#106 Facebook

Social Networking sites have been embraced by white people since their inception. Because these sites use profile pages, white people can more efficiently judge friends and future friends on their taste in film, books, music, and inspirational quotes. Advanced level white people, fearful of being judged on their tastes from last week, will often only list one or two ironic things as their favorites. For example under music they would simply list “P.M. Dawn” or under films they would choose only Armageddon. In both cases these ironic answers serve as protective shields from the harsh gaze of other white people.

However, it is important to remember that the “where” is often as important as the “who” when it comes to social networking. As noted in earlier posts, white people are obsessed with being in the right neighborhood and the Internet is no exception.

In the early days, white people joined a social networking service called Friendster where they could connect with old friends and make new ones. Eventually, white people started to notice more and more of their friends on MySpace, so they closed their Friendster accounts and migrated to the new service. It was like living in a neighborhood that was pretty good but kind of far away, so you might have to miss out on a few parties. Needless to say, this was unacceptable.

For a brief period of time, MySpace was the site where everyone kept their profile and managed their friendships. But soon, the service began to attract fake profiles, the wrong kind of white people, and struggling musicians. In real world terms, these three developments would be equivalent to a check cashing store, a TGIFridays, and a housing project. All which strike fear in the hearts of white people.

White people were nervous but had nowhere else to go. Then Facebook came along and offered advanced privacy settings, closed networks, and a clean interface. In respective real world terms, these features are analogous to an apartment or house with a security system/doorman, an alumni dinner, and a homeowners association that protects the aesthetics of the neighborhood.  In spite of these advances, some white people still clung to their old MySpace accounts.  That was until they learned that Facebook started, like so many things beloved by white people, at Harvard.

Within a matter of months, MySpace had gone from a virtual utopia to Digital Detroit, where only minorities and indie bands remain.

If you plan on befriending white people, it is essential that you join them in the digital suburbs and open a Facebook account immediately. It’s also a good idea to make up a story about how someone from high school sent you a friend request and after accepting you discovered that they were fat and unsuccessful. White people love these stories.

Wow, the ethnic (I guess it’s important to qualify everything with race) writers on this site must spend a lot of time disecting “white people’s” motives on everything.
Why is this website almost always off the mark?
Oh, it must be humor……..or something.

haha…I’m just sayin, this has been incredibly amusing. I am a lil ol white girl from Vermont (one of the whitest states in the country) and I laughed my ass off!

I am guilty as charged of digging a vast majority of what is listed, however, I do not necessarily think that it need pertain to any particular cultural group. i think its just pseudo-intellectual youth culture…

The writers forgot to mention that it is all the rage for white people to dig Leonard Cohen a general conversation with a young…and yes I hate to say it generally white L Cohen lover will go as follows…

“I love everything by Leonard Cohen, he is so great! Its really heavy. Famous Blue Raincoat CHANGED MY LIFE! Although I really don’t like any of his stuff from the 80′s”

Well honey I hate to say it but…he did alot in the 80′s and yes much of its weird. To not like cohen in the 80′s is to generally only kind of like him a little….I digress..

my point to this was that these are the responses that this is meant to generate. You can joke about hipsters or white people or say that you dont use facebook or like coffee. In reality by expressing your displeasure you are fitting the mold of the pain in the ass hipster that you try so hard to avoid being…

I don’t mind being a fan of the vast majority of this list. I read it and laughed at myself. I think that is generally what the spirit of this is about :)

I think everyone just needs to smoke a little grass and chill the f out and learn to laugh about it instead of acting all offended by silly yet insightful truth.

Hating facebook is the new liking facebook

Can I call this, stuff yuppies like, not whites. Other races OD on these items too.

I love myspace and tgifridays!!!!!!! facebook is for losers! myspace rocks

TGIFriday’s was a 80s trend gone bad, too loud & lively, full of families consist of a fat husband, fatter wife and FAT kids, and pricey (or in yuppie dollars: “cheap”) ugly un-real food. TGIFriday’s seems to draw in more blacks than McDonald’s or KFC combined (racist), hire more Latinos than Wal-mart or Lennar homes (also racist) and white ethnics who treat it like a faux-Italian restaurant (kinda racist about the Italian Americans) to make the Olive Garden look drab. +

Isn’t the person behind this site white?

some random dude on January 3, 2009 at 9:34 pm

very much so.

Define “White People” please… is there a tan line requirement? At what point does the shade become non-white? Are freckles acceptable?

Wow sometimes I really wonder about your country… Grow Up!!!

After reading this site you should have figured out by now that white is not what you are, it’s what you are not.

Ummm, Mister Canada–

The writer is from Ontario. BTW, this blog has nothing to do with country origin but rather the self-deprecating insight of the author and his humorous perception of “all things white.”

It’s not the whiteness of your skin, it’s the whiteness of your SOUL. (And taste in music, food, and companionship.)

i’m pretty sure the author of this website is canadian. food for thought.

Is Canada the most “polite” country in the world? They are more P-C than the most liberal part of America…and kept a whole lot of pre-American revolutionary political structure. No wonder the New England WASPs want to be “loyalists” and just move up there. So long, whitie-waspy-yankee…but don’t let the frost bite you when you leave the door. +

And how can you say you are black, when really you are brown…dduu

I’m black and I go on Facebook to meet white guys.

Mission accomplished.

i wish i had a black freind…

Hating facebook is the new black… I don’t mean that to be by any means racial.

I forgot to add that I have black friends.

Boy, are you on target with this one. I have long complained about the elitism of Facebook, and how it reminds me of the gated communities where you have to swipe a card to enter, and the homeowners association controls who gets in (i.e., white people and maybe some non-white people who wear peacoats) and how they live. At least Myspace allows you to design your own site, upload your music and films, and write a blog–i.e., show some personality and creativity! Yet, when I tell my (white) friends that I prefer Myspace, they say it’s “philistine”. I guess it really is a case of “There goes the neighborhood”…

(oh, and for the record, yes, I’m white, and yes, I have a Facebook profile…one of the rare instances in which I’ve caved in to peer pressure. But I still hate that site.)

Anyone over the age of 13 who spends more than 2 minutes a month on Facebook or MySpace needs to get a life
