site is hilarious and way too true :) Keep up the good work.

Got to give it to um… May not be big on Hot dogs and Chili but they got a damn good selection of Beer!!!

Yeah, but so much of whole foods is like vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, dietary restriction food. Just shopping there I feel like I’m taking up a handicap parking space, I mean what if I buy the last macrobiotic donut and some poor starving macrobiotic schlep happens to come in right after me in a big macrobiotic-donut-craving fit. There could be a bloodbath!! have you ever seen an angry Macrobiotic? trust me all that denial and pent-up frustration…when it finally get’s released, it’s not pretty…

1- i would like to say HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA – funny cause its true…of course not about ALL white people- (i dont think its ment to be an adjective about the entire race, but rather to be an adjective singling out the “white”-white people of the race??? (MAYBE??) – if that makes sense
2- and this is in reply to zena – whoa – i dont like whole foods either, but i dont think they have ever stated anywhere that they are the “goddam holy grail” it seems like its their “holy-er than thou” “white” people that give them that complex?- again not sure if that makes any sense.
3- PEOPLE CALM DOWN AND LAUGH ITS JUST A FREEKIN BOOK- Your the ones that give it power- (just like whole foods btw) by gettin all angry, if you know it aint true about you, than take the crap with a grain of salt and LAUGH! :)

Could it just be that white people have taste?

Enjoy your KFC.

I am a hispanic vegan who lives in a very rural area of southeastern Colorado. During the winter when the produce stands are closed I would rather drive an hour and a half to Whole Foods than shop at Wal-Mart which is the only “grocer” near my town.

Dude, I dont shop there out of blah blah blah trying to be green or whatnot, the food just taste way better because its less processed, kraft singles vs aged cheddar

1. Whole foods is way too expensive and the economy is bad.

2. especially since I’m a grad student , whole foods is way too expensive.

3. I live in California and Trader Joe’s, Food Maxx, Costco, and the Rainbow Grocery Outlet are cheaper.

4. You can get organic food at all of the stores I just named off, you just have to read the labels. Reading labels requires patience.

5. When I was not in school and I had a GREAT job, I NEVER shopped at Whole foods. Why? Back then I thought it was too expensive.

6. I have advised all of my white friends to not shop at Whole Foods, and they took my advice because I am their token non-white friend.

7. Since I have street cred, those white friends who took my grocery advice seriously and are now saving LOTS of money.

8. My white friends and I are not overweight, do not have cancer or any other ailments and we do not shop at Whole Foods. You can live without it.

Hahahahaha. Shopping at Whole Foods is “refined” consumption. Here in Los Angeles, you will find a little Tyrone begging for some tofu sausage too! The crowd at those stores is quite varied. You should really give it a try!

Funny.

Call this African-American family of six Whole Foods heads. Sure, we could save $2000 per month if we shopped at the crappy Safeway or Giant Food or even the (GASP) Wal*Mart!

The scary thing is we’re not the only sisters or brothers running around the Whole Foods Marketplace. Check out the vast number of people who don’t want to keep taking conventional medicines and wanting a more natural approach to health, you’re finding those people more and more aligning themselves to the Whole Foods brand

whole foods is just like wal-mart but with fancy stuff. don’t be fooled. they want to take over the world just like every other corporation.

whole foods is just like wal-mart but with fancy stuff. don’t be fooled. they want to take over the world just like every other corporation.

I remember when Whole Foods was Wild Oats–that was only two years ago! It was expensive then, and it is now, but only the selection has only gone down-hill with the takeover by a larger corporation. Trust me, if you sincerely want to eat healthy and save a buck, either Trader Joe’s or the organic section of your average supermarket. The rest is just bourgie snootiness.

I worked for Whole Foods at the end of its Golden Age- the late 90′s. While I did enjoy some of the benefits of this Golden Age (profit-sharing, laid back dress code, etc…), I was also forced to witness Whole Foods corruption from the inside. A bunch of noveau rich took control of the middle management and gentrified the company.

I remember the days when green-haired freaks wearing Dead Kennedys t-shirts tended the registers… now its just regular people. Good-bye bonuses and stock options, hello dress code.

Ultimately, I think their main spiel was using a hippy-inspired ‘lets save the world’ work ethic to convince their employees to bust ass for peanuts. Thankfully, I’ve moved on to much better employment.

None of the people that work there (I have TWO Whole Foods closeby) seem happy. They never smile or interact. I’m sure you don’t miss it.

I think it’s meant to be funny and not so much offensive. Are you white? <—-#101

Whole Foods is a waste of money in my book. Only time I went in there was to look for Brown Rice Tea and Cedar Papers for cooking fish. Stuff I can’t get in a normal grocery store.

I shop at Trader Joe’s, Butera (local place), and the typical normal grocers. I don’t see any need to spend more for normal goods just to look wealthy, successful or to have some false sense of “taste” because I got it at Whole Foods.

I find it funny the amount of people who I’ve seen shop at Whole Foods who can’t even cook to begin with.

Blondie_magoo on May 16, 2009 at 6:19 am

I think it’s funny how most people who wrote negative post here no nothing about Whole Foods, half the bashing comes from false info, I work for Whole Foods, not only is cleaner, safer, and healthier food, the stores actually look nice where as any stop and shops and Wal-Mart super stores, look like shit.

I’m all for people who don’t care about organic food or not, but there is no reason to try to sound smart and bash an international conglomerate due to lack of knowledge on your part…

I have found that many of these Whole Foods style places are extremely over priced.
The best places to shop for healthy foods are ethnic stores, Middle Eastern, Asian, Indian etc… They have better tasting versions in bigger quanities and at better prices than these yuppy health stores.
But the yuppy stores are nicer to shop in and the food is packaged very nicely. Its also a status symbol to shop there.

Well i’m an African-American and i’m vegan and shop at Whole Paycheck (Whole Foods) every week. Actually about 90% of the stuff on this blog applies to me. This blog is more about liberal, yuppie, enviornmentalists than white people overall. Not one white person i knew came to mind while i was looking at the full list. Actually my friend Nia (also an African-American female who is vegetarian) and I came to mind. I live in New Orleans and both of the Whole Foods in the New Orleans area are full of health conscious black people.

FYI: Paper bags are no longer politically correct. You must choose one of the thousands of 99 cent bags that ride around in your car with you at all times. And if you are my husband, you would not think of taking a bag with the grocery store name on it into the drug store. How gouache! So add another bag to the collection–and try to remember to take one or two or three or four into the store with you so you don’t have to leave a full cart and trudge back into the parking lot to get the said bag.

I WANT A MILLION DOLLARS!!! Can one million RICH WHITE PEOPLE send me one dollar apiece, puh-lease????

I don’t want money from any Asians, or Blacks or Hispanics. You guys NEED your money. I only want one dollar apiece from RICH WHITE PEOPLE who seem to WASTE their money on whole foods and grocery co-ops.

Waste it on me instead. Thanks so much! (First person who comments “You ARE a waste.” is a rotten egg. You thought it. I know you did. Stop lying. See? I knew it.)

http://thepighasacurlytail.wordpress.com/million-dollar-fund/

Your loser plan isnt going to work… study the game before you jump in.

this one made me laugh so hard… the part at the end… lovely

Further the metaphor, the three scariest places to attempt to park a car for any White person are: Whole Foods/ Trader Joes (especially in Portland, OR), any sidearm-friendly Baptist Church and of course, the Gulfport, MS. or Hazleton, PA Super WalMart! My car’s a real piece of crap and did real well in the side impact IIHS crash tests and all, but just the image of hundreds of E-85 burning XC70, X5′s and Porsche Cayenne trying to re- enact the first three minutes of The Road Warrior (with latte- swilling, i-Phone texting moms afeared to smack the ravening little monsters blocking their view) backing into me at 45mph, in a free-range vegan feeding frenzy… Oh, the frigging HUMANITIES

I’m happy to see that the owners of these companies have found ways to part fools with their money.

At least someone is getting a return on the taxes spent in social engineering that indoctrinate our youth in all levels of education with the Liberal religion.

I love the store…..

After the Whole Foods’ CEO’s recent Wall Street Journal op ed on health care, I think you can probably drop Whole Foods from the list of stuff white people like.

bcarter3 beat me to it. After John Mackey’s recent heresy, it seems that a boycott is already underway. I’ll have to start going there now because I’m the wrong kind of white person.

Black people like using plastic bags, littering, letting their kids eat lead and mercury, eating pesticides, and having super high asthma rates. They all love it!

You Bitter Racist TRASH! Blacks do not like the positions that the whites have placed them under. Its unfortunate that you are not grateful enough to appreciate what you have, because if you did, you would not sit there speaking that sort of garbage. I would be blessed to run into a person like you. You would never dare say that to a black person’s face and believe that you would get away with it. Its people like you that are unfortunate to still walk the earth. Maybe not though, the true rapture of GOD is coming and luckily you’ll most likely stay behind with the rest of the demons. You obviously have no GOD!

Barksworsethanbite on November 29, 2009 at 1:31 pm

This is a very sensible article. The idea that the Whole Foods replaces church is pretty accurate. This “earthy-crunchy-green” thing is definitely the new religion. Republicans are the Anti-christ, Al Gore and Deepak Chopra are apostles and Global Warming is the coming Apocalypse.

Anyone palming carob off on a child as “candy” should be accused of child abuse and carted off for the pervert they are.

I’m not crunchy, but I still think Republicans are the Anti-Christ.

My grandparents grew up on a ranch, and ate everything fresh FOR FREE, though admittedly they had to harvest or kill it. Now we have to pay through the nose to eat like they did. We’re f****d.

I work at a local co-op, and this article is perfect.
….so are the rest of the 129 articles.

(W)hole Foods actually does provide many services to those who are not liberals:

Because the clientele are predominantly liberal, (W)hole Foods stores are bum magnets. Parasitic panhandlers are naturally drawn to environs where guilt-ridden liberals seek absolution by tossing coins to the bums. This natural draw for the bums may, in fact, be the only thing “natural” about (W)hole Foods.

Because of this, the bum population is reduced in areas where liberals don’t shop, thus the benefit.

A liberal clientele also attracts left-wing political activists and their unending petition drives for whatever the latest leftist fad “de jour” may be. Here again that reduces the number of these brainwashed, mostly college kids/petition solicitors from useful places of commerce.

“Organic Food” provides a market for damaged, spoiled and worm/insect infested produce. This market for agricultural waste reduces the costs of quality produce for non-liberals.

The sales of “fad” products and philosophies (which is, after all, what 99% of this blog is about) provides the capitalist the means to remove the wealth of the guilty liberal for their own benefit. Even (W)hole Foods CEO John Mackey acknowledged this with his quote “we sell a bunch of junk”

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/aug/05/whole-foods-boss-junk-food

And his repudiation of one of the pillars of the liberal religion, socialized medicine.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204251404574342170072865070.html

And even some liberal zealots are finally catching on to what (W)hole Foods really is.

http://www.theultimatespaceship.com/The_Ultimate_Spaceship/Blog/Entries/2008/9/25_Whole_Foods_%3D_Whole_Fraud.html

My Mom gave us carob in our Easter baskets one year. I still haven’t recovered from the disappointment :-)

A true standard in comedy blogging.

Another great site is http://www.SomethingYouShouldRead.com

Blech, carob–”this is what evil must taste like.” I have an inlaw–the first stop on the visit is to the Whole Foods. This person also meets 25 out of the 48 SWPL. (So far–is it a white person trait to want to read blogs in order from the beginning?) This person would die if they realized they were so easy to categorize.

I guess my “Friends” reference makes me a white person too.

Ok listen. Actually this is completely false, the reason why people eat organic food is because most of the illnesses in todays society are all caused by the sorry excuse for “food” that we purchase every day. It has been processed, as stated above in every way imaginable from pasteurization, which destroys all of the nutritional value of the food and toxins and chemicals put in it to make it last LONGER on the shelf so that more MONEY can be made.

Then when we get sick, we go to the doctor and get drugs to ease our pain and make us sicker, which most Americans still fail to see- people in Haiti for example, as poor as they are eat ORGANIC food, because its all they have. Heart disease, the number one killer in america, virtually is NON EXISTENT in that country. They laugh and call it the WHITE MAN”S disease- ha. Also why do you think animals don’t get sick in the wild?……Most of the people shopping here are well aware of these facts while the rest of the population continues to kill themselves,

That being said, Whole Foods is a corporation, but that doesn’t stop the organic food from being organic, also there are the fanatical nuts who are “going green” just because its a fad, and are completely misinformed, oh and if you think what I am saying is nuts or “just showing this blog to be that much more true”, enjoy being one of the 1 in 3 Americans who is needlessly going to die from cancer, or enjoy getting your bipass surgery after your heart attack- when you could have just cleaned your arteries out with chelation therapy…….

p.s. don’t forget to drink your chlorinated, poison fluoride water out of the tap, to scar your arteries, and make the cholesterol easy to stick to the walls…… because people drink bottled water for “white people fanatical reasons”…….

Ehh, flouride is often in natural water sources. It’s also very good for your teeth (der…). Really nothing wrong flouride, unless you are guzzling it.

Also, these blogs are for humor, not to be taken seriously. The blogger most likely actually shops at this same store.

Haitians don’t have our same level of heart disease simply because the average life expectancy there is only 60 years.

They die of other causes before they get old enough to get heart disease.

Is that what you want for Americans?

This argument means nothing in that half of heart attack victims are under 65 anyway.

Moot point if you are already dead before age 65.

You are such a white person. Lolz.

God, do you dumbshits know how much organic food it would take to feed the entire United States? It wouldn’t even be possible. There isn’t even enough god damn land to have all the animals we eat be free-roaming. Food prices would skyrocket at an unheard of rate. The poor in this country would starve. I mean, if you guys want to eat your organic foods go ahead it really does not affect me, but please do not think you are better than me just because you eat meat from a cow that was aloud to walk around in a small field. And don’t say you don’t think you are better than everyone else for eating organic food, I can hear it in your tone.

And why aren’t all you “going green” people taking any god damn science classes? Stop doodling pictures in art class, and start learning something that’s actually productive, so that maybe you can help us engineers (and the scientists, too) actually solve the problem. Turning off your lights for an organized hour every year is NOT HELPING.

(I do drink filtered water though, so I’ll give you that.)

The end.

Comedy blog with lots of truth to it. It SHOULD be taken seriously. White people are a joke. The left leaning urban dwelling types at least.

Don’t know if its true or not, but I recently heard that Africa is now sending more Christian missionaries to America than vice versa. Now we know why.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Oh and btw madmeag – you feel whiter and whiter on the inside?!? Soooooooo?
Skin color is really irrelevant.
Because the last I heard, no matter what color our skin is… we all have the same color of blood “on the inside”.

Greatest. hippie. ever. Anyone seen a “Cheech and chong” movie when they met him in person on the Mexican border? The US border patrol thought Jesus was some hippy out in the desert, long bearded, wears sandles and came to the guard stating the answer of a question when entering the US, Jesus replied “I have children everywhere”.

Overpriced non-Organic foods on March 8, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Whole Foods: Greatest. Scam. Ever. Ask any consumer watchdog group, whom also recently went after the Girls scout cookie vendor issue (find it on AOL, yahoo or google) as well on Dateline NBC undercover news specials. This is nothing more than a scam, plus you can’t be 100% certain the carrot you buy for $2-5 in Whole Foods is organic, fair trade or from a neighborhood garden.

Wow thats really funny, dateline NBC, you mean the mainstream media outlet that has the drug companies and Mcdonald’s as sponsors? no- you couldn’t possibly be talking about them, after all we all know that the guys at the news are really concerned and only want to give us the facts, right? they wouldn’t let money or conflict of interest or sponsors get in the way of that right?

Nice name by the way- I wonder who you REALLY are????

Apparently, you have never eaten a single morsel from whole foods, because the taste between organic broccoli, and conventional, grass fed beef and genetically modified corn fed beef, ect. is like night and day, oil and water. After eating REAL food, I can’t even take a bite of modified modern food without spitting it out, that’s how tasteless it is in comparison. Anyone who as eaten food from there knows this, and doesn’t need “proof” because you can taste the chemicals in the conventional food when you go back to it and taste it.

But all of this is meaningless, anyway because all organic food HAS to be USDA certified ORGANIC anyway, Dumbass.

Can you GO two WORDS without CAPITALISING something? You spit out food that’s not organic? Man up faggot.

Seriously, this Joe guy sounds like a prissy, spoiled bitch. He must have been raised by two gay dads or something.

I live in a village and work in agriculturing. We produce organic foods and i try to read everything about them.
This information is very useful for me. I also found another useful guide about organic foods;

I’m sorry, why does everyone take this so seriously again? This is humor, not a discussion on socioeconomics. Have a sense of humor. I basically fit the bill when it comes to SWPL and I think that I can have a little self deprecating humor. Everyone should. So, now I have to go work more towards my liberal arts degree. Maybe I’ll buy some sushi from the Whole Foods down the road for lunch. I’ll need all the strength for 80′s night tonight.

[...] Wal-Mart’s food may be beating out Whole Foods in terms of quality. (Which is going to make white people very unhappy!) As someone who was comfortably seated on her high anti-Wal-Mart horse, I am not [...]

WoW it’s April 2010 and just reading this blog! Where have has it been?
I’ve been working for WFM for 15 years and just about every opinion stated here against John & whole Foods is the god awful TRUTH.
I ve been vocal about my Ideas and opinions @ WFM and this is the first time that I feel that my job is at risk because of it. They don’t care about Team MeMbers anymore. The last job Dialog I did was in 2007. I am not inspired, they are hiring people with no communication skill, not following polices they have written, theirs no trust between employees & Company.
HERE’S AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT I MEAN=WFM has an open door policy=meaning u can talk to a Store Team leader about A Team leader,co-worker about problems,U ARE HAVING WITH THEM,etc. And the policy STATES that no one can retaliate against you for doing so. Well they do by cutting your hours. I have heard my Team Leader bragging to another about it. This is not a team, this is hostile.
Well WFM is not following there own written policies.
This is why we need a union period!
Favortism runs huge here @WFM high school, some employees are not getting write-ups while others are for the same offense. And it maybe that this sound like I am wining but I’ve seen many of my fellow co-workers get pushed of their jobs and then quit, They’ve worked for 20 years + I know that WFM wants to get rid of top dollar people so it can pay less wages to Managers or any other persons that has been a longtime employee. I know I’ve seen it go on in our Ca stores. We all know what it is about “greed”! The Moral is so bad, it will never recover. No matter how many surveys we do. Maybe Kroager will purchase WFM, but then who cares!

The only people who benefit from fluoride in the water are children under 3 years of age. For the rest of us it’s a pollutant, a chemical they needed to find a commercial use for.

There was an excellent article in the NY Times magazine regarding the very scary entrance of Walmart into organics. It must be archived if you’re interested.

Walmart has LOTS of lobbyist’s and no ethics whatsoever. They’ve been doing everything in their power to change the definition of “organic.”

We live in a capitalistic society. So what that Whole Foods makes money. They should! At least they do it with far more integrity and transparency than other company’s. I think they’re fabulous and they’ve been on the “best company to work for” list forever.

If there is truly an integrity problem with your team leader talk to the Store Manager. Don’t be a part of the problem be a part of the solution. Getting negative is not proactive and you’ll lose site of what your true intention is–I think to keep your job. Right?

I never heard of Whole Foods firing people who have been there for a long time. This is the first. Most employees that I’ve spoken to are very happy to be there. Sorry your experience hasn’t been positive.

Why the white people thing? Must be the area your store is in. Clearly you have not been to New York where people of all colors worship good health. :)

:)

Whole Food takes Food Stamps and that’s awesome for this white girl.

Mrs. Greens–if any of you are familiar DOES NOT.
Now that’s being elitist.

In my neighborhood, it’s whiter than rice in Whole Foods, not least because their produce costs double to quadruple the price of other chains.

My husband and I joke that Whole Foods should be called Whole Paycheck…because that is what you spend there for a week’s worth of groceries.

yeah i pity us fools out here who eat “conventional food”.

Such a very white response of you, Lisa.

This is the one place I sort of disagree with the list. While Whole Foods is important, Trader Joe’s is the church of white.
