#101 Being Offended

To be offended is usually a rather unpleasant experience, one that can expose a person to intolerance, cultural misunderstandings, and even evoke the scars of the past. This is such an unpleasant experience that many people develop a thick skin and try to only be offended in the most egregious and awful situations. In many circumstances, they can allow smaller offenses to slip by as fighting them is a waste of time and energy. But white people, blessed with both time and energy, are not these kind of people. In fact there are few things white people love more than being offended.
Naturally, white people do not get offended by statements directed at white people. In fact, they don’t even have a problem making offensive statements about other white people (ask a white person about “flyover states”). As a rule, white people strongly prefer to get offended on behalf of other people.
It is also valuable to know that white people spend a significant portion of their time preparing for the moment when they will be offended. They read magazines, books, and watch documentaries all in hopes that one day they will encounter a person who will say something offensive. When this happens, they can leap into action with quotes, statistics, and historical examples. Once they have finished lecturing another white person about how it’s wrong to use the term “black” instead of “African-American,” they can sit back and relax in the knowledge that they have made a difference.
White people also get excited at the opportunity to be offended at things that are sexist and/or homophobic. Both cases offering ample opportunities for lectures, complaints, graduate classes, lengthy discussions and workshops. All of which do an excellent job of raising awareness among white people who hope to change their status from “not racist” to “super not racist.”
Another thing worth noting is that the threshold for being offended is a very important tool for judging and ranking white people. Missing an opportunity to be outraged is like missing a reference to Derrida-it’s social death.
If you ever need to make a white person feel indebted to you, wait for them to mention a book, film, or television show that features a character who is the same race as you, then say “the representation of <insert race> was offensive and if you can’t see that, well, you need to do some soul searching.” After they return from their hastily booked trip to land of your ancestors, they will be desperate to make it up to you. At this point, it is acceptable to ask them to help you paint your house.

Yep…I am an…ahhh!….African-American person (I love this site!) who has offended “very culturally sensitive” European-American people by talking about the many ways in which a person like myself may be offended by other European-American people…when the whole point of the conversation was to promote even more cultural awareness and understanding so as to ward off any impending offensiveness. Jeezzus, people, don’t waste time speaking up for “the cause” when you are only vaguely knowledgeable about it. You do more harm than good…
Legally we’re still “white” because no serious social movement or political cause of celebre didn’t occur to make the term “gauche” or “taboo”. In older US Census records you still can find “negro” uncapitalized and “colored” with an emphasis of everyone is “white” or “American” except for anyone descended from a pre-Civil war era slave. +

I grew up fundamentalist Lutheran. The Lutheran churchs hid escaped nazis after WWII. I know because I met them.
The last person I knew that was a nazi, who was actually a really nice guy and more of a family man than my deadbeat ex husband who works at the NSA right now, blew his brains out in Berlin about 20 years ago, because he couldn’t live with the memories.

Just found this site and I think it’s fantastic. I heard the Jamie Foxx speech about Michael Jacksons death and if any white person had said that it would be considered racist so it shows that there are double standards at play here.

I got a divorce (oh my!) I lived in San Francisco with hippies (will the horror ever end) and I quit going to evangelical churches when I was about 18 years old.

Btw, my bro raises a 9 year old boy on his own for 6 yrs. after his ex-Girlfriend took him (he was 9 mos. then) to Ohio to live with him for 3 yrs. The Cal. state family court and child custody services awarded custody of him back to his father and “grandma”, not be neglected or rejected again. Whoever leaves their spouse or children behind, but could get employed in the US government circa 1980 when the laws against deadbeat dads are different, is repgunant. Wow Shari you are very bigoted against white christians. You seem full of hatred and bigotry. You have to become more tolerant in order to heal yourself.
I feel for you Shari. You sound hurt. History shows you aren’t the only one. People have been using the religious mask to justify their intolerance, or their fear, or their egocentric manipulation, for centuries. The crusades, the spanish inquisition … the list goes on. But it’s not limited to christian cultures. People in all cultures and religions use the power-structures in their religion to control others around them.
Besides, the power-hungry “fundamentalists” are the hypocrites that Jesus often publicly rebuked. Indeed, by the very definition, hypocrites are NOT what they profess to be. A hypocritical person professing Christianity is NOT a Christian. I think it is unfair to tar all “fundamentalists” with the same brush. I know a lot of very committed Christians who are kind, forgiving, generous.
I certainly hope you get the chance to meet them and the God that they serve, and experience the difference between control and acceptance.

Religious fundamentalists are intolerant of others. They shun people who aren’t like themselves. They don’t even speak to people like me.
Just the other day, I was sitting in the park with my dogs, and admiring twin babies – mom took her new twins to the park.
It wasn’t 5 minutes before she got up and left because I didn’t go Praise Jesus every 2 seconds. These people are entirely insane.
I’m 62 years old. I have ministers in my own family. My husband is Catholic. I was raised Lutheran. I live right next door to the Crystal Cathedral. I know what religion is and I know what dogma is.
Don’t hang dogma on the cross. People who cannot acknowledge their fellow human beings and have to strut around thinking they’re better than everybody else, are hypocrites.
I know where that church is at: Garden Grove right next to Anaheim, Santa Ana or Orange (easier to remember where Disneyland is). I happen to live in the Palm Springs area, now the retirement home of the archconservatism once dominated Orange county and suburban L.A. of the 1960s. I abhor religious fundamentalism nor I want to attend a church, but I still got religious beliefs about a few things and my agnostic secular mentality is more about being free to be myself as long I don’t hurt others, follow the law and treat people right: “the golden rule”. +
..and to continue (my apologies), when I was age 10-11 with Mom in her car, she was approached by a brown-bearded middle-aged white guy who was passing out religious pamphlets. I was kinda laughing at his weird or awkward attitude, then Mom is like “you know he’s autistic” and he said “God cursed you with him being born like it”, then Mom was furiously mad & was replying on his ignorance, she stepped on the pedal & drove away.
My own parents went to churches when they are younger, but hadn’t gone in years…and I grew up in a “Christian” but non-church-going home. Dad was raised Catholic, Mom was formerly Baptist, therefore I wasn’t baptized out of Mom winning the argument over carrying on Dad’s infant baptismal tradition (not sure where it’s gonna be held). +

I admit to come from a family of Democrat voters who voted for Feinstein instead of cheatin’ Pete and his Democrat-in-disguise Grey-out Davis in bed with both of them, also with his cousin Maria Shriver married to Ah-nold. I wonder if sen. Boxer is gonna get disciplined for angering the president of the NAACP (forgot his name) in the Alternative energy summit last month (audio available on the Sean Hannity web site). I would never call a black person African-American.. blacks are just as much a part of this country as white people are!! If you aren’t calling whites European-Americans then why say African-American? What like black people aren’t just a natural make up of this country or something?? Please!
People of African descent chose the term African American for themselves, it wasn’t forced on them.
Black is perfectly acceptable to many, but African American is, too.
The term is designed to remind African Americans as a group that their history did not begin as an enslaved people. It is not meant to imply they are less American.
OK, I’m 62. I grew up white, in Watts. The Watts Riots? I was there. There were only a few white families in the entire town.
Then I went to college with the Black Panthers at Cal State.. Angela Davis was there. At the time, they wanted people to use the term African American, in honor of Africa – like Swedish Americans, and Polish Americans, and Italian Americans, and Irish Americans.
Whatever they as a community want to use, is just ok with me and I’ll go along with it. I’m not going to impose my own definitions.
I was just in South Berkeley 2 weeks ago, at the Swap Meet. There were people from Africa and America – whatever they come up with, is just fine with me. Just ell me what you prefer and I’ll use it. Put it on a bumper sticker.
This is their community, and they are entitled to come up with whatever they want to be known by. It’s a little tiring, but nothing I can’t handle.
The Watts riots, like the South Central riots was caused by black racism not just white racism: In Watts, some blacks went after small stores ran by Jewish white owners, while the South Central riots was full of looting/burning Korean-owned stores to a point the owners had semi-automatics & stood on top of buildings or in front of doors to protect ‘em.
The Black panthers, along with the American Indian Movement or the “La Raza” cause, were not only militants but somewhat admired for standing up for their minority group community…like civilian militias during the American revolution. But they preach violence, terrorism, harming police officers & wanted a “race war”, as well are racial separatist groups who had members shout “kill whitey”. +
