#78 Multilingual Children

All white people want their children to speak another language. There are no exceptions. They dream about the children drifting in between French and English sentences as they bustle about the kitchen while they read the New York Times and listen to Jazz.
As white people age, they start to feel more and more angry with their parents for raising them in a monolingual home. At some point in their lives, most white people attempt to learn a second language and are generally unable to get past ordering in a restaurant or over-pronouncing a few key words. This failure is not attributed to their lack of effort, but rather their parents who didn’t teach them a new language during their formative years.
White people believe that if they had been given French language instruction when they were younger, their lives would have turned out very differently. Instead of living in the US, they would be living and working abroad for the United Nations or some other organization with a headquarters in Switzerland or The Hague.
Generally, white people prefer their children to speak French. Advanced white people will actually spend outrageous amounts of money to send their children to a Lycee or Ecole Francaise. But the vast majority will abandon their dreams when they realize that need a second mortgage so their child can have a better study abroad experience in France.
Languages such as German, Spanish, Swedish, or Italian are also acceptable, but are considered to be poor substitutes (especially Spanish). At the time of writing, it is still considered expert-level white person behavior to have white children speaking Asian and African languages.
There is only one way to use this information to your advantage: speaking another language means that white people are more likely to want to have children with you. It is seen as a cheaper alternative to language schools.

I grew up in the ’80s, the time when white people began to chill out over ethnic things, an example of the first years of Spanish-language television (circa KVEA 52 Corona, Cal. in the Los Angeles area) despite an Anglo boy like me seen some of this stuff, and only if I can learn it this easy.
Good, I’m glad white people (in America) value multilingualism these days because last time i checked the majority were voting for “english only” laws and trying to solidify cultural superiority through monolingualism. Yay, progress!

The best way a child can be multilingual is have one or two parents (and in some cases, grandparents from another country), my father is from France whose hometown faces the Flemish-speaking region of Flandre near the Belgian border, and my part-Cherokee/Osage Indian mother from the Los Angeles area where many Hispanics, Asians and southern Europeans lived by the pier of Redondo Beach, now taken over by blond, blue-eyed, beach-going whites with a deep suntan. +
Multilingualism is a good skill to emigrate out of America when the economy continues to collapse, where English is not the business language and by the way things are goin with multiculturalism or diversity, your kids must learn 5 or 6 languages to get by in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. +
I get a kick of how many people responding fall right into this category. He’s poking fun of the upper middle class whites who try so hard to be cultured due to their shame of being white and successful. This is a sin in America nowadays.
My french immersion education and I are a telling sign of this one
I don’t have any kids, but if I do have some I want them to be multi-lingual, I grew up in Ireland and only speak a little Gaelic, which I regret, would love to inflict gaelic on my kids, also, french, spanish, italian, chiniese, greek and any other I can, I have friends of all sorts of descent, my plan is to have them babysit as often as possible and get them to speak thier native language around my kids all the time, thus forcing them to learn! I know, I know, I’m so white right now!
White people like…to be “Irish” speak Gaelic and listen to new age retro-neo-quasio-psuedo-Irish rock music from Enya to the Coors to Eurythmetics. If you wanna be Irish to the max, convert to Roman Catholicism, drink Guinness beer and go live in the green rural hell known as Kerry or Galway, where most of the Irish left from to America. +
Nothing as sad as an American TRYING to speak french (or any other language except spanish maybe)
They fail at any attemt and only make a fool out of them and their culture!
Don’t try to copy the Europeans who are multiligual.
I for example, am raised in dutch, then french, then english, then german, then spanish and now urdu.
Americans don’t have the habit of learning another language because they are so selfcentered and NOW they want to learn it because it’s ‘cool’ and ‘sophisticated’ and ‘alternative’

It amazes me that anyone Dutch would have anything to say about Americans, when they are currently hording Turks, Moroccans, and other minorities that they don’t like into ghettos and creating an atmosphere of hatred in Amsterdam and elsewhere. Just because you think you’re enlightened doesn’t mean you are.
And I would have to say that it’s to America’s credit that we’re trying to learn a new language even though we don’t have to. Unlike the Dutch, we didn’t have a bunch of different nations invading us throughout history forcing us to learn their language, so it’s a matter of interest rather than necessity. And if I spoke the most gutteral, goofy and irritating language in the world “Dutch” I would learn another language too.

you are ridiculous. If every state in the U.S. spoke a different language (ie Europe) than we would all learn 2-3 languages growing up. As it is, if you have a general grasp of spanish, you can roam two continents and not have a problem.
It’s not that we’re inferior because we don’t learn it. It’s that we don’t have any f*cking use for it.

i just want you to know you’re not completely accurate with your statement. not ALL Americans try to learn another language “because its cool”, some, maybe, i guess, but me on the other hand, i taught myself some German, learned some Arabic and Dutch from friends, and even went to school for American Sign Language.

I’m part White and part Hispanic. I am TOTALLY HATING those that said Spanish is a poor substitute or only for the working class. Spanish is a Romance language and when spoken correctly it sounds beautiful. IGNORANT IDIOTS!!!

Don’t sweat it, they’re white, most ignorant, and well…accept the fact that us Hispanics and our language are…let’s just say, not considered “awesome” because we are the largest minority in the US of A and “take up jobs and don’t pay taxes” that’s why Spanish is considered a poor alternative…we have a bad rep in this country and White ignorance supports that bad rep by ripping on us for migrating here in the first place.
Tell that to the blogger who has an “allergy” to the black race or “melanin intolerance” to the slightest bronze skin, the Hispanic population in the US is actually bilingual and not “refusing” to learn/adapt English in a world where tele communications and media has tons of American English slang words. Puerto Rico was under the U.S. flag since 1899 and millions of Puerto Ricans live in the mainland U.S. where English is a must to learn and acquire as Americans.
I also find interesting yet true Japan, China, most of east Asia and the whole “UN”, school children are required and encouraged to learn a second language (esp. English) to get an academic college admission or in a highly-paid career profession. The Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Mongolia has 3 languages to learn: whether it is Dutch, French, German, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish or Italian. It’s the legacy of European colonialism in east Asia. +
I’m black and I think people are really bogus when they say those things. those people are just ignorant. They always give people who are not white a bad rep. What you said about hispanics which is so unfair and what they say about blacks they need to suck it up about slavery and we are all druggies and idiots and asians. its so uncool really when is this going to stop?

Given that Latin is the true romance language, that encompasses Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and many others. I got laughed at for trying to learn a “dead” language, but i learned all the derivatives of it in really short times.
The Roman Catholic church used to have Latin rite mass to unite multiple language-speaking followers before Vatican II in 1966 abandoned the Latin rite mass. My Dad was raised Catholic and was concerned on English, Spanish, French-Canadian and Dutch-Fleming speaking masses are dividing the church into new ones, it can become schisms. +
