#35 The Daily Show/Colbert Report

The Daily Show/Colbert makes up a duo that is held in such high regard by white people that to criticize it would be the equivalent of setting the pope on fire in Italy in 1822. It just isn’t done, in fact it isn’t even considered!

White people love to make fun of politics, especially right wing politics. It’s a pretty easy target and makes for some decent humor, but white people are actually starting to believe that these two shows are becoming legitimate news sources.

“Oh, I don’t watch the news,” they will say. “I watch the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. You know, studies show that viewers of those shows are more educated than people who watch Fox News or CNN.”

White women all consider John Stewart to be the most perfect man on the planet. This is not a debate, it is law.

The Daily Show also features guests like John McCain, writers, policy analysts, and actors. It is comforting for white people to see boring celebrities get interviewed in a funny fashion. It fills their need to do something productive, but also not work that hard at it.

Take note that Tuesday through Friday during the working week, you can break ALL awkward silences with white people by saying “did you see the Daily Show/Colbert Report last night?” At which point they will start talking until it’s time for you to move on to more interesting activities.

The Daily Show itself has a fairly diverse group of fans, whose most important common trait is being well-educated. While it’s surely true that being well educated and being white have gone together historically, this is changing, and I don’t think it’s a good link to reinforce.

The Daily Show also has a very white cast. This is initially surprising given that actual news shows tend to have a fair amount of nonwhite onscreen talent (black guys and asian women are especially popular) and that comedy is one industry with fairly high black representation. Yet this comedy version of a news show is all white people.

The reason is that the Daily Show is a certain type of humor–whitepeople humor–and, their own liberalism be damned, they don’t want nonwhites bringing in different kinds of humor and screwing things up.

Along those lines, I would bet the staff of the Onion is all white.

Yes, this is absolutely true. I’ve watched The Daily Show and The Colbert Report religiously with my Mom throughout high school. I’m in college now and I watch both of them online. I don’t know if I love them for reasons stated on this site or not, but I know that if I brought this page to her, she would get pissed (she’s a bit touchy about this sort of thing).

O ya, the Daily Show and Onion are very white in both essence and staff. That being said, this particular one (ie. #35) — and the fact that it’s well known that many whites, including but not limited to angry geezers and violent hill-billy white-trash, enjoy neither Daily Show/Onion-style content nor humor — reveals the main (but not crucial) problem with this whole list: It doesn’t target white people as well as it targets liberal bourgeoisie yuppies, a group that is mostly, but not entirely, white.

On another note: While it is true that it’s futile to get defensive about this list, as the list is indeed very accurate, it’s also true that howardroark’s repeatedly used “Love the defensive posts!” comment is a hackneyed and passive-aggressive form of criticism that itself is very white.

I love TDS and I’m pretty white (Still haven’t remodeled anything yet, but my daughter is almost old enough to remember it, so we’ll have to get on that soon… our kitchen needs a new counter, and some better lighting, maybe a pot rack… sorry, where was I?)

Oh yeah, TDS. It’s not political commentary, it’s press criticism. Politicians are rarely criticized directly, and the people who are in for the harshest treatment are generally right wing hack book authors.

Albion Beige, my criticism of howardroark isn’t the least bit snide. Its tone is earnest and matter-of-fact, as is that of this post. I interpreted his message to mean that there’s something ineffective/laughable about others’ attempts to deny their whiteness (according to this blog’s definition of it); the implication being that they’re embarrassingly stuck with undesirable whiteness. The problem is that his message did so in a way that really only serves to make him seem more like his targets. Your criticism wrongly assumes that I think whiteness is undesirable.

While I do frequently enjoy The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, the thing I do not like about those shows is their promotion of the idea that politics is just so gosh darn funny. While politics can make a person laugh, its not really supposed to be reduced to a snarky giggle-fest. I mean, since January of 1991 to the present day, counting all the Iraqis who’ve died in our two wars with Iraq, and our twelve years of daily air strikes & devastatingly inhumane sanctions between those two wars, we’ve killed approximately two million Iraqis (or about 7% of their total population). Hitler is generally regarded to be the worst person ever, due primarily to his having killed six million Jews. So does that mean that the U.S. is at least one third as bad as Nazi Germany, for all those Iraqis (including Arabs, Khurds, Turks, Assyrians, and assorted others) we’ve chosen to liquidate? Seriously. I’m not sure that makes for a very good joke.

Viewers of these shows are more educated than CNN/Fox News viewers? Ha. Fox did a poll of Jon Stewart’s viewers and most of them were uneducated losers. Think about it. Who stays up until midnight watching some immature political humor show? Educated people with good jobs are in bed long before midnight. Only losers are watching tv that late.

The only problem with the Daily Show is the schtick that Stewart is compelled to do to help fill out the half hour. The real meat of the show only takes about ten minutes. Its during the other twenty that you have time to pause and think, is there something better than this out there? Is this one of the reasons I was born, to sit and watch this stuff, no matter how funny and satisfying it may be for a few moments?

Yeah, this is so true. No wonendered, I messed up the other day so bad tryin to strike a conversation with this White dude at a Halloween Party last year.

He was dressed up as Mr. Colbert, and me being a naive non-mainstream Hispanic, wanted to strike a conversation with anyone at the party since I didn’t know anyone. So anyway, I was just chillin by myself at the snack table and I saw this dude dressed up as Mr. Colbert, whom I didn’t know at the time, and so I asked him, “Who are you dressed up as?” Dude said after looking at me all stunned and said: “Of course, like Colbert!” and then he walked away..:(

God Darn it! you see what happens when you’re not part of the mainstream… you get mistaken by people ’cause they think you tryin to make fun of them or something.

But listen to this, now I know who Mr. Colbert and his show!

I love Jon Stewart, but Stephen Colbert is the truly perfect man. And while I am white and a former high school teacher in Compton CA, I am a recipient of universal care for people of a certain age (Medicare), so I don’t fit the young demographic. Does it help that Young is my maiden name?

I agree with 95% of the posts on this blog so far, but I don’t think TDS or TCB are exclusively white. It is fair to say that white (liberal) people love them, but I’ve been in the audience for the Colbert Report twice, and it’s usually a pretty good mix.

Seriously though, I’m not going to argue that political comedy shows are ‘real news’ but they are very daring and willing to criticize the Bush Administration. Right after Iraq was invaded, no big news station wanted to have anti-war people on or question what was happening. They have refreshing view points, and are often the first ones to say things that eventually big stations agree with.

Honestly, whatever you think about CNN, it’s a bit ridiculous to call Fox News real news. Bill O’Reilly is blatantly biased, and there’s no comedic slant between him and his adoration of George W. Bush and friends.

Anyway, I think a lot of your insights about white culture are hilarious and spot on, but these shows are pure brilliance and really do have some intelligent insights that anyone who isn’t a conservative would love, regardless of race.

Plenty of educated people stay up late – including myself. I have a bachelor’s degree, have a career and am taking MBA courses – staying up late is part of the territory.

I think both shows take swipes at conservatives and liberals alike. I get sick watching most “real” news shows, and some comic relief at the end of the night is welcome. I don’t know how anyone can say these shows are liberal and make fun of conservatives…has anyone listened to their comments on Hilary?

While I appreciate your point about politics not being funny, the very appeal of the show is the hush you sometimes feel when Stewart has pointed out some horrible truth that the media didn’t pick up on. You can sometimes feel his frustration and anger coming through. Sometimes that’s the joke. And sometimes it isn’t funny. And when that happens, it stirs something in you…some revolutionary instinct that your ipod and your Padagonia wardrobe has not been able to exptinguish.

If only it were true that all white people loved the Daily Show. I am one of the smug white people this site describes (yes, I listen to Of Montreal and wear vintage T-shirts) but there’s no snobbery about it. Please, join us! I’d like to mention the HUGE crowd of white people that were visiting the National Portrait Gallery the other day ONLY to see the Colbert Portrait.

The portrait of old favorite George Washington looked pathetic compared to Colbert’s inkjet printed portrait, which had a Mona Lisa sized crowd around it.

It’s like, if it takes Colbert to get you into the world’s best portrait collection, so be it.

If you want to be super cool to white people, just mention how you went to see this portrait, or how you WISH SO BAD that you could have seen it. And how you’re probably going to take a trip to DC soon to apply for some non-profit jobs.

It’s satire, christ. Stop taking this so seriously. This blog is satire as well. A very large majority of TV-based comedy revolves around that exact form of humour these days. It is, in truth, one of the few sources of humour that does play to the intelligencia. People just choose this over other ‘comedy’ programmes because it takes that element of the real with the unreal and makes it more enjoyable than watching The O’Reilly Hour or whatever the hell it is.

People are more inclined to enjoy humour around their intelligence level…that doesn’t make viewers of The Daily Show/Colbert Report more intelligent it just means that that is the programming which generally reflects their interests/level of education.

If you think that these two shows pander to the uninformed, you obviously haven’t ever watched King of Queens…or Everybody Loves Raymond. I’m sure your idea of informed comedy is Frasier. There’s another thing white people like (excluding myself).

I liked Jon Stewart in BIG DADDY. He actually brought an honest, humane performance to the role. Seriously, he was excellent. He did another film with the woman from X-FILES, where he was solid. He really should act more. He’s pretty talented.

With that said, I always thought Stewart sandbagged Tucker Carlson on Cross-Fire that time. Carlson, who is without a doubt, quite a tool, was sucker-punched. He wasn’t expecting Stewart to verbally attack as he did. It was kind of a dick move. Carlson wasn’t expecting it – check out the Youtube clip of the interview – you can see on Stewart’s face as he’s announced that’s he going for the jugular. He went on there looking for a fight.

The Daily Show (much like Bill Maher) they want it both ways. They want to attack the establishment press and the beltway, but when those people fire back, they claim, “Oh, we’re just a comedy show!” You really can’t have it both ways and hold the moral highground….at least in my estimation…….

On the subject of Comedy Central shows, The Chapelle Show really needs an entry on this blog. White People (of the right kind) love it because they think it puts them in tune with contemporary black culture. Other white people (of an even wronger variety than me) love it because a black guy sometimes says the dread n-word. Also, it went off the air before it jumped the shark, and hence kept its “cred” (much like the phenomena mentioned in the Arrested Developement bit)

What I’ve never been able to figure out was whether it really was in tune with contemporary black culture, or if the white kids who thought it was were just as deluded as Chris Finnegan in that “Mad Real World” sketch. Any insight?

Actually, i hate these shows, if there is nothing else on i go find something else to entertain me. personally i dont tend people who sterotype, some of these are funny, but who says we all have to be all of these things? i dont like pot, i don’t like not having a tv, i hate marathons, i find having two last names to be a hassle, i could care less if my friends are black or not, hating my parents only results in bad things for me, i strongly dislike breakfast foods, my computer (an hp) came with a bunch of indie music and i ended up deleting it all, i think that expensive sandwiches – along with eating out – a waste of money, divorce ruined a good portion of my life, difficult breakups are annoying, i hate soccer with a passion, i loved highschool, also being the only white around is usually awkward. He’s pretty much to Bush what Rush Limbaugh was to Clinton during the 1990s in that with every administration, there are people who make a career out of mocking them. When Bush came into office, Rush mostly disappeared because no one wants to listen to him agree with the President. Hence, Colbert and Stewart found their respective niches. We Americans like to watch people make fun of our Presidents. Come 2009, when Obama or Clinton is occupying the White House, Stewart will become a relic if he doesn’t reformat. Sadly, I must admit that I fit this stereotype lol. Although I am much more a fan of Stephen Colbert than Jon Stuart. Not to say Stuart’s show isn’t funny, I think it is, but Colbert is just so much more out there. And it’s satire! Love Colbert though. Actually bought his book right before he made an appearance at my school for the Distinguished Speaker Series. He’s even better in person. I am a white liberal living in Brooklyn who has ALWAYS said that “The Daily Show” is overrated. Whenever I watch it (which is only occasionally) I usually find the observations dead-on, but I rarely find myself actually laughing. Next time you watch it, listen closely. You’ll find that Tina Fey was right: There is more applause coming from the audience than laughter. “The Daily Show” was better, and certainly more subversive, when Craig Kilborn was the host. At least he could make his way through the mock reports without faking suppressed laughter the way Jon Stewart does.

I LOVE the Colbert Report. Stephen sure knows how to use satire. I got this cool Colbert Report DVD with hours of footage. Colbert has mastered the art of a fake right-wing propagandist talk show host that I think most of his viewers forget that he’s imitating guys like “Papa Bear” Bill O’Reilly and is his own character.

Daily Show is ok, but now that I found the Colbert Report, it pales in comparison.

The other funny thing is according to your judgement of white people, no matter what a white person does, it makes him white. As in, if you’re white, no matter what you do, in your eyes, nothing can escape what you see as a white cliché. An all-encompassing stereotype of sorts, the stereotype you can’t escape from, the unfalsifiable cliché. Anything you can do and its opposite is white, as long as your skin is white.

I’m Jewish, and am honestly confused whether or not some of the comments here are/were intended to be offensive. PS Colbert breaks down into three roughly equal parts:
-hilarious ripping on Republicans
-apolitical humour that is either bathroom or random, and usually not funny
-ripping on Republicans which is not funny, and starts to sound more like left-wing people patting themselves on the back for how enlightened they are.
The last third prevents me from watching the show. I like to rip on Republicans and Democrats more or less equally (although I’ve had more contact with the far left than the far right via university campuses, so I admit bashing Democrats is a bit funnier) and hence I watch South Park. South Park >>> Colbert, in both funniness and intelligence.
PPS Once in a while (so I’ve heard) Colbert will take some REALLY far left wing nut to task for being nuts. For actually doing this, I give Colbert a lot of credit. Overall I like the guy even though I’m not crazy about his show.

Limbaugh is a comedian who poses as a serious political pundit — making outrageous exaggerated statements that he broadcasts as if he’s really serious.

People! These are COMEDY shows; the blog is satire (a form of COMEDY). If you don`t know what this word means, look it up!

If these forms of comedy don`t make you laugh, don`t watch or participate.

No wonder that most of the funniest comedians in (North) America are from Canada. At least we take comedy at face value & don`t waste a lot of energy trying to politicize or racialize the content. We just enjoy; laugh if we find it funny, change the channel or website or whatever if we don`t.

Obviously I am a proud Canadian. Race & ethnicity are irrelevent (although I`m sure some of you will jump to some ridiculous conclusions) since I am an individual. I find both these shows funny, even hilarious at times. I also find what I`ve read so far of this blog to be funny & entertaining.

I think Colbert is dead-on as a satarist, and funny. Honestly though, even as a female, lol, Jon Stewart doesnt do it for me anymore. He seems to be turning into a cranky, jewish old man. And who the hell is that Black guy he has on his show? He looks and sounds like a poor man’s Penn from Penn&Teller, cept’ he’s a liberal. Never really found him particularly funny either. Jon Stewart surrounds himself with very funny people though and his show has been a great springboard for others. Props to him for that I guess. I am a loyal Daily show/ Colbert Report watcher, have been for years.
