You make some good points, but please don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing SA - I live there too, and love it, I just should have made that clearer.

You're right, I didn't think about the McNay, or SAMA for that matter, both excellent museums. My bad.

Yes, we have excellent Mexican food. No argument there. And Taco Cabana is by far the best fast-food place I've been to, bar none. Good Asian food (particularly Chinese) is a little hard to come by, although there are some places where you can get it. The point was that fast-food restaurants and BBQ joints are on pretty much every street corner, although this is probably true everywhere and I just haven't been paying enough attention while traveling. Which, knowing me, isn't that unlikely.

I did not know about the Whole Foods in the Quarry, and that's also my bad - I should have done more research.

All your points about world championship sports, medical industry, tourism, etc. are valid. Again, I wasn't saying that no one would want to live in San Antonio, just that our (imaginary, I hope) stereotypical White Person wouldn't want to. I was playing for laughs, not for accuracy, and I definitely wasn't trying to sound like the Tourism Council.

Equally valid is your point about the weather in the summertime, but it supports mine, which is that active outdoor sports aren't so much fun here in July and August. (Besides, our stereotypical white person is probably from Portland or some other place where "really hot" means 90 degrees anyway.) I actually do have a couple of friends who claim to enjoy the heat, but that's another story.

I sincerely beg your pardon for peddling ignorance and will hereby shut up.

i love phish! and it's true, the phish crowd is pretty much all white. maybe because the guys in the band are white vermonters who built their fan base starting as a college band at uvm? who knows. anyway i think the music could be liked by many people it's just not widely listened to outside of the phish sphere.

I'm white, grew up in SA, went to public school, went off to college, earned my PhD, and just returned. Yes, whites are a minority in SA, and there is only a bus system. Nothing else on your list is remotely true.

Major art galleries are here, McNay for instance holds and owns world famous artists. O'Keefe, Picasso, Rembrant,...

SA's is known for it's cuisine. Mexican of course, but anything else under the sun is here. Paesano's is famous. And our "fast-food", like Taco Cabana, is much better than other parts of the country that serve "authentic Mexican Cuisine." If you travel, you would know this.

Whole Foods is in the Quarry, very central in the city. There may be others too, but before there was Whole Foods and that trend, there was Sun Harvest here, the original organic store that has survived and flourished here for decades.

The public schools I went to earned and continued to earn National Exemplary status, from grade school to High School. Just speaking for my class, there were dozens of National merit scholars. We went to all parts of the country, from the Academies to the Ivy's, both whites and hispanics.

Compared to the rest of the country, our housing market is stellar. Low costs of living produces a big bang for your buck here. There are many old established neighborhoods that are still affordable.

SA has world championship sports, top notch medical facilities, many universities, huge research and development facilities, big corp. business headquarters, and of course and huge tourist industry. People from all over the country come to SA and love it, or else there wouldn't be the riverwalk, bowl games, major concerts that continually thrive and grow.

No one, whether white or hispanic, that isn't from here, likes the weather in the summer. You have to be a local to get accustomed to it. You deal with it like someone from up North deals with cold.

Peddle your ignorance somewhere else. I hope you realize that after blundering so badly on your list, that no one would/should believe you when you say whites don't like hispanics, especially in SA. When the rest of the list is such garbage, you kind of lose credibility you know?

10 Reasons White People Don't Like San Antonio, Texas:

- It's not "artsy" enough.

- Too many fast-food restaurants.

- No Whole Foods stores.

- No REI outlets.

- No good schools. The public schools are mediocre (and what white person sends their kids to public school anyway?) and the private schools are all either Catholic or Fundamentalist Christian, and as everyone knows, those religious groups espouse narrow-mindedness.

- Too many Mexicans. For some reason, white people don't like Mexicans. It's weird because they love to demonstrate how tolerant and open-minded they are, but apparently they'd much rather demonstrate this using a black or gay person than a Mexican. Don't ask me why.

- Too few fellow whites. White people like to have friends they can actually relate to, in addition to the ones that display their tolerance and diversity, and in San Antonio, whites are a definite minority. (Fact - look it up.) Of the whites in San Antonio, most are the Wrong Kind of Whites, being either in the military or homeschooling families (or both). And as everyone knows, military types and homeschoolers are narrow and intolerant. There's also a dearth of blacks and Asians.

- No public transportation except for a bus system. White people love to live in places with public transportation (although they never seem to use it), but they hate buses, which apparently don't count as public transportation.

- No neighborhoods they like. They're all either too Hispanic, too boring and unoriginal, or too expensive and highbrow.

- They don't like the weather. It's too hot most of the time, which puts a major damper on their beloved outdoor activities. White people hate discomfort such as that caused by running around outside in 100-degree heat. They might do it anyway, but only to prove how tough they are.

Phish.

Last night I went to my first Phish concert. I was (1) not high and (2) fascinated as a sober observer by the melee of frenetic Caucasians, swaying and shaking and spinning, in a trancelike joyous state. The music was fantastic, but the demographic of the crowd made me wonder, why do white people like this music so much? Is it nature or nurture? I don't know.

Here's a good one for the list: Avoiding their Relatives. Stereotypically speaking, we are the only ethnic group without a strong, intrinsic sense of family. That's not to say that we don't love our families, but unlike most other groups who seem to have a strong sense of "These people are my family, therefore I love them," white people are more likely to judge which of their relatives they like or dislike on an individual basis. Just think of the motto: you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your relatives. This implies a sense of being trapped with your family, and, in an ideal world, most white people would love to be able to choose their family. This sentiment often results in white people avoiding their families, with the exception of the requisite holidays, in which they are obligated to spend it with one another because, quite frankly, that's what everyone is doing.
