An interesting fact about white people is that they firmly believe that all of the world’s problems can be solved through “awareness.” Meaning the process of making other people aware of problems, and then magically someone else like the government will fix it.
This belief allows them to feel that sweet self-satisfaction without actually having to solve anything or face any difficult challenges. Because, the only challenge of raising awareness is people not being aware. In a worst case scenario, if you fail someone doesn’t know about the problem. End of story.
What makes this even more appealing for white people is that you can raise “awareness” through expensive dinners, parties, marathons, selling t-shirts, fashion shows, concerts, eating at restaurants and bracelets. In other words, white people just have to keep doing stuff they like, EXCEPT now they can feel better about making a difference.
Raising awareness is also awesome because once you raise awareness to an acceptable, aribtrary level, you can just back off and say “Bam! did my part. Now it’s your turn. Fix it.”
So to summarize – you get all the benefits of helping (self satisfaction, telling other people) but no need for difficult decisions or the ensuing criticism (how do you criticize awareness?). Once again, white people find a way to score that sweet double victory.
Popular things to be aware of: The Environment, Diseases like Cancer and AIDS, Africa, Poverty, Anorexia, Homophobia, Midde School Field Hockey/Lacrosse teams, Drug Rehab, and political prisoners.

Did you ever stop to think about the fact that those same people who are raising awareness today are going to be the big decision makers in the future? Many of the individuals you see on street corners, or those organizing dinners and other events to ‘make themselves feel good’ are also actively working to change policies to put an end to the problems that they are spreading awareness about.
Think about it this way: you could either go on your own, and try to do what you can to make a difference, or you can do that, while at the same time, holding large events to attract people with a similar goal, while also informing those who were not aware of the problem. Now which makes more sense?

I think this is true about wealthy Americans in general. “Awareness” is all the rage in Hollywood, and there are people of every color spouting that shit.
I think the point of this issue is to get over white guilt. I think we all agree that it’s all well and good to be aware, and useless as shit if you don’t go do something about it (“spreading awareness” doesn’t really count, unless in conjunction with other action). Yes we all need to know the true story behind the crap our government does, what we’re putting in our bodies and what we’re being told by media sources. Yes many of the stories are sad and make us feel sympathetic, but have nothing to do with us in any immediate sense so we feel ok with forgetting them pretty quickly. Knowing these stories, however, puts you in a position of responsibility, not a position of power. Additionally, being and white and privileged doesn’t make you a bad person; being educated and apathetic does.
Sorry if that’s clichéd “white people speak”, but I’m pretty sure it applies even if you change the color in the above paragraph.

awareness is only a stepping stone to finding solutions. I can think of one such person who was fighting for awareness. His name was Malcolm Little. Another one would be Martin Luther King.
Don’t even bring Martin Luther King into this. He WENT TO JAIL, he risked his life by marching out into the streets, that’s nothing like the kind of goofy “awareness” being satirized here, which is nothing if not safe, self-congratulatory, and of little use.
Besides, MLK dedicated his whole life to his cause. He didn’t just go out and prance around for a few hours comfortably “for a cause” in between trips to Starbucks and shopping sprees.
And MLK wasn’t enamored with the idea of persecution like these coddled “protesters”…he believed in peace and didn’t go out punking cops, throwing things, and starting trouble, hoping to be arrested to prove how rebellious and hip he was. He actually cared about what he was preaching and did what it made the most sense to do to make the world better.

You can make ALL kinds of impact WITHOUT “raising awareness” in the ways described here. In fact, most people who actually do make an impact are the people not wasting their time with such nonsense.
Seeing someone marching down a street to make YOU aware of something that they aren’t doing anything practical to solve, accomplishes jack squat, besides being irritating. Seeing someone actually dedicating their time and effort to a cause, however, inspires others to do the same.

creating awareness is just one step in making change. i can’t speak for other white people, but i’ve always seen it as the first step in starting a movement. unless the mass population is aware of a problem, they can and will not do anything to try and help. if you inform them, and then provide them with a way to contribute to some sort of cause then you are promoting positive social action within your community.
of course, if you are just being the informer, it can seem annoying and self-serving to others. but it does a hell of a lot more for the world to live in a place where people are informed and are making conscious decisions about where they spend their money rather than sitting at home like me and reading lists of what white people like.
i have no problem for the dreaded white man or woman. I have never met one who was racist and just listened to marley and smoked weed, however it’s beyond me that someone would be able to make a sound judgment on another strictly based upon the way they style their hair.

While I agree with your comments and post, I wanted to point out that the photo you used was very inappropriate to portray your point. The people in this photo are from Engineers Without Borders Canada (EWB), a Canadian organization committed to working to eliminate poverty. The people at this Water March are likely dedicated members of their local chapter of the organization and participate in MANY other activities to work for change. This is the mantra of EWB and they emphasize the use of Public Outreach Events (like this) IN ADDITION to advocacy work within the government (ie. private meetings with the Director of CIDA and speeches to the Public Policy Forum), deep critical analysis of issues through development-related education for its members, and their own programs overseas to tackle “the challenges” themselves.
Additionally, not only was this public awareness activity not a one-off, feel-good activity, much of our outreach is done consistently and with educational materials provided, contact information collected, and follow-up done. EWB offers people tangible things they can “do” besides “feel good.”
I am not speaking on behalf of any other awareness raising events and would challenge other organizations in the same way that you have had – to actually raise more than money for a cause, but take serious consideration into how events can work to change people’s behaviours. Having been a member of EWB for a long time, I have personally been involved in the montitoring, evaluating, and transformation of our outreach and educational events to ensure we are maximizing the impact of our awareness in order to achieve our mission to end extreme poverty.

The saying “ignorance is bliss” means that, when you are unaware of problems, they do not bother you at all. For all of your purposes, the problem does not exist, even if effects of the problem are experienced by you, even if they are negative effects, you have nothing to attribute them, and might say something asinine like “that’s just the way god made it”, or whatever.
To imply that spreading awareness is not work, is, well that’s a thought of someone who’s never spread awareness, that is certain.
To spread awareness requires, first, understanding of an issue, which most Americans have a very superficial one.
The reason so many people come off as the fad-of-the-month activists, is because they usualy only know about what’s on the evening news and NPR. That’s all filtered. I don’t trust a minute of it, not to say there aren’t true stories, but sometimes its what you DONT say that matters.

Others have said it as well — awareness is an important part, but it needs to be coupled by action. If you are in a position where you’re good at learning, and organizing information so that it may be more easily learned by others, then your action is spreading awareness.

Many my wonder “how can our government allow this” — as if our military is a police department … but the truth is, dictators are often put into power by agents of our own secretive agencies. Until all this skin cancer and breast cancer “Awareness” started, I was pretty oblivious. I’m twenty and still think I’m invincible. I would lay out all day and could careless about checking my boobs (those mammograms looks horribly painful). But now I hardly ever lay out, load up on sunscreen, and stopped tanning in beds to make my natural tan, even tanner.
It wasn’t so much the media that scared as it was seeing the real people in my community who are battling cancer.
If you really care about Darfur, you could go there and work in one of the refugee camps… Oh, but that requires actual WORK, which is #1 on the list of things white people DON’T like.

I like this post. While it is still a satire like many of your other lists (which were also great), this one touches on a sensitive issue and I completely agree. With all the protesting going around, the protesters needs to realize what they are actually accomplishing. While i admire most of them for their effort, most of the “awareness” aren’t doing much.
One example would be Tibet. Many protesters have tried to spread “awareness” in Beijing this weekend. Here’s my question: what have they actually accomplished? The Chinese people already know white people wants the Chinese government to free Tibet, but THEY DON”T KNOW WHY. All they do is just hang a big banner that says “Free Tibet” or bring a Tibet flag in front of huge crowds without any explanation. The Chinese people are not aware of some of the tragedies that are happening in Tibet, so why not tell them? Instead, the protesters are just screaming at Chinese police, holding hands yelling “Free Tibet” or climbing buildings. All of this will only make the Chinese hate the white people even more.
PS: Let’s just enjoy the olympics for what it is, and not get too much into the politics.

Thank you for Highlighting this issue. For this particular White Man the burden of wearing all of these wristbands is proving problematic not to mention tiresome.
Also I cannot remember the last event I attended where a good time was the primary consideration. From Dying Children’s Last Wishes to Institutionalized Rape In The Congo, I find my social life has descended into a never ending round of awareness and fund raising.
My only hope is to somehow find the strength to no longer care and break the shackles of this particular “White Burden”.
I look with envy at my educated “non white” peers who are able to live a similar “purchased experience” lifestyle but are not afflicted with the psychic dissonance between their lifestyle and those less fortunate. For now I remain a White Man Of Privilege bound to his desk painfully aware of the poverty in the world and the advantages my parents have given me. I hope to God that some of my money and efforts no matter how small will add to the cosmic karma and lead to a better world. I am tired of awareness. When are all the dollars we shell out to cancer organizations actually gonna generate a CURE. We have funneled BILLIONS of dollars into research for more than 30 years. Like we need more “awareness”. I think it is the almighty force of greed that has prevented cancer from being stamped out.
No, it’s just that cancer is actually really hard to cure, because it’s not just one disease, it’s a million different diseases, each caused by different mutations in different steps of the cell cycle in different cells. So, actually, a lot of what that funding has gone to is figuring out all those mutations and steps and cells. And then also coming up with a couple great drugs, which unfortunately are available to the very few who have insurance willing to fork out for the hefty intellectual property.

What do you mean getting blasted? On the scheme of sterotypes this is extremely harmless. This is not “slamming” white people, its just silly. If it was malicious no one would read it and it would not be funny.
I think a lot of people are missing the point of this post. Fund-raising for a charity – no, fund-raising publicly to show the world there is a problem and show that you’re raising money for it – close. Public displays for a humanitarian cause with no intent to do anything to better the situation – bingo. Real “Awareness” like walks for Darfur, protesting Israeli retaliation of Lebanon, and Live8 are perfect in that they are ambiguously dedicated to bringing awareness, without raising any funds or having any potential for change. This is my favorite one yet.

Economists tend not to do anything. They observe and place blame. A lot of EWB’s efforts include actual implementation of things like sanitation devices for clean water, and ways to provide electricity. They do many projects that make use of the locals’ resources so that they can continue to do work after the implementation team has left. Technology is not the entire problem, but what EWB and DWB (Doctors without Borders) basically do is get out there and help people. No books, no endless essays, no finger pointing. Just ordinary professionals and students who plan a realistic project, concentrate on ONE THING, and get it done.

Well this articke is right on, I just Googled awareness and all i got was sites that sold books, clothing jewels, etc. Meetings in posh places like expensive restaurnas club houses or cruises. Sorry, that’s how I get through life. At work, in school and with other people. More of a Californian thing, if I wasn’t in the state of Cal. I think what these awareness things are/should be really about, is recruiting new people into the fold so we can make effective change. I haven’t seen or experienced yet the phenomenon of people backing out saying they “did their part” once awareness was raised.
Of course people don’t *say* they are backing out… they just change their Facebook status, or whatever, but then they don’t actually do anything constructive.
If, instead of posting some dumb status update about the color of your stupid bra, each one of those people donated $5, that might have some *actual* effect on helping stop breast cancer.

The purpose of raising awareness this way it to REMIND WOMEN WHO WEAR BRAS (meaning have boobs) to get checked/tested so that if it gets detected on time, you have a chance to get treated for it sooner, and have a better chance of surviving. Of course, if you don’t care about dying tomorrow for some stupid crap you could have been AWARE OF you had then go ahead, and keep hating on stupid bra colors people put on facebook.
THAT’S why you need to be aware. But hopefully your mom, nor your daughter, nor YOU will ever get cancer because nobody REMINDED them to get simple check up at the doctor… Or because you are just too self-entitled, and take life for granted to feel it can happen to you.

I’m raising awareness that you are probably dumb.
If all of the women who participated in this bra color thing donated $5 dollars, the total donations would be *gasp* more than five dollars.
Let’s try some real numbers.
Let’s assume that 10% of the women on Facebook participated. Let’s further assume that the proportion of women on Facebook roughly mirrors that of the world at large.
So the CIA estimates that 48% of the world’s population are women. [1] Facebook reports they have 200 million users. [2]
48% of 200 million is 96 million.
If 10% participated, that would be 9.6 million women.
9.6 million women * 5 dollars = 48 million dollars.
Let’s say the turn out was worse, only 5%. That’s still 24 million dollars.
Would you say that either of those dollar figures are insubstantial?
So please, do not add to the gross volume of stupidity in this world by trying to justify “awareness,” over dollars.
It’s sad to see how some people can only see as far as their justifications for self-important laziness extend.

I know what the writer is trying to say, and although I know it’s funny, and it is, because my God, yuppies and hipsters love to tell the world how “aware” they are and conscious of the suffering world; there is one thing that I can’t help but feel sad about: young white people actually getting off their asses to do something, and we get mixed in with the hipsters. I work in soup kitchens when I can, deliver food, and interact with the families and people I meet. I don’t care whether they’re poor or not, I just want to do something more than sit around and complain about social problems. I am white (or caucasian, more accurately) and I really think you’ve totally missed the point of the site. And yes, I think it is OK to make fun of a certain kind of white person. The author of the blog explains somewhere that this is not ‘really’ about white people, but about a certain kind of urbanite cultivated class (predominantly white) that spends their afternoons at Starbucks writing on their MacBook Pros (oops, that’s what I am doing at this very moment).
He also says that you don’t really have to be white to be ‘white’.
If you fail to see the witness and the sarcasm, as well as the acute social critique, well, perhaps you have to give it another try?

Sowell’s book ‘Black Rednecks & White Liberals’ (Encounter Books: 2005) is also an excellent read on the subject. This kind of resentment towards a race doesn’t help anything.
I never stated that atrocities were never committed by other people. However, there hasn’t been anyone that has done more damage to the culture of others to the extant that “White people” have. And by that I mean all “White people” that have done damage to another group of people based on color.
I don’t see “racist White Westerners anywhere” anywhere in my post. Though they certainly are the first group that comes to most people’s minds, they are only the most recent group.
Now i have read a lot and been told stories from men and women that have experienced the later slave days and the early days of legal “freedom” that wan’t enforced. There are also no accurate records of how many Africans were enslaved not just to the Americas but to other parts of the world thanks in part to British slave-trade. So just from what i know i highly doubt that there were more “Europeans” enslaved than Africans and that were treated any worse than African slaves.
Roots is pretty graphic but there are two things you should know: some slaves were treated worse and not everyone has seen Roots, most have heard of it, but not seen it.
Also i would like to emphasize that while there is a great deal of history “recorded” about the maltreatment of people of color(not just Africans) that there are things which were done that we may never know.
The only race i recognize is the human race. Identification by physical attributes is sometimes useful but is far to ambiguous to mark set groups of people.
Resentment? Excuse but if many people of color were able to know a full history of their family I’m sure there would be more than resentment.
The affects of slavery are self-perpetuating and it is very hard to break the cycle in today’s world. For people of color to know what it truly means to be equal and for white people to not have to feel bad for what their ancestors have done.
But to do that maybe a little resentment is needed, because people of color are being put down everyday. And many white people feel guilty of and on themselves when they find out what role someone as recent as their grandparents had to play in that maltreatment.
Thomas Sowell’s articles seem interesting enough so i will give some of those a read and see what he has to say

Let’s give each other a chance—on an individual basis—I know, I know, but this seems to be a lighthearted blog. No one has done anything to anyone here… or at least hadn’t done anything till now.
I’ve seen some things, but (and because of that?) I’ve got a clean slate. Unless someone is sowing hatred right here and now, he-himself, I can’t get mad at him. It’s becoming a little bit… fun (I know, that sounds weird, huh?). Maybe like when you’re playing a video game that used to be so hard, but then you finally start winning some levels.
Yeah, there are some crazily huge vicious cycles going on on this Earth. I guess all I can see is that the only time things can change is when each person himself really wants to do something new, with no one else pushing… no, the main thing that I see is that there is already too much suffering in this world. Anyway, the problems are big, but we’re not helpless to change them—the biggest challenge I can imagine is changing myself. But when people do that, everyone says, “He really inspired me”… so I’ve got to think there’s a bit of that die-hard hope in everyone.
Oh wellsies, I didn’t come to add to the preachiness or start some finger pointings, so I will just can it! (Don’t worry about it, as I’m not quite sure what I’ve said here either… I am long supposed to be in bed.)

Awareness is NOT bad… but it is the easy way out, to fake yourself and other to believe that you and them are really doing something useful, (not saying there is nothing useful there), but proportionally one does NOT deserve the praises, glory, resume ticks, etc. they receive for simply raising awareness.
*Guy who volunteers at a soup kitchen should receive a LOT more praises than a guy who raised awareness about hunger one night by sitting in his lawn and eating canned soup with his buddies or something. And he should not feel as accomplished as the Guy who did real work at the soup kitchen … but in our society, people who raise awareness receive a lot more praise than they deserve.
