#101 Being Offended

To be offended is usually a rather unpleasant experience, one that can expose a person to intolerance, cultural misunderstandings, and even evoke the scars of the past. This is such an unpleasant experience that many people develop a thick skin and try to only be offended in the most egregious and awful situations. In many circumstances, they can allow smaller offenses to slip by as fighting them is a waste of time and energy. But white people, blessed with both time and energy, are not these kind of people. In fact there are few things white people love more than being offended.
Naturally, white people do not get offended by statements directed at white people. In fact, they don’t even have a problem making offensive statements about other white people (ask a white person about “flyover states”). As a rule, white people strongly prefer to get offended on behalf of other people.
It is also valuable to know that white people spend a significant portion of their time preparing for the moment when they will be offended. They read magazines, books, and watch documentaries all in hopes that one day they will encounter a person who will say something offensive. When this happens, they can leap into action with quotes, statistics, and historical examples. Once they have finished lecturing another white person about how it’s wrong to use the term “black” instead of “African-American,” they can sit back and relax in the knowledge that they have made a difference.
White people also get excited at the opportunity to be offended at things that are sexist and/or homophobic. Both cases offering ample opportunities for lectures, complaints, graduate classes, lengthy discussions and workshops. All of which do an excellent job of raising awareness among white people who hope to change their status from “not racist” to “super not racist.”
Another thing worth noting is that the threshold for being offended is a very important tool for judging and ranking white people. Missing an opportunity to be outraged is like missing a reference to Derrida-it’s social death.
If you ever need to make a white person feel indebted to you, wait for them to mention a book, film, or television show that features a character who is the same race as you, then say “the representation of <insert race> was offensive and if you can’t see that, well, you need to do some soul searching.” After they return from their hastily booked trip to land of your ancestors, they will be desperate to make it up to you. At this point, it is acceptable to ask them to help you paint your house.
Its hard for a white person to not get offended because they are always right.

I laugh at those white people who get upset whenever I’m wearing a Washington Redskins t-shirt with the savage for a logo. I’ve had a few people tell me the t-shirt is racist. After reading Howard Zinn in my AP US History class in high school, my best friend and I were enraged by the massacre of the Arawak Indians spurred by the voyage of Columbus. Naturally, we decided to boycott Columbus Day by making cute little t-shirts to wear to school that said things like “Genocide is not the trait of a hero,” and knew that we were very effective and superiorly aware.

hehe, this reminds me on a show i watched this guy was joking, but it was kind of racists, however the guy was a comedian, he jokes on all races equally, so what do you expect. but he made a joke pointed towards white people and they caught a shot where everyone was laughing but this one white guy looked somewhat upset. I cracked up at the fact that the guy couldn’t take it as a joke. hehe, but you should know that not all people go under one title. not everyone of a specific race goes under that one shallow description.

Well, I gotta say that was an interesting point, but I totally disagree. In fact, the message is kind of problematic because it reinforces xenophobic ideals. I just used a big word, and I’m a minority so does that mean I’m trying to act white? Yes I do agree that white people are born with certain privileges. White people are the dominant race in this world, majority of CEO’s are white, at times they walk into a store without the fear of being followed, but there are certain disadvantages as well. White people are scapegoats for tyranny that they have caused against minorities or the underserved, white people are stereotypically seen as racist, ignorant, and silver spooned. For one I believe that is problematic, just as all stereotypes and prejudice beliefs are problematic because it creates a distortion of reality. Not all white people are rich, not all white people are smart when It boils down they all have their own individual characteristic. I will admit that they are endowed with certain privileges, just as we all are to some extent. I will admit that majority of white people are in the upper class category, which grants them better access to education and resources and at time they are oblivious to certain things. But I will end this by saying that white people will still get offended just as if anyone who used any racial epithets to attack blacks, yellows, or browns. In the end it doesn’t matter if white people has a higher tolerance to bigotry because universally we should not attack and create assumption on each other just because we are members of a distinct racial or ethnic group.
Actually, the majority of whites are NOT in the upper class. The upper class is the smallest minority on the planet. Now, the majority of the upper class is white, but most white people are poor or middle class.

Depends on the perspective of which you view the matter. To his black peers he is generally shunned (to some he is actually raised in status.) To the sister of the woman he married he is sometimes raised higher ( depending on the relationship of the sister and the wife) and to whites he is generally the same.

Well good for you. However, I do not agree that everyone is racist. There is a Facebook group with 24,000 members (yes, I’m one of them) called “I support interracial relationships.” A study found that 1 in 4 people under the age of 25 has dated or is dating someone outside of their race. So the older generation is a lot more racist than the younger generation.

In a study done by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, most of the White interviewees said that they would not support a family member marrying a Black person (Bonilla-Silva, 2000). This is because Blacks and Whites are the most socially distant groups in America. White isolation as Bonilla-Silva puts it, fosters the creation of positive self-views (“We are nice, normal people”) and negative other views (“they are lazy”). Also, because most Whites live in a mostly/completely White environment, they are attracted to mostly/only Whites. This is not really even because of personal choice, rather a result of their self-segregation and isolation. I do agree that interracial couples should not be mistreated.
Jay Koo, I like some of your points but it is not true that everyone is racist. Everything in this country (i.e. the Constitution, the law, the criminal justice system, etc) was created by Whites and thus served the interests of Whites. Because Whites are the only group that benefits from these systems and institutions, they are the only group that can be racist as they can withhold and defend this hoarding of resources in the name of American liberalism (i.e. Whites have the wealth because they earned it). There are other defenses as well like [the myth of] equal opportunity, cultural racism (i.e. Blacks are lazy or they just don’t put as much effort into college prep, etc). It is possible for people of color to have racial prejudices, but this type of racial prejudice occurs on an individual level as there is no systemic racial oppression against Whites.
Jess, where did you get that information? That number doesn’t sound right to me because only 5% of marriages are interracial (Black and White are the least common of those). One would think that number would be higher if 25% of relationships were interracial.

Actually, many of the sociology scholars that study race and ethnicity are WHITE.
If you want to talk about anti-White, maybe you should know a little more about Whiteness. Whiteness is a social construction. To say that scholars are anti-white, I guess, is true. Whiteness is something that exists only to justify and maintain privilege. Our founding father’s did NOT understand whiteness as we understand it today. White skin historically meant free whereas Black skin meant slave. White skin was transformed into intangible property by White elites, particularly in the antebellum south, so as to stop a mixed race class movement. They promoted racial propaganda so as to stop working-class Whites and working-class Blacks from working together for material gain. Ordinary Whites were then able to cling to Whiteness and have made material gains but not nearly what they would have made if they had worked with Blacks to change their class status. White elites ceded some control but still controlled most of the wealth and still do because they were able to distract Whites from the real issue which was elite control of wealth to this social construction called race. Back to the WW2 reference, the GI bill was what solidified Whiteness as ‘real.’ Whites before were differentiated by ethnicity and because of the GI bill and the systemic denial of its benefits to veterans of color, suburbs were created and that’s when ethnic differences between Whites really started to slip away.
Many ethnic Whites today would not have been classified as White 200 years ago (i.e. Poles, Slavs, Irish, etc). There is no such thing as White culture as every ethnicity of White had a different experience when they came to America. A shared group name entails a shared group experience which is not the case for Whites.

That’s how Whiteness stays alive. Now many Near Easterners (Persians, Turks, etc.) are classified as “Caucasian” under the census. Due to current geo-politics we’re not quite there yet, but soon they’ll have membership in the White club too as long as it keeps the black/brown/yellow out-groups intact.

i agree david. most of these cultures don’t want marriage outside culture bc to have a happy marriage, they need like-mindedness, similar beliefs and values. for us homegrown americans, (yes that means you sweetie, you know who you are) they differ from region to race to individual to religion. it’s not a biblical sin to marry outside of your race, only a cultural one…one that is dying with an aged population who “just weren’t raised that way.” but interracial marriage is hard, marriage of the same race is hard enough. when you die, all that matters is did you love enough? The term “Social Darwinist” actually involves a category mistake… Darwinism holds that over generations genetic mutations will lead to the survival of certain animals over others–which just is the evolutionist picture (drastically simplified of course). To make “Darwinism” work for “society” would involve the adaptation of an entire society over the course of many generations. Suggesting that stupid people should be allowed to die off if not social Darwinism, it’s just good sense. When you have a plurality of idiots making the decisions for everyone, there is a problem… but that is not my point here.
My point is that the term “social Darwinist” connotes a wide-scale confusion about both how evolution works and what exactly it means to be an elitist.
You may be an elitist, and that’s fine… lots of people are. But next time you are called a “social darwinist” please set the record straight… the user of this term is uttering syntactic structures that mimic meaningful discourse, but failing to actually say anything meaningful at all.

Although, watching one get all ticked off about nothing can be very entertaining. I was in line at a supermarket and some short, old dude who looked like he weighed about 90 pounds got all pissed because the checker wouldn’t accept his double coupon from another store. So, this guy, who, appears to expect people to do as he says, starts cussing and getting all red faced and looking like he was about to start frothing at the mouth (I was poised with my trusty cell phone video cam to capture it if he did). I started to chuckle, and he looked back at me like some demon psycho and I just kind of shrugged my shoulders and he turned back to the checker. Of course, the manager was called; of course the Lunatic got his extra 50 cents off whatever it was he was trying to use the coupon on (the man bought like $300 worth of groceries). It was funny and terrifying at the same time. It also sucked a little too: while this freak was making all this drama, the rest of us had to stand there waiting with our stuff.
if it was walmart then their policy states they must match the lowest price from any other store if proof is shown (within reason i saw a coupon for 1 cent crayons behind the counter circled and said dont match this offer)

Technically calling someone who is black and born in America, an African America is incorrect. They are American, and almost all the black people in America have never even been to Africa. You dont call white people European-American do you?
Calling Black people “Black” has actually been used for thousands of years, dating back to the ancient Egyptians, who were the first people to designate race and geographical location. They referred to themselves as “Red” people, from egypt, because there skin tone was a darkish pink to red, the people from the north, europeans were “White” because they looked white, even though only a few white people are actually very pale, the people south of Egypt were “Black” because they were dark, even though a small portion were actually very dark, they referred to people from east Asia as “Yellow” even thou only a small portion were actually yellow. So, when they were describing someone from that part of the world, say eastern asia, europe, egypt, or mid to southern africa, they would just say their color, and people would know who they were referring to.
To go even deeper into the subject, there is actually only one race, and thats the human race. People with different pigmentation are that way due to evolution from the environment. More sun, darker skin, less sun, lighter skin, etc. While black people can get sun burnt, its not nearly as common as white people getting sun burnt, because black people are lucky enough to have a built in sunscreen.
Next time your husband says “black people”, he is not using it in a derogatory way (unless he has anger in his voice) because its perfectly exceptable, and has been used for thousands of years, just like “white people”.

As an aside, I’ve gone to great lengths to teach my children to not be prejudiced. It probably hasn’t done much good. Two black kids beat my youngest son up. A couple of years later two older black guys broke into his locker at a 24-Hour-Fitness and stole everything of value. (Security camera taped it). A black girl stole my mother’s wallet in a grocery store. (Security camera taped it). And there have been other incidents like those. There are certain harsh truths that the bleeding-hearts insist on denying.

I’ve read the Bible cover-to-cover four times and I think that I have an excellent idea of what Jesus would do or advocate doing in various moral & ethical situations. My son didn’t tolerate getting beaten up. One of the kids that assaulted him was tried & convicted as an adult for assault. He gets to go through life and apply for jobs with that on his record. That took care of him.
The other kid Andrew took care of on the _last_ day of school. He walked up to him, identified himself and informed him that he wanted to settle accounts. (He didn’t sucker-punch him from behind like the two of them did to him). The kid agreed and Andrew proceeded to clean-his-clock, as the saying goes. (In the several months between the assault and that fight Andrew had had a major growth-spurt). It turns out that the poor, disadvantaged, historically-wronged sociopath wasn’t so tough in a one-on-one fair fight. Sometimes the good-guys win in the end.

I don’t believe the diversity myth at all. Honestly, I don’t like diversity. Human nature is that we want to live with, work with and be surrounded by people who are as much like we are as possible, racially, ethnically, culturally, linquistically, religously, politically, education-level, etc. Societies that are homogenous tend to be harmonious.
When a white person chants “diversity” they’re either being PC (lieing) or they live in some sort of ivory tower (gated community) and if forced to actually get out and mingle with “the diverse” would quickly change their minds. When a non-white person chants “diversity” they really mean affirmative-action or “let my relatives come over too.”
Prior to going into the army in ‘76 at the tender age of 17 I had scarcely encountered a minority (or a “dirty white”). Talk about “The Hills Have Eyes!!!” I’m talking effing _mutants_–black, white and brown! Folks, listen to me: if you think that diversity is a good thing it’s because you haven’t gotten out and actually experienced diversity. “Be afraid, be very afraid.”

I’m not happy with our immigration policy. I don’t have a shred of evidence to support the following, it’s just a gut-feeling: the population of the U.S. should’ve topped-out at around 250-million. After that immigration should’ve been limited to the following five categories (in no particular order):
1. When a U.S. citizen legally adopts a foreign child.
Should be legally & financially responsible for them
until age 21 or for five years after they come to the
U.S., whichever comes first.
2. When a U.S. citizen marries a non-citizen. (I’ve got
a thing for latin women, myself).
3. When a non-citizen has a significant amount of
capital to invest. Could be on some kind of sliding-
scale, for example, 2-million dollars for a minimum of
three years to 1-million dollars for six years.
4. Certain skills that we have a shortage of. I’m
thinking Nobel-prize winning researchers, iranian or
pakistani nuclear scientists who want to defect, that
sort of thing.
5. When a non-citizen provides a valuable service for
the U.S.: tips us off to a terrorist plot, the
interpreters in Iraq & Afghanistan.

If being a racist means that you believe that your race is superior to all others then I am not a racist. The same research that indicates that the average white person is somewhat more intelligent than the average black person also indicates that the average asian is somewhat more intelligent than the average white person. So if there’s a “master race” apparently it isn’t mine.
Btw, in both the millitary and in my civilian career I’ve encountered a great many black people, both men and women, that were demonstrably smarter than I am. When they were my supervisor I had no problem with it.

If you watch this special currently airing on MSNBC.com “Multiracial in America” (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24765917/) you will see a white woman with black children who pulled them out of school and had them home-schooled because she perceived that less was being expected of them, and she wanted them to be educated to their full potential, which she knew was great. It’s probably because she is white that she was able to see the difference in treatment, in comparison to her own experience with teachers.
Throwing money at Missy Elliott will not magically turn her into Gwyneth Paltrow at this stage in her life; conversely, Traci Bingham will not suddenly turn from a Paris Hilton-type into ghetto fabulous if hers gets taken away. It’s all in how you were reared and the opportunities you had growing up and the expectations placed on you (from your immediate neighbourhood/community, to your family, to your teachers, to the media and greater society). I wouldn’t get offended by the term “black guy” per se, but it does depend on the context in which it was used. Black people like myself often get offended if a racial description is given where none was warranted.
For example, “This black guy just came in and bought a car charger.” What the hell does the guy being black have to do with him buying a car charger?! Statements like this will blatantly irritate me because it a reminder of how race-conscious some people can be.
I long for the day when I can be described merely as a “hot chick” and people leave out the adjective, “hot BLACK chick.”

I live in Toronto, AKA the most multicultural city in the world (yes, I can post links that prove this if you don’t believe me or you can just Google it yourself). It’s entirely true that the most harmonious places are those like where I live, where no one minority group has dominance (as opposed to black vs. white, Hispanic vs. black vs. white, etc.) but where there is instead a cultural mosaic. There are only like 2 or 3 places in the world that can lay claim to this type of makeup, Toronto being one of them, and Hawaii being another one. Now when was the last time you heard of a hate crime shooting or lynching in Hawaii? I mean really. When everyone around you looks different, you learn to appreciate differences and realize the triviality of racial prejudice. Just a little food-for-thought for the few racists kicking around in here…

I actually grown my own been sprout in a large plastic drink server. Its very easy, all you need is a cup full of seeds then put them them in water for 12 hours, then they drink up a bunch of water, then rinse them and put them back into the container, and wait 24 hours then just rinse them with water and put them back, and for about a week you every day you just rinse them with water and put them back in the dry container, in a darkish place, and in about a week you have tons of yummy bean sprouts! isnt that great!?!?!?

White people love living in the “rougher” parts of cities whose rougher parts seem like Beverly Hills compared to North Philly or Southeast DC.
White folk who move to those so-called “rougher” neighborhoods have obviously never walked around any true shit hole. I’m referring to places I’ve been where people didn’t just look at me like I was out of place, but straight up asked me: “What the fuck you doin here?” Places where a middle school is right across the street from a juvenile detention center and elementary schools whose oldest child is like maybe 10 being protected by security guards and CCTV at the entrance, which is locked tight during school hours and the staff has to move their cars off the street into a locked area after 4pm to avoid having them stolen. My work, for a while, took me to some really nasty, scary places; I was always glad to head home for the day. Forget being offended, I was worried about being shot or robbed or both. Police in these areas are an occupying force and I was told by many people never to work too late, it’s just not safe. So I have no clue what these other white folk think they’ll gain, but let them go where they fear for their life and let’s see how long they’ll stay. I live in the suburbs, straight up. It’s peaceful, quiet, and the streets are wide–and there are no gun shots.
I guess there are degrees of “rougher.” Childless WP like to live in places that offer variety (call it diversity, if you will). Non-chain restaurants, ethnic cuisine in neighborhoods of the same ethnicity, cheap bars, ground level arts & theater. Those are amenities that can be accessible for low dollar figure & therefore can be in proximity to poorer communities. No one really wants to be at physical risk. But, when people are victims of a crime, or near victims, they’re going to talk about it. People talk about emotional events in their lives. So, if one is looking for a reason to bash someone, one can twist that into saying that said person is “bragging” about the roughness of their neighborhood.
On the contrary, folks that start out with a hard lot in life vaule comfort & security above all else. If you live your childhood in physical danger, you don’t give a d@mn about putting yourself at risk in order to be closer to something. It’s like, “f#ck that, if I want to go there, I’ll *drive*, then get the f#ck out of there.”
And, yes, I’ve lived in a neighborhood where we didn’t go out after dusk. And where, the one time I did go to a restaurant in the late afternoon, the waiter (who I often played basketball with during the day) said: “what are you doing still here, homey (it was 1984)” As in, “you’ll be gettin’ there hell out of here real soon, if you know what’s good for you.”

a) this is not really about “White” people but Upper Middle Class White people. Poor whites can’t afford the $6000 bicycles and probably wouldn’t choose to buy them if they could.
b) The interior states of the US (those without an ocean coast) are a lot less cosmopolitan (I’m generalizing) and their cities are smaller. Their politics tend to be more conservative, they are more likely to be church going, and aren’t likely to fit into most of the SWPL jokes.
c) Rather than think about the fact that Americans (and white people) come in larger varieties than what you’d find in New York, Seattle, LA, or San Francisco, they choose not to step foot in those states and instead take direct flights from their coast city on one side of the country to the coast city of destination on the other side.

I take offense to that which you have written. I attended a couple of women’s studies courses while in college and was impressed with the crude nature of the nasty jokes, the almost NC-17 rating most of our educational films would get, and the number of rather attractive lesbians in both courses. Far from feeling alienated or unwanted, I felt titillated going to class. I don’t know if I learned anything valuable about women, but I did have a good time.
On the other hand, I work with mostly women, and have for quite a few years, and, let’s just say they have a grudge against men. Each of them have their own horror story about men to tell. I have learned to nod my head and go on about my business. It keeps me off their radar–almost.

It would pressure the government of Israel to indict the deputy mayor and all who participated. Yet ADL, in its recent press statement, doesn’t hint that Bible burning in Israel is a hate crime.

This is the part where I actually pull a fast one and get mildly offended at the term “African-American.” The majority of black people living in the United States have never even been to Afirca, and they certainly don’t hail from there. In college, I remember hearing a lot of the black internation students get very offended. “Why can’t they just say ‘black?’” they’d ask? I’m sick of being called “Afircan-American when I am neither Afircan nor American. I’m from the freaking Bahamas!” Then there are my Kenyan friends who hate the term because it’s actually very offensive to someone who grew up in Africa to have a bunch of people who’ve never even seen Afircan soil going around making up fake holidays like Kwanzaa and all that crap, spreading lies about what the culture is like in a place they have no experience with. If you don’t have relatives who moved to the US in the last 50 years or so, you’re not antyhing-American. You’re just American. Deal with the shame that induces, and move on. Most so-called “African-Americans” have been living on American soil for 200 years or more. That’s longer than my family has been in the states, and I don’t go around calling myself “German-American.” That misnomer is offensive to black people the world over, and it needs to be put to rest.
