Are you F***ing serious? In freaking Portland, the whitest city in the US? The place that makes Seattle look as diverse as Miami? Are you serious?
When I read that paragraph, I laughed so hard I almost peed.
Er, OK–let me see if I follow the gist of the complaints of the black residents remaining in the neighborhood: There’s less drugs and crime, it’s safer, and this is a problem for us remaining African-Americans. We don’t want our property values to go up, either, and I feel uncomfortable with these freindly whites on expensive bikes loitering on the streets.
I for one would cackle rather hysterically if I were to read an article like this in Baltimore.

I think the concern is black businesses are being pressured to sell because they can’t get the small business loans that the white business owners can. Apartments buildings get sold, the residents are evicted, and they get torn down – and replaced by condos the original residents could never afford. So they move elsewhere. A community that’s been more or less cohesive since the Vanport flood has been scattered.
As a (white) Portland resident, I don’t really know where to put my liberal guilt – on the one hand, scattering communities and pricing out poor people is kind of distasteful. On the other hand, can we keep a clear conscience and leave a community to languish in poverty and crime?
On the bright side, we haven’t had a traffic stop lead to a shooting in that neighborhood in like 4 years

Portland is a white person’s dream. Its close to the ocean, there are beautiful views, and the real estate is extremely affordable. New Yorker’s have wet dreams about “pioneering” there. I am making a prediction that in 15 years Portland’s real estate value will sky rocket to San Fran levels.

I live in Portland, this is the most overtly racist town I’ve EVER lived in. They are all tolerant only if you are exactly like them and celebrate “diversity” (read:mediocrity). If you disagree with them you are labeled a bigot, even if the word doesn’t even make sense in the context.

I was just at Wal-Mart last night. Low prices are just the beginning. Talk about a diverse crowd. White rednecks, teenagers, hispanics, blacks, handicapped people, and middle-class 20somethings like myself.
I have never been to Portland. I don’t care much for elitist upperclass libs stuck on diversity. I grew up in a poor white neighborhood with a good amount of blacks, asians, and Eastern Europeans for good measure. We weren’t hung up on getting along because: We just got along. Whitey–did you stay at an airport hotel, or something? Portland has long been known as a strip club/titty bar/adult theater capital. Actually, the trendy thing in Portland now is “alternative” strip clubs. In fact, an all-vegan strip club opened recently. I am not joking.
This blog is funny and pretty much accurate, but as for Whitey’s comment: What Portland did you visit? The Portland that I lived in has more porn stores and strip clubs than any place I’ve been. Don’t know if it’s true, but I heard somewhere that Portland has the highest number of sex businesses per-capita of any city in the country.

I live close to the Alberta neighborhood, and I hate this “gentrification” shit. All it amounts to is people saying “I hate the fact that white people are moving into our neighborhood.” How would that go over if it was reversed? Not too well.

This was back in 1999 or so, my hotel was in Tualatin. I ended up driving to Vancouver, WA to play some fucking cards. Maybe I didn’t look hard enough, but I really couldn’t find a titty bar at the time. Still, not even a Playboy to be found at 7-11? Seemed strange to me.

It’s the people who scream the loudest about “tolerance” and “diversity” who are the most INtolerant of people who hold different viewpoints. Diversity extends only to skin color and ethnicity. It does not extend to religion (unless it’s Buddhism, Wicca or something trendy with few moral demands) and certainly not politics (Republicans = Satan and his minions). Clarence Thomas did much less than Bill Clinton in the sexual harassment realm and he’s reviled while Bill Clinton is “the first black president”. Even Bill Cosby got slammed for daring to suggest that urban African-Americans would be taken more seriously if they spoke articulately instead of using Ebonics, applied themselves in school and ditched the baggy jeans.
I can’t help but shake my head at the fact that people are tripping over themselves to move into neighborhoods I got the hell out of as fast as I could.
Liberals seem to find this strange, but when I hear someone complain about rising property values, lowering crime, and more commerce in an area, I suggest they go get their heads examined.
A worldview like that is the reason neighborhoods become ghettos in the first place. Instead of bitching and moaning about ‘keeping it real’ they should just charge what the market will bear, take the money, and move into another slum after they spend it all on booze, broads, and blow.
If they really had any sense, they’d either rent out their homes or develop their property and really rake in the cash. Of course, that second option would require loans, and if someone’s defaulted on every credit card they’ve ever had, they may as well go to Vinnie in the back room gambling den.
The plain and simple truth is that one way or another, people have to face the consequences of their actions, no matter how much liberals try to change that fact of life. Rent instead of buy, and not only are you throwing money away, you’re at the mercy of the landlord. Don’t pay your bills on time, and you can forget about getting a decent rate on a loan. Keep your mouth shut when you witness a robbery or murder, don’t complain when your house gets broken into or your kid gets his head blown off.

hmm… until i read this article, i’ve been hearing nothing but good stuff about portland. it’s a bummer cuz my wife & i were thinking of possibly moving there.
unfortunately, all “hip/trendy” liberal neighborhoods in america are guilty of unintentional (let’s hope it’s unintentional) racism by gentrifying areas, either by pricing out the poor/minorities, or preventing them from moving in.
look at park slope, brooklyn, one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the country (where my wife & i got priced out of, &) where brownstones easily go for 2, 3, 4+ million. even 10-15 years ago, the area had a lot of blacks, hispanics, artists, musicians, writers. now it’s mostly white corporate execs and their (green & righteous) wives pushing strollers. oh, and trust fund kids.

not that it’s so bad that the privileged are occupying the area, and i’m not seeing any harsh mis-treatment to the non-whites, immigrants or the poor. no lynchings or making people go to the back of the bus, here.
however, what i am seeing is “un-treatment” towards them. simply ignoring them, as if they don’t exist. almost like, excluding them from the community.
here is an example of a passive-aggresive un-treament: john jay high school on 7th ave in the heart of park slope is a school with a bad reputation (many say it’s just because majority of the students are black), and their kids are restricted from going into the area’s fancy botique shops, even barnes & noble which is only a block away, until the evening. i’ve overheard people in a coffee lounge talking about that school’s kids as if they’re a pimple/eye-sore in a picture-perfect neighborhood. stuff like this angers me.
i bet 100% of these newly-arrived rich park slopers will say they are not racists. they know it’s wrong. but more importantly, it’s not a hip/trendy/brangelina thing to do. ok, i’m being hard on them.
of course, not everyone are like this. i’ve seen many many kindness from whites to blacks, and i’m sure there are many unseen generosities by affluent folks.
but i can’t help but notice hispanic delivery men being spoken to as if they are little children, or white moms with strollers only talking to other white moms with strollers. and then talking to more white moms with strollers.

Not everyone’s definition of tolerance is the same. And not everyone is going to take kindly to being TOLD they MUST be tolerant. It’s certainly not an inalienable right, nor is it a commandment in the Bible. I don’t think that it’s even appropriate in some cases (i.e. “urban” kids using ebonics).
Some people have had enough of tolerance being shoved down their throats. People are either tolerant or they’re not and no amount of education or punishment is able to change that.
Myself, I do my part to accept what I am able to accept within the constraints of my personality. Believe me, if a young “urban” person comes up to me babbling up an ebonics storm, you bet your ass I’m going to look at him like he has an eye in the middle of his forehead.

I know what am lacking. I am lacking gun play on a daily basis, rampant poverty, police & gang harassment, a liquor store every five feet, squalor, depression, anger, helicopters overhead day and night, crappy schools, worries about my children getting shot or joining a gang then getting shot (or going to prison), myself or my wife getting shot. Is there anything I missed? I like my white neighborhood. You know what? There are blacks who also live in my neighborhood, and they seem to like the peace too. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me projecting my own liking for a quiet, peaceful neighborhood with wide streets, good schools, good shopping close by–but not too close–being able to have UPS or Fedex just drop packages off on my doorstep without anyone home because we know the couriers and we also know no one is going to take our stuff, well kept houses, neighbors who watch out for each other (and aren’t looking out for the police), etc, etc. Now, most people who live here have lived here for many years, and very few move out. This is not because they can’t afford to do so, it is because they don’t want to. None of us is going hunting for a barrio or ghetto to renovate; we like it just fine where we are, thank you very much. These weirdos who insist upon thrusting themselves onto neighbors in need of dire assistance, only to turn them into some bizarre white safari, need to get a grip on reality and understand that suburb does not equal plastic or sellout or racist haven. The suburbs can be just a nice place to live. Is their anyone, who is sane, who wants to live in a rundown, nasty, crime ridden mess? No one sane does.

Gentrification is not a racial matter, it is a societal matter. The big reason people move into poorer neighborhoods is because they cannot afford housing in more expensive neighborhoods. If the cost of housing in this country decreased and people made more money, then they wouldn’t migrate to poorer neighborhoods unless they were looking for diversity or to escape the trends. The housing value of these neighborhoods go up because eventually they become a safe (and/or hip) place to live. Then all the posers daddies buy places and the value skyrockets. If you lived in this neighborhood before all this then your house went up in value too. So what’s the problem?
I don’t see gentrification as an enemy of any person, unless you want to sling on that block. And most home owners would have a problem with that regardless.
I do think that it’s wrong to make this a racial issue.
Plan and simple: I do not make enough to purchase a home in Manhatten, Brooklyn is right over there and affordable. What would you do?
If not for the automobile and the modern freeway system, there probably still would be segregation. White people became tolerant of de-segregation only after they knew they could get far enough away from their former white part of town and avoid the implosion that happened in the cities.

I was there last night at that spot where that picture was taken, and I can promise you that I was not looking at the abundance of middle-class white families with babies, I was looking at the guys dressed as astronauts. I’ve only ever been to Alberta for Last Thursday, but take away the street vendors and it’s just like any other neighborhood on the East side, derelict and coffee shops full of prepubescent hipsters and all.

Hey I’m a minority dude living in Portland. I’ve heard someone say to me once that Portland has the most ‘diverse’ white people in the world. When I’m around town I notice the stark contrast and sometimes have to go to other neighbourhoods just to be amongst some real ethnic diversity. But just because it’s majority white isn’t what bothers me in this town. It’s that in a town where things should be kept “weird” and people preach diversity so many people conform to the same trends – i.e. the fixed gear cyclist with the striped socks, the subaru driving yuppie, the s.e. hipster – people who think they’re being unique end up looking like everyone else. The guy who looks like he just woke up looking that way for Saturday brunch is trying way too hard.

I was in DC in 1976 to visit my grandfather, so clearly, I have been to DC. I visited the National Zoo where I saw Hsing Hsing and Ling Ling, the giant pandas. I purchased a commemmorative mug with both pandas on it and I still have it! Then we went to Georgetown and found this quaint little brownstone store where I bought my “Swingin’ Granny”–a wooden toy which was a little old woman on a swing. I still have her, too! I’ve been to The Flagship restaurant on the Potomac River which was the catalyst for my love of lemon chicken. Clearly, you are authorized to tell me where I’ve been and haven’t been.

She has never taken her son to a black doctor, nor has her husband ever seen one. My husband has never had a black doctor. Neither of my children has ever had a black doctor. I can speak with great authority that my aunt, uncle and cousins never have, my mother, father, brother and sister never have. All of their respective spouses and children have not, either. I have never had a black ER physician, either. Neither have my husband and children.
This is a sizeable amount of people in different areas from different walks of life who have never SEEN a black doctor, let alone be seen by one.
I’m not trite enough to say there aren’t any, when obviously there are. We’re talking about white people here. “Grey’s Anatomy” is a white person show. There are bound to be the “token” blacks, just like any show aimed at a white demographic.
Furthermore, ask your average black person what GRAY’S ANATOMY is and aside from the show, they probably won’t know.

I own a small business a block from where that picture was taken, and the last time I was there I walked up the taqueria at 20th to get lunch, and had to thread a maze of parents with kids in strollers, dogs on leashes, etc etc. Every month on Last Thursday, in the six or so months of the year with nice weather, the street is filled with white people strolling slowly in and out of the art galleries and coffee shops, staring at the hippie kids on the side walks selling their bad art. Phew! Yeah, it’s nauseating, but the alternatives are (and were) worse. Alberta was rough street when I moved there in ’95. Boarded up buildings, gun fights, prostitution, drug dealing, gangs, the works. The city came in and started handing out small grants to restore storefronts, and everything followed until you have what you see today. One of the biggest proponents (and likely beneficiaries) of this gentrification was a black woman named Roslyn. She had the vision to see the potential in the neighborhood, and started buying up and remodeling distressed properties. All the buildings in the neighborhood with corrugated tin siding and roofs are hers. Count ’em, there are a lot. Interesting note: In the background of the photo, all blurry, is a detached house with windows filled with hand written signs decrying the gentrification and racism of the neighborhood. What? Do they want to go back to the bad old days? Sure, I’m sad to see black renters displaced by white yuppies coming in and buying up the houses. There are winners and losers. But let’s not throw the whole idea out because of it.

Anyway, about 2 or 3 weeks ago, they featured a program in Texas where prisoners who’d been in prison for as many as 26 years were being freed due to DNA evidence. Most of these prisoners were black, although there was one white guy in the special. By the time the special aired they had freed more than 50 wrongly accused men. One of them qualified for parole long ago but was not released because he refused to falsely admit his guilt, which the courts held as a lack of remose for what he had done. As he explained, it was really just a refusal to admit to something he did not do, when you’ve spent your life in jail all you have is your personal integrity left. They were all put there by the same DA, and so volunteers today (most of them were white) participated in a project focusing on freeing the innocent. I didn’t know this but a prosecutor who withholds crucial evidence from the defence only gets a slap on the wrist, there are no serious repercussions. And of course they still get the promotion for winning the case.
Anyway, something to think about.

It’s funny you should mention this, my boyfriend and I have talked about this on 2 occasions. We talked about how most of these people (gang members) are high school dropouts. Compare that to the fact that people who marry interracially are almost exclusively college-educated (look up “interracial marriage” on wikipedia for stats). America is not divided along racial lines so much as it is class lines. People with money and education will associate with other people with money and education. In fact, even as a gay man, I’m pissed off at the HRC pushing for equal rights of marriage. Civil unions at the federal level would have been awesome compared to the shitstorm we’re in now. Because of the long history of discrimination against black people in America, they are still at a disadvantage when it comes to assets and credit. I’m sure you’re going to disagree with me, but at it’s core marriage is not about showing the world how much you love someone, or stroking your ego, or having a ring to show off to your friends.
It’s about providing a healthy, nurturing environment for a man and woman to bear and raise children. The simple, cold hard fact is that a man, a woman, and their children, preferably by blood, is the ideal situation for childrearing.
Now, whether a same-sex couple can provide a better situation than a dysfuntional straight couple can probably go either way.
While anectdote isn’t the singular of data, I have seen that kids raised in singe-parent, foster, or same-sex couple homes have tended to turn out far worse than kids raised in a ‘traditonal’ family, even when the parents stuck together just for the sake of the children.
Without fathers, boys end up thugs and girls strippers. Not all the time, but far more than normal. And people I’ve known who were raised by gays tended to be walking collections of nueroses.
Now, if you want to have civil unions, ensure inheritance, power of attorney, etc., I have no problem with that. But demanding marriage just insults the hell out of me, and thousands of years of tradition. It’s not about you, it’s not about telling the whole world what you do in your bedroom, it’s about raising a family.
And, while I’m usually leery of slippery slope arguments, it’s pretty damn clear that as soon as you have ‘marriage’, the FLDS freaks and Mohammedans will be next in line to legitimize polygamy. The Goreacle believes marriage should apply to “any group of people who love each other”, whatever the hell that means. And I’m sure the animal lovers will start howling (pun intended) to legalize marriage between man and bitch, in the original meaning of the word.
Now personally, I don’t care what you do in the privacy of your own home, or who with, as long as they are willing and of legal age. I don’t shove my kinks into the face of everyone I meet, and I much prefer they do the same. Europeans and Canadians seem to spend a lot of time and energy thinking about America, demonizing it for it’s health care system, which has the best care and highest survival rates in the world, it’s gun laws, although it has far less crime than most countries (especially in states with concealed carry), and it’s capitalism, which has resulted in the largest economy and lowest unemployment in the world.
As for what Americans think of you: generally speaking, we don’t. Nor do we need to. You rely on our protection, not the other way around. You pose no threat to us, much as a large segment of your populations would like to.

I frequent black blogs as well (being both black and white, I feel equally comfortable in both spheres) and I’ve seen actually seen black Americans say that seeing all those white people “show up” for Obama, 75,000 in Portland, winning the Iowa caucus, has made them appreciate white people more and realize that they don’t all hate black people as they may have thought. It’s actually fostered greater unity in some American communities and in some workplaces.
Anyway, I think it can only do good things. Mind you, I’m an armchair theorist, I’m not even able to vote seeing as how I live in Canada and all, and like it that way.
For God knows what reason, I’m going to dignify your question with a response. My father is white (born in Germany during the second world war). My boyfriend is white. Portland isn’t conservative at all, it’s the rest of the state that’s largely conservative. PDX has huge and thriving sex industry and it has been recorded it has more strip clubs per capita than Las Vegas. Granted you can’t get a skin mag at Plaid Pantry, but the smaller convienent store chains like Peterson’s doesn’t even have the nudie mags isolated from the rest of the store.

Well, Portnoy, I’m going to have to agree with you on that one – up to a point. Black people have never ever seen a black candidate stand a shot at getting the presidential nomination. So, until it’s commonplace and we’ve seen like a million black presidents, yes, they will always root for the black candidate because it inspires them – us – and let’s us know that if we work hard, anything is achievable, race is not an excuse not to follow your dreams.

I almost never think about America actually, unless I’m watching guilty pleasures like “Springer” or “The OC” or speaking to an American who is ignorant. But trust me, it’s not like we spend all our time thinking about the States.
I have already had the chance to move there, I have a good chunk of family living there. The thing is, my quality of life is better here, because I get treated better than I would there, I have a middle-class lifestyle whereas in the States the middle-class is much smaller, people tend to have money or be low-income, but middle-class is a more elusive thing, rent is cheaper than in the cities there and I’m young, you guys are in a recession and we avoided the last one you guys had and we’re avoiding this one too, I can afford to get my teeth checked, and for many other reasons. I was approached by a modelling agent in NYC when I was 16 a few days before what was supposed to be the end of my trip, and he asked me to stay and do an interview with him, but I was homesick… and I went home.
I think the biggest issue that everyone else in the entire known world has with Americans is their arrogance. They literally think they are the best thing in the world, but when worldwide surveys are taken of where people want to live, other countries consistently beat them. The fact of the matter is, without socialized healthcare, the country is undesirable for most people. That’s the long and short of it.
For me, it’s a lot more than that as well. I think the climbing high school dropout rate is unacceptable. There is a country that is much worse in this regard though, and that country is England. For every bad thing you can say about America’s escalating drug use and dropout rate, England is 10X worse.
There are big cultural differences between the places, Europe (minus England), Canada, and the States. The States has this mig, divisive, tumultuous history, they add more sugar and salt to American food than to food in the other places, even if it’s the same establishment, and America is much more religious, whereas the other places are much, much more secular.
I don’t know, there is so much to be said about the differences and the perceptions there that it’s almost not worth bothering to talk about.
The interesting thing about Canadians is that we have a lot of tension with the French-speaking members of the country. English Canadians and French Canadians DO NOT really get along. That said, we don’t like the way Americans hate the French, the “freedom fries” debacle, and all of that.
Also, I think you’re a little uninformed – America’s violent crime rate is much higher than any other developed country. In most of Europe, someone gets stabbed and it’s still always front-page news.
Are you serious? I live in north portland. Went to school (high school, college, grad school) in portland. Now work for the gov and I am an under 30 black male. Redlining and discrimination in loans has been a long practiced ritual in Portland until the city club of Portland busted in in the Oregonian in the 80’s. Look it up. It is now more covert than ever.

Obama is never going to win for the simple reason that he is running in America, and America is still very racist. They polled Canadians and 85% said they would vote for Obama if the choice was up to them; 15% backed McCain. But the (obvious) fact of the matter is, America is not Canada, and that’s why I doubt he’ll be able to win there, no matter how charismatic he is.
I’m Canadian too and I find it funny how my most “liberal” friends seem to be the ones with the least amount of faith in Americans to support Obama. Then he pretty much – relatively – kicks Hillary’s ass, considering what was assumed before the Iowa caucus, and now they say, America’s still “just not ready”, like they own the crown of righteousness. There are plenty of colour-blind people in the states, and thankfully, they’re the one’s rising into positions of power these days.

I’m not quite sure what the problem with Khaela Maricich’s comment is, exactly? Unless you think the solution to Portland’s problems is that she ceases to be white, make art, or both, before she has any thoughts on the subject? Or, God forbid, tries to actually do something about it? However ineffectual it may turn out to be – but that’s the risk you take when you take part in any sort of activism, isn’t it. Do you think that any sort of activism is wrong, if it supported by mostly whites? What about, say, the Black Panthers? (Whoalso believed in free health care – maybe they were also elitist obsessed with Europe?)
What makes their activism different, the fact that they were willing to disobey the law, or that they were black and (partially) working class?
Of course the Restorative Listening Project has the potential of being just another way to make middle class white liberals feel better without actually addressing the problem. Congratulations on picking up on that.
But it sounds like the organizers are trying to find ways to actually translate the understanding into action, like supporting local (black) businesses, harassing business that are urging blacks to sell their property in “up and coming” areas, etc. There needs to be more action, for sure. But if you insist on seeing the problem of gentrification as a problem of white people wanting to – or, more accurately in my experience – having to live in ethnic working class neighborhoods, you are not going to effect the problem beyond writing sarcastic blogs (primarily hailed by white teenagers – even non-whites have to appreciate the irony of that?)
What about the problem of class differences in the first place – ridiculously unequal pay, ridiculously high cost of education, terribly underfunded public schools, medical bills that can put a working class family out of commission for life…? And then real estate and zoning laws compounding the problem?
I’ve lived in a lot of these “newly integrated” areas in my life.
I’m definitely met with some understandable hostility from long time (black) residents, but I met more people who were just plain friendly to me. And many community organizations were doing a lot of political work to prevent rezoning and protect stabilized rents and local businesses, without scape goating the new white or black middle class residents.
They were non-profit activist organizations… does that make them “white” by definition then?
I just don’t buy the idea that most blacks are so angry with any development, that just hasn’t been my experience. Especially the younger blacks in the areas tended to embrace more bars, more restaurants, more cafes serving iced lattes in the summer alongside the KFC’s, Golden Crusts, and cheap Chinese food. I don’t get what makes you think only white people like food that isn’t deep fried once in a while?
Some (about one fourth, in my last neighborhood) of these places were owned and run by blacks (if they were long term residents of recent transplants I have no idea, but that distinction seems to be meaningless to Christian Lander anyway.)
If you want to talk about serious political issues like gentrification, why don’t you tell us what your constructive ideas are, instead of hiding behind sarcasm?
