When someone goes through a stressful experience they usually require some time off to clear their head, regain focus, and recover from the pain and suffering. Of course, in white culture these experiences are most often defined as finishing high school, making it through three years of college, or working for eleven months straight with only two weeks vacation and every statutory holiday (“they don’t count because I had to spend them with family.”)
Though you might consider finishing school or having a good job to be “accomplishments” many white people view them as burdens. As such, they can only handle them for so long before they start talking about their need to “take a year off” to travel, volunteer, or work abroad.
It is most common for the person taking the year off to use this time to travel (see Post #19 for reasons why). Generally, they will start off with a set amount of money that will use to travel for as long as possible. This explains why a white person with an $800 backpack will haggle with a poverty-stricken street vendor about a $2 dollar plate of food.
If you work with this person, be sure to give them a FAKE email address on their last day on the job or you will be inundated with emails about spiritual enlightenment and how great the food is compared to similar restaurants back home. Also, within the first five days following departure, this person will come up with the idea to write a book about their travel experience. Sadly, more books about mid-twenties white people traveling have been written than have been read.
Some of the more enterprising white people will extend their time off by working abroad as a bartender, ski lift operator, or english teacher. Their stories, emails, and publishing plans will be identical to the previous white person but will include additional stories about working and complaints about “tourists.”
Finally, there is the white person who takes a year off to volunteer at home or abroad. Though they are equally likely to write long emails about their experience, these people are often using the experience as an excellent resume pad for their application to law school. This way they are able to put off real life without the crippling derailment of a career or education.
Regardless of how a white person chooses to spend their year off, they all share the same goal of becoming more interesting to other people. Sadly, the people who find these stories interesting are other white people who are politely listening until they can tell their own, more interesting story about taking a year off.
Thankfully, there is an enormous opportunity for personal gain. You see, whenever a white person takes a year off it opens up a valuable apartment, job opportunity or admissions slot. Consider it to be the most pretentious form of affirmative action.

A lot of white people who take a year off create a blog where they can document their experiences and lessons learned. ABSTRACT: LETTER FROM CHINA about two former Peace Corps volunteers on the road to the Tibetan Plateau. All along Highway 110 the writer and his friend saw signs for Strange Stones—the Chinese term for a small rock shaped into a familiar form. It was 2002. The writer was driving a rented Jeep Cherokee, and Mike Goettig was along for the ride. They had met in the Peace Corps years earlier, and, after finishing their stint there, they’d each found a different way of staying in China: the writer worked as a freelance writer; Goettig opened a bar in the southwest. This is more of a Euro thing than a white folks thing. Yes, teachers used to take a “year of sabbatical” back in the late 60s and early 70s, but that’s passé. Euro folks take the “year off” between high school and college (what they so loftily call “Univerrrrrrsity”). Adults do it when they’re bored with their jobs… or between them.

Ah this post hits very close to home. I am taking the scenic route through college. I went to college for 2 years out of high school, then took 3 years off to work (in an entry-level position that held almost no responsibility, so I could party fri-sun and throw up in the bathroom all day Monday, sometimes even into Tuesday mornings as well). At 22 I went back to school part time (3 classes per semester at a community college), then finally transfered to a four-year state school when I was 24. At 25, took another year to study abroad in France, and will be finally getting my BA in political science this year, at the age of 27.
But wait…there’s more! I’m going to take another year or 2 to travel the world, then go back to school to get a Masters in International Relations. To be honest I don’t really ever plan to work, per se. I generally feel that I am just killing time until someone gets me pregnant.

There are two ways you can remedy this. Either you can write “white people” or say “his or her.” White grammar snobs often like to write something like this: “Regardless of how a white person chooses to spend her year off, she shares the same goal of becoming more interesting to other people.” Using the feminine pronoun is both grammatically correct and challenging to the male patriarchy! White person perfection.

A load of people (especially Americans) decide to come to Spain for the culture, the fiesta, the paella, etc and end up hanging out with Americans trying to do the same thing, and going for lunch to TGI Fridays. I love the US and Americans are great people but they take their travelling not too seriously when it comes to culture trips such as these. (I’m thinking about doing something similar in China and I’m worried I’ll eventually do the same thing.)

The 120 things listed apply mainly to young college-educated white Americans on the coasts (maybe Canadians too), who make up only a minority of the total white population in the world. What about white people who are over 35, or live in Europe, Russia and its former satellites, Latin America, or other parts of the world? I suspect your average white Argentine, South African, or Russian probably does not act in the way you describe, and even in America, the older generation and those in the Deep South do not really conform to many of your stereotypes.
If you are to describe what white people like, surely you should look at the habits of white people from all over the world, and not just one little corner of North American society that you (and, it seems, many of your readers) happen to inhabit.

I’ve noticed it doesn’t always have to be a year or after an almost year commitment. Wish I had the money and carefree to do that – nah, not really.
That has to be one of the clearest most concise SWP topics in quite a while. The idea along with all the pseudo factual data as commentary appears to be well thought out and presented. Every fact covers all of my friends from my younger days. A year off! Some of my High School and college classmates are still either at the country of their sebatacle or in the volunteer/foundation job. It’s now 20+ years later. I use to envy them. However they still drive the same SAABs and volvos and live in their inherited grandparent’s homes. I’m not a fan of driving a 1980s SAAB to work in 2009.

In all seriousness, taking a year-off after finishing school is something I’ve considered for a long time. I was raised to value community, and to give back to others for what I have received.
Some parts of this post bother me, but only because it speaks truth. By this I mean the part about heckling with a poverty-stricken street vendor over $2 of food while lugging around an expensive backpack. I find that frustrating, and think it’s routed in the American culture of being competitive, that at times we compete with those that we have a very clear advantage over.
To the authors of this blog: I appreciate your satire. Although I find your blog entries humorous (especially when I fit the stereotype), I also find it very disheartening to see the true behind the jokes. Thanks for bringing things to my attention, but doing so in an entertaining way rather than accusatory.
Now I think maybe I really do just want to be more interesting to other white people 😉

I was visiting a friend in Mexico last month, and a “white people” took 15 minutes and visited and re-visited 3 vendors before getting a bottle of water, because he thought the vendors were ripping him off. He ended up saving, and I am not exaggerating, 1 peso (ca. 7cent US, or 0.05EUR). He was proud of not being treated as a tourist.
As a parent, I deplored the year off. I was wise enough not to pay for it. As a person, I have decided to take the rest of my years off. I too deplore the tourists.

I am white and I would love a year off but unfortunately, I am too damn broke to do so. There is no way that I could afford such a luxury. I have considered working as an English teacher but the reality of you getting a job is slim to none, especially if you don’t speak the language of the country that you plan to live in. The Pilgrams actually all graduated at the same time and decided to take spring break in Massachusetts together.
Taking a year off in a third world country is not a bad idea economically. I suspect that may grads will be doing that for a few years until the economy heats up again. Atleast the people going to Bolivia for a year are spending their own money, as opposed to people that get student loans, or even worse Peace Corp “volunteers” who are in effect being gifted their trip. For Americans, spending time in a foreign country is a way to save on health care insurance.
This is not a white thing exactly. I once met a Japanese construction worker in the US for about 8 months who was doing what you describe. I suspect that you will start seeing more and more Asians in the US doing what you suggest. Note when you see a non white wandering about, you think illegal alien. They might actually be here taking a year off.

You make an interesting point. There are far too many westerners (you cant just say white people as I’ve seen plenty of non-white westerners doing exactly the same thing) who go to a foreign, eastern/poor country with the ‘goal of becoming more interesting to other people’ or as many do sit around and drink with the other westerners ignoring the local culture.
As I’ve done a bit of travelling myself and I’d have to say I don’t do it to make myself more interesting to others. For me its learning local history and about the locals so I don’t become one of those fools that ‘went there saw that’ and learnt nothing.
As a slight side point at 500dreads.com is one white guy trying to do something for the non-white poor people of the world. In addition to working with the charity in poor countries he took a 7 day challenge to drum up some support for them. Lived for 7 days on $7. He rightly pointed out how much westerners waste that could be given to a better cause.

And when they go to do some kind of volunteer work for poor colored folk…I mean people of color…it usually is useless tasks that only make the white person feel good and superior to the other white people back home (who are working for real and contributing to society). The poor people of color would beneift much more if the white person had just mailed them cash.
I didn’t know that I was trying to maintain my whiteness by trying to go abroad to teach English. I did open a white apartment and job to fellow white people. Boy, am I sad that my whiteness scared off the Koreans! Does this make me less white?

When my new co-workers at my first post-law school job found out that I had been out of undergrad for 8 years before I went to law school, they asked me (with straight faces and, I believe, earnestly), “So what did you do for 8 years? Did you travel?” When I responded that I worked and paid bills for 8 years, they looked at me like I was mental.

i took a year off and didn’t discover anything besides the fact that i’m really lazy. i went back to school for two years and then took another year off because i had learned about my laziness and knew that i would need another year off. i’m entering year five of the pursuit of my very white english degree. if i haven’t graduated in two years, i’m going to take another year off to be lazy.

I have decided to take a year off. I mean being a total slackass is taxing on one’s stamina. I have slackassed in 4 states this year and I need some time off before I do it again. Now all I need to do is figure out what taking a year off from slackassedness would be comprised of?
Not moving at all? Or perhaps only moving if someone else puts forth the effort to move me. Maybe it entails going out and doing physical labor. NAW that can’t be it.
Lots of white women kill time this way until they get pregnant, most white women I know. Then you can empower yourself by going back to work, or choosing not to work, and if you do choose to work, you can then quit so you can find yourself again. Baby daddy ain’t so lucky, he has to work, baby or no baby.
I blame the boomers: those who were raised in the suburbs by parents with more disposable income than ever before, those who raced off to “further their education” to avoid being drafted (i.e., escaped to a new locale to avoid scary, grown-up work), then became obsessed with their own youthful energy while living off even MORE disposable income than their parents once had. They popularized the notions that self-absorption is healthy and prolonged adolescence is valuable.
How do you expect THEIR kids to make the successful transition from school to full-time work without “taking a break”? They weren’t taught that a job well done can be its own reward. They were taught to “follow your heart,” “do what you love,” and “keep that childlike sense of wonder.” Well, what they love is to be lazy, and instead of having childlike wonder, they just became childish. Thank goodness we now have a president who’s admonished us to set aside childish things (and who, not surprisingly, is post-Boomer).

My father was a rich son of Ivy-League bankers, and my mother the daughter who spent 20 years finding herself courtesy of my hard-working, scrimping, saving grandparents.
It drives me crazy that my boomer parents, who benefited from their parents diligence and stability, didn’t leave any for us! Thanks to their irresponsibility, I’ve been working non-stop since the age of 16 and have a mountain of debt, school-loans, and lost opportunities.
On the other hand, I guess its cool that I inherited some of their ideals (of course they have been tempered by my experience in the real world). But I’m grateful that I was taught to judge people based on character, and that money doesn’t buy happiness, and that people should follow their hearts. Oh and I guess the whole legacy of civil rights/women’s rights is nothing to sneeze at, either.
I guess this proves white people also like to whine.
Oh and I, too, am thrilled to have a post-boomer president. Maybe now we can get some work done!

When I was in Europe during my year off, sometimes I couldn’t find a hostel (I didn’t make “plans” like some punk-ass tourist) and I had to call home to my parents to have them wire me money for a hotel. Not content with talking about ordinary Holywood movies, white people obsess over ‘cult’ movies, the earlier the better.
“There’s too much focus on special effects nowadays”, they will say, or “the art of narrative is dying.”
Of course, they do not actually mean this. They love Holywood just as much as you and me; check out their DVD collections and you will find a lot more Bruce Willis than Klaus Kinski (“oh, that’s just to slob out to”, they will say).
It is the idea of high-brow movies that appeals to them, and more than anything, white folks like being seen at a theatre where a cult movie is playing.
Now that you know this, you can easily use it to your advantage on your white acquaintances. Next time something by David Lynch or Werner Herzog comes on at the local art-house cinema, stand around outside the doorway waiting for them to arrive, then pretend you were going along, too.
Suggested lines: “Oh, nothing has captured modern alienation in the same way that Eraserhead did!” or “Golly, horror as a genre peaked at Nosferatu!” And whatever you do, don’t call them ‘movies. Use the word ‘cinema’ instead and watch them nod with knowing approval, or something like it.
Then of course you can borrow money off them! They will lend it to you out of pity, and you can go and spend it eating popcorn and watching something people actually like. Try it!

i took a year off after high school to work and save money so i could afford to go to college, since i had to pay for it out of pocket.. then when i had enough to pay for classes and books, i still had to work two jobs to continue to pay my way through school… i never could afford to go to Europe or anywhere else… and i’m white.

First of all, this blog has obviously been very successful and has a lot of supporters, and I congratulate you on that.
But it’s not clear to me why this is “Stuff White People Like”. The implication is that it’s stuff white people like that non-white people don’t like, and if that was true then it would have comedic potential. But take “Taking a Year Off” for example: wouldn’t everyone like to take a year off? A lot, maybe most, people can’t or don’t, and maybe most of the people that do are white, but it doesn’t strike me as something that white people in particular like more than non-white people.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t find anything offensive about what your doing, and in a different context it might be funny, but the Blog name puts a slant on it that makes it less funny than it might be in a more deadpan publication like The Onion (#109).
I’m not sure what I hope to achieve with this comment, but I feel better having articulated it. Thank-you for reading.

Although I went to school full time and worked full time at the same time, a couple years later I got my first taste of 2 weeks off straight and my first ever vacation. Now I know why people who can afford it do it.
Of course I took the Hawaii route rather than something enlightening like Costa Rica or Europe… but thats because I’m aware that my first priority is laziness when I can afford it and my second priority is seeing something beautiful because I’ve always lived in rural farming communities and orchards are not that exciting.
Had a roommate who’s parents were paying for his school though, went to Hawaii yearly and constantly talked about taking a year off to do these things. And about how much he loved Jazz music, as if every post here was written about knowing him… he did consider himself quite well rounded and cultured. Oh shit, write a post about how white people LOVE wikipedia.

I see no problem with white people taking a year off now and then to recuperate. After all, we’ve been slated with this horrible burden of “majority” to bear, a tiresome and restraining experience of being given the best jobs, educations, and housing, which has left us understandably exhausted. Deciding between being a CEO or a CPA, between Harvard or Yale, between a two-floor apartment on New York’s Upper East Side or a mansion in Miami are choices we would happily foist onto other segments of society. These things make our heads spin.
I want to take some years off between getting my Biology degree and going into grad school. I plan to spend the time volunteering in 3rd countries, because that might help me decide what i will find fulfilling to do for the rest of my life- med school, genetics, breeding tasty low-maintenence animals to eat, etc. I think it’s a good idea. Go Peace Corps!

Why do science majors think they have it so hard? I was a History major and I took a lot of hard sciences and a couple math classes. I found History classes to be much more demanding. You have to keep up with heavy reading and have to write lots of long research papers. With the sciences, you just have to understand the material and be able to spit it back out. With History (and other humanities) you have to come up with your own ideas and rigorously defend them. Doing this requires lots of independent research and lots of reading outside of the syllabus.
A whole 7 days?
I took a year off after working for five year to volunteer overseas with the Australian version of Peace Corps. Having headed overseas with the fairly sanctimonious aim of “making a difference”, I soon realised that it is the perfect springboard to a career in development/NGOs (assuming that you work those connections while you are there). Whilst I still think it is a fantastic thing to do, very few who are truely altruistic (including me).
This blog is not really about what Americans like, there are pleny of upper-middle class lefties in Australia who own/covet a Kitchenaid and are currently working on the scrip for their first short film. The blog is about a socio-economic group that crops up all over the developed world and probably not just in former British colonies.
I always thought I was the whitest man alive, now I know it’s true. I’m taking a year off by volunteering in another country, where I continually promise to learn the language, but never actually study anymore. When asked if I speak the local dialect I reply, gamay lang (just a little). Oh yeah, I just downloaded some old school rap from my friend’s itunes.

I don’t say that as a derogatory because I like about 90% of the list even though I’m a hard fiscal conservative and a social libertarian.

Every white person I know has a huge mass of plastic bags from the grocery store that they just cant seem to throw away…they end up as a giant mess under the kitchen sink or tucked into a giant sock looking apparatus hung on a pantry door. Why the urge to save bags…?

But I will tell you what… working as a divemaster in the Galapagos islands is far better than sitting at a computer and counting out your vacation days. Suturing wounds and giving antibiotics in Uganda is sure better than doling out prescription pain medication in rural Oregon to “legal” drug addicts. And… climbing to top of an 18,000 ft. peak with nothing but an ice ax… is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than paying 100 bucks to ski at some white-ass ski resort.

Guys, I went backpacking across Europe and it was the best experience of my life. The women were amazing and you could almost always find some real food. None of that McDonalds crap. And they are more laidback about drinking. I drink 10 times the amount i’d get busted for on campus.

I’ve found it sounds better if I say that I “Extended Medical School” instead of taking a year off.
I think another that you have forgotten is disability. White men especially love to get on disability, it has a much higher status quo then getting on welfare. At least this way, they can say, “I got hurt at Work one day and so I am on disability. In is not that I don’t want to work, I can’t.” This is infinately cooler than, “I have never worked, been on welfare since the day I was born. It is a family tradition.”

Haha, I love the kids that go off after about 3 months as a freshman because they weren’t having a “positive experience” at the college they obsessed over getting into all through high school (which means they failed Calc 2 and ruined all their awesome vintage t-shirts while trying to do laundry). Then you get irritating facebook messages about how their visa is about to run out in beautiful country X and they’ll HAVE TO spend a week on the beach in beautiful countrty Y.
We use them to a) hold our recycling until we can take that out to the bin and b) as trash bags for small trash cans.

You know the type … listen to indie music, wear black thick-rimmed glasses, think they are widely read cause they read classical fiction and the newyorker, and wear Obama “Hope” shirts. It’s the group of people that think it is beyond the rest of society at being “labelled,” yet they are just as culturally insular and homogeneous as a closed-in religious community.

Non of this would apply to my white friends here in NC who play my idosyncracies off as being Italian. You will need to start a new category that includes guns, pickup trucks, bbq, and Walmart. I can’t stop laughing… this is so true!!!!!!! I am working on my law school application as we speak, “quit my job to find myself” I worked with a whole bunch of people that felt “cultured” because they spent a year back-packing, lol!!! They all went to IVY league schools or small liberal arts colleges, but feel grounded because they go to yoga after work and eat foods they can not pronouce to add to their “culture experiences.” Some people would object that this is not their life, but we all know at least a dozen people that fit the bill!!! SO SO True!!! Right ON!!!

Age 57: Become bored with free time after spending the last two and a half decades working seventy plus hours a week, get another job. But I don’t want to be a doctor anymore. Too much money and responsibility. I think now I’ll open up a liquor store. The economy is bad but people who don’t have jobs, the largest amount of them around since the early 80’s, still need to get drunk right? Hell I will own the store and set up a “wine sample” bar and you know, sample wine with friends all day and write it off as advertising. Hey look, free drunk, daily, just for owning a liquor store. And as a former doctor, I can make the hard sell of why drinking is good for you to those extra healthy nerds. I can even say, “Michael Phelps does it.”

AND you can keep your job if you plan this properly, use the FMLA act to give yourself up to 6 months without worrying about losing your job. On top of it all you are on Xanax, and probably drinking heavily to make sure that you stay plenty “depressed” while wallowing in your own filth watching the same TV show you have already seen when it was new, then the first three or four re-runs, and then you bought the entire DVD collection so you can avoid pesky commercials that remind you that you used to want something more. What was it? Did I take my medicine? Hrmm, not sure, another can’t hurt can it?

While the Mayans probably were the first to discover zero and add it as an integral (haha, math joke) part of their number-system, they didn’t influence the ‘old world’ mathematics at all.
For the ‘old world’, the discover of zero seems to be a complicated affair among the Babylonians, the Indians (real Indians, from India – so I’m not racist, see?), the Greeks and to a lesser extent the Egyptians.

I think the point is that the intelligence level and work required to get a good grade in an average history class is less than it would be to get a good grade in biochemistry. I majored in the sciences, and most of the people in my major considered the humanities courses to be easy A or A-‘s. That’s not to say that any idiot has the potential to become a legitimate history academic…but the typical lazy college student of slightly above-average intelligence can usually skate by with a degree in the humanities, but not in the sciences.
I love how white Americans are blamed for all the problems in the world…and then when they try to use their considerable means and education to help out the people that truly need it they are mocked and criticized by the people who contribute absolutely nothing to society, except maybe writing a funny blog or two. This post is hilarious! It’s so true, however, not necessarily a bad thing. I’m a suburban white chick and I studied abroad in Italy for one semester, but definitely didn’t take any time off! I had scholarships; I was able to go through school, I worked while I was there, blah blah. I definitely share the envy of spoiled kids that get to travel for an entire year on their parents’ money.
On the bright side, however, I noticed that people who have traveled are generally (not always!) more open minded and culturally sensitive. I’m from the South and I know plenty of white 20-somethings who have never traveled and in general they are more closed-minded, racist, and cultural snobs.
I know I talk about Italy way too much, but that’s just because it truly was the best experience of my life! I’m now a Graphic Designer, paying taxes, etc… However, anyone who has the desire and means to travel DEFINITELY SHOULD!! It’s incredible!

It’s just aggravating that the people who have the best intentions are the ones that end being crucified by the people who choose to be part of the problem. If I were living on an island with ten other people, and I had vast resources of food and water while the others were starving and thirsty…would I share or just watch them die? There are well over six billion people living on a rock we call Earth in the middle of nowhere. Just because I don’t see people dying from starvation every day doesn’t mean I don’t know they’re out there. So what I meant by my previous post is that I believe I have the things I do for a reason, though I don’t know what it is. I believe that I was given the opportunities I have been so I could use them for good, and not so I could afford a slightly more expensive house.

i did exactly this. in fact, that might even be me in that photo. i went to a private school. got my degree in business. then i took off and did a “euro trip” for 3 months. i had sex with lots of foreign white girls which was also great since the only thing hotter than a white girl is a foreign white girl. then i came back and worked in white corporate America with a speckle of indians and jews. I lived in a very white and expensive neighborhood which i could afford with my white salary. i got sick of having 2 weeks of vacation and i told my white boss that i’m quitting. since i’m white he told me why quit, just go on sabattical, this way you can keep your white benefits while you are gone. this proved to be a great white idea since i was able to have health care while not working at all. i then went on a 1 year, 30 country tour where i spent lots of my white money into their nonwhite economies making sure my white ass is having an amazing time. and any time some filthy non-white beggar asked me for some of my white money i told him to go fuck himself. once i even kicked one since he wouldn’t get off me. but this is no different than how i behave here in america. except that here i usually throw in get a job, mcdonalds is hiring. since in america, that’s actually an option. even today, with our white recession and our black/white president. but, over in africa and india, i couldn’t really say that since well, there really are no jobs for them. i mean, no hope. their non white economies are pathetic. completely pathetic. their main local industry is white tourism. without us white people. they’re fucked. completely fucked. their only hope is to move to a white country. especially one that’s accepting and will take them like America. wow, damn it feels good to be white AND American.

I think that everyone who is able to should spend a year living abroad. Not because it will make them a more interesting person (although it probably will do that) – but because they will come away with a broadened perspective of the world that will enrich the quality of their lives.

Uh…Singapore is not a 3rd world country, and by proportion there are far fewer poor people there than in America. Also, much much safer in Singapore than in the US. Read a book.
Some of my “facts” above may not be completely true (after doing a little fact checking), however GDP per capita (PPP) is higher in Singapore than in the US. How can a country that is richer per person than the US be part of the third world?

There is also no “rural” areas in Singapore. Think, this is a country with 2 million people crammed into a space smaller than an island. Tell me where the poor region lies! Probably just down the street from where the rich folks live. Even if there is a dedicated “poor neighborhood” it won’t be far from the rest of the country.
Don’t forget, for every kid who is bartering for food, there are at least 10 others who’s living on daddy’s VISA account, while they try to appreciate foreign culture by the means of cheap(er) alcohol. I have seen those kids before. They don’t even try to speak the native language. For them it’s just a year-long party.
When they come home, all they do is to complain about how life back home would be better if only it were like Spain, or France, or Australia, or whatever. They brag about all the places they have seen, but when you ask them how they feel, they stare at you for a few seconds and change subject.
My pa used to tell me, when you travel, you observe how other people do their business and learn from it. This is how you learn. Instead of exploiting this opportunity, these folks make it just like home, which defeats the purpose of taking a year off.

I work with a lot of twenty-somethings who are in their “gap-year” volunteering 20 hours a week (maybe even working a part-time job at a coffee shop) and moving to Portland, Oregon from Minnesota or Ohio.
Because they’re AmeriCorps members, they don’t have to worry about paying their $75,000 in student loans back yet…which works to their advantage.
Putting off adult responsibilities is very important to this particular class of whities.
And while their desire to work with non-profits and seek adventure in the Wild West is admirable…their middle-class, privileged faces all blur together after awhile.

usually people who take a year off are college students who live in dorms or high school students who have just finished their senior year who go away before college. of these two categories there are usually two ways they pay for it.
one: they work for a year (sometimes two) while living at home or in college dorms and save up enough money to take a year off
two: their parents pay for it.
students who are interested in taking a year off usually don’t have an apartment because they clearly aren’t into settling down at the moment or they wouldn’t be taking a year off in the first place and if they do have an apartment they are willing to give it up and find a new place when they get back. The same is true for pets, usually they don’t have them and if they do they’ll stay with parents or a trusted friend.
Older, Post-college folks who take a year off usually have very well paying jobs and don’t have a problem paying for it. it does usually accompany a career change, either that or they’ve saved for it for years.
assuming that these white women aren’t being supported by their parents or some other discriminating body why can’t men do the same kind of “killing time” if they want too? just because society puts more pressure on them to work or what? Most parents aren’t going to support their 25 year old daughter, sure more of them will then their 25 year old son but the number who are going to support any of their kids at that age is very small. like the original poster said, she worked an easy, part-time job and any man could do the same if he wanted too even if their is more pressure on him to work.

unfortunately most people can’t afford to travel, even worse many who can will be like the guy with the $800 backpack but none of this changes the fact that travel and the year off are wonderful things.
my major complaint is with people who feel like you have to be working your entire life in order to be a respectable person, always rushing for the next goal. in most cases this is done for the same reason as the year off is said to be in the article, to make yourself look more interesting or accomplished. the best way to look at it is to say that always working makes you of more value to society because you are giving back more an being more active, but is all that really necessary? take a year off if you can, enjoy it. there is plenty of time for work and life is short.

I spent 3 months overseas with my husbands family in Cairo, Egypt. My husband had to return to Canada to earn a living while I stayed and got the most out of the experience with my three little kids. Major culture shock, but it was the most difficult and rewarding experience of my life. Couldn’t wait to kiss the ground when I arrived back to Canada.
Would never do it again, except maybe as a rich expatriate or as a sheltered bus-touring tourist.
I’m not white, but I really admire people who take a year off. It’s much needed and very cathartic. If you have the means, you should do it! That’s what I admire about most “white people”. In fact, I’m going to quit my job in this economic crisis and do some soul searching.

What, and you don’t think an African American or an Asian American tourist might do the same? There is nothing wrong with a tourist being frugal, and that isn’t a characteristic specific only to white tourists, either.
Most foreign tourist areas can accommodate people with very limited understanding of the native language. A foreigner whose business thrives on tourism doesn’t mind learning a little English if it means he’ll get the customer’s money in the end. That’s the basis of a tourist economy… Why learn a whole new language when there isn’t a real need to? You can vacation comfortably by just knowing a couple common phrases.

I am going to start saving up 1000 dollars, a year, starting my senior year of high school, and using the money to travel around America and Europe for at least eight months. Actually, my Dad grew up on a dairy farm with his two hardworking parents neither of whom finished high school, milked the cows since he was in primary school, got into the Air Force as an apprentice electrician, had to go to Night School to finish senior high, was accepted for officer training, got up at 2 am to fly over the Pacific to look for drug dealers and guys in yachts sinking near Fiji, flew our Prime Minister around, sent good vibes to his pilot friends dropping bombs from F-111s into North Vietnam as he navigated transport planes filled with medical equipment for the South Vietnamese, became a lecturer on submarine warfare, helped manage the entire Air Force budget as a senior officer and now writes books on military history. That’s about fifty years of his life.

I’m actually traveling abroad right now, teaching English in China. However, I may be in China for more than a year and I don’t consider what I’m doing taking a year off.
To some extent, I think this post does hit the mark for a lot of people (and even myself as well). But the more I think about it, I realize–yes, in America we have a lot more opportunities than others. Why should we take a year off and need to escape?
But taking a year off isn’t about escaping the real world (at least not for me). This *is* the real world. After all, the world is a big place and everything is on a global scale. Moreso, if I have the opportunity to travel, I’m going to take it. I want to see the world and understand the place we’re living in. It truly does expand your perspective and this experience has changed my life.
So it may be a trend for some, but like everything else, it’s what you make of it. If you think about things critically and try to experience as much as you can, it’s a very rewarding thing to do.

They mostly live coastally, but can be found in most area of the country to some extent. They are college educated and do not perform manual labor. Why aren’t there any TV shows that have the upper middle class liberal white population as is subjects. It seems to only be middle class (all of the above shows) or upper-class (gossip girl, arrested development). I guess we have Frasier. but come on….Frasier?

I seriously thought about going to China to teach English but decided it’s not safe right now.
This is hilarious to me because I am currently taking some time off before starting grad school and have considered going abroad. What’s funniest though is that daily, I come in contact with white people who have the very same stories.

I’m in Djibouti right now and traveled to Ethiopia and Kenya on several occasions. In all places there are prices for locals (VERY cheap) prices for foreigners (cheap to moderate price) and prices for Americans (VERY EXPENSIVE). From talking and living close to local people I have found that there is a prevalent, over exaggerated view of average American wealth. I MEAN EXAGGERATED. THIS IS UNIVERSAL. I’ll need some everyday item like a bowl or a couple cans of milk and they start the bidding at anywhere from 500 to 1000% over its worth!!
So, no, I don’t feel bad at all spending an exasperating amount of time haggling with them to get somewhere between local and foreigner price.
Your American pocket is the way to “get something over” on the world and a country that’s know known by viral social memes , piped in snippets of E! Entertainment and Yo MTV Cribs, and an aggressive unpopular foreign policy.
Not everyone that travels is filthy rich. Many save for years and sacrifice a lot to become more worldly and enlightened, much afar from the “Fat assed, myopic,rat haired, burger chomping American pig” so despised. And in the end I’ve found that vendors i go to end up respecting me more after putting up a stiff haggle and even we even joke around a bit when they gouge some gullible tourist that stops at their

I spent a year traveling, after college. Mostly Southeast Asia. And yes, my parents paid for it. Still, it was pretty cheap – you can live in a Southeast Asian country for a month for a few hundred dollars (including food, lodging, and transportation). Cheaper than a year at most universities anyway, and far more educational. And believe it or not, lots of people are interested in my stories, not just other “white people”.

Actually, it is only in the US that people are so unable to travel and get ANY glimpse of other cultures that they are forced to spend an ENTIRE year “out of it” to “enlighten” themselves at least a tee-bit. And also, it is only in this country out of the others considered equally “civilized” that you have to be a “white spoiled brat” to afford some kind of cultural education or enlightenment. There are Government grants that give people the money to teach/work abroad. I taught English last year in Spain and you get a monthly salary…from there I paid for everything on my own and was able to travel because I budgeted so well. Europe is definitely affordable (i.e. hostels, great cheap restaurants) so you don’t have to be rich at all because I’m far from it : )
I definitely agree with this. I studied abroad in Spain in ’05 and work there for a year last year teaching English and it was definitely a different experience. I’d say 75% of the kids I studied abroad with had tons of money and didn’t learn any Spanish nor about the culture. I guess I lucked out because some of my best friends til this day are Spaniards : )

I usually avoid those people. Some live in a fantasy world where they think somehow they can just “make it” in life by taking long breaks or being flighty.
Suddenly older age hits them and they realize they never built up their lives enough and thus when they need a job they’re stuck competing with younger, more educated people because people their age are up higher on the ladder.
I agree with taking a year off if you have the capital, lost your job, or quit it to figure out your life. If you feel unhappy in the path you’re on and need to rethink things. I don’t agree however with taking time off just because you finished high school or college. Seen enough cases where you end up more being a shlump at home wanting to not let go of being a kid. Where you want to avoid adulthood and the 9-to-5 life that comes with it.
One needs to be realistic in the world and bear in mind that even if you happen to be one of those lucky ones who can drop out for a while and suddenly come back into a great paycheck and such…your luck might run out. Take a year off if you want to make a big change in your life, not because you feel you need time off and want to be lazy.
The goal in life is to have HARMONY…BALANCE. To have a happy level in both career and personal pleasure.

I’ve met so many people like that. They seem to be people with the least responsibilities in life, i.e. feeding the rest of the family, paying mortgage and loans. The most interesting stories seem to be when they outdrink a fellow white guy on a trip in a sleazy Asian bar.
however, those who took a year off seem to enjoy it and gain a lot of insight about what they want to do with their life after their trip.
Classically told – as this tends to apply to a particular type of middle class leftist. I took a year out but to study a language – which is becoming the new white thing to do in Sth America. I loved Sth America and now go there with my work a few months of each year. Your comment on haggling over $2 plate of food struck a chord – hmmm just what would happen if we cared that we paid a bit more – lets take the ultimate South American white location of enlightenment – Cusco in Peru. They have adopted a three tier pricing system with white prices being 3 times the amount – that’s ok – until you see people choosing a white customer over a local because they get three times the money for the same service/product. Look around the main square in Cusco and let me see how many locals you see dining – likely due to the fact that you are being charged three times the amount and locals just cant afford to go here anymore. And the best is seeing children beg as middle class whites are more likely to feel sorry for them and give them money – so not only do the locals work since the age of 3 they are not welcome into just any place and then pat the backs of the Inca trailers while carrying their bags for the entire trek – thanks again to the middle class whities – who cares about other people in the world – it is all about me.
But aren’t these restaurants owned and run by “locals”? Doesn’t tourism bring in much needed income to the local economy and won’t this lift the standard of living for the local people? Better whitie should live them alone to their poor but “pure” lifestyles?

A lot of people now are unemployed; many of them for more than a year. If they can afford the travel expenses they would benefit greatly by traveling for a year. It doesn’t have to be overseas; just get out of whatever town you happen to live in and live elsewhere for a year. This notion that people should work all their lives is foolish. Work only enough in order to make enough money to play and enjoy life as you see fit. You don’t owe society anything other than to avoid committing crimes. Working less is not a crime. The simple, well-traveled life is the best!! Bon voyage!!!!

Why is the poverty rate still around 60% if the so called much needed income was reaching where it is needed most? I agree that in the market we live in this may happen – but the structure of government is slightly different in other countries….so funds tend to get dispersed differently.

I posted this before. When I was in south east Asia, I saw a german tourist carrying a very expensive camera and haggling $0.50 worth of fruit from a poor street vendor.
This poor lady probably earn less than $2/day. I bought fruit from the same woman and paid her double.
That german tourist probably spent all his money on booz, drugs and shemale hookers.
If I do have a son someday, I will make him live in a monastery for 10 weeks. Nothing toughens you up than raising livestock, farming vegetables, butchering your own food, cooking for 30 old monks, sleeping in a cot, making wine, no electronics and praying for thanks for living another day.

This blog is great, I have traveled abroad spent some time in West Africa. I saved up for a while and it was well worth it to. This blog really is for white people, because I could never consider taking off a whole year.
I grew up and still live in a ski resort. So on behalf of the long-term White residents of ski resorts everywhere I would like to thank SWPL for hitting the nail right on the head. Maybe you should have spent an extra year in school to either 1. learn what capital letters are and how to use them in English class or 2. Maybe I’m just in denial about my whiteness. But this site seems more like “stuff hipsters like” or “stuff boring upper middle class americans like in college”. White People are as diverse as the other races. Boring people trying to look interesting are not exclusively white, although they are predominantly so in this country.
It is certainly an accomplishment. Cities that have survived Mongol invasions and Japanese air raids won’t survive white people. Go to Southwest China, Thailand, Nepal, or any of these other regions on the backpacker circuit, and you’ll see more than Buddhist monastaries.

I was very excited when I was reading this list b/c I thought, huh- I’m not all that white. Until I got to this one. I am one week from starting my senior year of college…after taking a year off. You’re right. Those three years of college were stressful and I ‘deserved’ a break. I am now excepting the fact that I am indeed white-however I think I may need a few years of therapy (another white thing I’m sure) to completely grasp my whiteness.

I agree with this. If this is supposed to be strictly satire then it has not been successful in its goal — hence all the comments. I just see anger and resentment all over this page. Also, how unfortunate that “white person” has such a negative connotation. I agree with what Kat said. This website should be called “what pretentious douchebags like” instead of categorizing an entire race of people as pretentious douchebags — which is what it is doing even if that was not the original intention. People can make excuses all they want “well… it really just means this percent of the population” but it is what it is and it isn’t helping.
My friend is white, was middle class but is now dirt-poor (thanks to medical bills), lost both parents and has absolutely no financial support, and is struggling to find a way to get into a college. This friend plans to take “a year off” working on a farm in a foreign country in order to gain a new perspective on life and earn some money. Over 10 percent of the working-age US population is taking an involuntary absence of work, double (18%) that in the Palm Springs area, a quarter of everyone in Indio (nearing 24%) and a third (35%) in the farming Imperial valley alone. Good times huh? Riverside County, Cal. may be the fastest growing county in the state, but the job market is empty or void of any good paying jobs at the moment.
The city of Indio was the “hub of the valley” in the chamber of commerce radio song campaign, the sunbelt resort town and abit of the Midwest appealed to people moving here in droves from the 1970’s until recently. I do know racial problems, class disparity and corrupted politics harmed a city with a population nearing the 100,000 mark (more than Palm Springs), mostly Hispanic and came from Mexico.
I seen most of the local retailer chain stores are gone: Sears, Harris/Gottschalks, Ralph’s, JcPenney’s, Cornet, Gemco/Target, Lucky’s, Pic ‘n’ Save, Super saver, Savon, Longs drugs, Ross and Marshalls. We have a K-mart (dead), 2 home Depots (bankrupt), Costco (gonna close) and a wal-mart (the only one alive). Downtown Indio is an empty shell, the business strips seem to ring out “ghetto” and our mall is compared to a 3rd world border crossing. +
I walked by the three-times-empty store (first a Thrifty’s, then a Factory-2-U store and a Cardenas Mexican market) to be reminded of a former Soviet-era shop of partially hanging signs, broken windows (boarded up) and trash bags or debris just lay there inside. This is my hometown Indio being 80 miles from Mexico, 120 miles from L.A. and 30 miles from Palm Springs: but why did we grow by 90,000 since my parents moved here 30 some years ago? Sou. I’m neither american nor european, but don’t think that it takes to be a traveling-white-person to complain about tourists. I’ve never taken some time off, but still, don’t see what’s wrong with it. I believe it takes courage to leave the place you lived your life and to take a step to try and learn different cultures. and plus, is there a rule saying you can’t use technology(laptop, etc.) while traveling. You choose the way you experience things. It’s better than staying at home and living totally ignorant to what’s really going on in the world. (not that all people staying home are ignorant) I believe that it, at least, gives you some perspective, leaving all stereotypes back at home, on TVs..
Like I said, I don’t travel to other countries, and don’t take some time(a year or two, whatever it is) off, because I can’t. (or just don’t want to) but if some people have the opportunity to do so, why can’t they? I like people traveling to my country to live here for a year or so, more than tourists. because all they do is taking pictures of the most famous monuments and saying “wow, that’s cool/exotic/etc.. man!”

I think blogs like this just spark more divide among what you call “races.” People are people and wherever your history is from does not have to dictate what you “like” and “not like”. I like a lot of the things in this blog and I know you would not call me a “white person”. A couple of my black friends also like a lot of this stuff. You realize that “White People” is really a euphemism for hipsters, not the entire white race.
Sometimes people take a year off without having lots of money. I’m taking a year off right now, working as an au pair, so I just make enough money to get by while I’m here. A volunteer position would be great, and that’s what I originally wanted to do, but the truth is that you have to have lots of money to do that. You don’t get paid, and the volunteer programs cost a ton.

What about the people who have legitimately traumatic experiences? In one year: My cousin passed away, I was raped by an old friend who took advantage of me in my grieving, and when I told my current boyfriend what happened, he dumped me. Two months later, I experienced a physically excruciating spontaneous abortion. And then I got sent into foster care for nine months for being depressed and anti-social.
Over the course of one year, I went from being a straight-A student to being a serial high-school dropout. I have been unable to seriously dedicate myself to any task put in front of me for more than a few months at at time before breaking down; 3+ years later, I’m still not finished. This can be attributed to a condition known as anomie, which I experience in conjunction with depression and frequent anxiety attacks.
I recognize the ironic value in criticizing the things all of us, likely yourself included, do on a regular basis, but you just can’t slap a label on any group of people as a whole. Life doesn’t work like that. Go figure.

Che is a white Latino, markedly different than “white” in the sense as we know and use it. Although, in his birthplace of Argentina, he would – and probably is – considered white as we know it. In the U.S., revolutionary aspirations aside, he probably would not be socially or politically grouped with whites. Maybe if he kept his mouth shut for his entire stay in the US he would be viewed as white. Realistically, he would probably feel ostracized if he clung to a view that he was white.
So it’s a curious move in your labeling him as “white.” I’m tyring to figure out how you’re using that label.
The Che example illustrates the conundrum and the futility of this social/political construct of race classification. It’s nearly impossible to scientifically categorize the numerous variations of groups that are actually more similar than different. It has only been used as a divisive tool over the years and remains a social issue due to our own doing.
Hence we have a site that is reduced to using self-centered behaviors as a means of defining and categorizing people with light pigment.

I think the article has a lot of truth to, more and more people are taking a ‘gap year’ and yes, will end up in the same places doing similar things. Who is to say this isn’t a worthwhile experience, just because thousands have done it before you and surely thousands will after you, it doesn’t mean there is not anything to gain for the individual by opening their horizons and going somewhere different. Just remember not everyone will be as enthusiasic as you because lets be honest once you’ve heard about ones persons trip to France/Thailand etc you don’t particularly want to hear a hundred other similar sounding story.
I can’t believe some of the comments on here, saying where do all these kids in their early 20’s have all this money to laze about. Surely this is the best time/opportunity to see somewhere different. No house/morgage, kids, other commitments. What is worse, staying the same town/city for your whole working life, meeting the same people/doing the same things or saving up a bit of cash and seeing a bit of the world before you start your working life. Sure some people do it on daddys credit card, probably not the best way to get independance or respect but you wont stop rich parents giving their kids money! Just remember people we have our whole lives to work, who wants to die with regrets of doing/seeing something they no longer can.

This is a very mixed neighbourhood, and people who don’t have paid work do volunteer work in the community. People like him are shunned.

It really depends on the household you grew up in. If it is people who have next to nothing, forget about it. If it is in a house, that only needs tax payment..then it is bound to occur.
Speaking of taking a year off. Again. People get jobs ( like teachers ) where they can take a leave of absence after working long enough ( with full pay ).
I just talked to a guy from the east who graduated from college in may of 08 who is taking time off and has been living in west coast for the last year. No job just trying to “figure things out”. His lease ends in Jan and he is thinking about moving to CO or Australia. He said that he probably will not go to Australia “because getting a work visa is too much work.” What he is actually saying is the Aussies have no tolerance for people like him.

possible, but it would likely depend on who made the jokes. For example, Chris Rock regularly does “stuff black people like” variety sketches in his comedy routines. Making fun of one’s own heritage (stereotypical or otherwise) or being an equal opportunity basher usually gives one immunity.
Lol, I guess I fit the cliche, except that this isn’t a year off for me, I chose to study in England for a year. In a bid to sound like an interesting white person, this year has involved travel to European locals (Italy, Spain, France, Belguim, Ireland, and Scotland, sadly Amsterdam has been missed), lots of crazy English parties, filled even more crazy English dudes (again I am taking a hiatus from the reality of boy friends and enjoying all that foreign one night stands can offer). I find it funny that I did what all white people like to do, travel. Although to be even more interesting, I plan on doing one of the following next summer: Road trip through North America, volunteering in India, or Working in Europe. I’l probably pick the one thats the best resume pad for the future.

I laugh… Most Asians who immigrate are split into two categories: Those who grew up dirt poor and are “lucky” to come here to the States. And B) those who grew up and have never worked a second in their lives. I am the latter kind. And while you may find is despicable that I have no vocational training of any kind, I’m merely here to inform you that year off you took, most Asians in the second category grew up having BY DEFAULT; namely, “travelling the world.” Therefore, your assumptions about how that year off made your life so fulfilling, could very well be what the people at your workplace have already achieved long time ago and are jaded by. It’s funny… Really. I’ve had all my life “off.”

I both love and hate this site… It has some humorous observations about white people. As a white person, I love that. But, I also find the tone to be a bit denigrating sometimes. In Canada, about half my friends are Asian (either CBCs or new immigrants), and I’ve now lived in Taiwan for 3 years – so I’ve had lots of opportunity to share differing perspectives between Asians and Caucasians. Sadly, I’ve also found that the people that hate white people the most seem to be ABCs…whereas my CBC friends never seemed to feel that way. Does anyone have an opinion on this statement? Are there strong issues between whites and asians in the States?

After reading the last comment, you should add an entry for What White People Like: The “What White People Like” Blog.
White people (the comment above as an example) like reading “What White People Like” because it reaffirms their uniqueness if they can identify specific distinctions between their styles and tastes and those who are “posers”. If white people are identified as liking the Toyota Prius and they drive a Volkswagon Jetta TDI they can laugh at the conformity of “other” white people, and thus confirm the specialness of their experiences and anti-conformist values.
They additionally can use the “What White People Like” blog to identify upcoming trends so they can quickly find new ones and not be caught liking something after it is no longer acceptable. This is very similar to the reason for #71 (Being the only white person around).
I luckily never promised to go back to school. The worst is the f**kers that write a book about their year off and actually get it published. and white people actually BUY them! then they get credit and become the cat’s meow when they get back to college. Well, I do not pretend to know the answer but I would like to contribute my opinion. I am Asian and know different kinds of Asians with various views on Caucasians. Not all ABCs or second generations hate whites but there is some truth to that statement. I believe feelings for or against a group of people stem from different kinds of experiences. For example, when I was new in the US, I didn’t know much about the complicated social structure and race conflicts here. While it’s not easy to be a foreigner, there is an advantage for being naive. For example when I got teased based on race, nationality or culture, I was able to brush it of to a certain extent, thinking ‘Well, this is part of being a foreigner with limited language skills.’ (I think people feel freer to tease when the person is more “silent”) But when I got older, linguistically competent and more influenced by the race relations in the US, the jokes could not be viewed as an expression of curiosity anymore. For second generations it must be even harder because they are a hybrid of culture but are only viewed as Asian and thereby “foreign” even if born and raised here. This is just an example, but the main point is, as a foreigner, temporary visitor or new-comer, the social tension is not as visible or somehow excused. However, as a minority who is at home but treated like a foreigner and often not as socially empowered as whites, would feel aversions to the ones with a sense of full ownership to the society they belong to.

This stuff is right on. I’m mid-twenties and reading this while in Ecuador because I’m here teaching English and working towards a Peace Corps assignment next year. Nailed me! hahaha… Of course my motives are not to be more interesting and I’m certainly not planning on writing a book but it’s completely true that white people love to get away for extended periods of time and someone like me has to laugh at this.
I think to say taking a year off is such an understatement. White people, mostly white women, take off their entire careers. White men are much better as some actually try to learn their profession and work their way up the corporate ladder. However, white women use their acting skills and display some sign of stress to make it seem like they’re working. They walk around the office loudly with high heels and papers in their hand and seem to be in a rush. They do this in about one hour increments and usually walk back and forth past the boss’ office. But in reality, they are just going to the restroom. Then they call their friends and pretend like their on a business call. White women also love to setup meetings and conference calls. This allows them to sit in a conference room and look important and kiss the boss’ ass without having to do any real work. They also get to tell their friends about the long meeting they had and how tired they are from work. Then if they really have a slow day and need a reason to justify for the lack of work, they simply complain that their computer is slow and call the IT guy for help. Once the IT guy arrives, white women make it a mission to talk as loud as possible so the boss hears. They would say things like “I’m trying to finish this project before the deadline, but this stupid computer isn’t working!!” But what they’re really saying is “Fix this non-existent problem, so I can get back to surfing the web” White women also befriends other white women in the company so they can complain about how difficult their jobs are and how they need a vacation. They also become friends with minorities since they are the ones that do the actual work. White women need their insight into how the job is done, so they can claim credit and get the promotion. They will try to befriend an asian first since they are accustomed to copying test answers from them during math and science exams during elementary school years. However, if an asian is not available, they will become pals with a black person. This way if something goes wrong, the blame is shared or maybe even passed onto the other person. The boss is less likely to yell or fire a black person due to threat of racial discrimination.
This is so true but what i don’t understand is why some of the people that have commented feel so negatively towards this. Was it the way the article was written? Does the article lead you in a way to make you believe that taking a year off is a really bad thing to do? Are you jealous? Why? I took a year off after school and then in my late 20’s have taken 13 years to teach in underprivileged countries. I am not ashamed of this and I’m not going to write a book about it.

Wow, this blog feels like sour grapes to me. If someone makes a decision to travel abroad, and take measures to make their trip as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, then I would say that that’s probably a proactive step towards a worthwhile experience.
And just because someone is white and traveling abroad doesn’t mean that they are a trust-fund case. I’m about to take a six month journey through the Keys, and Costa Rica, Peru. I’m quitting a thankless job I’ve worked for five years and I’m financing the trip myself. I’m not sure if I can relate to the details of this blog at all. I may take some pictures and write my thoughts about the journey down…but these activites go hand-in-hand with traveling.
Maybe white people just travel more because they have their shit together enough to make it possible. Or maybe the author of this myopic blog just wants to use traveling as a means to spill out some angst about not having this opportunity in his/her own life? Either way, it’s a bunch of BS.

Your post seemed right-on regarding not only traveling “white”, but also PEOPLE OF OTHER RACES, that I know who have had the luxury to “take a year off to travel”. Unfortunately, many of us do not have this opportunity due to financial and other responsibilities of life — nor a crash-pad or other housing to return to after the traveling ends.
A possible addition to your post: Mention how these “world-traveled” individuals (WHITE and OTHER) can be a somewhat elitist group, often looking-down upon those who have not had the same advantage. And… An irony is that these people may have toured the world, but often not even their own country of habitation; such as many people of USA.
I also agree with your observation that these globetrotters wearing $800 backpacks, and perhaps carrying $400 cameras, $300 ipod, wearing $80 jeans, etc.., can be found squabbling with foreign “locals” over a $2 meal, $3 handmade and dyed article of clothing, or $5 lodging — that has been an advantage of USA dollar -vs- other currencies. But this is changing, and one can now see “foreign tourists”, young and old, visiting the USA and going wild over our seemingly “low prices” (due to falling exchange-rate of USA dollar) — prices for basic goods and services which many living here in USA can no longer afford due to economic bust and job losses. So for many here, just “surviving” is a daily struggle — and “taking a year off to travel” is beyond our scope of reality.

I was answering a post from someone else who made an idiotic remark about Europeans, you would know this if instead of just looking for a post to bash on and landing on mine, you would’ve paid attention to the fact that it says “Reply on post….”
Maybe I did only need one stereotype and they weren’t meant to offend anybody (which I obviously failed at, lol), just trying to prove a point. Besides, stereotypes are only offensive and hurtful when you let them be (I should know seeing as I belong to some of the ones I used as an example) and people who do take offense in them are often ashamed of themselves even if they pretend they are not. Because, really, why would you be offended by something that is obviously NOT true (again, generalizations are bad!) and is being used against you by some ignorant a-hole (I figured it would be less offensive if I didn’t spell out THIS word).
Oh yeah, by the way, the post isn’t about rich people, some of which live in Europe… its about white people who think that to be cool and interesting they need to go on spiritual enlightenment trips or whatever they want to call it.

and had this blog been about an Indian, or a black person…it would have been appalling, offensive, and down right wrong…now THATS whats funny.
I hate my job and want to jump out the window. Well, first I wanna throw my desk/computer/boss/coworkers out of it, but then I might change my mind. Death to the cubicle bullshit-laden-horseshit. Gah, I wanna take a year off!!!!
Some of the more enterprising white people will extend their time off by working abroad as a bartender, ski lift operator, or english teacher. Their stories, emails, and publishing plans will be identical to the previous white person but will include additional stories about working and complaints about “tourists.”
If you work with this person, be sure to give them a FAKE email address on their last day on the job or you will be inundated with emails about spiritual enlightenment and how great the food is compared to similar restaurants back home. Also, within the first five days following departure, this person will come up with the idea to write a book about their travel experience. Sadly, more books about mid-twenties white people traveling have been written than have been read.

Just graduated from college and wanting to take a break before grad school but not wanting to continue my with the office job I did over the summer I just accepted a placement with Americorps and justified the decision with the idea that it will look great on my resume and allow me to grow as a person. The thought of taking a year off sounds nice; however, I am easily bored if not kept busy. After a week off of work I’m bored out of my mind. I do everything I want to do and that’s it, I’m ready to get back to work. Of course, I do love my job, too, so it is hard to stay away for too long.

Hmm… interesting. I’m latina too. Yet I took a gap year, am in my first year of college and already thinking another gap year for my sophmore year. I think maybe it’s better to have those long vacations now AND later? either way, there are tons of opportunities out there to not have to wait so long. i would recommend looking into them (a lot of them have financial aid if you need it).
on a general note though, it’s hard to go on a gap year and not talk about it because well it is an entire year of your life.
Thats the thing with Americans- when they go abroad they like to box tick and do it for the wrong reasons.
It must be rubbish to be in a country so far away from any other good places. I go to a new country every month, because I can get £6 return Ryanair flights, get lashed and dont need the pretence of it, but we don’t feel better or anything than other people, which is why Americans go abroad.
How can you have a life changing trip by going to Europe as Americans. None speak a language well enough to converse meaningfuly with people, look ridiculous, have stupid accents and get laughed at by locals and genuine other travellers for their massive stupidity.

I’m in the process of taking a year off, I totally agree with this stereotype except that I’m not doing it to become more ineresting to others, I am tired of working after 15 years and need a break! Just found your website. That was 44 years after I took a year off. My wife and I and son of 5 took off and traveled the US. We weren’t searching or running. Just wanted the experience. Nothing like a long-wheel based van, the open road and a living room called the great out of doors. Try it, you’ll like it.
Only liberals take a year off. Conservatives can’t afford to, as we’re too busy working at jobs we really don’t like but do so to keep a roof over our heads.
This is funny, as though I fit within some of these stereotypes. I must say, teaching English is NOT taking time off. It also is a job for people who cannot find adequate jobs in America, or any other country that applies. I’ve been teaching in Korea for two years, and while there is a fun element to it, it’s no vacation – it’s hard work!

Hmm… well I’m a liberal and I have never taken a year off, never been abroad, and I use my vacation time to take care of my kids when they get sick. Traveling sounds nice but I wouldn’t give up my job or my house for it and I certainly wouldn’t uproot my kids to strike out on some romantic idea of seeing the world. If I won the lottery- sure we’d go. However I really don’t think this falls under the liberal vs conservative standard- it’s strictly based what responsibilities a person has, their ecconomic means and their willingness to give up everything they’ve earned thus far.
C’mon man… get serious. There is nothing “hard” or “work” like in teaching abroad. It is definitely not “hard work”. Otherwise twenty somethings wouldn’t always be trying to do it again after they find what actual hard work is like… unless they work for the government or something. Totally agree!!! Life is an adventure, you dont get an adventure if you sit at home your whole life looking for things to buy or bills to pay. You have to extend yourself, and this can mean taking yourself out of your confort zone, liek travelling to another country!

Even if you can’t take a year off, you can still enjoy a lot in 3 months, a month or even one week.

I think volunteering for the Peace Corps (European backpackers are pussies compared to PC returnees), being a mentor to a kid in a low socioeconomic home in rural and urban America, taking an internship that involves speaking to residents in a Southern ghetto, and studying not only ones parents’ native tongue, but also another language due its popular heritage your city has kinda makes taking a “year off” a bit of waste. Actually, it’s an entirely a waste because you do jack shit – I mean, you “expand” and “find yourself.”

I think when approached right, taking a year off can lead to life-altering experiences. If you’re constantly seeking out opportunities, you just may find what you really should be doing. Or something better than what you’re doing now.
