#101 Being Offended

To be offended is usually a rather unpleasant experience, one that can expose a person to intolerance, cultural misunderstandings, and even evoke the scars of the past.  This is such an unpleasant experience that many people develop a thick skin and try to only be offended in the most egregious and awful situations.  In many circumstances, they can allow smaller offenses to slip by as fighting them is a waste of time and energy.  But white people, blessed with both time and energy, are not these kind of people.  In fact there are few things white people love more than being offended.

Naturally, white people do not get offended by statements directed at white people.  In fact, they don’t even have a problem making offensive statements about other white people (ask a white person about “flyover states”).  As a rule, white people strongly prefer to get offended on behalf of other people.

It is also valuable to know that white people spend a significant portion of their time preparing for the moment when they will be offended.  They read magazines, books, and watch documentaries all in hopes that one day they will encounter a person who will say something offensive.  When this happens, they can leap into action with quotes, statistics, and historical examples.  Once they have finished lecturing another white person about how it’s wrong to use the term “black” instead of “African-American,” they can sit back and relax in the knowledge that they have made a difference.

White people also get excited at the opportunity to be offended at things that are sexist and/or homophobic.  Both cases offering ample opportunities for lectures, complaints, graduate classes, lengthy discussions and workshops.  All of which do an excellent job of raising awareness among white people who hope to change their status from “not racist” to “super not racist.”

Another thing worth noting is that the threshold for being offended is a very important tool for judging and ranking white people. Missing an opportunity to be outraged is like missing a reference to Derrida-it’s social death.

If you ever need to make a white person feel indebted to you, wait for them to mention a book, film, or television show that features a character who is the same race as you,  then say “the representation of <insert race> was offensive and if you can’t see that, well, you need to do some soul searching.”  After they return from their hastily booked trip to land of your ancestors, they will be desperate to make it up to you.  At this point, it is acceptable to ask them to help you paint your house.

this one i have to disagree with.
other races are often “offended”
just as much as white people claim
to be and i am particularly annoyed
when anyone claims to be offended

The LALAs are too busy driving rented cars and sleeping on sofas as they live 4 to a 2 bedroom apartamento. Stop being offended and start living, speaking your mind sheeple.

Blacks are black, not afro-americans, asians are orientals or mongoloids. enough of the PC garbage that stuff belongs in LALA land with all the wannabe actors and jokers/CONsultants

@Chow Main
No one has used the terms afro-american, orientals or mongoloids for ages.

The claim that African American & Asian are PC terms is the claim of a fool, and quite possibly an old fool at that.

The world is passing you by. You can either join in and evolve or crawl back into your hole where it is safe and no one will challenge your bone-deep ignorance.

That’s the problem, isn’t it? This whole wordgame is like fashion, except if you fall off, you’re not seen as unfashionable, but as disrespectful or ignorant.

Any anti-racist who thinks this is helping their cause is truly ignorant. It protects fewer sensibilities than it creates white nationalists.

I agree. If a black is born in Africa and possesses dual citizenship–THEN and ONLY THEN is that particular black person a legal “African American.” I have Irish blood, but I certainly can’t check the “Irish American” box on ethnicity or run around calling myself “Irish American” unless I was born in Ireland or I have an Irish citizenship as well as American.

To call blacks “African American” when there is no legal basis for that description is purely IGNORANT and by calling them AAs when they fail to refer to other groups of people based on their skin color (or lack thereof) Irish American, Indian American is showing more racism and being bias when that is what we’re trying to get away from doing.

People are people. Some white people suck. Some black people suck. Some Asians suck. Some Muslims suck. Some Christians suck.

Let’s be grown ups and knock off this “white people do this” and “black people do this” shit.

I’m white and your comments about white people are not true in my case. So, you’re a hypocrite for saying that ALL any group of people do anything. You’re more racist than the KKK that you’re pissed off about.

The word “African-American” is the most acceptable term to describe people of color, though the use is questionable in a “post-racial” world and the United States of America is where ethnic groups merged into a single nationality known as “Americans”. The term “Afro” is grammatically correct but has an “archaic” sound and evolved a “negative” meaning, despite US supreme court judge Thurgood Marshall in 1987 spoke of his preference for the “Afro” part of American, to indicate ones’ origin not being of an “African” nationality. +

wow. You’re kind of a douche, aren’t you?

@White Chick:
You’re comments are dripping with the shameful fear of being labelled a racist while at the same to being a down-to-earth streetwise realist who is seperate from the mainstream viewpoint. You ARE the kind of person this blog talks about. You are a fuckstain. You will never be as hip as someone like myself.

Let’s listen to The Shins and chillax, yeah?

“You will never be as hip as someone like myself.”

Man, I hope you are trying to be sarcastic here. The thought of someone being self-proclaimed as “hip” and then using “chillax” in the next sentence is hilarious, but then again, I live in San Francisco, which is full of “more-PC-than-thou” idiots who would probably write the above post with absolutely no knowledge of the irony.

Side question: Is “African American” more of a racial identity designation than it is a racial designation? Otherwise, would Obama be Caucasian-African-American?

Hey, just where is the orient anyways? Is it near the subcontinent? Or perhaps Arabia? Persia? Mesopotamia?

Douche.

Once they have finished lecturing another white person about how it’s wrong to use the term “black” instead of “African-American,” they can sit back and relax in the knowledge that they have made a difference.

Ironically, its the most inaccurate phrase to call black people.

Oh, and I find this comment offensive

the Irony is that in trying to be non-racist, those in the vanguard of the political correct brigade in the 80′s exposed a deep racial prejudice by insisting on ‘coloured’ instead – i.e one does not want to highlight their disadvantage, that of being black.

African american was a better choice, had some historical accuracy (i.e africans brought to america) but now I believe we all can relax and just refer to black, being a subset of American society

White people certainly don’t like Carlos Mencia, and Abraham Lincoln calls him out on it…

white people are all about being offended, however, they love offending others—either terry nickell diming employees, being cheap, ripping someone off, etc….white people are just dorky and dopey. They love cheating, they love vespas, and they love buying overpriced condos/homes to show off to their poser friends. all for show, all artificial, built on lies, for show. for sho,

Hung lo.

Yes, we just all are all that. Every last one of us, all the same, all that, that’s all.

you seem offended…

hungevenlower on July 23, 2009 at 10:24 pm

yes, i am quite dorky and dopey, and yes i do love offending others, but only on things that matter, i.e. their mothers, their extremely unattractive looks, and the fact that not only them but there fathers and grandfathers probably have small genetalia. i do not, however, cheat, buy overpriced condos and homes, or like vespas. they are pointless. “worry about yours, let them worry about theirs, and ill worry about mine.”
with love,

fo sho.

Being white is like being blue, it’s a reason to take a prozac, a half bottle of gin, and lament the success of ugly Jews in Hollywood….BRAINBOOGER.COM…speaks volumes

I doubt you need to talk anti-Jewish stuff in here, but the proper term of hating Jews (a religion, not a race) is (bing) anti-Semitic. The word “Jew” when not used negatively or as a put down is still OK, although the Nazis’ star of david badge had a printed “Juden” is the closest thing to the N-word for some Jewish community leaders. In Europe for a period of time, the Jews were more called “Yisraeli-ites” to indicate their culture or religion is from Israel, a precursor to the “African-American” terminology to sound “polite” or even the “Native American” word was created to make lots of white people forget the historical treatment of “Indians”. +
