#50 Irony

White people hate a lot of stuff (white people who vote republican, television, Vin Diesel movies, SUVs, fast food) but every once in a while they turn that hate into sweet irony.

Often times, white people will make a joke about how hard it is to define irony.  It’s not that funny, and back in the 1990s people got all upset at Alanis Morrisette for using the term improperly in her song “Isn’t it Ironic?”

But the reason that white people love irony is that it lets them have some fun and feel better about themselves.

The most horrific recent example is Trucker hats, that shockingly went from mainstream in the 80s to Ironic in the early 2000s back to mainstream, at which point they are no longer rare or unique.  Once something reaches this stage, irony cannot be restored for 10 years.

Other examples would include white people getting together to have a ‘white trash’ night where they would eat Kentucky Fried Chicken, drink Bud Light and watch Larry the Cable Guy or The Marine. Maybe listen to Kid Rock or P.O.D.   These events allow white people to experience things they are supposed to hate, all while feeling better about their own lives, decisions, and cultured tastes.

Occassionally, white people will put an ironic knick knack in their home or apartment such as a “Support our Troops” magnet or a bottle of Mickey’s.

This can be used to your advantage.  If you need to appear cool to white people, you just need to pick something that was popular 10+ years ago and put it in a prominent place at your desk or in your home.  A C+C Music Factory Cassette, or a “2 Legit 2 Quit” t-shirt would both be acceptable examples.

Also, you might find yourself in conversation where you mention that you like something and there is an awkward silence indicating that it is not cool.  In this situation, uou must say “oh yeah, I also like [insert similar things]” and smile, the white people will laugh and all will be well.

writing, reading or posting on this blog qualifies as the most ironic of all.

Seems like the whole concept of irony in this post is wrong. Something 10 years old might be outdated, but certainly not ironic.

i think it’s directed to upper/upper-middle class white Americans. the irony is that you’re privileged and wearing something that indicates “not privileged.”

sorry…i know white people (and pseudowhite people like me!) don’t like having their obviousness explained to them :)

if you like Alanis from “Plastic” and “Never Too Hot, Never Too Cold”, but don’t like “Ironic”. Is that Ironic?

Irony – the vast majority of white people vote republican, want SUVs and eat fast food. of course US white people know this, but in case there foreigners or whatever reading this site… “white people” here refers to the smaller, non-fundamentalist group of white people who are uncomfortable with being white people.

If all white people were really like this the US would be a much better (albeit more self-righteous) country, and the world would actually be better off by extension. In the mean time, have fun with your priuses guys.

Jupiter Jones on April 2, 2008 at 8:01 am

Of all these sites, the most pathetic post I’ve read was from a 44 year old guy working in the non-profit sector who advised that he was just now buying his first new car – a Toyota Yaris. That is the very definition of a loser.

Well, Christian, your post was utterly devoid of irony, which is itself, ironic.
Or, it was just stupid, trying to be earnest.
Either way, you’re not as cool as the rest of us.

Not 5 years ago (loser!), not 7 years ago (quaint!) but ten years ago, thank you very much.

My hobby (see username) isn’t going to be ironic anytime soon.

Nothing is more ironic than stuffwhitepeoplelike

i laugh myself sometimes

lolololololololololololololololololololol

fuck you u stupid bitch shoulld yu go fuck your mother you are white so do dat you stick walkin up your ass whore

What? No one has any idea what you just wrote. I’m going to try and translate it… ok, here goes

“Fuck you. You are a stupid bitch and you should go fuck your mother. You are white so you should do this, you whore with a stick walking up your ass.”

Hopefully this will help the English speaking readers of this page to understand your important response to this topic.

Thanks Mike. Disgusting insults are so much more tasteful when the grammar and spelling are correct. Now I’m off to fuck my mother….

omgosh, this is sooo funny. i laughed so hard at ur response. i couldn’t figure out what that guy was saying either…must have been mad…bet he stutters, too. hahahaha

hahahaha you talk like a barbarian whose race has been appropriated by white people.

Silly negro.
What does that mean?
Are you mad at me for chastising you yesterday at the grocery store for packing my groceries incorrectly?

Perfect grammar on all acounts

Very mature for a white guy.

No, you are neither funny nor clever.

You may not be a racist, but from your post it appears that your thought process is somewhat simplistic and reactionary.

Which is something you may have in common with racists.

1. If you dont wana be called racist, dont BE racist.

2. DA, you made two things about sombreros.

3. You dont have enough guts to put your real name up

4. You are racist, clearly.

I’m white and I like how this blog turns around and makes fun of rich white people for making fun of poor white people. Yay!.

YES! I also like how quickly alot of the responders
(respondents? grammar police!?) show how they personify the stereotype that is the topic of the parody.

But then, I grew up wearing non-ironic Chuck Taylor’s

this is probably one of the funnier things i have seen in awhile. it’s a good satire, straight up.

mmm, mickeys. we hide the caps under the radiator incase we cant figure out the puzzle. come back to it a month later and it figure it out.

This form of irony is also referred to as “recreational slumming.” The first person to use the term was, I think, Douglas Coupland in Generation X.

I find a lot of this incredibly amusing. The one thing that strikes me, though, is that the author is really describing “liberals” than “white people” as a whole. Not that there’s anything wrong with liberalism. For example, I’ve read a couple of times on here statements that ostensibly say white people don’t vote Republican… which is a ridiculous assertion as the GOP is the old, rich, white guys’ club.

Nevertheless, this stuff is pretty damn funny.

AlmostAlbino on March 26, 2008 at 5:38 pm

Those GOP old rich white guys are what is known as the wrong kind of white people; i.e., not myself or anyone with whom I would willingly associate. Thank you.

Actually, white people vote for Republicans and minorities vote for Democrats. That is a statistical fact. Stuff white people like includes George Bush and John McCain. This site has it’s stereotypes confused. Take the Georgia primary – 96% of Republican voters were white. Only 43% of Democratic voters were white. Stuff white people like: Republicans.

We aren’t talking about Southern white people (if you read the post they actually make fun of them (giving me one more reason to hate them (I’m from the South and have a lot of Redneck traits))). We’re talking about Northern, Midwest, and Western white people that feel bad for being white.

I am thinking about this fucking never-ending ironic circle.
a.) this blog is written by a white person.
b.) “guilty for being white” by minor threat.
c.) you’re funny, you’re so radical and so different and elite!
d.) if there were a blog written about black people stereotypes, oh the mayhem it would cause!
e.) go fuck yourself.

multiple choice questions can be so tricky…..

I choose f.) lighten up

“White people hate a lot of stuff (white people who vote republican, …”
You have to mean Democrat.

this doesn’t apply to southerners.

Oh, I get it now! You mean Stuff White People (in Boston) Like.

It is important to be aware of certain facts.
Privilege will create insensitivity and smugness. It is a social and situational hazard, not a biological one.
Insensitivity is one result of the drive to shield the “self” from the pain the “other”, however those terms are being defined in the moment.
This disconnect causes its own deep wounds, most of them unacknowledged.
Privilege is a means of division- give some more than others and watch them fight.
Even those around us who seem to have the most privilege have tiny fractions of the kind of power reserved for the very wealthy around the world.
Everyone wants agency in the world. The trappings of privilege are not unjustifiably desirable. It is the inequity that is hurtful.
Humor is a socially acceptable way to clothe anger, especially against the powerful, or even the self.
Most people fear anger in others.
Outrage is often a socially acceptable way to clothe fear.
Anger often denotes disappointment, the idea that people have a potential not lived up to.
Passing on ideas on how to live up to that potential is a kind of care, however presented.
Call me an elitist self-absorbed smartypants idiot if you’re so inclined, but have the necessary conversations about these ideas.

Talking like an elitist self-absorbed smartypants idiot won’t start the necessary conversations. This blog already has. Your blog would not.

that’s like, so deep man. here, smoke some of this good shit man….

gerrygarcia on May 25, 2009 at 8:16 pm

i wouldnt waste time with the “elitist self-absorbed smartypants” bit.

i feel like i owe u $$$ for a highly effective therapy session. you addressed all my clothed fear and disappointed anger.

i am also bummed that i came to this post looking for answers and u send me away with more questions.

I, for one, am very tired of irony. Satire is fine but irony just just sucks all the joy out of everything.

@ 14 AMDubbin: I don’t dissagree, but I will say that anytime someone references a “liberal” they are usually talking about a white person. Black people for example, are not usually liberal but they do vote Democrat.

Also, people getting pissed off because there exceptions to the things on this list, need to lighten up. The blog is obviously about a specific type of white person; the hip, inner city variety. If you spent more than a few seconds trying, you’d find out very easily that this person blogs from LA. (so really I guess, the blog should be titled Stuff White People from LA Like).

Ya, I think irony is starting to show signs of fading out. I’m glad. I still really like irony, but when everything starts to get ironic, everything does start to get pretty empty.

Haha, my white friends have “Piss and beer night.” They rent crappy movies and drink crappy, cheap beer all night.

They “dress down” for the event as well, attempting to look like ‘white trash.’

They seem to enjoy it but the movies are very bad and I never make it through these “parties.”

The irony recycle cycle is muuuuuuuuuuch longer than 10 years. Proof: Seth Rogan & his bro’s doing the Jay & Silent Bob thing. It’s not ironic, or even recycled. It’s just part of a sloowwwwwwwwed down pop culture evolution process.

It used to be 10 years, a long time ago. Proof: Sha Na Na at Woodstock. 1969 gettin ironic w/ 1959. Or, American Graffiti: 1972 gettin pensive & reflective about 1962.

No one would make a film where major theme was “where were you in ’98″. And 4 years ago, no one would make a film whose major theme was “where were you in ’94″ Go watch Hype!. Find any common thread in there that could be rocked ironically today. Can’t do it.

OT, best ironic beer: PBR. It tastes good enough to actually drink it.

Jupiter Jones on April 2, 2008 at 8:03 am

Ya’ know, I saw Sha Na Na in concert back in ’78. Not a bad show. I’m not sure why I’m telling you this. I guess in the ether, no one can hear you scream.

“Sha Na Na were the Kings of Woodstock, deep in your hearts you know its true!

gold lame if only hendrix had been so smart!”

It’s rather ironic how offended people seem to be by this blog.

World’s #1 Irony travel destination: Branson, Missouri!

(a.k.a. Las Vegas if it were run by Ned Flanders.)

Jupiter Jones on April 2, 2008 at 8:04 am

Branson is where the Osmonds have gone to beach themselves.

omg that is fucking hilarious. so true. i’m from louisiana and my friends and i have been bringing up for weeks how all of our families love to go to branson. and how we judge ourselves for loving it, but it just doesn’t keep me from loving it

Shouldn’t this be “Misuse of the term Irony”?

i really liked it when clueless people whore von dutch trucker hats. because aside from his pinstriping and hot rod culture cred, von dutch was THAT crazy racist guy who lived in a bus and made guns and knives, spouted anti-semitic and sexist rants and made threats. i laughed every time i saw someone wearing von dutch- except britney- ‘that’ just made sense. irony? (i’m not sure, i’m white.)

[...] that is totally true. What is equally true, and here distilled quite brilliantly, is (#50) the role irony plays in allowing “cultured” people to go slumming: White people hate a [...]

The irony seems to be that there are still a lot of folks that believe there is a difference between republican and democrat politicians. There is no difference, they are all crooks and their only agenda is enriching themselves and their cronies. Well, in actuality the politicians are bought and paid for by the very rich and the politicians have to dance to whatever tune the very rich play. Any of the politicians will gladly sell the country to the highest bidder as long as the politician’s commission on the sale is large enough to sustain their flock into perpetuity. The irony of the democrats, controlling the legislature, staying in lockstep with the republican white house is thus explained … they are all getting rich by letting exxon and bp push oil to $103 per barrel.

However, crooked politicians’ real claim to fame is their continual use of the divide and conquer strategy – they play the minorities against each other, religions against each other, economic status against each other – and while we (be us white, black, brown, yellow, male, female, straight, gay, christian, jewish, muslin, poor, middleclass) rile against each other, because the politicians’ exclaim this or that group or “black hat” is the one that threatens and oppresses us. It is all smoke and mirrors, the real “black hats” are the crooked politicians. The corrupt politicians keep the masses fighting amongst themselves and continue the ferment distrust and animosity between various factions so we cannot and will not rise up with a solitary voice and send crooked politicians packing. As some of us worry about our god being replaced, or run in fear of homophobia, or having some minority take our job, or some conspiracy that keeps us from moving up the economic ladder, the rich just keep stealing from all of us (of course their term for it is “creating wealth”).

But we will continue to be the rich politicians’ pawns, and continue to buy off on whatever scare card the rich politicians want to play until they have established a return to the feudal system and there are only the have-nots and the have-way-too-much.

Dickman & Throbin on April 2, 2008 at 8:07 am

Dude,

Lay off the crack.

word of the day: succinct

If you want to join the elite, first you’ve got to purge yourself of all taste for the mainstream. But wait, stuff gets mainstream because it appeals to lots of people! So you must turn your back on your own instincts and develop artificial “taste”. Then you can look down on others who lack this self-discipline.

BRILLIANT.
#1 white person thing.

right now in Milwaukee the BIG IRONIC HIT is pabst beer. maybe it’s ironic everywhere by now.

even more authentically white, though, is acknowledging that everyone else is doing it to be ironic but you “liked it all along”

Everyone that drinks PBR claims they “liked it all along” but the truth is that they are broke cause its too close to the end of the month. Come the first, they’ll be back to drinking microbrews.

PBR is already too mainstream for the hip crowd. They’re moving on to Miller High Life and Coors Light. I went the Milwaukee’s Best route. Although, PBR will still stick around, because most bars with stock it because its hip even though it’s cheap.

@jamie: it’s a hit right now? hipsters have been drinking pbr for some years now.. sure some people drink it w a trucker hat for ironic value but the fact still remains that beers like pbr and oldstyle are cheap and dont really taste like anything: the perfect recipe for a night of ‘getting wasted’.

also irony isn’t a white-only phenomena, the bape/sneakerculture/hypebeast shit is rife with ironic color combos and graphics

"Your Momma" on March 1, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Christian,

Learn how to write. Your sentence structure and English suck. Try “grad-u-ma-tating” 8th grade. You neglect to put your own name in “caps”… Enough said.

P.S. Your grammer sucks too.

… and so does your “speelling”.

” in the 1990s people got all upset at Alanis Morrisette for using the term improperly in her song “Isn’t it Ironic?” ”

They got upset mostly because they themselves dont know what the word really means and repeated what they heard someone say on a radio or TV show.

White people may have the majority of higher educational degrees in America, but they usually are not all that well rounded and knowledgeable, and will do everything in their power to make you believe otherwise.
So if they hear someone say something, and it sounds logical, but they are not sure, they will still repeat it as if they know what they are talking about. If you really question them and ask them to explain their positions, many of them quickly fizz out and try to change the subject.

Your Momma,

I’ll save you the trouble, I know I suck at grammar and sentence structure.

not that i’m one to read blogs, but i like this one. it definitely caught my attention because i’m a white person, and my skin doesn’t lie. however it is quite obvious, and this is not to diminish the its value, that this blog is written by a white person simply because the author conjugates verbs correctly. and this fact brings me comfort.

and not i don’t believe in “caps” because it makes the other letters feel inferior.

gerrygarcia on May 25, 2009 at 8:23 pm

snap!

camelCaseIsTheOnlyTimeCapsShouldBeUsed

i meant “no” not “not.” when will voice recognition software reach the point in its development when it will function the way white people actually talk?

‘If all white people were really like this the US would be a much better (albeit more self-righteous) country, and the world would actually be better off by extension.’

We call this ‘Canada’.

I am feeling maligned and hated by your statement and will shortly be contacting a local CHC to report you.

White people hate whiteys that vote republican? Buy SUV’s? Eat fast food?

I can tell we’re not neighbors.

The white people getting all offended and indignant in the comments is funnier than the blog itself

I’m an extremely conservative white woman. I never would have thought of myself as “typical white” but this blog hits so many things right on the nose. As for everybody saying this is only true for liberals, I think really it’s targeting more of a middle class than any particular set of ideas by which you would iedentify yourself. That’s what makes it so funny. You don’t even realize that you and the guy with whom you would have said you had nothing in common both have kitchen aids and despise KFC.

I am a conservative white woman and I like KFC

You totally forgot to mention all the offensive theme parties that aren’t offensive because they are ‘ironic’

examples:

pimps and hoes parties

favorite celeb who died in a plane crash party (yes this really happened at my college)

most offensive halloween costume party (a bald, lesbian showed up as an aborted fetus, hanger and all)

any party where white people listen to kanye, lil wayne, or three 6 mafia and sing every single word of it while drinking forties and driving foreign (parents’) cars

etc.

my friends and i had an mlk party where we ate fried chicken, smoked kools, ate watermelon, and drank natty light

P.O.D!! Yeah! Ironic about POD? No white people in the band.

You would have to be American correct? You lot just don’t Get irony.
Or so we are told.

is this ironic? on March 6, 2008 at 10:35 am

talk about timing. i’m sitting here reading this post when the white guy next to me who is reading something else on the web cracks up and says, “ha! read this. this is so ironic!”

wha? am i on candid camera?

Two points:

About half the things on this site apply directly to me.

And isn’t irony this website’s bread and butter?

i’ve been bringing back raising the roof for a year now…

dammit

Since when does your friends represent white people? They are a minority.

Most white people think irony is something women are supposed to do.

Gabe_Goldsmith on March 7, 2008 at 9:34 am

I like to fancy myself a bit of a comedian(my audience being primarily white), and i seem to get a particular rise whenever my jokes have a connotation of irony.
Well done, keep up the great work.

My friends drink Bud Lite all the time, un-ironically – and we’re all past the age of 30 – please tell me what that means……..Do I have to start watching Larry the Cable guy? I’m so confused…

The Alanis Morrisette blast was hilarious!

Why are white people into knitting all of the sudden?

your blog is poorly written.

Supwrnintendo Chalmers! on March 8, 2008 at 4:38 pm

I’m Black and I wore a gold tooth a few years back, in an attempt to be ironic. But nobody got it. They just thought I was a black dude with a gold tooth.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Oh shit… that’s the best thing ever. And it’s so true.

hahahahahaha only me and mike got it, so stinkin’ hilarious. i’ve been laughing ever since i got on this site…goin’ to the the favs

I hate that dang song “Isn’t it Ironic?”

“Its the good advice you just didn’t take” How the hell is that Ironic that is dumb.

Irony makes us feel better about ourselves because you dumb fucks dont even know the definition. my first entry of my new website whatblackpeoplelike would have to be killing each other, you think I’ll get alot hate mail, who cares

ThingsWhitePeopleLike #whatever

Attempting to define an entire population of seemingly similar individuals with a list of traits and preferences

White people aspire to know “all there is to know” about any group, an evolutionary trait obviously crucial to our imperial and colonial instincts. This proclivity has manifested itself in the science of “demography,” the academic pursuit of “sociology,” and in a more lowly, bourgeoisie form known as “advertising.”

I hear ya #71 satire is not (necessarily ) irony either. Their examples of “trash parties” and all that is lame. *sob* “they don’t understand us.” *sob*

looks like SUMbuddy’z trying to score brownie points w/ #71!!

I heard this from a spoiled brat hipster in Portland: walking down the streets of Salem, he was brutally accosted with a gas station plastic cup full of Pabst(?) by a passing driver. Needless to say, he was unjustly targeted for his ultra-hip clothes, meekness and lavish bangs. “they just don’t understand us. They are uncomfortable that we dress this way and listen to indie [castrated] rock.” awwww, cute!!

I have to say that I found this blog hysterical and enlightening. I think there is a real difference between American whites and Canadian whites. I have to disagree with Torontoific…..though it is true there are tons of whites in Canada, Ontario, Toronto that fill this bill I also know a large amount of people who do not…Not surprisingly I am white and most of this did not apply to me (I don’t worship any other race (well I would like to be an asian chick for a day) nor do I have any self hatred in being British/Irish) ….my white friends are not like this….some of my friends of colour are a little like this! I hate those trucker hats….I hate those theme parties…..I don’t see whats funny about reveling in the “trashy” aspect of life…since I grew up poor…alot of the things that “white people like” apply to those that can afford it….this blog did explain why I hate listening to young white men talk on the subway….or why I hate listening to the white post-mod hipsters talk on the street….I rarely find a white bred and born Canadian guy attractive…because…everything is not ironic…or should be put on a shirt….they are boring…but as a people we are boring too…why because we are so clueless….sorry this was a messy ramble and full of spelling errors…I teach English……

white people like making fun of other white people, but of course see american white people as completely different from any other culture’s white people. do white people like foreign languages? i’ve often wondered if white people like being white while expressing interest in being a different race “just for a day/week”. what is the best way to find out if you’re just white on the outside, like some black people are just black on the outside and could be mistaken for a white person by the sound of their voice? if dr phil were black, but spoke like the white dr phil, would he be as effective? and what about rednecks? they often aren’t interested in weed, or different cultures, and they rarely try to look dignified or intelligent. please help me to distiguish between the white person that i am, and the different white people i often choose to surround myself with. oh, and how possible is it for a white couple to have a black child or a black couple to have a white child, like michael jackson? but without the child rape…

and what about rednecks? they often aren’t interested in weed

matt p… you should really look into that.. ie:willie nelson, david allan coe and so on… famous rednecks that smoke weed….

lol, this is no joke. my G/f is Mexican and my love of irony gets me in soooo much trouble with her.

Actually, Alanis Morisette’s “Ironic” is extremely ironic. Think about it: a song called “Ironic” that purports to be about irony, yet nothing in the song actually _IS_ ironic…

Just for the record, when I was in undergrad in the early 90s, white kids were already wearing trucker hats in irony.

These were kids who had been earnest punk rockers and whatnot when they were teenagers and then they started reading French philosophy and they got all ironic and self-depreciating.

I was reading something else on this site, and thought to myself “How come Irony isn’t on the list, yet?” And then I looked, and it was. Creepy…

Irony Hall of Fame No. 1 White Person, my hero
Thank you.

THANK YOU for touching on the “ever so humorous” white trash irony (haha, that was me being ironic! :) ) Growing up I WAS the white trash family in the upper-middle class neighborhood. The “white trash irony” was lost on me…because it was my reality! But my experience in college and now in working in the very white field of finance, I am surrounded by these people, so now I can see how they find white trash ironic.

Keep up the posts!

Of course he isn’t using the word irony in the it’s correct context. The author of this blog is referring to what these other people are classifying as irony. Dumbfucks. Stop taking things so seriously. Ugh. Everyone is so uptight.

dont white people also love reading the onion?

a little irony or stupidity perhaps, white people who say “some of my best friends are black” and they actually are, yet they feel they have to say it anyway…….what?

Thanks for mentioning that movie ‘The Marine’. The plot summary looks pretty good. I’ll have to rent it…

Mr. Burger Thief on April 1, 2008 at 2:44 pm

It’s cheese.

Is it ironic that I’m white, like Vin Diesel movies and P.O.D., and yes we love reading the onion!

Do you know what else white people like? They like to have jobs. They like to have nice houses with clean yards. They like to have children who behave themselves. They like to go on vacations to explore more than just their neighborhood.
They also like to hear people talk shit about white people – because, as everyone knows, he who talks shit is most jealous. So, keep it up, we are waiting for the next laugh!

All I can say is THANK GOD Alanis Morrisette is Canadian or we would never have heard then end of it from the Brits!

Kathy Maddox on April 15, 2008 at 3:10 am

Come on white people learn to be the butt of the joke for once. Laugh at the strange things that you all gravitate towards. And for all of you who don’t don’t think this blog is representative of people from the South, believe me some things mentioned are. So what! Whole Foods = Piggly Wiggly in the South, etc. etc. you can find correlations I am sure.

Kathy Maddox,
The list would be very different if it focussed on the South. But much would remain the same.

I do not think “Piggly-Wiggly” when I think “whole foods” where did THAT come from.

Aww, are you implying that white people don’t like Vin Diesel movies because he’s…part black?

I only recently found out he was part black, I always thought he was Jewish or something. Never doubted it for a second.

Anyway, who doesn’t love irony?

Go fuck yourself.

Ironic outcome: NPR covering this funny-as-hell blog (there was even an ad for This American Life on the sidebar).

I never have less than a dozen empty Mickey’s bottles… is that “ironic,” or am I a stinkin drunk? Shit.

This blog is so safe.

“the reason that white people love irony is that it lets them have some fun and feel better about themselves.”

Fuck that! I’m so fucking tired about hearing about white guilt! Sure it may seem like guilt on the surface, but this type of irony is actually a mask for prejudice. The fact that so many rich white people ironize lower classes is not ironic because it’s entirely expected: rich whites doing absolutely nothing for the poor because THEY DON’T CARE. Point blank.

Too bad it’s not a requirement in the States the all white people read Marx, at least to understand what it means to be a “petty bourgeouis.”

Ive come on this to the conclusion that the reason white people like all of the shit on this website is the following:
If you got it like that why not experience more with your life.
Shit I golf, snowboard, rockclimb, mountain bike, live in manhattan, drive a fat asS bmw suv, fuck asian women, have plenty of black friends, got sweaters and motherfuckin t-shirts that I’LL wear on a plane to San FraCisco if I damn well fell like it. Shit Ill Even invite my lawyer to my beach house on a sunday for coffee maybe some tea while we read the fuckin New York Times. Yes the Liberal rag that sweats Barack Obama. After that we will indulge in some microbrews on my vintage sail boat.

When I get Bored ill travel the fuck where I want probably to snowboard somewhere usually Utah the whitest fuckin state there is. Ill take in some wine before I watch a film at sundance while I am there.

Just for a challenge I will go to a farmers market get some organic shit go home and order some sushi. You see I am trying to get in shape to run a fuckin marathon. After I finish the first thing I am going to do is shut of my i-pod loaded with free music, grab some bottled water and spark a fat mother fuckin spliff!!!!

Haavard from Norway on November 18, 2008 at 1:53 am

Isn’t it ironic that this entry is completely incompatible with many others on this blog, especially the one on being offended?

This list of things “white people” like is more specifically American than most people here realize. Over here in Europe, no “white” person would totally sincerely denounce anyone for using a politically incorrect term for a person of a particular ethnic group, or totally sincerely profess enjoyment of classical music when they actually are into it, except for Albinoni’s Adagio and O Fortuna. If they did any of these things, they would be laughed at as unsophisticated and pretentious at the same time. Ditto for people who are dead serious about being e.g. vegans or eating organic food.

This is true at least in the UK and in Norway (where I live), but possibly not in all European countries (definitely not Sweden or Germany, whose people, like Americans, are Serious with a capital S). And we are as white as they come…

This blog should be called “Stuff young American WASP liberals with higher education like”.

Haavard from Norway on November 18, 2008 at 1:55 am

edit: should be “or totally sincerely profess enjoyment of classical music when they are NOT into it”

most white people in this country are republicans. most republicans (by far) are white people. this website propagates the myth that by being liberal, white people are somehow subjugating other subcultures in our society.

As a white liberal, I think Rico’s comment propogates the myth that I don’t subjugate other subcultures in our society. I assure you I do at every opportunity, usually with a pat on the head.

Ah, but Rico is a step ahead of you, Cliffie. He – She actually – is a white woman posing as an Hispanic man, and thus propagating the myths that all non-whites are dirty Mexicans, and that all stupid people are men. Chinese are not technically Mexican (although most blacks are), and several groups of women, including fetal alcohol cases, “midgets”, and Scientologists are quite stupid as well.

You missed two whole LAYERS of irony there – shame on you. No soy lattes for two weeks, and you have to watch the Chevy Chase/Richard Pryor SNL sketch 50 times, claiming each time that it’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen. Racist.

White people like pretending to pretend to be racist. It’s kinda fun.

Tony, can you give back a few days of lattes for using both “subjugate” and “subcultures” in a one sentance irony post. Thems sum skillz!

The intentionally lost scene of SNL isn’t the most outrageous thing on American TV, I was 9 years old when I watched Andrew Dice Clay perform live (and uncensored) on the MTV Video Music awards. His “nursery rhymes” made me laugh my head off…sexual innuendo, bodily functions, foul language and ethnic stereotypes. Here’s one I know of: “Hickery, Dickery, Bop. You’re Mom is a Wh*re and he is not your pop. She’s a Jew whom gone out with a Wop…” He was banned from MTV for life (and still is on the black list). +

Two more lines from the comical genius Andrew Dice Clay circa 1990 LIVE on MTV:
“Mary had a @#$%^&* lamb…”
“Jack and Jill went up to the hill, to smoke mary-juana, Jack got high and unzipped his fly, but Jill said I don’t @#$%^&* wanna”.
“The old woman beat up her kids, send them to the attic and told them you can’t watch the MTV VMA tonight.”

Rico,

I think this is more targeted at young urban white people, not just white people.

This site is targeted at young urban white people…? WTF are you from?

gosh, i hate to do this but rico, your logic is flawed. it begs the question and your claim is not supported by any relevant premises. try taking a ethics class like critical thinking or something and you can post intelligently… like me.

Ironically, I don’t get this one at all.

The wrong kind of white on December 5, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Really all of these comments ruin satirical sites. People who get angry and type in some little rant, while funny, just expose themselves as the type of “white” people this site is lampooning. The people who claim to identify with almost everything on the list are just bad people. If you even identify with half the stuff on this list you need your ass kicked on a daily basis. Then the most pathetic people of all are the ones that really think American whites are like this. Those are the ones that truly don’t understand satire and parody. Especially the idiotic out of touch Europeans. They really are laughable. Although it is fun to laugh at the stupidity of these people it just reminds me of how dumb and sheep like all of humanity really is.

“…it just reminds me of how dumb and sheep like all of humanity really is.”

How’s the view from your parents’ basement, big guy?

I think its funny how many people have used this blog as a soapbox to preach about there own personal……moronic, self centered, egotistical, one minded beliefs, like writing a bitter, overly worded paragraph to make complete strangers, might actually make the forementioned strangers think for 10 seconds that you might be smarter then you must feel you are. If you dont understand what i am saying, you are one of these people,if you do understand and disagree with what i have typed here, your one of these, if you type to people, with full intentions of trying to make them feel dumb for typing there thoughts into a internet blog page….chances are you are one of these people.

Black people like Irony too but they don’t use it as hypocritical as white people

the average white person in America, as you’re stereotyping, doesn’t know what he/she likes because Political Correctness has influenced them to think in a stupid, abstract way. Jews have corrupted the greatest people who’ve ever walked this earth.

This blog has nothing to do with whites. It is about the upper middle class.

This is the greatest site…EVER. I am a upper-middle class AA woman, and I have found a little slice of heaven. I frequently read the articles out loud to any and every White person who will listen. Although it is a little disturbing that I like most of the entries on the list: grammar, board games, dogs etc, I will probably buy a copy for my kindle to read wearing one of my numerous peacoats, walking my dog, and listening to slow Jazz on the way to Whole foods. Good times.

I agree with you Mo, but the irony is for most of the last 50 years whenever a black person or family moves in a white neighborhood, the majority of whites start to move out like a mystical cosmic force takes hold. Housing segregation by custom remains, it’s strongest effect can be observed in So. Cal. whenever a Latino or Asian moves in, they morphed to new ethnic enclaves in 10 or 20 years. My Mom still lives in a formerly mostly white-turned 90% Latino section of Indio east of Palm Springs. +

the greatest irony is this blog as a whole, its fucking hilarious! love it. and to have a topic called ‘irony’…

The blog writer showed up his girlfriends he keeps in his attic/basement (thinks of “Kiss the girls” and the real life Ted Bundy, the 80s “preppy killer”). For some reason, I reckon they are all pregnant, on crystal meth and may have a mild form of retardation. +

CatholicAngst on January 9, 2009 at 10:49 pm

I agree with that. I think that describes what is an ironic fad. I believe that an ‘ironic fad’ is something so out, it’s now in. Years ago, it was those trucker caps you talked about. A few years before that, it was those black plastic 60′s style glasses. Now it’s skinny jeans, even on guys. I think it takes a certain look or thing to be so despised or so frequently dissed as ‘forever out’ that some crazy guy decides to bring it back in style and it’s not all that long until white people buy up that irony and it becomes all the rage again.

Don’t forget that not everybody, including a few white people, buy the ‘so uncool it’s cool’ irony. There are still those that stubbornly believe that in is in and out is out, period!

Kristy from GA on January 16, 2009 at 12:56 pm

What’s ironic is I see just as many as black people (or more) wearing skinny jeans…

really? i don’t believe i’ve ever seen a black male in skinny jeans…

Irony often gets mistaken for sarcasm.

Which of course is ironic. Howzatt for a cultural drift from an English swine-hood.

Which is of course ironic. Etc

Sarcasm is a form of irony.

louiecoolgato on January 16, 2009 at 5:18 pm

irony 1 |ˈīrənē; ˈiərnē|
noun ( pl. -nies)
the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect

sarcasm |ˈsärˌkazəm|
noun
the use of IRONY to mock or convey contempt

louiecoolgato on January 16, 2009 at 5:19 pm

contempt |kənˈtem(p)t|
noun
the feeling that a person or a thing is beneath consideration, worthless, or deserving scorn

I need to be even more dull and blunt:
Irony described here, is about class– People from the upper middle (professional) class imitating people from the working class. Not todays working class– “whatever was going on 10/20 years ago”.
I think it’s that simple, but we are confused because America is a classless society.
Isn’t it?

My father was a psychoanylist, my mother the head of the cultural anthropology department at a private college in the North East.
If I started to become a dedicated fan of the WWF what would I be, besides a snot?
Burlesque was the WWF of it’s day. It seems innocent and lovely now. If I do that, and Betty Page my look, is that better? Is nostalgia nicer?

I know to ask the question because of my education in cultural anthropology, btw. Should I hide that fact?

Should I take David Byrne–of the Talking Heads and graduate of the expensive and prestigious Rhode Island School of Design–that his favorite form of art is ice sculpture.
Did Andy Warhol mean it when he said things like that?

Would anyone reply and tell their class backgound?
What does it say about you, besides everything, I mean.

evilingar,
you’re dull all right. Obvious too. Don’t you know a joke isn’t supposed to be explained. Academic bred bimbo.

Sarcasm is a sense of humor for the (um should I say this kindly) sophisicated without a college degree? Or one who’s IQ is higher than a door knob? Or a 5 year old gets it. SWPL is not for people with no lifes, all races and classes welcome to read and reply (or in O’reilly’s words: to opine). +

evilyn garnett on January 28, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Sarcasm is irony with less formal education. The hipster-inflicted irony SWPl describes involves people with a specific kind education mocking people with less of that education.
Whether it’s funny or cruel depends on whose got the power.
Who does?
Who has the power?

“I’ve got the power!” and “It’s gettin’, it’s gettin’, it’s gettin’ kinda hectic” :)

or mistake for like nostalgia/retro stuff?

*keep it white*

You know, everything in this Stuff White People Like blog can be boiled down to this:

White people have a desperate need to feel superior to other white people.

They need to be cooler.
They need to be greener.
They need to be more culturally aware.
They need to be more tolerant.
They need to think more globally and act more locally.

This desperate need comes from an inner insecurity, an insecurity that will never go away until the white person repudiates forever his need to be superior, and embraces his inner nerd/geek/spaz/dork/redneck/yooper and wallows in his uncool cravings and propensities with unironic enthusiasm.

From living the “Greek life” of sunny southern California by the beach…to living in the “sticks” of the northern Cal. mountains. I thought the previous 20 year trend of whites with money moved from the rightist conservative corporate capitalist majority…to the leftist liberal radical socialist elite, was one of those weird psychological-pathological phases white people of all classes goes through. Admit it whitey, you admire the GOP and the KKK…the irony of protecting white privilege and supremacy. +

It is ironic how many white people are in this forum honestly dissecting irony and sarcasm, to the length of quoting dictionary entries, to try and establish how cool and superior they are.

But maybe I’m just being sarcastic.

Irony: Most white Americans would fit this profile, except one thing is missing: Old MONEY inherited down from generation to the next. Yuppies are the ones who must work in the office for money, although many of them are like card-carrying members (drones) of the WASP elite. +

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Anglo-Saxon_Protestant

I hate all of this irony crap.
It’s bullshit!
All of the kids in my school thrive on irony and wear things like the all too popular t-shirt “Frankie Say Relax” and go flaunting it, saying “Dude, Frankie Said Relax!” and laugh heartily.
I don’t even think they know that shirt has to do with Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s biggest hit “Relax” and not with a weird thing some guy said. It disgusts me and I prefer Old-School than Irony when it comes to shirts.

If I see another person with a forgotten 80′s band shirt and they tell me they don’t know the band, I’m going to rip that shirt of their chest.

Until reading this thread I honestly thought Americans just got irony wrong, now I realise they have changed the definition. For the rest of the English speaking world irony is something like being struck and killed by an ambulance. An unexpected almost contradictory twist in events.

evilyngarnett on February 3, 2009 at 9:45 pm

That is one definition.
I don’t know what country you hail from, but in the rest of the language speaking world, a word can often have more than one meaning. Also lots of different definitions.
Is definition different from meaning?…

Pertinent point. Common meaning UK, Australia & NZ. Can’t vouch for other parts of the world. Also general Americanisation of language means that US definition has started to creep in to usage in my country, Australia.

Ozzy, you were right the first time. Your meaning is the original correct one. Americans think irony is sarcasm or facetiousness or paradox or kitschness because they don’t understand the concept of irony. If they did they would use one of those perfectly appropriate, correct terms in its place.

The paradox (or as they would say irony) is that this misunderstanding leads to a new meaning of the word as the ignorance spreads and grows, and then this new meaning becomes accepted, eventually finding its way into the dictionary.

This usually eventually enriches the English language, although it is excruciating to live through and witness, and occasionally it can even lead to a word having two contradictory meanings (for example the verb and noun forms of sanction).

Therefore, what evilyngarnett says is – paradoxically – both correct and incorrect and you are – painfully – both right and wrong.

Ironically, while I too am from Australia and understand the original correct meaning of irony, I use the common American meaning all the time and I don’t have a problem with it.

I’m also a painful white person crapping on about something I don’t really know that much about…

just me commenting here is super white. but i am avoiding writing a paper for a course at my ivy league university, on a mac, wearing used $3 pair of shoes, a $5 dress and $30 bra and $12 underwear. Soooo that’s where i’m at.

But I believe, obviously, that coloquial changes in the meaning of language is all part of the natural developement. Language is only useful if there is an agreed upon meaning–even if that societal definition differs from the current O.E.D. entry.

There are many forms of Irony. One of which is the most commonly sited, which is what you mentioned earlier—A situation where something occurs that is markedly opposite of what one would expect to occur.

yet the definition or understanding under which wear a D.A.R.E t-shirt falls is in the adverbial form. It is not ironic to do that, but it can be done “ironically”. Ironically is more about the intention of the perpetrator (wearer, artist, person, hipster) than about the actual situation. I suppose in this definition “ironically” is the antithesis of “earnestly”.

How ’bout reading this entire blog, like I just have. That’s past irony, it just plain fucked up.

White folks’ drive to be “hipper than thou” is painfully well-known to anyone who made it through any four-year college, and has had to work with their fellow graduates. The bottom line here is that over-educated people can be extremely insufferable in their pretentiousness, preachiness, and their know-it-all-ness. The irony is that whenever such people run into anyone with actual knowledge of the topic on which they intended to hold forth, they all slink off whispering under their breaths about the knowledgeable person being such a rude and obtuse grind. It is my belief that if these people had to actually pass their knowledge to other human beings as a measure of their humaneness, then these very same hipsters would end up acting a lot more humbly.

Finally, someone with a brain! Christ I was beginning to lose all hope. I figured everyone commenting on this blog was a fucking moron! I think Lander is brilliant, irreverent and hilarious. Can’t anyone laugh at themselves anymore? Especially white folks, and I’m on of them.

You got to admit the White trash wannabee thing caught on…and hopefully to be discarded into the pop culture attic or should I say trash bin. Classism never felt so wrong but it feels so right…and does elitism feel so good? +

OK, irony is freakin’ hilarious, but most people who try too hard end up looking lame.

I was at a bar a few years ago which looked OK, so I suppressed an reflexive eye-roll when a bearded bartender wearing an outdated hipster uniform asked for my drink order. Feeling adventurous but holding no hope for success, I ordered the drink I really wanted. The Paul Frank clad-trucker hat wearing-flannel shirt bartender made me the most perfect Sapphire martini, extra cold and dirty. NOW I saw the irony. Funny and tasty!

It creates a stronger sense superiority than would doing something actually cool in earnest. It give the impression that one is SO above whatever item or type of person they are ironicizing, that they wear them as if they are cool (meaning they are so CLEARLY not.)

I'm white and love grammar...so sue me. on April 7, 2009 at 1:44 pm

I believe you mean “cited” not sited. I’d mock you further but your Ivy League degree clearly did not impart to you any assistance in the grammar or spelling department and jumping on your misspelling of such a simple word is enough to make me feel warm and fuzzy.

hey man,

I never said i wasn’t a shitty speller or grammarian. I don’t see why going to an ivy league school automatically makes you a douche bag (sp??). I was just as happy and shocked to get in here as anyone else would have been. I hate to even tell people where i go to school because they automatically think i assume i’m better than everyone else, when, in fact, attending such an institution is every humbling because you are constantly surrounded by people whose level of succes is nearly impossible to match. so yeah, sorry i fucked up my spelling, but maybe respond to the point i proposed rather than attacking me, unprovoked.

hc

That’s why the blog post on Ivy League Universities was so genius. Everyone else thinks that because you go to a great school, everything you say is bound to be tainted with a sense of intellectual superiority or entitlement – that you’re presumptuous enough to think you have the last word on any matter of intellectual debate because of the prestigious name above your degree. I can see, just like anyone who isn’t nursing a chip on his/her shoulder, that you’re just participating harmlessly in a discussion. So, “my 3 cents” I empathize.

Mr. ‘cited’-not-’sited’ (aka I’m white and love grammar…so sue me) enjoy your meaningless triumph. You crossed intellectual swords with the greatest wit of the Ivy League and emerged the victor! … Or you could just realize that you corrected the spelling of some kid’s post on a blog. We’re all just a bunch of decent, hardworking kids who busted our butts in High School to get here and are frankly tired of people trying to find something to tear down every time we open our mouths.

Ad hominem some more please…

Ad hominem applies when someone is trying to refute your argument. He is mocking you and calling you a pretentious douche quite unworthy of any college position especially one with any reputation, not trying to refute your argument. I, myself, am being pedantic, another thing white people love.

hey isn’t irony marvellous?

I’ve actually come to realize that it’s not; it’s more like the devil’s scourge. As mentioned above but rewritten: one is not allowed to do anything seriously or earnestly without being mocked for it; you have to do it with a ready smile in case your audience doesn’t find your achievement kosher.

It also stuns me a little bit, that you don’t lift your own writing to a level where you could banter with the tendency to make fun of white people’s predilections.
I can sign up to almost all of the items on your list, so maybe I’m not the one to cast a stone.
But as it is now I find one item on your list to be missing:

#124 Distance to and bantering about everything.

Whilst white people want to be unique they have to vilify everybody and everything, to be sure they don’t take anything to seriously.

It is neither okay to go to South East Asia for three months because in that case you are like everybody else; nor is it okay to go to Galapagos Islands for six months; because then you are just trying to be special.

It’s not okay to listen to Leona Lewis or Britney Spears; on the other hand it’s not okay to listen to Andrew Bird or Antony and The Johnsons either; because the your just trying to be difficult.

Of course you’re not allowed to read Dan Brown and maybe not even Paulo Coelho; but if you read Proust and Joyce you are bit too much.

Obviously one is not even allowed to think about the animals and environment because then one is a hypocrite. Of course it’s natural that people who can afford being a vegetarian and buying organic food does it to greater extent than the not so rich; but does this make it a less charitable action?

I don’t really know what I tried to say with this except that it’s pretty Ironic that Irony is a #post when the lack of distance in the blog is pretty flagrant.

Correct me if im wrong but your arguement is basically that there is a “damned if you do damned if you don’t” context that exists in everything that “white people” do. This is true, but its not exclusive to “white people”, black people have the same damn problem, as do asians, as do any visable ethnicity.

What the hell are you trying to say exactly? That i can’t make fun of or laugh at someone just because i can? That I have to have a reason for calling someone a shit fucking douche licker? I rain down my misanthropy on anyone or anything that happens to strike my fancy. But for some reason I have to pull my punches because someone somewhere might have a good reason for what they do? If you feel like listening to Britney Spears or The Johnsons then fucking do it, stop looking for approval from society for the things that you like. Also, don’t expect everyone to like what you like. It’s only a problem because fart-knockers like you make it a problem.

The point of this blog is that everyone and everything deserves to have a little fun poked at them once in while. The point of comedy is to point out the inconsistencies in life in such way to make people laugh. For one the implication that white people have a monopoly on the misuse or indeed the over use of stupid ironies is not neccessarily true accross the board. Doesn’t mean that i won’t or shouldn’t laugh at it.

I knew a ton of White people whom listen (and then quit) to Vanessa Carlton, Natasha Bedingfeld, the White Stripes, FOB boy, Jon Mayer and Franz Fernandid…after I announce who they were FIRST. I’m not as white as they are, don’t earn over 100k a year and whose parents broke up or divorced. I see the irony in my lifes with theirs. +

Apparently someone wants to show off what an impressive vocabulary they have.

Clearly my earlier post was baseless and childish. It was intended to be. At least it was readable and not written to show off my vocabulary. When you need to link to link to definitions of words you are using you are, in fact, a douche bag.

*not copy and pasted, though this does reiterate my earlier post

for people not willing to read the above post in its entirety heres the abridged version:

Why does everyone have their panties up in a knot. This is absolutely hilarious. Everyone that goes to my university is like this, at least everyone I hang out with. And I’m not white. Maybe white people reading this get upset but, you laugh your faces off when you listen to Russell Peters. I cringe a little, being East Indian, but then also laugh my ass off. So why not just chill out.

Dude its not the article that is the problem. I find it hilarious and I even do some of these things myself. My problem was someone responding to a joke about stereotypes, by being a stereotype, and crying Ad Hominem when someone pointed what a douche they were.

I like irony because its the world not agreeing with itself
i always wanted to die an ironic death..
theres no shame in liking things white people like

White people are afraid of death, they never talk about it in polite company, though the media won’t stop talking about Michael Jackson’s death from like 2 months ago. The irony is life’s a b*tch then you die…and one of 2 things certain in life: death…and taxes. +

Damit. I hate when Hezbollah tries to recruit in my own back yard. Israel’s Arab enemies make me so sad … think I’ll just lay back and imagine some Palestinian shacks being demolished and a settler condo being built over them to cheer me up :) )

What do white Christians, Israeli Jews & Palestinian Arabs have in common? They are perceived as hateful bigots use violence or terrorism to get their way. Carter was able to bring Egypt and Israel to accept peace by offers of olive breaches, a Christian thinks he can teach the teachings of Jesus (peace) to Judaists and Muslims. LOL! +

White trash vs. White elite, the battle of the 21st century or the new millennia (the ”00s are just the beginning). The trash people are actually middle-class and the elite are gonna lose everything. I’m waiting for #130, This Web Site and #131, Pseudo-Self-Denigratingly Making Fun Of White People Exactly Like Themselves.

hahahahahaha it should…there are so many idiots on this site who cant identify that it is all a JOKE…

Exactly right. The author of this blog, while often hilarious, is simply trying to elevate himself into some new category of self-deprecation/inteligensia. By pointing out all of the “wrong” reasons for liking something, or claiming that all people like something for the same reason, the author demonstrates his correct knowledge and condescendingly further removes himself from the dreaded “mainstream”. Pointing out stuff slyly isn’t always humorous, but divisive and elitist. I’m waiting for the next wave of people, those who point out people who point out things, and so on ;)

You hit the nail on the head. Every single entry on this site sounds like it was created by a former hipster who is desperately, and pathetically trying to retain his individuality the only way he knows how: by tearing down everything other people do. The message of this site should be this:

If you’re white, just kill yourself because nothing you do is sincere.

The deal is that “those” type of white people can be associated with 80% of the stuff white people like. That’s funny. I find it funny because I know EXACTLY the type of people that fit this mold. I’m more of a hick, which is why I think it’s hilarious, not ironic.

You know what’s ironic? All the white people complaining that a song called ironic contains no irony missing the fact that it’s ironic that the song contains no actual irony.

You know what’s ironic? The fact that you don’t realize the song was trying to be ironic but it failed in the end.

Well, not really. Irony is where something occurs contrary to what you believe would happen. Saying that something’s ironic because it contains no irony is like saying something’s a joke when it wasn’t.

Oh, and the verse:
“Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
“Well isn’t this nice…”"

Was actually an incident of irony. So… even if what you said were true and that it would be ironic if it had no irony, it actually did have irony so it’s not ironic. Irony’s ironic, isn’t it? (Actually, what I just pointed out wasn’t ironic. Damn you and your confusion with misfortunate circumstances/coincidence being confused for irony, mainstream culture!)

This is actually called “coincidence”

‘K’ you have hit the nail on the head.

this is depressing. Decisions I thought i made have actually been made a million times by people just like me, apparently. and what I thought was just me doing what feels right is actually just me conforming to the non-conformity of white popular culture, even though this website it self is that, taken to the next level to actually try to convince people that the author conforms to non-confomity in a rather clever way. Thus he conforms to non-conformity….so in esence everything you do makes you a stupid conformist wheather you are conforming or not, and no matter which tier of conformity you fit in; the comformists, the non comformists, or the people who poke fun at the people who are non-conformists for trying to be different thus holding the same “look at me i’m above them” values of all of them. christ allmighty pop culture scares the fuck out of me

@ Alexa: I think a lot of you have problems understanding these are just broad funny stereotypes that apply to the current (young 20-30′s) white population of the USA. OF COURSE black people, and Asian, and Latino people do some of these things. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SAY YOU ARE BLACK AND YOU DO THIS TOO (no one cares! these are just funny WHITE stereotypes). and Of course all white people don’t do all these things. These are just FUNNY STEREOTYPES that are oddly and recently very prevalent in American White culture. I am very guilty (and not guilty) of a lot of these. I think it is really funny. I live in Japan, have an Asian girlfriend, like mos def, used to make movies, wanted to be a writer, like to camp, etc, etc. No I don’t do yoga and don’t really like tea… and I am NOT going to be all defensive and complain that this list is stupid and I guess I am not white cause I don’t drink wine. Just enjoy this for what it is. BROAD STEREOTYPES. one more thing. Stop being so defensive. You don’t need to post on every thing that you DON’T do, “I don’t do …..” whatever. good for you.

here is an idea for the next item. Stuff white people like: not having a sense of humor or being remotely opened minded.

Alexa, I’m white and I now hate: white people who vote republican, television, Vin Diesel movies, SUVs, fast food, and your WHITE family…..or am do I actually love them ironically?
