I think liberals envy the french for some reason nobody in their right mind could fathom. Unless they were completely ignorant of history, and current affairs, or had never been to France. Good luck with the Asian languages, I lived and worked all over South Korea and Japan for 10 years and married a Japanese woman. I just don’t have the time it would require to devote to learning either fluently.
I was an Army brat in Germany and Belgium, and a contractor in Afghanistan and Iraq. My Dad didn’t want me to join the Army, and my country didn’t call on me when I was of age. After 9/11 I was too old to soldier, so I went and helped out the only way I could. While I appreciate very much your thoughts on our men and women in the military, I never had the priviledge of serving with them in uniform.

First, thank you for your service to our country. Your loss of the French language probably stems from America’s envy/scorn at the French. I have been learning French (as a third language) for over 30 years and still not fluent, but I still love it. It is much easier than Mandarin and Korean (hangul?) which I am learning as 4th and 5th language respectively.

As an Army brat, I did live in french and german speaking countries and learned both languages. So unipressed were we with the french people that it wasn’t much of a loss that we never practiced it and forgot it. I kind of miss the German though.
I did marry Asian and my kids are bi-lingual. Go figure.

Is that enough, or did you want to practice your English?
It amazes me that anyone Dutch would have anything to say about Americans, when they are currently hording Turks, Moroccans, and other minorities that they don’t like into ghettos and creating an atmosphere of hatred in Amsterdam and elsewhere. Just because you think you’re enlightened doesn’t mean you are.
And I would have to say that it’s to America’s credit that we’re trying to learn a new language even though we don’t have to. Unlike the Dutch, we didn’t have a bunch of different nations invading us throughout history forcing us to learn their language, so it’s a matter of interest rather than necessity. And if I spoke the most gutteral, goofy and irritating language in the world “Dutch” I would learn another language too.

In America, white people expected everyone to know a second language despite for 200 years, we had the “learn English or GTFO” rule. It’s sad that many French-speaking American communities didn’t maintain the language as much, how come Louisiana is perceived culturally unique? The WASP households don’t want their kids to become emotionally close to fraternize with non-English speaking housemaids or gardeners, why not speak to them in Spanish or Tagalog/Filipino or some other language?
