If you ask white people what they love about cities they don’t live in, they will say “restaurants,” “culture,” and “architecture.”
They just can’t get enough of old buildings or ultramodern buildings next to old buildings.
If you want to fit in with white people you need to learn about IM Pei, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry, and a whole swath of others. Also, be prepared to say “Bauhaus” a lot.
Once you have the basics down, you should choose a city that people are unlikely to have visited, then make up a name, and choose one of the following a) opera house, b) museum, c) city hall, d) civic center. Then put all together into something like this:
“Geary is good, but I’m more much into the work of D.F. Winterhausen, he designed the new opera house in Podgorica.” Wait for a pause and then say “In Montenegro. Have you never been?”
The white person will be left in stunned silence, reverence and respect.
The reason white people love architecture so much is that deep down they believe that they could have been a great architect. They feel the same way about other professions including: professor, writer, and politician.
Also of note, white people love big books about architecture. So if you need to get one a gift, this always goes over well because it makes them feel smart without having to read too much.
If you come up with a name as bogus as “D.F. Winterhausen” you will be detected (There just aren’t that many players in the world of architecture).
Suggestion: White people wet their pants over Rem Koolhaas! Just say his name and white people will hump your leg.
Koolhaas is a safe bet to impress the white folk.
Even safer, Renzo Piano and art museums. What art museum has he not designed?
i agree, drop rem koolhaas’s name and then daniel liebikind, just to be sure the white people around you know that you are cultured.
Point to ponder: Will mentioning Podgorica impress more if you pronounce it correctly or incorrectly?
Is it more likely your target has seen the name in the NY Times but never heard it said aloud, or has heard it on NPR but doesn’t realize how it’s spelled.
When you talk about Renzo Piano, be sure to note that the translucent roof filters the light exactly 12 times (wtf?!!?).
Then pretend like everyone has the ocular refinement to a) detect such an arcane conceit, and b) know the difference between 11 filters (The flesh in that portrait seems a bit pallid. Hey this roof isn’t filtering the light 12 times!!) and 13 (That’s just gauche).
12 is just right.
The EMP is so ugly
Suggestion: Dropping the Rem Koolhaus name is fine, but if you really want to impress the white folk, mention his protege Joshua Prince-Ramus. White women in particular love him. He’s young, good looking and muscular on top of all the culture. Also you sound chic when you mention someone with ‘Prince’ in their name.
And Joshua Prince-Ramus is a massive douchebag. Completely lost in his own self-regard.

don’t you dare call me a racist!!!
Jake, you are just jealous of Prince-Ramus. You are the typical frustrated architect who envies other designer’s success.
I’m white and I would be disappointed if every building was a plain cube of gray bricks. I’m not aligned with this blog’s fashion tastes in this respect. Therefore I’m lame.
Jane, you obviously dream of screwing Joshua Prince Ramus, and haven’t seen this video:
….or even worse, you have seen the video and still think he’s dreamy!
I work at an architecture firm, where 95% of the employees are white.
It’s true about Rem Koolhaas — I’m white and I have several books by or about him on my vintage bookshelf! But what about Shigeru Ban? He’s Japanese, he uses recycled materials, and he cares about poor people! I’m surprised more white people haven’t heard of him.
White architects not only love architecture….they are big supporters of mass transit. For the rest of us, not them.
Even when they visit a big city like Washington, DC…they have to take a cab. Heaven forbid they have to walk a block or two, read a metro map, and wait on the platform for the train to arrive. Too much for them to handle.
well architecture was born as a discipline in white countries and has long been considered allied to arts and philosophy and people being cool.
telling people you’re an architect in asia and you won’t generate the same air of artsy mystique, you’ll just be the dirtbag who draws buildings… which is in fact what you do back home.
Look at a Frank Gehry building an tell me it’s not spectacular. I dare you. It’s impossible.
Now I feel bad. I was doing pretty well in my self-righeous need to not be picked on by this website, but I do enjoy big books on architecture. I feel like such a sellout.
RE: Gehry
When I was in grad school at the U of Minnesota, a fellow grad student who focused on Scandinavian Studies rented a basement from a architecture professor. (I have now established my white cred.) One day the prof asked her what she thought of the Gehry art museum going up on campus. She replied, “I guess it’ll be ok once they cover up that aluminum.”
Major faux pas!
by the way Annonymous is a real turd dropper and spammer. The blog is not about white people per se, rather an expose’ of the trival and banal crap that people put importance to. It’s about class in a way, the class we are all thought to aspire to be a member of – comfortable, secure, educated, modern and open minded. White is just shorthand for those that have actually attained it.
Gehry’s metal shavings are truly a vomit inducing scar on any cityscape. Okay so it worked for Bilbao, but all the copycat commissions of like buildings are the result of a profound lack of vision and imagination on the part of our so called leaders. And of course this failing extends into almost all areas of life influenced by them.
This is funny stuff. I am white and know a lot of white people like this.
It’s crazy to me though that Anonymous is so upset over this. Just take it for what it is, funny.
Anonymous is offended, but is probably one of the people that won’t correct someone that uses racial slurs or terminology and uses the “I have a lot of black friends” card, if someone calls them a racist.
Too true, too true.
I live in Seattle where Gehry’s creation (the Experience Music Project…thanks Paul Allen) is such a blight that the superlative of bad architecture here is referred to as “EMP Ugly”.
…or maybe you should just talk to people about architecture if you actually know something about it!! nothing would piss me off more than if i thought i was about to have an intellectual conversation about my true love of structure and design, and the built environment, to find out that some asshole can only tell me that frank gehry has big aluminum “metal shavings” for buildings.
oh and ‘Pastor Magoo,’ it’s daniel LIEBESKIND, so i can tell that YOU are not cultured!

i love architecture, i guess that makes me OH so white
ps… it’s not ‘bad’ architecture if it still has you thinking about it! 😉
I saw myself–so scary, however, I like architecture because it’s something I can’t even fathom doing! I can’t draw, the complex math it takes to be an architect is probably beyond me and I just think it’s pretty to make dwellings nice. I like home architecture more than random buildings. I don’t know names and don’t think I can retain them. I don’t know why I’m being defensive except to say I have a latin background?
I’m a “white”architect, and sick to death of people saying they wish they had studied architecture. 90% of my fellow architects have their heads too far up their own asses to see anything else. Try to talk to me about architecture, and I am likely to puke on you.
Does loving Victorian-era domestic architecture make me pedestrian?
As an architect I would offer my recommendation for a “big books about architecture” – “10×10,” it’s the ultimate snobby big coffee table architecture book. Pretty much anything else from Taschen works too.
And I get SO SICK of having people tell me they wish they had become an architect.
White people will love this one: say you dream of one day hiring Bohlin Cywinski Jackson to design your home. After all, they design the Apple stores and Bill Gate’s house.
Can anybody name a famous black architect ?
#28 David Adjaye. Google it.
I am an architect and work in a large firm. Most of the people there, and many american businesses now days,
are full of cheap immigrant labor (SOME ARE EVEN SMART) who get here because THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY DAMN STUPID AMERICANS NOW. THEY GET HERE ON WORK VISAS THAT CLAIM THEY HAVE SPECIAL SKILLS THAT NO ELSE HERE HAS, OR THAT IS IN SHORT SUPPLY. I USED TO THINK IT WAS ALL B.S.; BUT AFTER READING THE BLUBBERING ON THESE ‘BLOGS’, IT IS CLEAR THAT I COULD BE WRONG, VERY WRONG.
word, word, word.
“I don’t want to be an architect but I am”
im in the same boat, and im a lady
so every conversation with a guy starts with
“i always wanted to be an architect, but…(insert banal reason here)….”
i think that is the sole reason i had to move away from san francisco (every guy in that city wants to be an architect)
and frank gehry might be a better architect if he stopped sketching fish and putting crap on them and calling them buildings.
word, word, word.

Wow, no one mentioned Gaudi?
I live in Barcelona… how many white-points do I get for this simple post?
BTW, I am not white.
“Once you have the basics down, you should choose a city that people are unlikely to have visited, then make up a name, and choose one of the following a) opera house, b) museum, c) city hall, d) civic center. ”
That is absolutely hysterical. I need to do that more often.
Ah, typical. No love for the lowly landscape architect–which you could call Civil Engineers with taste, I guess.
Oh yeah…who created the framework for urban and national parks? Right…landscape architects! (look up “Organic Act of 1916” among other things)
The first thing the WTC memorial committee did when an architecture grad student won the design competition was make him team with a Landscape architect…I think it was Peter Walker.
But usually we’re brought in too late to make an ugly building look good.
Though I think this a funny post, it isn’t white people. This is like elitist art students or as I said before, elitist, upper class, pretentious white americans. You hang out with some annoying people
I am personally offended by this site. If I made a stereotypical site about what black people, hispanic people or asian people like, I would be dubbed as a racist. Perhaps this was all in good jest, but until other races can take what they dole out, I will remain offended. I am tired of a double standard when it comes to that issue. There are many white people, actually the majority of them, that don’t know anything about IM Pei and they certainly couldn’t tell you much about architecture. You’re looking at one specific section of one race and using it to stereotype the rest of the race, which I find completely idiotic. This entire site is pointless.
Ryan, dude, it’s a joke. It’s not really meant to be about all caucasions. It’s about educated, liberal Americans and what they sometimes take too seriously. Calling them “white people” is just funnier. And I Guess I’m a White Girl, way to propogate that canon! I bet there’s a faculty position at some architecture school for you. But I’m just another of those architects with his head way up his ass (but if I keep pushing it up further, it may pop out the other end).
I love it… I love this whole blog. I think it’s great, and as a white person, I think it definitely contains bits of truth. I love the picture of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain… how perfect. And if anyone is planning a trip abroad, I would visit Bilbao just for the Guggenheim… it’s worth it.
Again, it is ironic that you put a picture of one of the most controversial buildings dealing with the question of what is and what isn’t architecture. Many architects don’t regard Gehry’s Guggenheim in Bilbao as architecture. As for me I love the experience of the Guggenheim, especially the interior as well as the surrounding city. However if you want to visit a similar piece of architecture, a building that is just as incredible on the inside as the outside, visit Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A. and then go down a block or so and cross the street and see Raphael Moneo’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels.
Hey guys! I have a crazy idea: what if we limited our pontification to only those buildings we have actually visited in person? I didn’t think so.
My “GO TO” when some pretentiouss white snob starts talkin’ architecture is Santiago Calatrava.Usually I hit on his brige designs in exotic locales.Zaha Hadid works too.
TYPO! “PRETENTIOUS”
TYPO PT. 2! “BRIDGE”
Dammit! The auto spell-check is your friend.
@22 i guess i’m a white girl
…But if I’m trying to score points with the likes of you-I’m hoping that even if I come off as some kinda’ clueless name dropping HICK-you’ll find that charming & give me effort points.;->
BTW…you forgot ARQUITECTONICA on your list. They are the VERSACE of the “built environment”.They made Miami…MIAMI…and are busy putting their stamp on Las Vegas
and Lima Peru.We are all so much more stylish for it.
I’m a landscape architect and I hate having to tell people that. Every time I say it, I get responses like “Ooooooh, that sounds so cool, interesting, awesome, etc.”. Like they really know what they’re talking about. They hear the word architecture and immediately think I have the best job in the world. Oh, and they’re always white.
Go with Lebbeus Woods, if you want to see like a cool, edgy theorist.
What, no love for Luis Barragan or Antoni Gaudi?.
Yes, I know Barragan is from Mexico, but he was still good.
one good thing about about the architecture profession is that it attracts a lot of douche bags and thus keeps them out of my bar and strapped to their t-squares in some anonymous office building…. and if they do happen to get away from their french curves for a minute to have a scotch and soda on the rocks or something, don’t ask them if they are busy, b/c they will talk FOREVER about how busy they are; i think they actually like talking about how busy they are more than they like talking about the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York design by SANAA. believe it.
I like this blog. Navel-gazing and hurtful, which are two important traits in writing.
Some posts, like “indie music” and “Toyota Prius” are commentaries that have been played out, but they’re still timely. Some posts, like “living by the water” and “difficult breakups” are brilliant illuminators of characteristics that should’ve been obvious, but have somehow gone unseen.
But this is the only post I’ve read that’s pretty far behind the trend curve. As in, dated. Badly.
White people these days (or, “White People,” the caricatures of white people presented in this blog) enjoy criticizing architecture. More specifically, they enjoy criticizing modernist architecture. White People hate Pei and Gehry and Philip Johnson and Rem Koolhaas and Louis Kahn. This enmity goes along with “gentrification” and “saying they support mass transit projects” and other things White People like now.
I hope it’s obvious that the way this person uses the term “white people” is meant to be in reference to a certain sub culture that is primarily white and inhabits the U.S. I guess this is intended to be the same group that would read the term “white” in reference to this sub group and mistakenly translate it to mean an entire race. The same sub culture that I am a member of; oh my god, my sense of self has completely come undone.
no, not really. I think that the most interesting question to ask is why it is that people who fit into this supposed group or category enjoy making fun of themselves so much for it. Or, really it’s more like blatant self-loathing. Why is it that people who identify themselves with this group hate themselves so much for it, which, if I get the irony there, only makes them a greater part of it?
I don’t have a lot of experience with cultures outside of my own and I’m curious to what extent other people of other cultures enjoy engaging in conversations of poignant self loathing for the very traits that make them who they are, for better or worse.
Obviously, what’s being discussed is more a class issue than anything else. Maybe I can take a leap here and assume that most people in most affluent sub cultures through out the world experience this same acute self-awareness and self-loathing. But, do they? I really don’t know which is why I’m asking.
as for architecture, I think you can still win points with the “whites” by saying Mies Van der Rohe since his full name was actually Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe. In academic fashion, all famous men, especially after they die, have their names shortened to just their last name unless it’s entirely generic. Unfortunately for architecture aficionados, they still get a mouth-full with Mies Van der Rohe, a lot just give up and simply use Mies, in fact, yes, use Mies, that probably will make you sound more “intelligent”.
[…] Well fuck me, this blog has got me pegged. Damn internet … […]
yeah, i’m with you post 52! this blog has me pegged pretty well. i’m a huge fan of bauhaus and always sort of wished i was an architect. are white people really this predictable?
HA! All those self-loathing white people who wish they were architects. What fun, glad I discovered this group. I am white, and worse yet a WASP who goes back to the Mayflower. I am also an architect, been in the business for 54 years. Worked under GROPIUS (ta-da) a nice old man who told me that 90% of everything was crap and he was lucky and only produced 50% crap. (FOG should think about that) Worked for several years for very successful black architect. Nice guy, really knows how to build. Taught design for 14 years. Worked the last 20 years for a Chinese (or should I say Asian, oh PC correct whites) friend, who would introduce me as the firm’s token WASP. My wife and I bought a house in a black neighborhood in the 60’s, brought up our kids there and finally moved out after 27 years because it became gentrified and full of whites who wanted to feel guilty.(Guess I was partially at fault for that -OH GUILT-) Hey white architects, loosen up, don’t slobber over designers expressing their wet dreams, just do your thing and don’t fuck up. Its a lot more fun. I will never become rich, but I sure am enjoying myself and plan to die over my AutoCAD in about 20 more years.
What makes me laugh about all the comments (on more than just this site), is that many people don’t want to feel like they have the characteristics of the white people described in these entries. Then there are a few others who get all offended if they do have any of the characteristics, as if it’s all terrible to be white.
Then there are many people who laugh and say, “yep — you nailed me! I’m like that!”
So, I’m with the last group of people. Dude – I am so into architecture. And I’m proud of it! Am I slightly embarrassed by some of the characteristics I share with this site? Maybe. But I find it too funny to see how many of us white folk act. I think you can have many of the characteristics this site picks on (and something tells me the author is more white than everyone else thinks…) and yet not be a self-righteous jerk. Some of us need a little reminder that it’s not all about us. And we shouldn’t make it that way.
Thanks for the site – I’m really enjoying it.
Son of Robert Moses,
Precisely — it’s about pretentiousness and slumming, similar to Tom Wolfe’s Radical Chic. Unfortunately, to have to explain satire sort of kills the humor.
(Do I sound highbrow enough?)
@27 – BCJ didn’t do the Gates’ house, James Cutler did (white guy in flannel from the northwest – swoon!)
@31, oh gawd, yes. I am a girl architect and every guy you meet (who isn’t an architect with his head up his ass) says they always want to be an architect but….
All – Joshua Prince-Ramus is a major douchebag – have witnessed him “going postal” in person – it was ugly. At least Rem can write.
If you really need to score, say something like “Personally, I think LA architect Frank Israel was on the verge of becoming one of a handful of significant contributors to the profession until AIDS took him in his prime.”
Then toss in “Los Angeles is such an incredible city for architects because it provides a context unencumbered by Euro-centric traditions and alive with multiculturalism.”
No one can question you. You’re an instant expert, and you get multiple sympathy points for sensitivity to gay issues too.
Enjoy your McMansions and strip malls peasants!
I agree wholeheartedly with EDS. Architecture inherently involves the prospect of screwing up enormously in a very public way, which is why I’ll probably have ulcers at some point.
And I guess I’m a white girl, I think Philip Johnson probably should be excised from any list of “cool” architects, unless you’re into kitschiness and fascism.
I’m a landscape architect and I hate having to tell people that. Every time I say it, I get responses like “Ooooooh, that sounds so cool, interesting, awesome, etc.”… They hear the word architecture and immediately think I have the best job in the world.
Well, you get to sit in an ergonomic chair in a comfortable office and design things that get built, and sometimes you get to leave your office to go outside and look at plants, and you probably get health insurance benefits too. Sounds like a better job than, for instance, hamburger flipping, data entry, insurance claims processing, prison guard, White House spokesperson, Wal-Mart greeter, call-center, 7-11 manager, bus driver, etc. etc. So lighten up and quit complaining — you do have a pretty good job.
someone way back at the beginning of this string of comments said that white people invented architecture. er, are you kidding? we pretty much all live in buildings, all classes, all over the world and for most of human history.
but i think what this post is pointing out is that there are certain types of people who assume that architects only design high-brow buildings for high-brow people and that they should therefore cultivate an interest in the profession. well, bollocks to that.
architecture is certainly a fairly utopian profession: we try to make things better, to make better buildings. though having said that, we don’t assume that better buildings will make society better, it’s just nice if they can let people live their lives well and bring them some happiness, whoever they may be.
but an interesting thread has come up in this comment list: what does the blog mean by white?
someone said that it meant educated liberal americans. it actually seems more left wing than liberal to me.
but the people that are being satirised, caricatured, lampooned and generally made fun of here are a recognisable and usually fairly irritating bunch, who are also easily found here in Australia.
If you really want to impress them just mention Philip Johnson’s or Mies van der Rohe’s Glass House. Neither one is practical to live in, and both are operated as museum’s that almost no one has ever been to. Throw in some crap about “destroying the barrier between nature and modernity” or “stripping away the illusion of materialism” and your in like Flynn.
lol
I love the architecture in Silverlake.
I think it is better to do architecture than to simply write about it or criticize it.
As a black person, I like going to architecture museums myself. And other museums as well. To keep myself culturally and mentally interested. And I even read books on architecture. A lot of races and cultures are into architecture, not just white people.
67 PN: Completely agreed.
#28: Name a Famous Black Architect
Paul Williams
Why did that take so long?
[…] people like to vacation in San Francisco because it has beautiful architecture, fantastic food, and it is near the water. They like to live in San Francisco because of its […]
Michael Graves designed my toilet brush… no joke.
So true. It’s frightening.

Proper Things to Say about It: “I think one of the greatest regrets of my life is that I was at the Paris flea market and there was this beautiful table/chair/painting/cup/sword, and I thought that I would find another one like it back home. This has got to be one of the most discriminative sites I’ve ever seen. I agree with a few previous posts how if I made a site about “Bloack People” I’d get sued.
And as a white architecture student, I disagree with a large percent of what is on this site. You are talking about a minority of people who think they know architecture. The architects themselves are great!
I will agree though that the wana-be sophisticates who talk about architecture to look mannered are very annoying
It’s not spectacular!
Paul R Williams and Archibald Quincy Jones
[…] #34 Architecture […]
The most satisfying name to mention is Santiago Calatrava. Considering that he interweaves his knowledge of art, science, and technology into his architecture, mentioning his name should not only allow one to discuss architecture, but these topics too.
One of the best posts on this site I’ve seen!!!
Hilarious!
Daniel Leibeskind creates the most hideousjew architectue I have ever seen.
I’m thinking that Spanish people are white. Everyone in Europe, including Turkey- white. Even the Greeks-mostly white.
Unless you accidently mention “Bart Prince” – he could have been seen as great; if only he had a more european sounding first name and gained notoriety in a non-flyover region of the country.
we don’t draw buildings anymore, the computer does that for us…
… but we’re able to be much cleaner at the end of the day now that it’s all but automated. So no more dirtbag comments!
-it wasn’t dirt anyway, it was graphite! (you idiot)
Yeah Ryan- wow! You read pretty far through the list to tell us how offended you were, how much time we’re wasteing, (finally) name drop “IM Pei”… you don’t live in Boulder, do you? And ‘I Guess I’m a White Girl’ — don’t even know where to start- Don’t you know it’s culture that makes Milk go bad! I thought about it… it’s still bad architecture.
I have an original ‘michael graves’ designed laundry bag from Target. it works pretty well I guess- kinda stinky right now. They had sold out of the Martha Stewart one…. is she a famous, truly cultured architect also?
Is your shift key broken? I noticed you don’t capitalize properly… don’t they teach anything in that grad school of yours?
Pastor Pubert Magoo on February 17, 2008 at 11:56 am
i agree, drop rem koolhaas’s name and then daniel liebikind, just to be sure the white people around you know that you are cultured.
—> I guess you fail in the “cultured” department, because it is LIEBESKIND (properly spelling and pronouncing German nouns is also something white people love. Like Porsch-E, not to be confused with something resembling “porsh”). And if you really want to impress someone, drop the name Peter Zumthor – Swiss visionary for those of you not in the know. Then talk about the inherent value of allowing materials to express their “hard core of beauty” and acknowledge the genus loci.
Frank Gehry building, like most modern buildings look like big globs or make you think you have been swindled. How about creating something beautiful like white people in the past centuries..
East beauty test: if it has to be explained it is not beautiful.
it’s obvious someone that isn’t white wrote this because the grammatical errors can only be made by someone as uneducated as, well black. a professor is not a profession, it is a position of teaching at a high institute, such as a university. a writer is not a profession, writing is a profession, politician is not a profession, politics is.
to think white people are that naive shows stupidity, when it’s only americans that can be regarded with such ignorance. this is another example of a black trying to sound smart and failing. try sticking with things you’re good at like, stealing and smoking crack.
Bohlin did Gate’s house — it was too big for Cutler’s office by themselves. (I worked as a consultant on the project);
good architecture needs good heart; some have it, some don’t.
hey white girl, you’re missing the point.
(i) you missed corb
(ii) this is about stuffwhitepeoplelike, so if it gets up it’s own a’rse it’s lost
(iii) and if it gets up it’s own r’ace it’s lost too
the numbered points establish my white cred. n’est ce pas?
that’s not true at all. he’s not my bag, but together with all other architects, i regard gehry’s work as architecture, but some disparage it for having differing values and priorities to their own ‘brand’. anything that has really been thought about is architecture. otherwise it’s just building, and no-one would say that of gehry.
but getting back to the point, shouldn’t you also mention certain restaurants, (eg sketch), accessories (porsche?), watches (georg jensen) and cars (alfa romeo?).
yep. rofl.
you nailed me.
When discussing this site in the back of a cab with two white friends last night, I told them they should go to Montreal for a weekend this summer because not only does it have multiple restaurants dedicated to the serving of breakfast, but the architecture of the city is beautiful.
I pooped my pants
wow! a site for albinos? how clever.
Interesting response. Your last comment reminded me of all that I heard from every professor I had. You have a great list, but it surprises me that you’re missing some of the truly groundbreaking. I might add…
Jose Luis Sert
Walter Gropius
Theo van Doesburg
Edwin Lutyens
Louis Sullivan
Alvar Alto
The Saarinens
and of course…
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris
P.S. Where are the women?
Julia Mogan
Zaha Hadid
Maya Lin
Betcha some of these guys love Legos.
Hey, you do NOT just throw them into the air to land on your polished burl oak desk and then call on your technicians to come and figure out how to make something habitable out of your creative moment.
Sobering thought…
I never get invited to the get-togethers that honour the current star’s newest multi-million (fill in the currency)creation.
Maybe they know I am not a member of the pure white intellectual cream.
Maybe they know I would be sneaking into his office to play with his stash of Legos.
Time ago, in the deep of the night a friend of mine called me to ask me where Gehry was supposed to come from. He was at a party, facing aggressive chitchat competitors and in his opinion I was his only reliable source (poor guy).
Those folks were pressing him stating that O’ Gehry was an Irish. So I had to reassure him that the O. (Not O’) stands for Owen but he couldn’t have been an Irish anyway, since his name at birth was Ephraim Goldberg.
Oh sorry… GoldENberg. It is 2.00 AM, just switched to 3.00, here (due to DST). Is there Johann Sebastian Bach among the many topics of stuffwhitepeoplelike ?
GENIUS LOCI, not GENUS LOCI ! Properly spelling latin words is another thing white people like. Properly pronouncing them is a concern I happily leave to the (german) Pope and to the director of “The Passion”.
Commom misconception…being an architect has nothing to do with math…after people find out you are an architect they then say…”wow, you must be really good at math”…then I snort and laugh — why does everyone think this!!!
So, have I got this right?
You are a white student (of architecture) and architects are “great”.
Ok…I got it…you study to be “great”.
Keep on sucking up JavaGuy.
Man I should have read this before I had Liebeskind do mine.
The crystal scratched my toilet bowl and stuff sticks to it now.
My apologies to Daniel…
(misspelled your name on top of it all)
The wife tells me she thought Michael Lee-Chin would do a better job of it…That explains everything.
Libeskind doesn’t do s*&t.
youre the first to mention zaha, she is made of ugly but is awesome
notice the “youre” and no capitalisation of zaha
I am too white and privileged to give a fuck
ZAHA HADID
ALI RAHIM
zaha isn’t black. try david adjaye.
I have to disagree. The most successful architect ever was Mike Brady. I’m not sure if he designed the Brady’s 1960’s spilt level California rancher, but he was a genius none-the-less.
[…] Architecture (in art terms) […]
As a white student of architecture I approve of this site.
If white people keeps babbling on about architecture just hit their ass with some Glenn Murcutt or Zaha Hadid. Both have been awarded with Pritzker Prize and still no one knows of them. As we all know, prizes are of great importance to white people.
Ali Rahim isn’t black
HAHA… arquitectonica?! i’m working with them on a project right now in Miami and am NOT impressed! we were given all of their shit to fix because the client hated it… versace my ass
[…] Clander, “If you ask white people what they love about cities they don’t live in, they will say […]
I agree that if you ‘drop’ a name like about any Architect that is somewhat trendy you pretty much are going to get some uptight whitey to wet their pleated slacks.
I heard this once in a bookstore selling those fancy Architecture books full of pictures and light on text, “I’m going to have my friend Rick Sundberg of Olson Sundberg design a new bookcase for me. But he has been down with the flu the last few weeks, so it will be a little while before he can show me some prints.”
I could see his beady little eyes scanning the room to see whose head turned the fastest!
This pretencious snot had doubled up the anty. He not only knew a famous living white architect, he was having him design something for him and knew that he was sick! I think he blew his own wad he was so pleased with himself. you go boy.
I’m white and what I prefer about cities is the plethora of strip clubs.
Don’t forget George Castanza.
The Rem Koolhaas was so funny. I am an African American architect, so I understand the satire of these lists. Who puts these lists together anyway (creator)?
Here are some more if you don’t know any
Richard Meier
Robert Stern – for beginners
Steven Holl
Zaha Hadid
Frank Cehry’s buildings piss off engineers and contractors alike. Even his own design team doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. He can crumble up a piece of paper (MIT) or scribble the same drawing as a 3-yr old (Walk Disney Concert Hall) and people will eat it up even though they are a)Inefficient, b)Butt-ugly and c)Impossible to defend on an engineering level. Look at the Stata Center at MIT and tell me that you don’t think that the architect was blitzed out of his mind when he came up with that design. People need to stop poll-jocking him.
Looks like the white people are trying to outdo each other (architect name dropping) on this comments thread.
Yes, you’re funny too! Lighten up
Why, then, did you take the time to ponder the information and write several paragraphs on your opinion of the sites “pointlessness?” Open your mind
Art VanDelay….an architect, and importer/exporter.
As a former “architect” I could not help but underscore your comment. For several years in two of the most celebrated firms in America, I endured the smell of pouilly-fuisse laced wine breaths mixed with fecal matter from some of the most arrogant and pompous archiholics one can imagine. Their heads were in their asses because they were looking for themselves beyond the profession. Get a life.
I also met some of the most community conscious, forward thinking, and compassionate artists I have ever known. They are the backbone of most firms and are hardly as credited or noted as their celebrated counterparts.
Does the kind of Stuff White People Like include things like
Truth, Equality, and Justice?
http://www.survival-international.org
I’m from Podgorica, Montenegro!
There are no opera houses in Podgorica.
I suppose I. M. Pei is really a white man trapped in an Asian’s body.
hi,
there’s a textbook on african american architects- please look it up. the former dean of my school is black, now the bond part of davis-brody-bond- they’ve had a bunch of work. in ny, they made a number of residential towers with larger footprints towards the top. bond is one the few black architects that have had buildings built in harlem. he has two.
most of the architects mentioned are “great”, but in the trendy sense of the profession. and philip johnson was a fascist, rem koolhas is all about trend, corbu championed killing the street, and many more major mistakes have been made by these so-called visionaries.
my favorite architects (not mentioned yet) deal with people:
hasan fathy tried his best to make attainable housing for the poor in egypt.
sam mockbee started the rural studio in alabama to get students to design and build housing and community spaces for the poor.
jersy devil makes natural looking (organic, sustainable)* buildings.
sim van der ryn advocated for ecologically friendly design decades ago. he was swiss and taught at berkley for years in the sixties.
these and all the others are “architects”. when it comes to building, someone already said it and is right on, people have been building forever and for their specific region! that means people did live without air conditioning, and lived well in really cold places (without absolute oil dependence).
as for monumentality and great design outside of the european modern age: the f’ing pyramids!, africa and americas, the ornate temples all over asia. we think we are the best because of our technology.
unfortunately, students and architects miss the point of site specificity. i wish they would focus on where the building is and how to make it work well instead of solely what it looks like.
* organic and sustainable are definitely the buzz words in the profession now a days. people will awe at your eco-intelligence.
a few responses:
• capitalization sucks, yes i am a grad student.
• as i understand it, the authors of the website are white. to be pc, if you are white, it’s ok to criticize whites, and the same would go for other peoples. self-criticism flies, even though all criticism should.
• criticism from one “race” to another doesn’t fly. not because it has no merit, but because of the mean-spirited, fact-less, generalized way it’s done in, which makes it fall into the racism category.
• gehry’s mit buildings leak bad and mit is suing him because they are dangerous come snow time (i think it’s because the jutting windows collect a bunch of snow and it then falls and blocks the emergency exits).
Not true. I’m white, gave up the car more than a year ago, and take the bus everywhere in LA. I use the public transit more than I preach about it. Then, I went to the backwater of Albuquerque and used their transit system! Yikes:) There are those whites who refuse to be categorized – which could be another post…
Robert Venturi!
Eero Saarinen!
Michael Graves!
Louis Kahn!
OMG I am going to have an orgasm.
Yes. Yes it is.
Definitely not spectacular.
(EXCEPT for the Bilbao Guggenheim.)
Julie Snow is good, too.
No way, you are still elite, alablaster! 😉 If you were an architectural history student, your professors would eat that shit up. Something outside of modernism for a change… “how refreshing,” they’d say.
You’d have to use special words like “vernacular” and “localized” in order to get points, however.
Interesting….the “canon” of architecture cannot be as easily exploded as it is for art. This is so because architecture costs a lot of money. It has to be classy, or classist, if you will.
Architecture still has moral “weight” and it reflects more easily society’s biases and preferences. White people love architecture because it poses no threat to their invisible privilege… it perpetuates the canon that they know and love.
Aw man, I love Louis Kahn. But I’m white. Who am I? I don’t know who I am anymore…
Actually, in Gehry’s own words, the “O” is a zero, and it stands for “nothing.”
Norman Foster is rather nice!!!
I love Shigeru Ban. His work amazes me and I never miss a chance to talk about his work. In reference to the use of recycled materials, unfortunately most people I have encountered love recycled materials but only if they look like something else. I mean come on, why should our love of the environment ruin the beauty of our buildings.
As a student who has taken architecture for 4 years, white people usually bluff about their architectural knowlege. They just combine a few pop words like ” post-modern deconstructivism” and hope that no one will realize they were talking about an architect who died in 1850. Basically, its a great way to look cultured while just bulshiting.
Don’t forget, for example:
Yesterday (the old-school deconstructivists):
Raimond Abraham
Peter Eisenman
Anthony Vidler
(I had all three as professors and critics)
Today:
Renzo Piano
Shigeru Ban
Tomorrow:
Lot-ek
Herzog & de Meuron
Lindy Roy
..The list is endless.
I’m also an architect, caribbean american, and a woman. …So, on one hand, I don’t totally agree with the direction of this particular blog. ..But (to the author), nice try.
Um, so you’re obviously forgetting THOMAS FRIGGIN JEFFERSON!
win.
If his name is LIEBESKIND, how come his official website spells it Libeskind?
And anyway, even if it had been spelled wrong, bad spelling is not really a criterion for being ‘cultured’ or not. Shouting at people when you haven’t checked your facts, on the other hand, is open to all kinds of criticism, for instance that it’s extremely tiresome and puts in doubt any other comment you might make, however valid, which is most certainly not the case with the PS “it’s not ‘bad’ architecture if it still has you thinking about it!”. Does this mean, for instance, that Hitler wasn’t a bad chap because people still think about him, or that if you still think about the car crash that killed your dearest friend maybe it wasn’t such a bad crash after all?
Think before you write, then think again before exposing your lack of sloppy research and logical thought to the whole world via the internet.
hehehe. you tell ’em…
those scratches are actually lines connecting the personal histories of jews who died in the holocaust with various points around the bowl of your toilet. i’m sorry to tell you this, but it’s inevitable that another libeskind jewish museum is being built in your toilet even as i type this… you will probably need to move out.
No, we hate Truth, Equality and justice. All of us. We really hate those things.
Yep. I like buildings.
IM Pei and Wright are both Architects with a capital ‘A’ while real architects, people who design a true humane built environment are people like Cameron Sinclair, Bill McDonough, and Bob Berkebile. Designing like capital ‘A’ Architects is a lot like driving a flashy car. You probably have something you’re trying to compensate for.
PS Wright designed the clothing that you were required to wear inside of Falling Water, talk about a control freak.
They’re all a bunch of fish in parte. Frank Gehry is a hack that people love becasue it makes them feel like they’re better than other people because thay can site the Guggenheim Bilbao. He’s just another capital ‘A’ Architect that will wash out like any other fad. True design is beautiful, simple, and eternal. I refer you to Bucky Fuller.
When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.
-Fuller
ARCHITECTURE
Love it, love it, looooooooove it!
Here’s some architectural prose.
Testing:
Hydrostatic tests: Do not install insulation until the piping has been tested. Pressure test cold and hot water services to AS/NZS 3500.1 Section 16. Include pipe joints, valve seats, tap washers and strainers. Repair as necessary, replace if damaged and retest.
swoooon…….
Thanks, Michael. I’m so tired of beaux arts and post modern piles. They’re just buildings, for chrissake.
This is why people love me at dinner parties. I am an architecture journalist and do this shit for a living although I sneer at the idea of people using the word “bauhaus” in conversation. It’s much more fun to talk about it without using that word and then when people get a blank look say “oh, that’s bahaus”.
Also anyone who mentions Gehry should be shot, he says the architectural press HATE him and he is right, useless one trick pony that he is reusing the crumpled drinks can over and over. Cool architects right now would include James Law Cybertecture, MAD (a Chinese firm), Heerim and A-cero. Acceptable starchitects would be Vinoly and Piano.
Mentioning Gehry will immediately invalidate your architectural nous because Brad Pitt likes him, and also Jean Nouvel who Pitt and Jolie named a kid after. Don’t cheapen your intellectual endeavours with the aspirations of Hollywood wannabes.
With remote places I find that mentioning North Korea and their communist monumentalism wins every time. You can then make it dangerous by talking about the DMZ or sleazy by talking about the brothel in your hotel basement that was run perfectly openly and delivering prostitutes as room service!
Architecture + art + adventurous travel for the win with stupid snobby people (they don’t have to be white).
As an architect, I wish I could say that white people, or for that matter anyone was educated enough about architectural history. For all this pretentiousness, the United States is a suburban nation led by the nose of lowes, home depot, and hgtv.
Although in Vancouver (second whitest place in North America) the vegetarians-Lefties-feminists-friends-of-minorities-tree-huggers, etc would prefer to have quaint craftsman style houses as opposed to the iconic architecture of Bilbao or Beijing or London because iconic architecture means globalism… and no decent vegetarians-Lefties-feminists-friends-of-minorities-tree-hugging Vancouverite would like to have her (I use the feminine here because all White guys here are sensitive new age guys in touch with their feminine side) city have any association with a globalist image.
To score points with White people (especially MFA students/grads who dabble in issues regarding the built environment and blames city hall for everything) who like architecture but who are not architects or urban planners, it is also important to mention names like:
Deleuze > For rhizomic readings/experiences of the city. Nicely ties in with Walter Benjamin’s figure of the flaneur and Michel de Certeau’s “place”.
Foucault > Mention how in the Netherlands urban planners and architects are beginning to employ Foucault’s notion agonism in design charrettes.
Nigel Thrift > English geographer who recently published a book call “Non-Representational Theory”. Speak about the possibilities of how non-representation in the line of post-structuralist thought can hinder minority empowerment. Mention you’re feeling a bit ambivalent about Thrift’s position.
Giorgio Agamben > For the notion of coming community. But any decent “I-love-minorities” White person (esepcially ones taking first year social science classes) will believe community and identity is innate for they have Native, Asian and Black activist friends who tell them identity is essential.
NOTE: BE SURE NEVER TO HINT YOU SUPPORT GLOBALISM.
No White people in North America have heard of Kenneth Yeang who has done much more in terms in sustainable and ecologically-aware architecture… Not even in Vancouver where it is now an official crime to be non-sustainable.
White people don’t like to capitalise their words because they don’t want anything to do with textual hierarchy.
They want to emulate bell hooks… the black feminist author
Ryan is a grad student in the humanities… that’s why he is angry… remember White people like to get offended….
I have had the luxury of seeing the filtered light through several museums designed by Piano, as well felt the weight and structure of a Foster. I can name drop with the best of them as well mention influences beyond Focoult or Deleuze, I can even name a few landscape architects – my preference would be Brazilian Roberto Burle Marx. But hey I can because I am an architect and everything I do echoes a pretentious personality from the coffee I drink (arabica beans are for cubbo) to the wines I prefer freehold South African from the vineyards of Boland Kelder. But having read this thread and the responses I realise that the colour of my skin aparently has little to do with it.
but here’s a diy for those that want to pretend to be knowledgeable in architectural circles.
1. wear black clothes (irony aside)
2. if you are really an architect, you can talk passionately about it…or not. Be more renaissance in your apprehension
3. square framed rimmed glasses preferably designed by an architect always wins
4. refer to dead architects by the last names, living by their first. It also helps to add “a” prior as if there could be no other. For instance, a Johnson, Wright, a Neimeyer, Corbu, a Mies…or for the new bunch a Frank, a Rem, Oscar, etc etc
5. use words not usually found in day to day idiom – search you’ll find them a couple have been spouted in this post alone
6. drink things devoid of colour (martinis in a stemless glass) or excessive provocative samplings like a mint juily mojito
7. quote from not just architectural bibles like SMLXL but also from lesser known ones by up and coming architects who’ve made a name without building a thing.
and if all else fails and you’ve captured the prey try, to keep their interests speak about the distasteful projection of Corbusian modernism in Western media or some other babble that speaks about architectural history and its elitist perception
have fun kids…
James, you’re just like Ellsworth M. Toohey
Ayn would not like James one bit. Nor do I. Altruism is not a virtue.
[…] #34 Architecture […]
Oh man. I work in an architecture library on a university campus, and this is so painfully true.
True to you, but aren’t you awfully close to the subject to be objective?
You do good, boy.
I’m a Prineville Reservoir American. Yippie skippy.
Yea, like compensating for not having the money buy one while I was young.
When I was 25, a 450SL was $25, 000. A trendy house, in an old Dallas neighborhood, was about the same money. By the time I could throw money around, the SL550 was 100,000., drive out. That same trendy house is about 400 grand.
I wish I had bought the 450SL back then. I would have had more fun.
If you want to be roundly hated by white people, buy a Ferrari. In the white people lexicon, Ferrari is a synonym for envy. If you park at a breakfast cafe on a Saturday morning, and leave the car for 20 minutes, you will return to find that the car has been keyed at least once. A real car person would not key a car belonging to Adolph Hitler.
Right on sister!
I can just imagine James at one of his swanky parties admiring some new building saying, “it truly has an exquisite façade that beautifully honours those seen in late 17th century Baroque cathedral architecture.”
funny thing about being an architect and being at a party where people try to pull this over…
I smile smugly into my bourbon and change the subject to football.
hey architechtopihiliac… ‘square framed/rimmed glasses’ – surely you’re joking; what are you…. a… a…. a neophyte?!
Any nouveau brutalist worth his grits in Gropius knows that only round Corbu-style spex will do…
I can name Paul Williams as an black architect. Only a few of black architects make a name for themselves that I have research.
nice grammar and sentence structure
I think someone would say “ecclesiastical Baroque architecture” just to be a pedant 😉
Actual architecture dos seem to be more a case of doing business, networking, and gossiping about how famous architect X is sexually harassing the interns at the firm or how famous architect Y is so depressed despite having vast amounts of money. The worst recent one at the opening of a new building in London had the uber-famous starchitect talking about his new chateau and how he was thinking of having a larger private jet. :S
It’s always at the parties which have nothing to do with architecture where people who know very little talk about it that I do tend to pipe up. I suppose the reason is that it takes seven years to train to be an architect, the same as a doctor, and everyone seems to have a misinformed opinion. They wouldn’t presume to talk about medicine the same way, so why architecture? Dropping a few names and mentioning a museum you liked in Bilbao simply presents an illusion that is easily picked away. It would be like mentioning Flemming and talking about medicine to a doctor and my opinion on anti-biotics because I once read an article in the Spectator.
Talking about North Korea is always fun though. I’ve been… and I bet you’ve never met anyone else who has 🙂
architechnophilia – I assume you mean Michel Foucault and Les Mots et les choses?
I’ve been to Podgorica in Montenegro. Anyone who has actually been to Podgorica would never brag about being there.
If the person you are trying to impress has been to Podgorica, the stunned silence would not be one of awe, but one of pity.
I could have been an architect, Jerry!
that’s actually a fantastic talk about the building’s design process. jake – you just sound somewhat under-accomplished. screwing the architect has nothing to do with it.
well, if you had gone to an ivy league architecture school, this may not have happened. sorry that you are state-schooled.
#19 Travelling
https://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/01/23/19-travelling/
Who the hell builds that shit anyway?…Awesome work!
Ya gotta mention Joseph Eichler, Palmer & Kriesel, Gregory Ain, Cliff May and Richard Neutra.
And all WP love Craftsman bungalows.
Can I quote this in my architecture students blog?
🙂
seriously, feeling smart without reading/doing too much is great past-time of mine.
I knew an architect once. Died in his sleep when his ultra modern house slid down into a ravine in Portland’s West Hills. If it only didn’t rain in Portland, or if only architects didn’t build houses where only trees or meant to grow. So much for achitects.
no one died in that slide! plus, it’s the developer who thinks it’s a good idea to build on a hill, in a rainy state, and destroying the trees which hold the earth together. they are the designers, and poor judges of creation.
yeah, i’m an architect.
the thing about architects, is they think they know a lot, sadly enough all architects are selfish of having their own creation stand out… being an architect, in a real-estate developer in Dubai, just makes you hate it all, with the famous architects messing things around, because they have the money, and not the watch. The designs I had to refuse, and I am still a junior!
shame.
so true, i heart Craftsman bungalows and all of my friends (all early 30’s WPs) live/want to live in one.
I am what my name says I am, what is a Craftsman Bungalow?
One interesting thing I have noticed about this site are the mixed signals. In some posts non-whites are instructed to be careful of ever out shining a “white.” Yet, in others, like the one above, they are instructed in ways of one upping the “whites.”
so ultramodern? please please please do your research next time before you describe contemporary architecture as “ultramodern” and then proceed to post a Gehry building as visual reference. Next time do some research in deconstruction and post-modernism before you make yourself out to be an ignorant whiner. Thanks.
Lindy Roy is an idiot!
Finally, someone who recognizes how difficult it is to be an architect and how everyone seems to think they know a lot about it. I am currently a junior studying architecture and I still have 3 more years of school followed by 3 years of internship. I have never heard of any architect having a private jet. Also architects are among the least depressed professionals and thats while getting almost no sleep. The pay is good but only as good as you. If noone likes your designs then paying rent is your top priority over a private jet.
Wow, I guess I’m half way to being a true “white person.” My favorite passtime is to drive around the Bos-Wash Corridor and snap photos of buildings or just admire them in their often decrepit states. But I guess I haven’t really done the adequate research to actually name any of the architectural styles of which I’m taking pictures, but give me credit for being half way to white-dom. I was just in Philly the other day giving my friend the “drive by” tour of center city and Chinatown. I was in my glory and so was he.
What’s your story, dude? This whole blog is like an attack on knowledge. If someone is interested in a subject and dares to (GASP!) take the initiative to educate themselves, you attack their acquisition of the knowledge as somehow encumbering, wasteful, and of little value instead of attacking the pathetic triteness of pluralism and modern popular culture. You aren’t nearly as intelligent as you’d have your readers believe. No wonder they gave you a book deal…
does it also come into the equation that brad pitt is a large force in spreading well-built, economical, modern architecture in the recovering new orleans area… or that he is friends with thom mayne (forgive him for gehry)
That architecture shit is for pussies!
Gimmie a dung hut any day!
It has nothing to do with intelligence, but humor. Truth be told, a lot of black (not all) think this way about white people and that is why it is so funny, especially because a white person is writing it.
you are soo white!
Aside from the fact that all of this is so CLEARLY written in jest, it’s not an “attack on knowledge” or anyone who pursues something as a legitimate interest – but rather those who aspire to be better than others BECAUSE of their interests regardless of how genuine they are.
And they will gather to discuss their “interests” in a one-upmanship contest that they call “a gathering of friends”
Also I would like to second the opinion that, you are indeed so white. A genuine belief in your whiteness ranks even higher than ironic whiteness.
A dung hut is architecture, you’ll find it referenced in many architecture history books. Suck it.
Zaha has the face only a mother ( a blind one at that ) could love.
Her buildings represent her own beauty…and are poorly constructed… ie the pathetic excuse for a “fire station” in austria…since abandoned
jrocco, your whiteness is blinding me!
…HA!
You wouldn’t know Architecture from construction.
AHAHAHAHAHA!!!
That building is freakin ugly!
Lol, but architecture is awesome 😀
#101 Being Offended
LOL
Whoa, easy big guy – this is supposed to be funny/light hearted. I suppose there are some things to get irritated about on this site, but architecture? I guess it hit a little to close to home with your over-educated upper middle class white liberal elitist urban hipster roots?
The prius blog is a little heated to. Go over there and vent on about how you can save the planet with an overpriced subcompact!
My dad is black. He used to be a ararchitect and he has all kinds of big books about it. He loves that stuff. I do too!
Wait, suck the dung or the history books? Because the books will be dry and tasteless, but the dung might once have been pizza!
God I hate that Frank Gehry shit so much!
I was a welder and an Ironworker for 15 years and all I can think about is what a fucking pain in the ass it must have been to put that ugly ass crap together. and it’s so obviously prone to roof leaks and structural weakness.
He did some buildings at MIT in Boston and I know the maintenance guys there and they said the place was falling apart after 3 years. Masonry and windows cracking because of basic design flaws. Same with IM Pei, his subway stations are dirt and grime collecting beams, leaking roofs, drafty and unpleasant.
But it looks good until they collect their checks , so who cares , right?
Guess the irony was lost on you, huh genius?
You say that like it’s supposed to be an insult. So what is wrong with being white? I guess you think that he’ll try to defend himself, and starts telling you about his 1/16 native American blood.
Unfortunately, I live about a 6 minute freeway drive from Gehry’s monstrocity of a creation, the Disney concert hall, which is around the corner from the Cathedral of Los Angeles, another hideous abomination
This city dweller is a people watcher, noise listener and antagonizer!!!
~ White Girl – Janice Marie Foote ~
Art Vandalay was a great architect. He was also white.
Jrocco is obviously not white if they don’t understand/like the irony of this entire blog!
Thank you for putting that into words, accompanied by a professional opinion. I had always assumed there had to be something else wrong with buildings that looked that goofy.
Sigh.
Thank you! This is the best response to stupid pretenious “architectural” crap. My husband is a carpenter and that’s generally his take on “innovation” too.
-tripod
actually the Guggenheim at Bilbao (the building above) was Gehry’s first major structure not to leak. Before that museum was completed in 1997, Gehry was well know in LA for his building’s leaking, but Frank LLoyd Wright was also known for his buildings leaking. Every single one of Write’s buildings leaked. And no, there are now structural problems with the museum. That is the whole point of Deconstructivism is to create a structurally sound building that appears to be falling apart, or at least that is very simplified definition of the style. And I am pretty sure MIT is just suing Gehry for mold problems and the law suit has nothing to with the structural foundation of the building. And how can you honestly hate Frank Gehry and IM Pei? As far a modern architecture, they are pretty much polar opposites.
I don’t know if you actually have some affiliation with architecture, or if your just some damn hipster trying to bash architects and styles just to look cool. I couldn’t care less weather or not you like Gehry and IM Pei, but if you insist on doing so, at least make an attempt to act like you know what your talking about.
Its puzzling that this site is produced by white people who find amusement in targeting other white people as privileged, yet ignorant, petty, and self-centered. I wonder, do these characterizations somehow exonerate the producers from their own role in our matter-of-factly racist global society? Perhaps another thing that “white people like” might be bashing other white people.
Kinda funny how somebody seems to be speaking for “black” people, as to how they “think”. Did the token black guy confirm this?
two years ago, i went on a trip to NYC with my then boyfriend and how about I fell in love with him even more when I discovered that he loved architecture as much as I do – and we’re both black. he was the first guy i’ve dated that shared that interest with me.
oh, thanks for the tip on the gift clander!
Dear Wade
I think you would be better off learning how to spell before you tackle the tricky stuff like architecture.
Oh yeah i caught that AFTER I posted it. I hate when that happens. I’m going to school for architecture so that’s why I know all that information.
Guess he doesn’t think this a laughing matter.
ha.
This is PREPOSTEROUS!!!!
http://www.beabetterproducer.com
I agree with what your saying.. i want to be an architect but my mind spins when i think of all the insane structures going up at dubai.. i think what it’s like to design them, the math figures, and then the people who have to build it. My boyfriend is a welder and tells me who cares.. you know they are getting paid well. All i have to say is they better be, you need some serious modivation to get some of those buildings materialised.
I WANT A MILLION DOLLARS!!! Can one million RICH WHITE PEOPLE send me one dollar apiece, puh-lease????
I don’t want money from any Asians, or Blacks or Hispanics. You guys NEED your money. I only want one dollar apiece from RICH WHITE PEOPLE who seem to WASTE their money involving architecture.
Waste it on me instead. Thanks so much! (First person who comments “You ARE a waste.” is a rotten egg. You thought it. I know you did. Stop lying. See? I knew it.)

^definitely white
dont hate on modern architecture!
hhahaah, your so right
Or the Cathedral de Notre Dame in St. Omer, France. I went in it on my two family trips to my Dad’s hometown and the multi-phase construction of the building is over 1,500 years old! It survived armed invaders, WWI or II air bombings and the French revolution when anti-clergy demonstrators smashed the angelic statues. I seen the site when a pagan ritual ground was indicates the building was on holy ground the Gauls and Moroni (a West Germanic tribe) performed ceremonies about 2,000 years ago. Cathedrals are one of the best architecture in France, home of the Le tour Eiffel, L’Arc du Triumphe and the Musee de Louvre all in Paris.+
I’m from a place like California where wealthy white folk have spanish tiled roofs, feng shui modeled living rooms and street names are in Italian. But out in the deserts, they talk about buying a condo on a “cool” beach or regentrified townhouse in downtown L.A. because the S.F. valley is going “ghetto” (to see Blacks move in) and the O.C. is too expansive (not Santa Ana). The idea of architecture in Sou. Cal. is multi-cultural to combine borrowed (or stolen) themes from foreign countries while rejecting the blendness of post-WWII/mid-century suburbs (except Palm Springs). +
I’ll beat them by stating I have a 2/3rd? Cherokee (western band) grandfather from the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma, a 12-year old in a dust bowl stricken family are sharecroppers came to the San Joaquin valley in the 1930’s and moved to where large numbers of Asians, blacks and Hispanics are in the south bay L.A. area after fighting in the US marines in WWII and the Korean war. If you state being Cherokee or Native American in Sou. Cal. you fit well in the “colored” side, much like boosting they are Chicanos, Nisei and/or Armenians in that “I’m not immigrant” sense +
Should I brag about Montenegro is the newest country in the world at this time? Oh well, the former Yugoslavia was a failed multi-ethnic state, the kind of ideal white people in America don’t understand…and Montenegro isn’t Serbia, despite Sou. Cal. has a large Montenegrin community, though are mistaken as Serbs or Croats. +
Try to bring up Adolf Hitler’s dream of a super capital city Germania to replace Berlin, the dream city never came to be and located 10 kms from the infamous Auschwitz in Poland. Hitler wanted the best architectural designers/artists in the world and the completion date was 20 years from approval. +
My other user name after Michael was repeatedly taken by those in past comments, to prevent any confusion to come out. Why can you design a custom-home the way you want it…buy a lot cheap, give the realtors and construction crew your blueprints and “get ‘er done”. +
I regret your country has the name of a racially charged word “negro” to be a pun of jokes by comedians in America, but I knew your country’s name in Latin is “black mountain”. What’s next “Sierra Niger?” I combined two names of west African nations, another is Nigeria from the name of a river not the racial group or skin color. +
Ah, the French heart and soul of former New France and the little Europe of North America. Montreal is a train wreck of an economic market, once the largest city in Canada until the 1970’s brought upon by some elements of Quebec separatism. Unemployment rate is nearing 20% there and the History channel documentary “Gangland” found the city is a hotbed of motorcycle gangs involved in drug trafficking. +
have you ever had to sit at a meeting with a group of white male architects? OMG. i’ve never seen a group of people who take themselves more seriously. fyi: architects talk about how they can get you to go outside more and stop watching tv so you’ll read. they view themselves as “innovators” and will use you to “experiment” with their “ideas” b/c they are “architects” blah blah blah. they waste time and money because they can be so NOT practical. the young ones especially who haven’t been humbled yet. i’m not saying they are bad people. just very ridiculous when it comes to their “work”.
LOL I saw this site on http://www.DanielDickey.com and I must admit it’s just as funny!!
oh, I forgot to tell you that I’m autistic and I am an asshole too.
If you are going to attempt to sound smart, learn to write dumbass. Nothing is more pathetic than a autistic retard trying to sound intelligent. You give all autistic people a BAD NAME. Take a jump off Le tour Eiffel, that may knock some smarts into ya.
Wee wee muthaf@#ka
How about Palm Springs mid-century architecture to make 1950’s era weird-shaped homes look classy and appealing to the affluent buyer? The triangular “aeronautic” styled roofs or interiors once was the (winter vacation) home of Hollywood celebs, US presidents or corporate businessmen are known to hold some value. Then again, it’s a scheme to retrieve the former glamour or glory of the desert resort. +
I have found something which combines an insane number of stuff that white people like into one package, it is a not for profit organization called Architecture for Humanity. From a brief look through the list it contains the following (I may have missed a few):
– #12 Non-Profit Organizations
– #19 Traveling
– #18 Awareness
– #34 Architecture
– #62 Knowing What’s Best for Poor People
-#120 Taking a Year Off
Oh and of course their worldwide headquarters is located in San Francisco. Outstanding!
Best way to tell apart people who “like” architecture and people who understand it, and to win the architecture conversation: call Frank Gehry a sculptor.
i hope enough time has passed for this joke: white people should build innovative buildings that can take a few airplane hits without falling……
too soon?? sorry, i had too, couldnt help myself.
Civil Engineering is where it’s at. You get to go work in Dubai, THE white person middle east city.
A true standard in comedy blogging.
Another great site is http://www.SomethingYouShouldRead.com
Use the word “juxtaposition” contextually in a sentence and you’re in.
[…] CLander o arhitekturi: The reason white people love architecture so much is that deep down they believe that they could have been a great architect. They feel the same way about other professions including: professor, writer, and politician. Also of note, white people love big books about architecture. So if you need to get one a gift, this always goes over well because it makes them feel smart without having to read too much. […]
Funny you should bring this up as I am an architect. See that new wing at the Guggenheim? That’s me. It really didn’t take much time either.
. A wise man once wrote, “Where there is little to lose by trying, And a great

If you could blow $25, or spend $25 or even Invest just $25, and within 180
days get a return of several thousands of dollars by simply following a
proven format, would you do it? Of course you would!
Well, here’s your chance. As was aired on TV,you’ve probably heard about
the 15-year old boy hiding away over $70,000 in cash in his closet. He
followed the instructions below, and earned lots of cash.
Or about the wife, who as a joke, set out to prove to her husband that she
too could make money on the Internet, and after well over $100,000 her
husband, now a believer, decided to join her.
If you could use a break in life, an opportunity, to get ahead to make your
dreams become a reality, read on. This is your opportunity.

that the returns are many. I have been extremely successful using the
following company. They send out the offers, and all I do is accept money
for reports, then I send back to the people as soon as possible.
This is what one had to say: “Thanks to this profitable opportunity. I was
approached many times before but each time I passed on it. I am so glad I
finally joined just to see what one could expect in return for the minimal
effort and money required. To my astonishment, I received a total of
$610,470.00 in 21 weeks

**** Take this entire letter, with the modified list of names, and save it
on your computer. DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER
CHANGES. Save this on a disk as well just in case if you loose any data. To
assist you with marketing your business on the internet, the 5 reports you
purchase will provide you with invaluable marketing information which
includes how to send bulk e-mails legally, where to find thousands of free
classified ads and much more. There are 2 Primary methods to get this
venture going:
METHOD #1: BY SENDING BULK E-MAIL LEGALLY
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Let’s say that you decide to start small, just to see how it goes, and we
will assume You and those involved send out only 5,000e-mails each. Let’s
also assume that the mailing receive only a 0.2% response (the response
could be much better but lets just say it is only 0.2%. Also many people
will send out hundreds of thousands e-mails instead of only 5,000 each).
Continuing with this example, you send out only 5,000 e-mails.
With a 0.2% response, that is only 10 orders for report # 1. Those 10 people
responded by sending out 5,000 e-mail each for a total of 50,000. Out of
those 50,000 e-mails only 0.2% responded with orders. That equals 100 people
responded and ordered Report # 2.
Those 100 people mail out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 500,000 e-mails.
The 0.2% response to that is 1000 orders for Report #3.
Those 1000 people send out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 5 million
e-mails sent out. The 0.2% response to that is 10,000 orders for Report #4.
Those 10,000 people send out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 50,000,000
(50 million) e-mails. The 0.2% response to that is 100,000 orders for Report
#5. THAT’S 100,000 ORDERS TIMES $5 EACH=$500,000.00 (half million). Your
total income in this example is: 1….. $50 +2….. $500 + 3… ..$5,000 +
4….. $50,000 + 5….. $500,000……..Grand Total=$555,550.00
NUMBERS DO NOT LIE. GET A PENCIL & PAPER AND FIGURE OUT THE WORST POSSIBLE
RESPONSES AND NO MATTER HOW YOU CALCULATE IT, YOU WILL STILL MAKE A LOT OF
MONEY!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
REMEMBER FRIEND, THIS IS ASSUMING ONLY 10 PEOPLE ORDERING OUT OF 5,000 YOU
MAILED TO. Dare to think for a moment what would happen if everyone or half
or even one 4th of those people mailed 100,000e-mails each or more? There
are over 150 million people on the Internet worldwide and counting. Believe
me, many people will do just that, and more!
METHOD #2: BY PLACING FREE ADS ON THE INTERNET
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Advertising on the net is very very inexpensive and there are hundreds of
FREE places to advertise. Placing a lot of free ads on the Internet will
easily get a larger response.
We strongly suggest you start with Method #1 and add METHOD #2 as you go
along. For every $5 you receive, all you must do is e-mail them the Report
they ordered. That’s it. Always provide same day service on all orders. This
will guarantee that the e-mail they send out with your name and address on
it, will be prompt because they can not advertise until they receive the
report.
AVAILABLE REPORTS
ORDER EACH REPORT BY ITS NUMBER & NAME ONLY. Notes: Always send $5 cash
(U.S. CURRENCY) for each Report. Checks NOT accepted. Make sure the cash is
concealed by wrapping it in at least 2 sheets of paper or aluminum foil. On
one of those sheets of paper, Write the NUMBER & the NAME of the Report you
are ordering, YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS and your name and postal address.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$ YOUR SUCCESS GUIDELINES $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Follow these guidelines to guarantee your success:

continue sending e-mails until you do. After you have received 10 orders, 2
to 3 weeks after that you should receive 100 orders or more for REPORT #2.
If you did not, continue advertising or sending e-mails until you do.
Once you have received 100 or more orders for Report #2,YOU CAN RELAX,

Testimonials:
You will make over half million dollars every four to five months from your
home!! Before you say “Bull”, please read the following: this is the letter
you have been hearing about on the news lately. Due to the popularity of
this letter on the Internet, a national weekly news program recently devoted
an entire show in the investigation of his program, to see if people really
can make money with this program. The show also investigated whether or not
the program was legal. Their findings proved once and for all there are
absolutely NO laws prohibiting the participation in this program, and if
people can follow simple instructions, they are bound to make some mega
bucks with only $25 out of pocket cost.
“My name is Mitchell. My wife, Jody and I live in Chicago. I am an
accountant with a major U.S. Corporation and I make pretty good money. When
I received this program I grumbled to Jody about receiving “junk mail”. I
made fun of the whole thing, spouting my knowledge of the population and
percentages involved. I “knew” it wouldn’t work. Jody totally ignored my
supposed intelligence and few days later she jumped in with both feet. I
made merciless fun of her, and was ready to lay the old “I told you so” on
her when the thing didn’t work. Well, the laugh was on me! Within 3 weeks
she had received 50 responses. Within the next 45 days she had received
total $ 147,200.00….all cash! I was shocked. I have joined Jody in her
“hobby”.

“Not being the gambling type, it took me several weeks to make up my mind to
participate in this plan. But conservative that I am, I decided that the
initial investment was so little that there was just no way that I wouldn’t
get enough orders to at least get my money back”. “I was surprised when I
found my medium size post office box crammed with orders. I made $319,210.00
in the first 12 weeks. The nice thing about this deal is that it does not
matter where people live. There simply isn’t a better investment with a
faster return and so big”.
Dan Sondstrom, Alberta, Canada

“I had received this program before. I deleted it, but later I wondered if I
should have given it a try. Of course, I had no idea who to contact to get
another copy, so I had to wait until I was e-mailed again by someone
else……11 months passed then it luckily came again…… I did not
delete this one! I made more than $490,000 on my first try and all the money
came within 22 weeks”.

I like architecture because of the elegaic emotions that they elicit. Federalist, Cotswold, Gothic, and classical are some of my favorites. I find post war architecture to be lacking in any character and devoid of any talent and creativity. Some modern buildings are sleek and airy, but, are the exception rather than the rule.

Been there. Hate filled and ignorant.
Knowing Celebritects like Gehry, Mies van der Rohe and Libeskind only proves that you’re probably white.
Proving your ultimate whiteness would involve blathering away about the brilliance of Uno Prii, Viljo Revel, Raymond Moriyama, Arthur Erickson or Eb Zeidler. This would also prove that you are an uber-white nerd from Toronto.
Bonus white-nerd points if you know where their offices are!
Bauhaus around the world! 😀
See, I’m an exception to this one. I like architecture, but I’ve been explicitly told, by architects, that I would make a horrible architect, and that I should probably stop trying. Hurray for me, eh?

HAHA! Yes, white people do love architecture! One of the most sought after vacation homes that white people love the most are a-frame houses! They are unique, they are modern, they are rustic! White people LOVE to talk about their homes. Well, at least i’m half white…that might explain the blog i have dedicated to my a-frame house. lol

Only commenting because I graduated two days ago with a degree in architecture. My favorite thing about “being an architect” is that I can tell white people that I’m an architect and they instantly seem impressed. Also, least favorite thing is that I tell white people I’m an architect and they, for some reason, instantly thing that’s amazing, they love architecture, have I heard of Frank Lloyd Wright?
And being a Catholic from New Orleans makes me basically not white, though, from what I’ve been told. Though I do get instant cred points towards jazz, culture, food, and alcohol, I feel like I lose a few for not having some inherent sense of apology for the Crusades or for the Inquisition. Am I the wrong kind of white person? 😛
i am a landscape architect student, and unlike alot of the majority i see it as it is and really cringe at when fellow students and teachers smother themselves in this aura of pretentious. What i find most funny is when i design something to look Awesome void of any meaning only to be critiqued by teachers who apparently see unknown attributes and the like,
