White people hate a lot of stuff (white people who vote republican, television, Vin Diesel movies, SUVs, fast food) but every once in a while they turn that hate into sweet irony.
Often times, white people will make a joke about how hard it is to define irony. It’s not that funny, and back in the 1990s people got all upset at Alanis Morrisette for using the term improperly in her song “Isn’t it Ironic?”
But the reason that white people love irony is that it lets them have some fun and feel better about themselves.
The most horrific recent example is Trucker hats, that shockingly went from mainstream in the 80s to Ironic in the early 2000s back to mainstream, at which point they are no longer rare or unique. Once something reaches this stage, irony cannot be restored for 10 years.
Other examples would include white people getting together to have a ‘white trash’ night where they would eat Kentucky Fried Chicken, drink Bud Light and watch Larry the Cable Guy or The Marine. Maybe listen to Kid Rock or P.O.D. These events allow white people to experience things they are supposed to hate, all while feeling better about their own lives, decisions, and cultured tastes.
Occassionally, white people will put an ironic knick knack in their home or apartment such as a “Support our Troops” magnet or a bottle of Mickey’s.
This can be used to your advantage. If you need to appear cool to white people, you just need to pick something that was popular 10+ years ago and put it in a prominent place at your desk or in your home. A C+C Music Factory Cassette, or a “2 Legit 2 Quit” t-shirt would both be acceptable examples.
Also, you might find yourself in conversation where you mention that you like something and there is an awkward silence indicating that it is not cool. In this situation, uou must say “oh yeah, I also like [insert similar things]” and smile, the white people will laugh and all will be well.

I think its funny how many people have used this blog as a soapbox to preach about there own personal……moronic, self centered, egotistical, one minded beliefs, like writing a bitter, overly worded paragraph to make complete strangers, might actually make the forementioned strangers think for 10 seconds that you might be smarter then you must feel you are. If you dont understand what i am saying, you are one of these people,if you do understand and disagree with what i have typed here, your one of these, if you type to people, with full intentions of trying to make them feel dumb for typing there thoughts into a internet blog page….chances are you are one of these people.
^^^^^^^ A perfect example of irony.
if you dont think so your a moron!!!!!!!1
I dunno… a little heavy-handed. I give it a 7.4.
Ya gotta go at least 8 because it is IN the irony blog
Really all of these comments ruin satirical sites. People who get angry and type in some little rant, while funny, just expose themselves as the type of “white” people this site is lampooning. The people who claim to identify with almost everything on the list are just bad people. If you even identify with half the stuff on this list you need your ass kicked on a daily basis. Then the most pathetic people of all are the ones that really think American whites are like this. Those are the ones that truly don’t understand satire and parody. Especially the idiotic out of touch Europeans. They really are laughable. Although it is fun to laugh at the stupidity of these people it just reminds me of how dumb and sheep like all of humanity really is.
“…it just reminds me of how dumb and sheep like all of humanity really is.”
How’s the view from your parents’ basement, big guy?
Ironically, I don’t get this one at all.
most white people in this country are republicans. most republicans (by far) are white people. this website propagates the myth that by being liberal, white people are somehow subjugating other subcultures in our society.
gosh, i hate to do this but rico, your logic is flawed. it begs the question and your claim is not supported by any relevant premises. try taking a ethics class like critical thinking or something and you can post intelligently… like me.
Rico,
I think this is more targeted at young urban white people, not just white people.
This site is targeted at young urban white people…? WTF are you from?
As a white liberal, I think Rico’s comment propogates the myth that I don’t subjugate other subcultures in our society. I assure you I do at every opportunity, usually with a pat on the head.
Ah, but Rico is a step ahead of you, Cliffie. He – She actually – is a white woman posing as an Hispanic man, and thus propagating the myths that all non-whites are dirty Mexicans, and that all stupid people are men. Chinese are not technically Mexican (although most blacks are), and several groups of women, including fetal alcohol cases, “midgets”, and Scientologists are quite stupid as well.
You missed two whole LAYERS of irony there – shame on you. No soy lattes for two weeks, and you have to watch the Chevy Chase/Richard Pryor SNL sketch 50 times, claiming each time that it’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen. Racist.
White people like pretending to pretend to be racist. It’s kinda fun.
The intentionally lost scene of SNL isn’t the most outrageous thing on American TV, I was 9 years old when I watched Andrew Dice Clay perform live (and uncensored) on the MTV Video Music awards. His “nursery rhymes” made me laugh my head off…sexual innuendo, bodily functions, foul language and ethnic stereotypes. Here’s one I know of: “Hickery, Dickery, Bop. You’re Mom is a Wh*re and he is not your pop. She’s a Jew whom gone out with a Wop…” He was banned from MTV for life (and still is on the black list). +
Two more lines from the comical genius Andrew Dice Clay circa 1990 LIVE on MTV:
“Mary had a @#$%^&* lamb…”
“Jack and Jill went up to the hill, to smoke mary-juana, Jack got high and unzipped his fly, but Jill said I don’t @#$%^&* wanna”.
“The old woman beat up her kids, send them to the attic and told them you can’t watch the MTV VMA tonight.”
Tony, can you give back a few days of lattes for using both “subjugate” and “subcultures” in a one sentance irony post. Thems sum skillz!
“These events allow white people to experience things they are supposed to hate, all while feeling better about their own lives, decisions, and cultured tastes.”
Which is exactly why white people read this blog.
Oh, the irony!
Isn’t it ironic that this entry is completely incompatible with many others on this blog, especially the one on being offended?
This list of things “white people” like is more specifically American than most people here realize. Over here in Europe, no “white” person would totally sincerely denounce anyone for using a politically incorrect term for a person of a particular ethnic group, or totally sincerely profess enjoyment of classical music when they actually are into it, except for Albinoni’s Adagio and O Fortuna. If they did any of these things, they would be laughed at as unsophisticated and pretentious at the same time. Ditto for people who are dead serious about being e.g. vegans or eating organic food.
This is true at least in the UK and in Norway (where I live), but possibly not in all European countries (definitely not Sweden or Germany, whose people, like Americans, are Serious with a capital S). And we are as white as they come…
This blog should be called “Stuff young American WASP liberals with higher education like”.
edit: should be “or totally sincerely profess enjoyment of classical music when they are NOT into it”

I find…most things ppl claim to be “ironic”…are not…just bad…
Like all those things in the Alanis Morisette song…
Bullshit man…

I once worked in an office with a woman who wore powder blue eye shadow.
I thought, “Wow, she’s cool.”
But after awhile I realised that she did it for real, not as an ironic gesture.
Then I just felt bad for her.
bwaaahhhaaaahaaaahaaa!
crying man. honestly.
This post makes me feel bad for you, Chip. Actually being or doing something isn’t so bad; try it sometime.
